Phone provided by HTC for review.
The auto-rotate dependent on grip feature is innovative.
Yeah can't believe something this obvious was never implemented before.
Every phone needs this. I keep the auto rotate off all the time on my phone, but this might change it.
Duge Hick Lol Apple died when Steve Jobs died 😂😂😂 relevant my ass
DarkGreninja I guess that was sarcasm, if not then I just wanna laugh 🤣🤣
apple is still relevant as long as the kardashians use them
From 2011 to 2014 HTC was the coolest phone manufacturer.
the one htc one m7 commercial "turn up the love, turn up the love" nostalgiaaaaaa
Then... they messed up with the m9....
With Sony phones
Htc with 4mp camera
@@zadsazhad not 4mp, it's 4up (ultra pixel)
It's 2020, still no new phone from HTC, this was the last one :(
I wish we could go back to the m8 days :\

There’s the rumors that HTC will publish new 5g phone in 2020 the HTC fans from taiwan

I had one of those. It was absolutely horrible.
Yeah m8, me too
I miss HTC
@@jusamaster212 I see what you did there
Those days are over.😕
That smart rotate is a game changer.
Mt_Xinghuawei and honor has it which tracks your face .
yeaah
Akasha Gupta Yes, but I believe it uses more energy because it needs the front camera for that to work. This just uses the grip sensors or whatever. Also, this works at night.
Yeah, that's awesome
That was clever. Liked it too.
Sounds like those kind of things that in a few years will be as normal as any other featuer :P
The auto switching between portrait and landscape mode biased on your grip is sick!
Julius Burton Yeah, I hope that comes to more phones
utubejuan honor 10 has it
Damn its awsm
utubejuan I don't think it can just because everyone would need to get the side "squeeze" sensors that HTC and the pixel 2's have
Holy shit that smart rotate that keeps it in portrait mode is really cool
only reason I'd consider this phone
Waiting for xda to port this
wont work if pressure senstivity isnt there in ur phn..
lol but honor 10 has something similiar too, it tracks your face. you dont need some gimmicky pressure crap
Raul Slandgkearth Gonzalez Guzman but it uses camera doesn't it? I think this grip sensor consume less battery life than a camera
Who came here from Cold Fusion to see this phone? 😅 HTC has a special place in my heart as well.
Same :) Came here from the Cold Fusion page :)
Literally bro 😂
Me.
Me too
The sad part is that the haptic touch feature which is much criticized in this video was apparently a software issue and was subsequently fixed. HTC U12+ owners can probably confirm this. If this is true, U12+ may have lost out purely due to a software issue despite launching a world class phone.
''I probably wouldn't put a case or skin on it'' *dbrand intensifies*
Coming back to this video after taking the risk buying one four months ago, and the U12+ has turned out excellent after some, er, "adjustments". They fixed the buttons and made the haptic response sharper, and it actually feels "cool" now with no delay. I can hand the phone to anyone, including children, and the buttons just work and they don't even ask about them. Battery life was not good out of the box, but they apparently changed something. I now leave work with the phone around 70%, and I'm a lunchtime RUclips junkie.
The dual front cameras are for more than Bokeh. The cameras are used to create a 3 dimensional depth map of your face, and it works well enough that I use it for 80% of my unlocks, and 20% for the FP reader when it's inconvenient to point the phone at my face.
The main camera is nice and fast and does very well. We are mostly an iPhone family and own the 6, 7, 8 Plus, and XS Max (my poor wallet!). The only iPhone we have that can hold a candle to the U12+ is the XS Max. The others are hopelessly outclassed, and my son who is a professional photographer gave up doing comparisons with his 8 Plus. The U12 is that good. I got a shock last night playing with the U12+ camera, and got photos that could rival Google's night sight, bit you have to use pro mode and know what you are doing.
Performance is a plus to the plus. HTC is pretty good at tuning, but I did not expect the 845 in the U12 to be faster than the 855 in the S10. Not benchmarks, but real world use. It's not a shock though, because the U11 was faster than the S9. It's not a deal breaker by any means for someone that wants the S10, but I thought it was interesting. Gaming is one area that the U12+ stands out, and I have a girl that shows up just about every day for phone gaming sessions (which is beginning to annoy my wife!), and her iPhone overheats doing the same thing that the U12 handles with ease. Three times this month she had to let the phone cool down after doing Riptide GP2 or Leo's Fortune.
Oh, forgot to mention sound! USonic earbuds. I'm a recording engineer, and I live with knowing some details and nuances in my work will probably go unnoticed by the general public. Normal headphones cannot reproduce the sound you get standing at a million dollar console in a commercial recording studio. HTC's USonic is the only thing I've heard that can come close, and it was a complete mind job for someone with my experience. The clarity, spatial imaging, crazy bass extension to frequencies that seem impossible. It will take you a week or so to get over the mind bending capabilities of USonic, and probably two weeks to get out of the habit of touching tables and walls to see if they are vibrating to the music.
That's great to know. Thanks for the update. I have a U11.
You're the goat for this comment
@@1k_vonte I will probably buy a U12 in the future. So underrated. Awesome camera's and the audio is simply the best on any phone I believe
Wow. This isaperspective that no one is able to give me on youtube I guess. Thank you for that! Much appretiated
@@Vlado5891 Your Welcome. Great to see HTC have a new boss and should be making a new flagship next year. They are so underrated
Lack of buttons, Dual Cameras, translucent back, HTC has always been ahead of it's time. Looking forward to see HTC returning to the flagship game! :(
i dont think it ever will sadly:(
Lol @ lack of buttons being a feature
This comment didnt age so well
Watching this in May 2020.
Really hope HTC get back into the smartphone game. Something like a modern One M7 would be great.
HTC is doing Okay in the VR field. Won't back to the smartphone business any time soon.
@@kittyflier8338 they might be coming back in Q3 or Q4
@@caleb428 Don't think so... It's been a hard year even for cellphone giants like Samsung or Huawei due to the pandemic.
@@kittyflier8338 well I guess we'll see, I'm hoping they do because the more competition the better
@@caleb428 Sure it is. But the competition might be too much in recent years. Lots of mobile phone companies are bleeding out.
I feel like the digital buttons can, and will be fixed with a software update, as with most new "innovations" (I put this in quotes because it's entirely subjective) HTC has made a killer phone in the U12+
However, they priced it as if they're a big player in the market still, which is what will likely hurt it's sales.
Just look how polished the edge sense on the U11 was, the buttonless tech here is the same, it could totally be fixed, I can't wait for my pre-ordered unit to get to me
Its $799, not $849 that's only for the 128 Gb blue model, which Marques fails to mention.
And the lack of a headphone jack took this off of my list for consideration.
David hunsinger the delay not a software issue, it’s hardware, same with the feeling of it, the tapir engine is just simply not as advanced, that can be fixed withsoftware
David hunsinger I really hope the button well(lack there of) situation gets fixed because it's kinda important for the power and volume to be useable
I really thought you forgot Marques. Thanks

