"Also, using a tap to wake up the screen, or to put it to sleep, feels much more modern than mashing a physical button." That's exactly why every major Android OEM uses on-screen buttons instead of hardware or capacitive buttons. Android introduced on-screen buttons back in 2011 with Ice Cream Sandwich. Samsung is still living in the past by refusing to follow suit.
Tapping the screen to wake/sleep the phone has nothing to do with capacitive buttons. It is to serve as an alternative to pressing the unlock button which is typically located on the top or side of the phone. This is a feature that will likely become more prevalent, as the screen size of phones continues to increase. Rather than having to stretch and reach for the unlock button, you can simply tap the screen to unlock it.
Some of us actually like the physical buttons, you know. Although I would prefer a touch sensitive button (like the multitask and back button) as opposed to a physical button, I still would rather have those than the on screen buttons.
Recently upgraded to the LG G3, my thoughts: Battery Life: Was a concern, but that was before I got little over 6 hours on-screen time at normal use without power saver on. Screen: What happened to the pixels, I can't even make out any? 538PPI is incredible on this display, font is slightly sharper. Color correction seems pretty decent. Camera: Low light isn't top notch but is pretty damned good. Shooting video at 4K is pretty impressive as well. Use: Optimus UI seems to be rather snappy and really clean/minimal interface, but I haven't gotten the chance to install too much yet for the possibility for lag yet. The back buttons take a little bit to get used to but work extremely well. Cons: Screen isn't the best in daylight(like most phones) and the back of the phone around the camera and top part of the screen heats up a little with extended use. Nothing terrible, but it should be noted. My deciding point to get this phone over the M8 was the removable battery and higher PPI screen. The back-facing speaker was originally a down side over the M8's front facing speakers, but I normally use my headphones anyways or flip the phone around if I want to listen to Pandora. The camera is also solid as hell on the G3. After seeing some of the pictures which take advantage of the HTC's "ultra-pixel" cameras, it wasn't that impressive IMO. Overall, I'm very happy with the G3 as my new daily driver.
Thank's for this great review/comparison! I own the G3 S since some days and go totally with your Arguments. The G3 is a good and fast Smartphone, but it's more an accessory than a everyday life Tool. I don't want to miss it at all anymore =)
I find thin border around screen on later phones extremely annoying, because sometimes when holding phone my skin is touching the edge of the screen and making "accidental touches". I wondered for some time what's wrong with my S4 because it suddenly started acting weird but then noticed that when I held phone certain way my skin was in contact with the edge of the screen. Feels like user must have creepy long fingers in order to use these things properly lol
just got a g3 for my wife today, she has the note 2 and got 3 replacements from the warranty in less than 2 years, but because she broke the first one then lost the second one and then broke the third one again!lols im just hoping she will gonna love this phone and if she does, i hope she will appreciate it even more than her note 2s. good review by the way!
