Just got the S4. For my purposes, it's a good fit. My old phone was an ancient Samsung that I had had for over 2 years (and it had been out over a year when I got it). I don't need a waterproof phone, a heart rate monitor or a fingerprint scanner. The S5 just wasn't worth paying an extra $150. My S4 is great.
It might be due the Samsung Galaxy S5 having come out in April of this year. On the other hand, the HTC one and the LG g2 use the 800 processor. It appears that the battery life on the 800 is decent. 10 to 13 hours I think. I'm currently using the S5.
***** poor battery life on kitkat, I just bought i9506 yesterday and I´l give it back because of shitty battery life. Also I had this phone maybe half year ago with 4.3 android and battery life was so much better...
***** battery life is better on 801 chip sets which is available on most of the phones released this year. Android lollipop and iOS 8 have and are adding more battery saving features over time.
Pocketnow Your welcome, I find myself watching your videos even when I don't care about the tech that you are reviewing. That should speak volumes to how good you are. Keep up the good work bro.
Out of all the videos I've seen lately regarding the gs5. This one is by far the best one. It's precise and clear. You guys focused on the things a real consumer looks when changing phones.
S5's design is nothing but downgrade. When new companies are striving to give the customers thinner profile and slimmer bezels, Samsung spits on that idea. What gives? Running out of gimmicks?
My last phone was the S2, I currently have the S5. If anyone with an S4 asked, I'd advise them to wait for the S7 or later. I loved the S2 at the time, and I love my S5. My biggest complaint with the S2 was that the plastic camera lens cover scratched too easily rendering the camera basically useless. There was no built-in protection, or was nothing on the market that could protect it. It was also not easily replaceable. What has changed on the S5 is that the lens appears to be glass which has proven more scratch resistant. It is not protected any better though, and is arguable more difficult to replace now that there is the IP67 certification to be maintained. A marginal improvement I'd say. With the S2, the chromed plastic ring around the phone was fragile and that hasn't changed, while it hasn't cracked yet like it did on my S2, the pain has still chipped off, thankfully though it is white plastic underneath so it doesn't stand out as much as the black plastic on the S5 did. I just don't understand why they couldn't use metal for the ring like with the Alpha. Many people complain about the construction material but as bendgate has proven, metal isn't the be all end all. Also the puckered soft touch plastic on the S5 has proven resistant to scratches and scuffs. One thing that is rarely mentioned is that the backwards compatible micro USB 3.0 port not only charges the phone in about 1.5 hours, and transfers data more quickly, but it's also sturdier. I remember my old micro USB cable used to eventually be rendered useless if the phone was disturbed too much when it was charging and there appeared to be a loose connection. Not with this one so far though, it's pretty snug and secure in there. Yes they are coming out with the reversible 3.1 next year, but that doesn't matter to me really, I'm happy with 3.0. The protective flap is not as much of a drag as some might have you think, and I appreciate not getting pocket lint in there. Related to the charging ability of USB 3.0, the battery life on this phone is spectacular. I consistently get between 12 and 20 hours of usage out of the phone, and I have all the goodies turned on, including "OK Google" from anywhere, all radios, air gestures, you name it. Back in the day on my S2, I used to get 6 - 8 hours of light usage, but if I watched a few videos, and/or used GPS for any length of time. battery life dropped as low as 4 hours, and the phone would heat up when using GPS. They seem to have worked out all those bugs in this version and there's a huge improvement. The finger print reader was not a selling point for me, but I have actually been using it, and I find it's more accurate than I thought it would be. It's a bit buggy in moist situations, but there is always the choice of entering your password. I just like the fact that there is no code for anyone to look over my shoulder at when I'm unlocking my phone. Anyway, I'm not going to get into any of the more obvious screen like amazing screen, camera etc. I just wanted to mention those things that have not improved, and some of the hidden gems that people rarely talk about.
Hey folks! Our full review is now live at Pocketnow and linked in the description, and the video review is available here: Samsung Galaxy S5 review: good, but not Glam Enjoy! ^M
According to your voice I thought you like about 50 years old, but than I saw your face & I am like WHAT!? I even forgot what was video about for like 10 seconds being in kinda shock?! Your voice sounds older than your look, maybe it's only me... sorry. Nice comparison :)
pocketnow stepped up the quality of their videos by ALOT, I enjoy watching their videos now, I feel like I'll get the information I need. Awesome videos pocketnow team!
Your review videos are great.... Question for you.... between the S4 and the S5 when it comes to data downloading via streaming or a wifi hotspot, is there a difference in speed?
I like how good s4 feels in the hand with its thin profile. s4 is better looking device, slimmer, lighter and more pocketable. s5 is better in camera and durability though.
Thanks so much you answered all of my questions that I had about the samsung galaxy s4 and s5. I was wondering weather or not I should get the older model or the newer one. I decided that I am going to be getting the newer one for myself. looking into both of these phones for about a month. Thanks again for all the wonderful information you provided in this video.
Was just trying to decide which one to get my little brother for his birthday and I am definitely going to save some money with the S4! Thanks for making this video
i just got my s5 and yes i know its old now, but i dont need the latest phones. I used to only use apple phones. Im glad i made the switch honestly. I love this phone so far, only complaint? the volume rocker can be irratating. and the battery cover is annoying trying to fuss with it at night but other than that, it is a nice phone and i only paid 200 dollars for it brand new in package for at@t.