Fallen monk Urouge its been a while
What r u upto..?
Chilling in skypia..?
Fallen monk Urouge I heard you died. O.O
I really feel that HTC are always so close yet just too far
For real, and the fact that it’s over 800$ and doesn’t have wireless charging is really off... like seriously?
Who tf needs wireless charging... It damages the battery far worse than their normal aging and it is not even that fast yet.
Why people care so much about wireless charging? Even we know that is not "real wireless", you still have to attach your phone to the charger.
So truuu
Wireless charger is not a deal breaker for most people
back here for hTC U12+. people will love Squeeze feature when apple use it, trust me. hTC is always ahead its time. kind of sad in a economic world.
yeah but apple would probably make it useful and more responsive.
??what are you talking about?? is it super responsive already. and basically you can set it up to do what ever you want with it ??apple will probably only allow it to take picture and call Siri. if it get more responsive it will definitely be worst.
Justin Wu I'm talking about these half bake features that apple would probably steal in the future.
LMFAO another braindead apple fanboy
lol ok?
I remember when HTC were quietly brilliant now they're just quiet. Sad times
I remember when I never knew you.
Yeah HTC and LG have really fallen
Dwayne3007 what's to hate?
Blackman Whitesuit this is a beautiful phone. Not sure why htc isn't on all carriers and in stores though....
Dwayne3007 oneplus is the new HTC :)
This phone really pushes my buttons.
Oooh, *kinky*
FutureNow Not if you are a HTC U12+. Be a HTC U12+.
FutureNow now fly away
If only it had any so you could push them back
I had the first two HTC One phones, and the main thing that did push my buttons was the terrible camera.
That back cover is LITTTT
For me htc always be the most innovative smartphone. Depth sensor, stereo speakers (beats audio before apple bought it), great software and hardware, build quality and attention to detail are the best. There's only one problem with them and that would be marketing strategy
And after sale service.
Buttonless = better water resistance and no wear and tear so u wont replace button after time.
Good job HTC & waiting to update software for buttons to be much effective
yea, plus it takes some getting used to and these guys reviewing the U12+ haven't even used it enough, yet they give it bad marks...not really fair. Same thing happened when Edge Sense came out...they all said it's a gimmick, except now they are changing their tune...especially since the Pixel is using it as well on it's second device now.
Since I assume this is a sealed unit, your battery will probably die way before you'd start getting button issues on the normal smartphone.
Sybrand Botes i bought the phone buttons is awsome really feel somthing good not like what been said
I really like the front-panel design, the thin bezels, dual speakers and HTC sense.
The red camera footage is always so good!
Tech Balloon it better be, it's at least 50k I think? It's unreal that marquees has come so far and is now using 8k to downscale to 4k yikes! Lmao
WickedRaGaming I didn't realize how much 8k was until I saw how much bigger it was than 1080p! He could literally sit 100 feet back from the camera and it would still look amazing 😂
Once upon a time,
Home button is weak.
It then replaced by the virtual ones.
The stronger, virtual home button together with the Taptic Engine and fake speaker grill, killed the headphone jack.
Then,
The screen grew larger and stronger.
The home button gets killed by the screen.
Taptic Engine and fake speaker grill survived.
Headphone jack still hasn’t been revived.
To be continued...
I am 100% sure that Apple is putting those ‘buttons’ on future iPhones. It makes total sense: better water resistance, no mechanical parts (like Apple hates) and with the haptic feedback from the Taptic Engine they could feel like actual buttons.