This was tough for me, I was torn between the S5, One M8, and G3 when I bought a phone. I didn't like the M8's camera and that was relatively important to me, and I decided not to go with the S5 because it seems every Android user and their dog has one. So I got the G3, and I adore it... for the most part. The features that make it unique (knock code, button placement, etc) are amazing to me, but it does have its flaws, one of which being the horrid lag I experience every once in a while. A simple reboot usually fixes it but it can get to the point where it's almost unbearable to use. I only experience this lag during multitasking; it runs games like a breeze. I recently encountered a software issue with my mic where it doesn't work on any app on my phone except the camera. If you came here to see which one you want and decide on the G3, bear in mind that you should probably get a tempered glass screen protector. The digitizer is attached to the screen so that means if you so much crack your glass it could render the device useless. I'll occasionally use the S5 of a friend and it seems like a nice phone. The bright screen is nice. I know that it's a great phone, and I can't say it would be a 'bad' phone to choose. Aaaaand that's my input for anyone who is torn between the two like I was :D
Do you mean it acts like it's going to start up but then doesn't and repeats that? If so, that, my friend, is called a bootloop. Happened to mine back in October. Your phone is bricked. But, if you have important pictures and other files on it, there is a way to get it to boot all the way into the actual phone. You'll probably think I'm lying but I kid you not, it works. You'll have to dissemble your phone and remove your motherboard. Bake the motherboard at 365 for 10 minutes and then let it cool. Put it back together and it should power on for you long enough to back everything up. However, I have heard cases where the phone continues to work for months but will eventually do it again. It's not reliable at this point
The motherboard. The inside of the device. Look up disassembly videos of the G3 and you'll know what I'm talking about. You can try changing the battery but most likely it's a bootloop. It's a VERY frequent problem on LG devices
I wish back then I would have done my homework and got the LG G3 instead of the S5. I have a Note 4 and an LG G3 right now, and I'm so loving the LG G3! I have the Octos MOD on the LG and it just smokes everything! I have around 10 to 12 applications installed and it feels so good to have an Apple like experience, with the convenience of multitasking and customization! If you could strip the Note 4 down, that would be so freaking awesome! Who invented Knox? What the hell were they thinking!
I just got the G3 and I have been very happy with my decision. The phone is just full of smart ideas. It's super fast, a giant screen but on a somewhat compact device, and the buttons on the back are a cool feature. For $50 less than the S5, I got a higher clocked CPU, 1GB of extra ram, and 16GB of extra storage. The S5 is a great device, but the G3 is a little more refreshing coming from a galaxy s3.
I had no idea the brightness in screen is that different in the sun light on the LG G3. I come across this problem with my HTC One M7, hmm that kind of sucks.
I go with the s5 I love the samsung eco system the boat load of features LG just doesn't do it for me but the tap the screen feature is sweet LG just isn't there yet
My G3 was second hand this year. Paid 100 bucks for it. Came with its charger and box. Screen is minty fresh. Although when it heats up its got alot to do with pushing the pixels on a 2K screen.
I enjoyed this review. Thank you for the comparison of using it as a tool or having an eye for detail. That was appreciated, and really did help put both devices in perspective. Now I know if I could ever buy one I would buy the lg l3.
off the topic. i have a lumia 1520, before leaving for work around 7:20 am. i put everything on ON, the wifi, screen brightness on high, gps is on. on work sometimes i surf the net using my office's wifi connection. watch youtube videos and play games, especially asphalt 8, and other high intense games. picking up calls and msgs. what i really like about this phone is that, by the time i arrived home i still have 40% battery! and im a heavy user kind of guy. NOW my QUESTION is, is LG G3' battery performance and the S5's any good? like having everything turned on?
Ive had nothing but problems with LG phones, especially with their SD card slot not being able to read it. Both phones look nice but i went with the Galaxy S5, ive had for 2 weeks now and its simply amazing. I actually like the design of the s5 and no finger prints on the back is nice. The camera is amazing and way superior than the G3. Also i didnt like the button layout being in the back of the G3. And the fact the S5 is water resistant is also a nice security feature just in case of an accident was to occur. But its what you prefer that matters. No matter what phone you get both of them are very good phones.
Your review is spot on! I know now what type of user I am. :) That's why I'm leaning more towards the G3 because of its design and I'm gentle with my phones.
Why didn't they (Samsung and LG) do a combination of both phones ;'( LG G3 looks so good and its design is amazing. Just if it would be waterproof... And S5's display is better because of higher contrast and better looking colors. (Not so natural colors compared to G3, but looks better)
He's using the Korean version of this LG G3. The international/EU/American version has been reported to have a BRIGHTER screen though not quite as bright as the S5 its just fine and actually has better outdoor visibility than the HTC M8.
Picking up my G3 Thursday. Been pro iPhone since the 3 but now feel it's time for a change. Tried the Z1 a few months back. Took it back after 24 hours. The OS was horrible by comparison. Fingers crossed the G3 is way better.
