If it wasn't for the camera and lack of water resistance I would preorder this phone right now. Xperia Z2 just seems like a much better option this year. ( front- facing speakers, 3gb ram, 20.7MP camera, Snapdragon 801, SD slot, 5.2 inch IPS display)
Wait, water resistance does this to your phone: 1)all your ports are blocked by ugly flaps. if one of those break, and they will, water resistance gone. 2) speakers are of ridiculously bad quality. And nobody even needs water resistance; it's just a cool feature.
dracokev There is a test comparing speaker quality between Z2 and new HTC one and the revier claims that they are in fact very good on both devices and that Z2 is only slightly inferior When it comes to flaps... The headphone jack which I would use the most does not have them. The rest of the flaps on the other hand don't bother me and protect the ports from dust etc.

The HTC One M8 GPE seems like the perfect phone right now... An SD card slot, nice battery life, great screen, high build quality, good looking phone(*sexiest phone on the planet*), great specs and stock Android.
I am very new to Android and HTC... (I am like more to apple) But im getting a new phone, and im kind of bored of Apple Devices... same repeated stuff to me. So I wanted to get the HTC One M8. I was just not sure which HTC One M8 to get... Do I get HTC One M8 or HTC One M8 Google Play Edition. I have no Idea, 0%, of what the the difference is of these phones... But I did see a RUclips video online where this guy was playing games on those 2 phones, and it lagged on the HTC One M8, but ran very smoothly on HTC One M8 Google Play Edition. So Im more to Google Play Edition atm, but im just not so sure... Cuz I also saw some Unboxing videos for the both of these Devices, but on the Box of the HTC One M8, it had more features written on it but for the HTC One M8 Google Play Edition, it didnt have those features written on the front of the box... So I was wondering if those features are their for the both of these Devices or only for the HTC One M8? Could anybody help me here? Just like tell me what exactly is the differences between the HTC One M8 and the HTC One M8 Google Play Edition? Thank You!
All andriod devices that are released under a brand like HTC Samsung, Motorola,lg all release their own version of the stock Google developed Android OS. This is called the f word or fragmentation. So what Google does is release a base android version and then developers for each brand like HTC or Samsung put their own personal twist on what google originally released. HOWEVER this ruins the experience of what Google worked so hard to develop which is stock Android. As a result non stock android such as htcs version called Sense or Samsung's version called touch wiz ultimately slow down the device because they've added their own stuff to stock android. So to answer your question the Regular HTC One M8 has the sense skin or altered stock andriod and the Google play edition has no altered version of android and ships with stock android.
If you want the pure stock android experience thats been eliminated with carrier's bloat wares that slows the device down, then I recommend the google edition. However, if you want the custom skin that has its own taste and style that has couple of near features such as, Zoey, blink feed, etc. then I recommend the HTC One m8 from different carriers. Both phones can be rooted and change both of their UIs by installing custom roms, but I recommend to look at instructional videos of installing custom roms on RUclips and get a good understanding of doing it. If you mess it up and get your phones bricked, you won't be able to fix it, even with the HTC warranty because rooting the devices voids the warranty. I hope this helped. If you have any questions PM me or send me a message on my inbox!
The only difference is software, so you can buy the normal one and then install the Google Edition ROM afterwords. Sounds complicated but it's pretty easy, as long as you can follow instructions. But bottom line - if you want plain android with very fast updates, go google play edition. If you like HTC's blinkfeed, camera app, or other HTC-only features, get the normal one.
I love getting recommendations for these older videos. I loved my gunmetal grey M8 and I wish I could relive those days. Everyone wanted to play music from my phone!! Shame HTC kinda went downhill after this.
one of the best phones ever made still using it to this day and maybe going to upgrade this year to HTC 10 but it can't deliver the same sound quality sadly :(
This was an absolute beast of a phone. I still have it in my drawer, and I installed sTeam rom. Battery life aside, it is still absolutely usable to this day.
I just ordered the HTC in gold today. It'll be my final droid and after that, I'm changing over to greatness. Apple power! I do like the app to turn the tv off and on. I'll be messing with people all day with that lol.
Chris Carter how do you make decisions with technology 2 years ahead of time? Phones are constantly getting better that we have no idea where we'll be in 2 years. Not trying to sway you either way just curious how you're so sure you'll go to Apple.
Dante Cantal well I made the decision pretty easy. Cause at first I was going to just go ahead and change over to iphone. The only reason I held back on that move was because I've always wanted to try the HTC out first. Mainly because of the speakers on it. In two years I won't care for droids and I'm hoping Apple phones come out with the same speaker as the HTC. If not, I'll just do without it. My m8 will be in the mail today. I've heard great things bout it but I'm not getting my hopes up. The only droid I really liked was the casio commando.
I don't like when reviewers say stuff like "The One as a decent camera, not the best but do the job" like if it wasn't much important because, guys, the camera (and BoomSound) is touted as THE reason to buy this phone according to HTC. Basically, it's suppose to be a star feature, not a 50/50 Good/Bad thing. You can't dismiss this just like that, HTC need some serious beating and rething it's "UltraPixels" strategy.
This video almost makes me want to get the classic silver color over the gunmetal gray..but I think I'll stick with the gray to try something new. Getting my M8 in two days! :D
I thought this video was so good when I first saw it 3 years ago, and because of it I decided to buy one of my own. 3 years later, I still think that it was a great buy! Thanks MKBHD! Love your crispy videos.
This new version of the Sense looks beautiful BUT: why does HTC stick with that crappy 4mpx camera again?? That's even less than the front-facing camera, when did selfies become more important than normal pics?
Not really a big difference. The camera is still technically 4 megapixels except the pixels are 3 times the size, allowing more light to come through. This results in better low light shots, but is still essentially the resolution of a 4 megapixel camera.
Bravo Whiskey I can't believe there's still people saying that, now I understand why they're still selling the phone with such a crappy camera. Marques even did an 'Explained' video, do you even follow this channel? It's still 4mpx, they simply are sub-divided in 3pixels each which does NOT make a 12mpx camera. They simply get more light while shooting, nothing more, and for that price a decent camera wouldn't hurt the price that much. I was considering this but I'll pass as I did with the first one for this same reason sadly and that's bad, if they weren't stupid they would put a better camera for Samsung fanatics to switch over(Samsung fans are used to that) and HTC would sell way more than that plastic things.
Bravo Whiskey If that was sarcasm it was pretty bad. Not to diss you or anything but do you realize there's still people, expecially the ones who bought the first One, that still believes that? How could we know you're not the classic internet idiot? Plus, most people says things about jokes and sarcasm after writing something wrong. Not saying it's your case but the world's full of dumb people and the 'sarcasm' wasn't even that clear.