No physical buttons is a nice idea to iterate on
I see it as nice for one specific reason - ingress protection. If next year I can get a phone that's super resistant to water and other stuff I wouldn't want inside of it, thanks to stuff like non-tactile buttons, I'd be very interested.
I still think physical buttons are the best. still rock my s7 edge with home button and the back button I really hate having them in the middle of the screen :D sadly they are taking everything and putting on the screen :S
Damn Kaysha, you're into tech?
I'm not a fan. I like proper clicky, tactile buttons.

Karan Reddy Wrong, HTC made pixel 2 But LG made pixel 2 XL, that's why it had display issue
TechVidz How is it dead
HTC IS DEAD
HTC ussually makes some significant upgrades to their phones in the 1st round of updates after being released (experienced this with my M8 & HTC 10) so hopefully that can fix the battery life and button quirks. Otherwise it's almost exactly what I'd expect from the company in 2018
Millerbros3 I can vouch for this
there are other videos that prove the battery life to be good(4 hours of sot in games and yt ate only 50%). May be it's not calibrated. So, you should drain it to 0 and charge to 100 to improve it.
Millerbros3 I think the SD 845 isn't great for battery life, seems most phones this year with that processor have average battery life.
The best thing is the screen rotation feature
Every phone should have that
RandomHexagon what happens?
Rumle Kjaer watch the video
Rotation lock is built into Android P which negates the need for fancy hardware to achieve the same. Like in this phone...
Was once the proud owner of Htc One, resurfaced again to check what the company's been up to over the years and ended up here. Thanks for the review, HTC still has a few good tricks up its sleeve.
So how do you hard reboot??
Open up the back and take the battery out
...OH WAIT.
Just hold the pressure sensitive power button/area I assume.
Akash Gupta watch the video again, he mentions that long pressing of those buttons does not work.

Hey Marques thanks for the theme and wallpapers it looks Dope.
Hey uses an app called backdrops for wallparers
Production quality is and has been absolutely insane!
auto-rotate dependent on grip feature, great camera, audio game is on point, 3D audio recording is best in the game, edge sense being a very useful not gimmicky feature, no notch (my opinion), Sense is very smooth and close to stock which I like, and software can fix most issues you mentioned.
Also easily rootable!

LegoStudios sorry to tell you dude. Pixel 3 has a notch and a glass back, otherwise looks same as Pixel2. So it's this or the S9, unless you use the 'hide the notch feature'
This? Over the great S9? Please man...
LegoStudios I can't stand them too, still got op6 though and ability to hide it is freaking awesome, love the phone, without that feature it would be a painful experience.

Jon Snow the 3xl has a notch the normal is a similar design to the 2xl
4 years of HTC One m8 + 3 years of HTC U11 = 7 years of zero problems not even a frozen screen or performance decrease and my U11 still performs excellent like 2020 phones with excellent speakers/call quality
HTC already introduced most of the Innovative features years ago; like Dual cameras, front stereo speakers, Metallic body, ultra pixel camera and so on.. Now also came up with semi transparent back, edge sense, capacitive buttons and u sonic headphones but most people won’t be able to know about those. I agree it’s all HTC’s fault as they don’t spend money on advertisement.
If you want to sell it, just tell it.