200$?!?! Jeeez... I bought mine for 288€ new, actually, it's on its way to me. I'll get it for my birthday, so actually, my parents bought it, not me huehue. Well, better ruin your suprise than getting a phone chosen by your parents xD
What about temperature and humidity sensor? I had one S4 now have one S5 it says on the box it has those sensors, but I can't reach them, do you know anything about it?
The best call quality I get is not on a smartphone is on my old Nokia 6310i and Nokia 7110 . This two have the best call quality that no other smartphone will ever have . Thanks for the video Michael you do very cool videos :)
Well, compared with S4,I think the menu key on S5 has been changed to show the background tasks instead of long press home key,and the new touchwiz, those are what we want.
That's one of the most annoying things about these phones for me. Now the iphone has also begun following that trend (iphone 6). Very disappointing. I want a phone that I can completely operate with one hand, without having to shift or use another hand. Really don't like the size factor on these phones. I have one of those old Nokia phones, and it's really small. That's what made me like the iphone 4/5. It was really small as well.
For heartbeat get runtastic heart pro For s5 software get from xda developers in the s4 i9505 section samy deluxe s4 rom or phoenix 8.0 and things are being upgraded
I recently bought an S4 (upgrading from a dumbphone - Samsung SGH-J700) as I figured the extra features in the S5 weren't worth paying an extra £200 for. However, I was rather amused the other day by a notification from Samsung offering me £250 in vouchers if I traded in my S4 for an Alpha. After reading the specs of the Alpha, I thought "Why the heck would I want to downgrade my phone?!"
S5 gets not as good of a signal as the S4. I've expirinced it and you can see it in the video at 2:51. It may have a higher rating in the numbers but when the S4 has one bar and the S5 has none, at least I can still use the phone.
I Had an GS5 until I drowned it. hated EVERY part of it. * Camera takes ages for the shutter, unless you turn off all the extras. * Video formats now unsupported * Light/flash is dim as hell * Blocking mode doesn't work properly - still get notifications with sound and led & screen still illuminate * No lock screen quick launches * No Lock screen extra page(s) * Switch it on and it keeps reminding you about the back cover * Charge it up and it keeps reminding you about the stupid usb cover * Stupid usb cover is fiddly especially in the dark and with it on wont fit a dock properly - Also heard reports of it breaking off (google it) * Fingerprint scanner is crap locked me out BIG time * Colour is too rich even when set to lowest setting (used a professional photo screen calibration tool and confirms it) * 2gb of RAM (WOW) 80% or more of that is pre used so effectively you get less than 500mb * Records is 4k (GREAT :) ) but only plays back in 1080p W.T.H? * Not too water proof after all (youtube it) * IR blaster is a pain in the arse gave up with it. * Too many background apps running * Too many forced app downloads - download em and they crap out other apps on the phone * In app drawer when creating folders they can't be added to a page with other apps, App drawer folders have their own page. * No FM Radio * Taking panoramic shots there is no separate shutter click (sound) when you get to another section and found to be a pain. * Switch from camera to video and it auto starts recording video. * Volume keys no activate shutter making you zoom by fingers on the screen (found a couple of people who dropped and cracked the screen as holding 1 handed while trying to zoom) * Screen still cracks when you fart on it.
Both phones are great phones. I'm a Samsung fan. I think Samsung makes the best phones on the market. I especially love the Super AMOLED screens. I have a Galaxy Note 3, and it is awesome! The only problem I have with the Samsung smartphone cameras is the lighting in the low light photos. The ISO is up to 800. At least Samsung can boost the ISO to 1600, or maybe even 3200
Everyone keeps touting the 128GB micro SD card support as an advantage over their predecessors. However, this isn't true at all, as test have shown that essentially any phone that supports the 64GB micro sd card will support the new 128GB card, including the Note 2 and Galaxy S3. XC spec supports up to 2TB, so if formatted correctly (most likely FAT32) all of these phones may continue to support higher capacities in the near future.
Great video, by the way. I've always followed PocketNow and Michael Fisher. In my humble opinion, he's is one of the best tech reviewers in the business.
Older generation devices are easier to recommend these days because of marginal differences but its less likely that an OEM will push updates for those older devices which is still quite important.
How i wish there was a brand who just come back to the basics. The best Hardware Specs, the bigger battery you can put, the lighter OS with they can put (with less things running on the background as never before) and the smaller the phone they can make.
Aaron Yang But it is a waste of money to buy features that will never use. A phone as i descrive would be much cheaper than a Galaxy. I would prefere to use a Nexus as a base to do the software modifications i mention (i done with all my phones to last at least 4 days in heavy use).
TheMadOptiSailor TheLinkbro I despise cyanogen mod ;) Stock kitkat without a single skin or feature add and only moded to allow to take off google services on background is fine (i know cyanogenmod do it but they change too much for my taste)
Your right, cant say the same about plastic phones... Just drop the htc one one time and its ruined, then you drop the galaxy s5, probably the back will get off, but the phone is protected. Thats the reason why plastic phone are better, they are also not that heavy and have got the better grip.
Is the S5 about the same size as the Samsung Galaxy J7??? I'm trying to get away from the enormous size of the J7 I have now but it seems like the S5 might be about the same size as my J7 :-(
Video will hit HD when processing is complete. Enjoy! ^M
No
Kristupas Rezgaitis very true; the camera simply takes several shots and combines them in software.
Wallpaper please.
Forgot to mention S4 I19506!
The Galaxy S4 has only the snapdragon 600.
Too true. I forgot about that. The ordinary S4 has only the 600 though.
It might be due the Samsung Galaxy S5 having come out in April of this year. On the other hand, the HTC one and the LG g2 use the 800 processor. It appears that the battery life on the 800 is decent. 10 to 13 hours I think. I'm currently using the S5.