Every flagship phone is going to be top notch, it comes down to what YOU prefer or what company you simply like the best, I recently bought a G3 and I have no complaints, I can honestly say I would probably be just as happy if I bought a S5 or HTC One M8 or whatever else, all these phones are beasts, mine is rooted with custom ROMS, I prefer customization and I could do all that on any of the top smart phones so for me, it doesn't really matter what phone I get because Im gona customize the shit out of it anyway, cheers mates :-)
I have a lg g2 and i get an upgrade in 2 months. But neither phones have showed me i really need them. The difference between my last optimus g into a LG G2 was massive! Only thing that would pull me is a water proof phone.
I dont like soft keys. I have the M8 and i dont know how many times while playing games, like Fruit Ninja or Pac Man, and i accidentally bring up the soft keys. Its annoying. I prefer the buttons on my S5.
You can hide the softkeys on all the apps if you wanted to with some apps on the play store, one being called all in one gestures try that out I'm sure you won't have a problem with the soft keys after that. However that said you can not use the keyboard with immersive mode turned on, but you can toggle between showing and hiding with a gesture so you can access the keyboard again!
1300l already have one. The S5 just feels like a more all-around product than the G3. And though having a bit smaller display, it is still the better and probably even the best display right now. And the S5 just looks good in person too.
Ios and android both are great, ios being more snappy and more secured. Android at the same time has more to offer in terms of features and customizability. :) but both are great in their own way its just a matter of preference mainly of security vs features.
***** But then iOS fan boys say that about Android fan boys as well? Whose right? No one, just the OS developers getting people to fight over their operating systems.
***** Bro I see you have let your emotion get the better of you... there is no denying the fact that i like android more than apple but when i said security i meant the option in android when you can go in a phones recovery by pressing the volume and home button and you can factory reset all the data and the phone will be new as before i'll see you find your android then :D plus ios not only doesn't have the recovery option but its hence more secured.... top that!
I'm with you. I never understood why people get all Crips vs. Bloods about iOS and Android. It depends on personal taste, but both are generally efficient. Idiots who get worked up over that sort of thing mean that they have actually invested a part of their fucking being and character in association with a phone.lol Pathetic. Who cares?
Could you share what Air Fighter game that is you play? Its posted in many of your videos, and I want to try it out. It looks like a lot of fun. Thanks!
Might sound like a dumb question but does the water resistant s5 mean you could take pictures underwater? I'm not saying take the thing scuba diving but just stick it under water take a pic and bring it back up.
Just got the S5 and pretty impressed! It was to replace the S4 which is awful (dim screen difficult to see outdoors, awful camera/video, slow lagging processor, etc) but really love the S5's fingerprint sensor, heart rate monitor, brighter & larger screen, faster processor, and better camera/video. I actually like the LG G3 too and got it to replace the S4 but shattered the screen in a freak accident. I got a mint S5 for just $70 so I'm happy with it so far.
Cool video glad you did it in my city Boston and I'm an LG G2, G3 guy I had samsung galaxy s4 and it was okay but I'm not a fan anymore they have gestures most people in the world don't even use in which is one reason why the S4 cost so much. On My LG G2 I use everything from the screen tap to wake it up when I get on that orange and red line you seen. I use the one hand keyboard that they have to text and dial numbers, the Quick memo, the Quick remote and most of all the Quick Translator so I'm going to the the LG G3 soon though
ok, I want to buy a smartphone(upgrading from a lg l5, so i guess everything will be a huge step forward) and i don't know which one, between :LG g3, SONY Z2, the S5 or the NOTE 3?
Honestly I would pick the Galaxy S5. Reasons being Samsung has a better history of software updates and the water resistance. I haven't seen it but I'm not convinced the 2k screen is worth the processor hit and dimness.