This should have been released a little earlier and priced lower than what it is. Such a misses opportunity. But I'm still tempted to buy this phone 😅
Marques is wrong (as per usual with htc reviews) the price is $799 not $849.
@Zac Kirstein he's not wrong he's talking about 128gb version which this day and age should be standard. Dunno why they released 64gb only to save $50.
Yeah, but he should have clarified that as most people will interpret that as the base price.

I've been HTC loyal for, god, I don't want to even admit how many years. I've been rocking the M9 for far too long, and the screen finally cracked on me about a month ago (not that thats stopped it in the slightest). but my love for HTC does not have me jaded, I see this company's downfalls, and I'm afraid if I buy a 1000 phone, and they go bankrupt, I'll be up shits creek on ever getting a warranty or an update. my biggest love is HTCs on board music app. the google music app that's on all androids today is shit. I just want an app that opens my music library. I don't want adverts or stations or have to go through five downbars just to get to my library. I just want it to automatically open my library. that's it. the end.
can anyone comment on what the on board music app is? is it the google music?
also, the edge sense seems to be a huge selling feature to me. and the cameras and speakers. I was actually considering the pixel2xl until I saw your review on the photo looking over exposed to other people. yikes. definitely do not want that...
I'm not looking for anything radical here, and I couldn't give a damn about the price. what's an additional $200 if it's a great phone and fits my needs? (I'll gladly pay a little more for nice underwear, on brand cereal, and a good phone. it's just one of those things.)
I just want a reviewer to get down to specifics. what widgets are available? what apps come on the phone? things like that. what are the biggest glitches? will there be good phone cases available since it uses edge sense? these are the important questions. I can read the specs. I want to know the specifics.
Try using retro music
Girl, try the "BlackPlayer", It's free of bloatware or ads bullshit, it's clean and looks great on amoled. You want a music player clean, it is clean.

Yes I would rock this phone. Very interested in the no real button theory.. software can always be tweaked or changed completely.
I'm sure if HTC doesn't fix them (they probably will) there will be a third party mod to help with the buttons
i love HTC, but the downsides for me are:
1. i dont like the idea of squeezing my phone
2. no headphone jack (i bring my headphones everywhere i go)
3. Those side "buttons" dont feel as responsive as physical buttons.
I picked up this device on ebay for parts for 30$. I fixed the device for 8$. This thing is and was an understated legend. The edge sense has the best squeeze to actuate any setting like flashlight or launch an app or even actuate actions within an app like start record on the camera app. The video and audio is magical. Great device. This phone is better than anything thats out today. This phone is just top notch.

Maybe the reason for average battery life are those pressure sensitive buttons, always on right? Idk how that works.
Gadgets Discover LCD screens take up a lot of power, n that resolution is greater too
It might be the SD845 itself, because not one phone that has it gained battery over its predecessors
idh0530 that's so wrong. I just got the MI Mix 2S and it has an amazing battery. Has LCD screen and snapdragon 845 and I easily get 24hrs with moderate use. This is the best phone I have ever used and I probably will get the Mix 3 when it comes out. I am so damn impressed.

I think that the buttons would end up driving me nuts. I can't stand things that are either laggy or inconsistent, much less both. Why mess up with the buttons when there was no need for such things, I know manufacturers want to differentiate themselves, but making it worse doesn't sound like a good idea. The portrait mode thing is pretty cool though, but that's about that since I'm not a big see through fan in electronics anyway.