Finally a non bias review!!
I agree. He does a damn good job. Unlike Jamie. And yes I meant to spell it that way. Dude seems like hes an apple fan boy.
Brennon Simmons Oh he totally is.
This guy is a beast at reviewing tech. I really enjoy your videos.
Agree 100% best going around atm
Thanks for the support! ^M
Pocketnow Your welcome, I find myself watching your videos even when I don't care about the tech that you are reviewing. That should speak volumes to how good you are. Keep up the good work bro.
Same too. Hate other reviewers whenever they nitpick on Samsung's Galaxy S's bloated features & cheap plastic construction.
2019? We have the Samsung Galaxy S10 and Michael Fisher is now known as Mr. Mobile on RUclips.
the s4 looks better and the size of it is perfect. However the s5 is obviously better overall
not obviously.. its barely an improvement in specs and the menu system is horrendous
still an improvement
Paris Malaspinas the s3 was an ''improvement'' .. s5 is more so of an upgrade aka a S4s if you follow apple nomenclature
This is why I love the Pocketnow reviews. Good reviews across all platforms.
I miss the old days of PocketNow
Out of all the videos I've seen lately regarding the gs5. This one is by far the best one. It's precise and clear. You guys focused on the things a real consumer looks when changing phones.

S5's design is nothing but downgrade. When new companies are striving to give the customers thinner profile and slimmer bezels, Samsung spits on that idea. What gives? Running out of gimmicks?
Its because of the water resistantce like Sony phones have a bezel that you could park a Mac truck on
(GS5) IP67, Matte, perforated, back cover > Hyper-glaze glossy back (GS4). :)
AYDELL2123 As if the customers would care? Sony makes thin waterproof phones for ages already, moron...

Samsung galaxy s6 sucks
How could you possibly know that? It's not even out yet.
TdotSoul
thousands of review videos has already been made, you don't need to get the actual phone to know if it's good or not.
Like I said it's not even out, so how could the reviews be worth anything. No one has spent any amount of time with the phone.
TdotSoul
It's not out to the public, but some people can get it through different ways earlier. You should go check out the reviews.
"Fucking Samsung's usual trend" 0:59 You've hurt me deeply.. ;_; I cri everytim
He says bucking
insainllama I know right! Just thought it was funny :D
1:00 all I keep hearing is, "Fucking Samsung's usual trend, the Galaxy S5...."
7:21 INTENSE WORKOUT LOL
Be careful not to get too exhausted Michael :D
Really good review, thanks a lot and congratulations for your excellent work.
Great review. I have the Note 3. I won't upgrade to the S5 because it's not much of an upgrade aside from the IP67 rating.
Hey folks! Our full review is now live at Pocketnow and linked in the description, and the video review is available here: Samsung Galaxy S5 review: good, but not Glam

why haven't you've done a review for the verizon variant of the SG5?