Pocketnow Since there might not be a Z2 vs G3 comparison, and seeing as the G3 and S5 cameras are competitive, and the S5 and Z2 are competitive in daylight, does that mean that all three are about the same or where would you rank them in terms of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd? I'm actually not particularly impressed with the G3's camera. I see some of that oil painting-type effect that I get on my HTC One so I'm worried about that if I don't go Sony (should it ever come to the US...).
cris ranjel no way the g3 beats the other! the note 4 rules both of them as well! G3 battery life is not close to the note 4 and it heats up way more! the note 4 also packs the better display along with the s5, resolution isn't always the deciding form factor! amoled is way better than i think the IPS ? on the g3.
What I like about the G3, it's curve fits nice in tight pants, much harder to see the block in your pocket. What I like most about the Samsung, The AMOLED screen, much brighter in the sun and uses less power as the entire screen panel in an array of LED's which both function as the backlight and the pixels. LG is good at making smooth functioning phones, I tend to have more errors and slow functions on the Samsung products. The camera on the LG rocks except the lack of functions, I use the panoramic photo mode often on my Note 3. I know that once you go AMOLED, it's hard to go any other direction.
Not sure if the people here have the G3 but i do. Build quality on the G3 is great to me. Feels great in the hand...feels solid. Even though its a 13mp camera it's still great. Battery life is impressive and no the 2k screen does not drain battery unless you are watching 2k videos for a while. LG did a good job.....no disappointment here
You should've waited for the American G3 to do this comparison, if you can, please get the Korean S5 with the 2K display and Snapdragon 805 and compare it to the American S5 and Korean G3
which one should i take? i love lg's design so much and the ui and some functions are nice too, but samsung has these MANY interestig features, like ipxx, fingersprint sensor, heartrate sensor (maybe not that usefzl), many gestures like smart stay ..., nice ui, better display, more camera functions, ...
I am using the G3 and I regret not buying the S5 when I was at the shop. The G3 is great, but it's not practical just like what the reviewer says. It gives you a desirable forms, but it's not ideal for everyday use. The rear key buttons are nuisance to use as well as having to resort to tapping the screen rather than pressing a physical home button. The software based back and menu buttons that keep disappearing and popping made it totally annoying to use this phone.
No 1 talks about reception anymore. I use to have the g2 and loved everything about it except the reception. Hands down the worst reception I ever had on a phone. I traded it on Craigslist for the LG flex and the reception was better but still on the weak side. I don't know if it's a lg thing but it bugs me since I love their phones. I got the galaxy s5 mean while I wait for the g3 to come out. But damn, my s5 had great reception and I'm thinking what if I get the g3 and it's reception sucks just like the g2 Ima b pissed off. Plus i don't know how much its really dim screen display in sunlight is going to bother me.
which ones slower? i have an S3 and i understand its full of bloatware, so it slows down after a while and gains lag and also much longer delay when home button is pushed. Is the G3 and S5 like this? Do they gain any lag or delay after being used for a while?
You know when you hear *The Voice* it's going to be a good review.
::hat tip:: Much obliged! ^M
Agreed.
I totally agree!!

True indeed my friend
I've actually always liked the capacitive buttons over the on screen buttons
tap to unlock screen has been introduced in 2012 by Nokia
Tapping the screen to wake/sleep the phone has nothing to do with capacitive buttons. How come you didnt mention the screen on the G3 is 0.4mm bigger whilst being almost the same size as the S5
mm or inch ?
dani sea mm i didnt say inch
but isnt it 0.4 inch bigger ???
It's 10mm bigger, not 4mm.
It is 0.4'' bigger, though.

Thumbs up!
It's amazing how influential a video review can be on your choice of devices.

LG G3 looks so good and its design is amazing. Just if it would be waterproof...
And S5's display is better because of higher contrast and better looking colors. (Not so natural colors compared to G3, but looks better)
Superb comparison, Michael! Keep the good work!
Michael Fisher you do the best reviews!.
He's using the Korean version of this LG G3. The international/EU/American version has been reported to have a BRIGHTER screen though not quite as bright as the S5 its just fine and actually has better outdoor visibility than the HTC M8.