I am an Apple user, almost exclusively so, iPad Pro 2017, iMac 21.5 2017, and MacBook 2017. The only non-Apple product I have is my phone, I didn’t get an iPhone because I feel that its camera is lacking which compared to its Android competitors. I am disclosing this ahead, because I don’t want be accused of being anti-Apple, I actually prefer Apple to Google and Microsoft. Also, I have been watching your videos since 2014, but now I am having serious reservations about your objectivity in your videos lately. You seem to have biases towards certain brands, and to brush others aside.
The iPhone has a better camera, than the s9, P20, G7, and HTC? This is simply untrue. The iPhone can shoot decent photos in good light, but colors are not accurate at all. So much so that a skilled eye can tell iPhone 8/X apart from others just by looking at the colors/white balance. To be fair, this is common with other phone makers as well, but low light performance is also much lower than the Pixel S series, the Samsung S9 series, and the P20 series. In lower lights, the iPhone falls flat against the S9, and even $500-600 phones such as the OnePlus 6, and P20. Not everyone takes photos in perfect light...
You seem like an intelligent person, and you have access to some of the latest technology, but I can’t help to to feel that you have biases towards certain companies. Its unfortunate, because you are one of the biggest tech reviewers on RUclips. Thousands of people will follow your advice and its the consumer who suffers. I am not alone in this opinion, look through the comments and you will see plenty of other people to feel the same way. I hope my fellow RUclipsrs are intelligent enough, not to use MKBHD as their only source in their purchase decisions, but at various sources to make their decision.
Pishi A I agree with you, we need more people like you to speak about the biases reviewers have (-:
As an htc fan since 2012 and a guy who watch mkbhd video since 2013 i agree, its all about the money sponsors etc.
Everyone has his own personal likes and dislikes and there is nothing wrong in expressing that. You don't need to like everything Marques likes or hate everything he hates. Bias is wrong only when you praise something only for money. Otherwise, liking or disliking something personally is okay.

You're not gonna get burned screen after less then year like my pixel does
except if you're using LG phones
Alvin Lukas
Samsung screen have burns too. My Note5 and S6 both have boxes burned on the screen, not noticeable though.
Andrew Gright nvr liked amoled colors
this is the best smartphone of 2018!👍💪
00:56 love the spike lee levitating shot sequence...
Very smart sense features by htc good job. Great different things from other manufacturers. Learn something one plus don't just copy others
*No buttons?*
Welcome to the future, my friend.
Good review, Marques.
Would you consider a follow-up review?
I don't know if you had done this or not. However word around online forums now that the phone is arriving to consumers has some insight.
The button sensitivity is apparently tied to the short squeeze. Some users are reporting that once a proper calibration of the side squeeze is done. A lot of the "lag" is gone.
Your videos are great. And by far your review of the u12 is my favorite. It seems like you actually thought thru every aspect of the phone and gave it not just a personal opinion but logic behind it. Unlike most of the other reviewers who where quick to toss the phone without much of a detailed explanation.
"Ohh damn, this one doesn't have a notch, not buying it" - Sarcasm intended
“Ohh damn, this one doesn't have a notch, not buying it” - No sarcasm in my case. “No notch” is actually another way of saying “more forehead’. The black strip above the display looks fugly and ancient to me at this point. Instead of the “notch” that cuts into the screen I see “ears” that add screen to the space this phone straight up wastes.
Who wouldn't like to get more head ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
~Yes sexually
Ah yes, a review of probably the last HTC high end flagship phone, which I currently have in my hands as well. It's still working nicely, but I'm itching for something new.
Man I miss HTC
The lack of actual hardware buttons is the dumbest gimmick they've done in a while.
finally htc has come back to maaarket
1.06 Jerry reference 😁
I just don't get why companies insist on not having a headphone jack
This is why I'm staying behind. I finally upgraded from galaxy note 4 edge due to poor battery. I replaced it with a HTC one m9. The price was right.

If apple is doing it everyone will...
I think NFT is a very healthy thought. Mental healthy management skills sets
Yes NFT is a legal commitment.
To change to no buttons, Mmm... If the logo is "APPLE",what will you say?
I thought HTC went out of business or something because I don’t see them in the stores anymore
They do vr now, second only to valve.
Do you seriously think the iPhone X has got a better camera than the S9? From your own blind test video it was crystal clear that s9 was wayy better and also beat the pixel a couple of times..!
I still got no idea why you rank the S9 third for cameras whereas Casey ranks it first!
I think when it comes to American products MKBHD somehow becomes biased.. I have watched camera comparison videos from different youtubers still galaxy tops in many areas. ie: check out Mrwhosetheboss camera comparison video
Gakwaya David Mkbhd's own blind test itself clearly shows that S9 is a way better camera for sure!!
Just because you thought S9 camera is good, doesn't mean it is great. Those blind tests are subjective and apart from white balance and colour saturation there isn't much difference between iPhone , Pixel or Galaxy phones.
Ashoor Naushad Casey ranks it first because he works with Samsung and is payed by them. In his recent videos he has clearly been using the iPhone X a lot, but still ranks Samsung phones higher.
MKBHD IS an apple sheep got paid by apple, that's why always praise their products
If only HTC could work on their sales marketing... One of the most underated smartphone manufacturer. Always ahead of their time
Absolutely right