According to your voice I thought you like about 50 years old, but than I saw your face & I am like WHAT!?

Such a nice video! Please share that wallpaper.
Awesome video!!!! Specially cause it was shot in Boston!!!!!
Another awesome video Michael :)
Can't wait for the review :D
Thanks, great comparison. Is the camera wider angle than the S4s, or do you still have to take two steps back before shooting a picture?
Looks to be about the same, unfortunately. You still need plenty of room. ^M
I've said it before and i'll say it again. Michael Fisher is the best thing on the internet.
pocketnow stepped up the quality of their videos by ALOT, I enjoy watching their videos now, I feel like I'll get the information I need. Awesome videos pocketnow team!
best reviews on RUclips.
Your review videos are great....
Question for you.... between the S4 and the S5 when it comes to data downloading via streaming or a wifi hotspot, is there a difference in speed?
Great review and very fairly presented, thanks !
Thanks for watching! ^M

Does the galaxy s4 have download booster , like on the galaxy s5 ?
Nope
I like how good s4 feels in the hand with its thin profile. s4 is better looking device, slimmer, lighter and more pocketable. s5 is better in camera and durability though.
one question. Your slowmotion seems a higher resolution then i can make it. i have 720p. What do you guys have?
Z1 vs Z2 when ever you get the chance ;D
Thanks so much you answered all of my questions that I had about the samsung galaxy s4 and s5. I was wondering weather or not I should get the older model or the newer one. I decided that I am going to be getting the newer one for myself. looking into both of these phones for about a month. Thanks again for all the wonderful information you provided in this video.
Galaxy S4 Turkey version 2.8 ghz 8 core 2 gb ram
Was just trying to decide which one to get my little brother for his birthday and I am definitely going to save some money with the S4! Thanks for making this video
im coming from a droid razr my upgrade is soon would would the S4 be worth it to save money over the S5?
Thx a lot for the review guys! Now, all I want is just a review of S5 vs Z2. D:
i just got my s5 and yes i know its old now, but i dont need the latest phones.
It's a good phone in 2016, I just got mines yesterday.
+Maranello Santiago Your wrote this comment on my Birthday!
200$?!?! Jeeez... I bought mine for 288€ new, actually, it's on its way to me. I'll get it for my birthday, so actually, my parents bought it, not me huehue.
Well, better ruin your suprise than getting a phone chosen by your parents xD
The S7 has a microSD slot through
***** I don't think 99% of people will be taking it out over the life of the phone.
What about temperature and humidity sensor?
I had one S4 now have one S5 it says on the box it has those sensors, but I can't reach them, do you know anything about it?
I would love to see a Galaxy S5 and Note 3 comparison !!
How about the I9506 version?
How come the bezels are bigger on the S5 vs S4?
Plus, the bezels on the GS5'S are between the GS3 & GS4. Got no slouch on that.
You guys have the best phone videos. Keep it up.
Thanks, Jonathon! ^M
The best call quality I get is not on a smartphone is on my old Nokia 6310i and Nokia 7110 . This two have the best call quality that no other smartphone will ever have . Thanks for the video Michael you do very cool videos :)
I have an iPhone 4 should I get the gs4 or the gs5?
Despite my criticism of the S5, it remains the best Galaxy S device after the S2. The S4 was a hot mess IMO.
dude, the S4 was and is amazing
TheZombiePlayer not according to user experiences...I've heard too many complaints about it. That and the S3 were horrible devices!
TheZombiePlayer I guess if you got the Snapdragon version but the Exynos version was a hot mess.
i still have the phone and i haven´t had any problems with it
Yep. You're right Datafiend. All the ppl I knew with issues had the Exynos version
What about the headphone jack while swimming? Wouldnt water get in it ?
Very good video ;)
Well, compared with S4,I think the menu key on S5 has been changed to show the background tasks instead of long press home key,and the new touchwiz, those are what we want.
Thse new phone flagships are becoming closer to phablet size now.
True, if it does then phablets are considered as a smartphone instead.
What is the name of that jetfighter 3d game. I want that game. Please anser me fast.
Grrrrrrreat job pocketskow
I currently have the S4 I was going to upgrade to the S5 but I think I'll wait a few months and get the Note 4 in September
I think I will stick with my S4 for now until S6 comes around!
For me, it's my best intention of upgrading my GS3 to a GS5 this year. :)
gtone339 That's perfectly understandable coming from GS3
rounak dutta Yep. :)
rounak dutta So...did you get the s6?
MonsterHunter200 gotten it and returned it too............getting the note 5 asap
For heartbeat get runtastic heart pro