Michael, love your reviews
glad someone could make an honest comparison without getting emotions or excitement involved.
I got the G3 and it's soooooo cool :D
I know I love my G3!
Me 2 XD
Wow im so happy mine will arrive today
I just fixed my G3 using the LG Flash Tool, and I'm loving it. 5.0.1 is gr8.

What kind of rom you running on your g3 do they ha 've aosp for it was thinking about getting one but wasn't sure about development support
Hello, I would so appreciate if you could tell me what dslr did you use to record this video? And what lens? Thank you
Michael's voice in the sample video Is hilarious, but also a great review :)
Good review Mike!
You are the best Michael! The main reason why I watch Pocketnow videos :)
I have a lg g2 and i get an upgrade in 2 months. But neither phones have showed me i really need them. The difference between my last optimus g into a LG G2 was massive! Only thing that would pull me is a water proof phone.
excellent vedio......
to conclusion what is more good?
Great video bro. Keep up the good work. And thanks for making me like my GS5 even more lol :)
***** The app all in one gestures did not work
You forgot to say "I´m Michael Fisher, this is Pocketnow and this is..." I am so used to your reviews that I missed it.
Perfectly summed up the g3's multi tasking: "you have the choice between overcrowded and space wasting"
i watched this on my g3 its great . camera is clean , screen is beatiful , perfornmance is a beast and i love the double tap to awaken and unlock .
Call me crazy but I still prefer my Nexus 5 over most phones out now. (M8 seems like a good phone, might be too large though)
Good phone (g3) vs bad phone (s5) :P
bad phone (g3) vs good phone (s5) :p
both are good, i still cant decide which one to take
Alex Schmidt take the S5. Feels like a more refined product. And that display is really gorgeous.
Ernest Marvin Esteban
I disagree strong on that. But if you think so, then im sure you will be happy with the S5
1300l already have one. The S5 just feels like a more all-around product than the G3. And though having a bit smaller display, it is still the better and probably even the best display right now. And the S5 just looks good in person too.
U shot that video in Boston? Seen the red line.
Is it just me, or am I the only one who thinks iOS and Android are both good?
Who cares?
Just so you guys know, I am using a galaxy tab pro 8.4. Not a bad tablet. My phone is an iPhone 4. Not a bad phone.
G3 all the way! Even though i have a nexus 5 :P
Mik you are the best dude
are ***
Hassan Ali actually you can edit your comment bro.. hehe
I've tried 😁
I don't know why it didn't work
Hassan Ali hmm.. maybe the system is down at that time haha..
okay then
Ariq Rizqurrahman Fatah I figured it out ..lol
best reviewer out there, way to go!!
Could you give me your verdict of which one is better.
Could you share what Air Fighter game that is you play? Its posted in many of your videos, and I want to try it out. It looks like a lot of fun. Thanks!
Hey Fish, can you train all the other reviewers in the world how to do spot on, unbiased and well orated reviews like yours? Thanks!
when are all the apps going to be optimized for 1440p? its kind of pointless to have a 1440p display and you can only view 720p/1080p content
Excellent as usual Mike
Might sound like a dumb question but does the water resistant s5 mean you could take pictures underwater? I'm not saying take the thing scuba diving but just stick it under water take a pic and bring it back up.
Omg.. Awesomest review ever!!!!! Great job Michael.
on of the best reviews ive seen
Both please!
Is it wrong that I'm looking at the LG G3 hoping it has a run out as a Nexus as well?
Great review thx
What about the price Michael? :)
ok, I want to buy a smartphone(upgrading from a lg l5, so i guess everything will be a huge step forward) and i don't know which one, between :LG g3, SONY Z2, the S5 or the NOTE 3?
6:40 isn't that video about launching a r/c plane off a r/c aircraft carrier? I literally just watched that video...