rahmanshadman Just because it has 2,3 ghz quad doesnt mean its more powerful. the chance of Your laptop and your pc being better is 95%. The architecture on the snapdragons mobile cpus isnt close to as powerful as intel or amd PC processors. Not saying snapdragon is bad, they make the best mobile cpus, but mobile cpu
Sayeedur123 exactly, thats what I was going to say, but I thought people wouldnt understand. Mobile CPU: 32 bit. PC CPU: 64 Bit. The iphone 5S has a duo 1.3 ghz 64 bit CPU in it, and isnt the highest on the benchmark, but pretty high, especially for single core performance as it is 64 bit. But 64 bit isnt optimized for mobile use, so it doesnt make a big difference.
***** Yes, there is a good chance it runs faster, and it probably does. But its not more powerful. The A7 chip from apple isnt as powerful as the snapdragon 800,801,805 etc, but it runs as fast, as iOS is really simple and plain
I just got the Google Pixel 2 XL recently, and it takes me back in some ways to this phone. This was my absolute favorite phone ever because it was such a beast. I just held this in my hand yesterday at the store, and it feels just awesome! Screams Quality and Butter-y speed. I would say #S4 users should upgrade to #M8 instead of #S5.
Eh, no. TouchWiz is still a bit clunky and not an ideal Android experience if you ask me. Sense 6 is smooth and fast. But to each their own. The S5 is still a good phone, I'm just kinda done with Samsung altogether until they try something new and better.
Dustin Crooke I am really happy with the camera. It's the best I've used so far, close to the Nokia 808 specially with that dual LED. There are enough features to keep you busy and occupied as well.

Kinda like iPhones now since there's gold and curved edges but I definitely want to try it! And I want to hear the speakers how they sound
Man if you try the m8's speakers then other phones will sound like shit afterwards. Do it at your own risk lol
Feels crazy to be almost watching this in 2024. What a beautiful device, one of my favorites next to the Bold 9900
2:55 when MKBHD says 128 gigs of storage is insane and my galaxy s10+ has 512 base storage with another 512 sd card...
How's the battery on the s10+
@@davidson5910 it's been holding up well since I got it in May. I've picked up both a OnePlus 7 pro and a galaxy note 10. Still like the s10+