@6:04 what game is that?
who's talking about a better processer? have you seen the note's 3 processor? why would they put in a slower processor in a new phone?
Can u tell me what is name of 2nd game....plzz reply

* Camera takes ages for the shutter, unless you turn off all the extras.
* Video formats now unsupported
* Light/flash is dim as hell
* Blocking mode doesn't work properly - still get notifications with sound and led & screen still illuminate
* No lock screen quick launches
* No Lock screen extra page(s)
* Switch it on and it keeps reminding you about the back cover
* Charge it up and it keeps reminding you about the stupid usb cover
* Stupid usb cover is fiddly especially in the dark and with it on wont fit a dock properly - Also heard reports of it breaking off (google it)
* Fingerprint scanner is crap locked me out BIG time
* Colour is too rich even when set to lowest setting (used a professional photo screen calibration tool and confirms it)
* 2gb of RAM (WOW) 80% or more of that is pre used so effectively you get less than 500mb
* Records is 4k (GREAT :) ) but only plays back in 1080p W.T.H?
* Not too water proof after all (youtube it)
* IR blaster is a pain in the arse gave up with it.
* Too many background apps running
* Too many forced app downloads - download em and they crap out other apps on the phone
* In app drawer when creating folders they can't be added to a page with other apps, App drawer folders have their own page.
* No FM Radio
* Taking panoramic shots there is no separate shutter click (sound) when you get to another section and found to be a pain.
* Switch from camera to video and it auto starts recording video.
* Volume keys no activate shutter making you zoom by fingers on the screen (found a couple of people who dropped and cracked the screen as holding 1 handed while trying to zoom)
* Screen still cracks when you fart on it.
Hi? what the color is the best? black version or white version?
I'd say white
Black
Lost it at "INTENSE WORKOUT"!
Also looking forward to similar comparison between hTC m7 & m8.
Already done weeks ago, alongside the review video. Enjoy! ^M

XC spec supports up to 2TB, so if formatted correctly (most likely FAT32) all of these phones may continue to support higher capacities in the near future.
Sounds like fuel for another feature. Thanks for the feedback! ^M
Great video, by the way. I've always followed PocketNow and Michael Fisher. In my humble opinion, he's is one of the best tech reviewers in the business.
Yep, I agree. The other factor is SD card cost. From memory, a card that size does not come cheap.
Elizabeth S True, especially compared to the amount of space you can get with an external hard drive for that price.

Can u tell me the game on that galaxy s5.. i really want it..
I think pocketnow should do a comparison between the gs4 active and the gs5 considering there both ip67 certified
What im going to chose? S5 or S4 im going to buy it in monday? Pls answer me!!!!
Older generation devices are easier to recommend these days because of marginal differences but its less likely that an OEM will push updates for those older devices which is still quite important.
Lol the S5 does look like my grandma and grandpas Kitchen table from the side xD
What about s4 active? Wouldn't that be on par or better than the s5
Cool vid :)
I have kinda small hands do you think that the s5 would be good or the s4 for my hands?
Honestly the S5
what about the front camera???
What is the name of the game he was playing
I have a lg volt and i want to upgrade and they say that the s5 is better but im not sure yet to get the s4 or s5 which one should i get
S5
S4
s5
Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S5 comparison would be cool :D
How i wish there was a brand who just come back to the basics.
The best Hardware Specs, the bigger battery you can put, the lighter OS with they can put (with less things running on the background as never before) and the smaller the phone they can make.
Then you should get a S5 and make it run in ultra saving mode. Lasts more than 12 days.

But it is a waste of money to buy features that will never use.
A phone as i descrive would be much cheaper than a Galaxy.
I would prefere to use a Nexus as a base to do the software modifications i mention (i done with all my phones to last at least 4 days in heavy use).
wait for the oppo find 7 cyanogen mod or One Plus One
Oneplus One, google it!
Top hardware, running Cyanogenmod, awesome Camera, no useless features!

I despise cyanogen mod ;)
Stock kitkat without a single skin or feature add and only moded to allow to take off google services on background is fine (i know cyanogenmod do it but they change too much for my taste)
what it is name music in this video who know?
Your right, cant say the same about plastic phones...
Just drop the htc one one time and its ruined, then you drop the galaxy s5, probably the back will get off, but the phone is protected. Thats the reason why plastic phone are better, they are also not that heavy and have got the better grip.
Is the S5 about the same size as the Samsung Galaxy J7??? I'm trying to get away from the enormous size of the J7 I have now but it seems like the S5 might be about the same size as my J7 :-(