Can you guys please do a comparison between the g3 and the xperia z2 please???
Pls make a video about the G3 vs S5LTE-A, thankyou
Are you kidding us ? On lgs notification bar you choose Auto (screen light) and say negative to G3 ...
Honestly I would pick the Galaxy S5. Reasons being Samsung has a better history of software updates and the water resistance. I haven't seen it but I'm not convinced the 2k screen is worth the processor hit and dimness.
Is it the battery that heats up in the g3 ? ( or like the whole phone )
Michael Fisher makes the best reviews i think.
Wht game was tht??I hve been lukn fr a good Air Plane stimulation game fr some time now
Love the comparison
LG G3 vs Sony Xperia Z2 please? ;)
Our Xperia Z2 is with ***** in Oradea. If we can secure another, we'll do our best! ^M
Where did you guys get that blue samsung galaxy s5 wallpaper?
I'm not interested in either phone - I just watched it because it's Michael Fisher!
I'm going to be getting a new phone soon (current phone: iPhone 4) and mi wondering what phone i should get any suggestions?
I'm debating what phone I would like, I'm between note 4 g3 or s5 which one do you recommend?
g3
LG g3
S6....so much nicer though just got rid of my G3 but I'm good with phones as of right now.
cris ranjel no way the g3 beats the other! the note 4 rules both of them as well! G3 battery life is not close to the note 4 and it heats up way more! the note 4 also packs the better display along with the s5, resolution isn't always the deciding form factor! amoled is way better than i think the IPS ? on the g3.
Note 4 beats all except g flex 2
LG did a good job.....no disappointment here
I have an iPhone 5c, and I'm definitely switching over to Android between these two phones! I'm leaning more towards the G3 because of the 32gb..
You should've waited for the American G3 to do this comparison, if you can, please get the Korean S5 with the 2K display and Snapdragon 805 and compare it to the American S5 and Korean G3
Best review I've seen yet
which one should i take? i love lg's design so much and the ui and some functions are nice too, but samsung has these MANY interestig features, like ipxx, fingersprint sensor, heartrate sensor (maybe not that usefzl), many gestures like smart stay ..., nice ui, better display, more camera functions, ...
MF, you just made my Happy Hour Happier! TGIF & Cheers.
So basically both phones are just the same thing with a different case.
James Meagher pretty much, except for the display, & design.
otis ellis One thing I found annoying with edge to edge screen is when u hold the phone your fingertips is always accidentally touching something.
James Meagher not so with the G3 because the buttons are on the back so you will hold it differently from what I've heard from reviewers.
otis ellis Maybe.
thank you for the info =)
I am using the G3 and I regret not buying the S5 when I was at the shop. The G3 is great, but it's not practical just like what the reviewer says. It gives you a desirable forms, but it's not ideal for everyday use. The rear key buttons are nuisance to use as well as having to resort to tapping the screen rather than pressing a physical home button. The software based back and menu buttons that keep disappearing and popping made it totally annoying to use this phone.
so what do you think is the best phone between samsung and LG?
Got the s5, s5 active, and g3 and I prefer to use the s5 active just because I love the camouflage green lol
What phone does MF use personally? I think that would be a good video.
Plus i don't know how much its really dim screen display in sunlight is going to bother me.
what is the name of the jet game you are playing on the g3
which ones slower? i have an S3 and i understand its full of bloatware, so it slows down after a while and gains lag and also much longer delay when home button is pushed. Is the G3 and S5 like this? Do they gain any lag or delay after being used for a while?
Android is Android and Android will lag. But Samsung has touchwiz and will probably make it lag a bit more than the G3.
Mohamad Sadeddin I have never had lag with stock android but only stock, the g3 lags a bit for me now and then.
Please Help, does the LG G3 Uk version has a qi wireless charger ability, thanks people.
I bought my G3 recently and Im so satisfied with it.. Its a great smartphone
Why would you buy either of these when the Nexus 5 is still on the market!?!?