amazing performance even though it's 2 years old
for those considering getting one go for it but I don't recommend the 16GB model even though you have an option to expand storage
great phone great brand
enough is said.
which version of Android ?
Raphaël Deknop I got it with Android 6.0
Raphaël Deknop but if you got it with Android 4.4 you can still update it
Ab0da 656 Actually it is a great budget phone for 2016. CyanogenMod still supports it. I picked one up for $130 in great condition. Unlock bootloader and install TWRP recovery. Installed CyanogenMod 13 with Pixel Launcher.
how is the quick charge ?
Let's be honest, you did not look for this.
RUclips has bought us all together again.
Hi
Lol yes WESKER you right.. im not looking for this
I did.
I am fed up of this comment being posted in every video i open
I still using this legend phone I wished HTC kept the same design and toughness but sadly the HTC 10 can't compete with others especially the S7 same range .
That design looks so good even today
***** Hey Marques. Do you think I should get this phone even after 8 months of it's release date? Or I should look for a newer better phone? Thanks man. I'm looking to buy a new phone ASAP for Christmas. You're the best tech guy on youtube. Love your videos.
m9 comes out in march

Awesome! Thanks dude. I'm gonna wait for it to be released.
I truly enjoy watching your reviews ***** They are Very detailed, clean, very Professional. Well done!
I had this for about 2 years, it was an amazing phone.
It is 2019 and we miss you HTC :(
Well HTC is going to focus on smartphones again since they invested like 1.1 billion on development. They aren't done yet
still using my m8 in 2018, i changed the battery for one out on an m9 and it cured my dying at 20% problem
Wait, water resistance does this to your phone:
1)all your ports are blocked by ugly flaps. if one of those break, and they will, water resistance gone.
2) speakers are of ridiculously bad quality.
And nobody even needs water resistance; it's just a cool feature.
dracokev There is a test comparing speaker quality between Z2 and new HTC one and the revier claims that they are in fact very good on both devices and that Z2 is only slightly inferior
When it comes to flaps... The headphone jack which I would use the most does not have them. The rest of the flaps on the other hand don't bother me and protect the ports from dust etc.
***** Doood! Me and you have the same first name seriously. I've never met another Shem in my life. It's a pleasure

MKB4K IS HERE!
***** To me it looked like he shot it on RED ;-)
Just got this phone last week... honestly its amazing.. I just came from a Galaxy S3... Too me its like a mixture of Kit Kat + iOS interface.. its sleek and quite lovely..
Hey, mate. I also own an S3 and I'm really looking forward to buying this phone. Do you feel like the M8 is going to last you 2-3 years?
GDZLLR Hey man. def get it. Its great bro. Big improvment. The UI is different though.. its... much more "direct" and not as bloated as S3 features... quality wise so far its great man. really high quality phone... software wise and physically.. def 2-3 years indeed
Small world, going from S3 to M8 HK in a few days. Wanted the LG G3, but the M8 HK will have to do for now.
You'll love it man. im loving it so far. blazin fast too
Andre Frazier Hey, Andre. Thank you very much for your answer. :) I'll SURELY get it next week.
The way Marques said "A hundred and 28 gigs!!" :V
October 2017 and still rocking this phone. What a beast HTC made
I know someone still using this phone, going strong! He's in the process of trading up to the new U Ultra... When he showed me his M8 in depth, that inspired me to get a 10, and me likey!
I always watch your reviews last cause they the best. You do amazing work for a one man show thanks for you effects. P.S In my books you're right up there with the verge and pocketnow. Excellent reviews
RUclips algorithm is having a fun day
It got us to watch the video though. It knows what it's doing
I miss HTC so much, they were my favorite android phones and the One M8 was just great. Sad to see them almost non-existent.
The HTC One M8 GPE seems like the perfect phone right now...
An SD card slot, nice battery life, great screen, high build quality, good looking phone(*sexiest phone on the planet*), great specs and stock Android.
Ahhh, the nostalgia! Thank you RUclips algorithm for this recommendation.
I am very new to Android and HTC...
(I am like more to apple)
But im getting a new phone, and im kind of bored of Apple Devices... same repeated stuff to me.
Many people prefer the Google Play edition because the it uses stock android which many people like over HTC Sense
Marques this was the best phone purchase. It still turns on
Hope that the next HTC Flagship will have more megapixel camera and a more screen ratio. So that it will look much more better.
I would love an HTC One M8 vs. LG G3 video from MKBHD. Like if you agree!
Wowww. Dual camera, portrait mode; double speaker. Is this smartphone from 2018? 😂
Dude for 2014 this was better than an iPhone for me, even than any other phone, gosh, I miss my old M8
It was way ahead of its time. They just got screwed by better marketing from Apple and Samsung
I love getting recommendations for these older videos. I loved my gunmetal grey M8 and I wish I could relive those days. Everyone wanted to play music from my phone!! Shame HTC kinda went downhill after this.
one of the best phones ever made still using it to this day and maybe going to upgrade this year to HTC 10 but it can't deliver the same sound quality sadly :(
You guys heard it here first, mkbhd announces the LG G3 HTC One M8 Review!

