    • @cheetoritos

Yeah, it seems kind of like the worst of both worlds. It's not as bright and sharp as normal screens, and it isn't reflective like real e paper (in the sense that e paper doesn't give off light, you read it like normal paper with an outside light source). So you wouldn't really be able to ready anything outside, and it is still emitting light, so does cause more strain than a kindle.
I think it's kind of gimmicky.

    • @Dancyspartan

@@cheetoritosWell that the tablet wouldn't suffice for outdoor use is just speculation on your part.
but yeah - at first glance it seems very niche. maybe if you have a kid or like to watch yt vids, but also want the E-ink experience of the paper-style.

    • @NaudVanDalen
      @NaudVanDalen 9 месяцев назад +1

@@cheetoritos You'd have to crank the backlight up to 100% to be able to read outside, draining the battery. Meanwhile a Kindle probably lasts months since the screen only uses energy when it refreshes. It also doesn't use a backlight outside because it reflects sunlight and actually ends up being way brighter than normal screens, which have to compete with sunlight.

I had the chance to try this out for a month and do a video collab with TCL to talk more about the science behind eye strain and what they built with this screen. I think it's chiefly because most (if not all) anti-glare coatings reduce image sharpness and color accuracy, by design; they literally have to scatter light, and it's difficult if not impossible to scatter incoming light without also scattering some of the outgoing light from the screen.
Since every phone screen has been getting better and brighter for years, it would seem like a regression to start putting anti-glare filters on them from the factory, rather than letting the user choose whether they want that.

I'm guessing they'd considered most of the downsides you mentioned that's why it's priced relatively low at $200 and has a large battery as it would work great as a secondary device esp. for long reading, actually planning to get one or the tablet sometime.
What TCL can do is adapt the next versions to the LTPO screens that have higher nits for outdoor reading and variable refresh rate for battery savings.

The Steam Deck OLED has an option for a similar display and it looks gorgeous still. Black levels aren’t as deep due to having to scatter the light, but I’d rather see what I’m playing then readjust because I can’t see because of the glare. You mentioned that having a more premium display may help, and it does for sure. The OLED on the SD solved a lot of the issues that you have with this phone. Honestly any high end phone should have an etched screen option, it’s so clutch when there’s a lot of light near you.

"Glass is glass, and glass breaks" - JerryRigEverything (regardless of the display tech)
Since a replacement for a Samsung phone display is $400(CAD)+. I feel like at the first repair most will go back to a standard glary display (because of price), I think it's just cheaper to have devices (especially phones and tablets) like this as backup devices rather than a daily driver, since it (the faux e-ink paper display [normal SuperAMOLED/OLED/LCD display, but frosted and including a hardware based blue light filter]) at this point is somewhat new.

I have had my POCO X3 for 3 years now, and since the day I got it, I've been using Matte Screen Protectors on it, and boy oh boy is it a beautiful experience. My brother has the same phone and uses a normal Tempered Glass Protector, but if I compare our phones, mine always looks better. It's actually significantly cheaper too, than a tempered glass. it does offer almost the same protection, if not better. I have dropped my phone face-first on the ground from my hands, on my own height, A LOT of times. And it has never cracked. All in all, it's a beautiful experience. At least for me.

What do you think about wear on the matte surface? I use a matte screen protector on my tablet for note-taking, and I've noticed it feels noticeably smoother around the center than by the edge (I'm not sure how much of that is my pen or my hand though). Reflectance seems unaffected by the wear though.
I've also seen a good amount of people with matte screen protectors on their iPhone.

If yours is a plastic screen protector, then yes, it’ll wear unevenly. The TCL texture is the actual glass, so most likely more wear resistant.

I get the same effect from an ArmorSuit Anti-Glare Matte Film Screen Protector on my Galaxy S23 Ultra. I highly recommend it!
-The little bit of glare that still appears on the ArmorSuit Matte Film is the same as the phone in the video.
-The issue of brightness on the TCL 40 NXTPAPER, as guessed in the video, is solved by the better screen on the S23 Ultra, as its peak brightness is 1200 or 1750 nits, depending on your display settings.
-My S-Pen works with no issues at all too, so I'm a bit confused why that's a surprise to some. Writing on it is really smooth too. I actually prefer the matte over the actual screen or a gloss screen protector.
-What will a replacement screen cost on this phone? For comparison, the ArmorSuit Matte that I got came in a 2-pack for $12.74. So, it only costs me $6.37 each time I mess up a screen protector.
I get that the phone in the video is only $200, but their "paper display" is pretty much the same experience as getting an ArmorSuit Matte Screen Protector for any other phone. 🤷‍♂

If some company took this and gave it a 1440p, brighter screen I'd fully consider it. For normal everyday use I think this could be really good. The few times I watch video on my phone, it really doesn't have to look perfect or anything otherwise I'd be watching it on a tv or monitor. Maybe it could be annoying as a viewfinder for taking photos and video but tbh as long as it looks decent I'm really not that bothered.

    • @bren.r

Matte isn't anti glare. It simply scatters light and washes out a larger area. I've never had issues with reflections or clarity with a smartphone display in broad daylight. Contrarily, matte always has issues with clarity because the light emitted from the screen itself is scattered.
In your case, it's easy to just pick up some matte screen protectors if that's what you prefer. Going from matte to glossy on the other hand just doesn't work. Hopefully matte displays on smartphones doesn't become a trend.

Don't have an answer for you but I was wondering in a similar way if you couldn't just integrate this tech INSIDE a screen protector - for any phone. Is that a thing? I mean, you'd probably be paying a lot of money for high spec displays just to mute them down afterwards, but the more time I spend with my phone, the more I could actually see myself buying such a protector.

I immediately thought of a matte screen protector I had on my phone once. It felt *awesome*! The texture felt really nice and it made the phone much more pleasant to use.
But as a photographer I want to see the full sharpness of my shots... Which is why I run my S22 Ultra at 1440p for example. Yes, there IS a VERY noticable difference in sharpness. Linus is wrong about this.
And with the screen protector the sharpness just wasn't there anymore. So I removed it.
This screen seems to be exactly the same.