THOSE PIXELS!
think a camera update would fix some of the problems?
Marlon Bishop it cant fix the main prob, the 4mp
I just ordered the HTC in gold today. It'll be my final droid and after that, I'm changing over to greatness. Apple power! I do like the app to turn the tv off and on. I'll be messing with people all day with that lol.
Droid been doing that shit
# DROID FOR LIFE lol
MrAssholebynature1 lol I will enjoy the HTC though. I'll have it for two years then after that, I'm going with Apple
Chris Carter Galaxy S5 the shit
The design is so eye-catching.
Nostalgia!!! Watching this video 2020 brings back a lot of memories! This is one of the most remembered phone that I have ever owned.
Getting one to see how it holds up
I don't like when reviewers say stuff like "The One as a decent camera, not the best but do the job" like if it wasn't much important because, guys, the camera (and BoomSound) is touted as THE reason to buy this phone according to HTC.
i have the gun metal gray... it looks and feels real nice... its a shame ill need to put on a case around it soon
There not MegaPixels they're UltraPixels, big difference.
Can you two not sense my sarcasm? Jesus, I got some work to do.
Using it since November 2014, almost 4 years later now and still good. Maybe I will keep it untill 5G smathphone in 2019
Yvann Marivint changed ur phone yet?
I changed the phone because i dropped it and the camera, screen and battery broke. I take a OnePlus 6 now.
Was the best phone I ever had. Just had to up grade early this year to the m10 not the 8 but good phone. If htc don't get back to where they was in years past....idk.
What are you using now?
It’s been ten years…
I can still remember the day that my mom got her brand new HTC M8, we were all impressed with the cool features of it!
As a Taiwanese, I’m really proud of HTC, it was a iconic brand;however, HTC nowadays ….😢
i still have this phone till now i can tell you this phone runs fast like new... i was amazed thats why till now im keeping it....and wathibg this review using htc one m8 including this comment😊😊😊
Watching in 2018
This thing is more powerful then my laptop!!!!
and your laptop is more powerful than my pc. trust me, my pc sucks
rahmanshadman Just because it has 2,3 ghz quad doesnt mean its more powerful. the chance of Your laptop and your pc being better is 95%.
You must have a shitty laptop then lol
God I miss this phone! It still looks high end
Still feels more premium than my pixel 7 and s10+

I just got the Google Pixel 2 XL recently, and it takes me back in some ways to this phone. This was my absolute favorite phone ever because it was such a beast. I regretted upgrading to the Galaxy S6 and giving this up. Still, this (and the one from the previous year) were the best phones ever at the time.
Yuri Sutton writing to you on mine, 2 years, still a beast
Don't be fooled by the megapixels on the camera, the m8 takes some pretty good pictures which is enough for most people.
I remember wanting this phone so bad
LG G3 gunna be the best phone of 2014 just like the LG G2 was of 2013
+1 but it depends on whether they make it too big; they can't go any larger. it's already as big as the S5
ok
Still have it in 2019. Screen lost a bit of pixels, now getting new htc one m8 from amazon. Very good for daily use and work. A monster of a phone...
I just held this in my hand yesterday at the store, and it feels just awesome! Screams Quality and Butter-y speed. I would say #S4 users should upgrade to #M8 instead of #S5.
GS5 is 2014-15's Superphone.
naa
or naaw
nawww
Eh, no. TouchWiz is still a bit clunky and not an ideal Android experience if you ask me. Sense 6 is smooth and fast. But to each their own. The S5 is still a good phone, I'm just kinda done with Samsung altogether until they try something new and better.
Nick Gee TV same I'm not a big fan of touch wiz. But Samsung phones do have nice specs so if I get one in the future I'll just get a launcher
did you shoot this review with the RED?

They need to update this phone and bring it back!
As always great video but not entirely sure I agree with everything said about the camera.
How do you feel about it (camera)? You seem to be quite the shutterbug..
Dustin Crooke I am really happy with the camera. It's the best I've used so far, close to the Nokia 808 specially with that dual LED. There are enough features to keep you busy and occupied as well.
I agree. There are some specs that are lacking but until/if I get a pic that's bad, I'm happy with it.
Dustin Crooke absolutely. The shutter speed is absolutely amazing. Still waiting on that damn Zoe app to be enabled. Looking forward to playing with that.
Very impressive.
I like the idea of turning the screen on without having to reach for the power button; I wish all phones had this feature!
