    NOTE: Obviously feel free to leave a comment telling me and other viewers your thoughts on the video, or anything for that matter. Just remember that everything I said was MY OPINION. Opinions are inherently subjective, and are far from the truth. You are more than welcome to disagree with me. I know that I may sound arrogant, rude and even toxic in this video. I don't intend to come off as any of those things, but this was the best way I was able to organize my thoughts. I kid you not, I spent at least 3 hours straight writing the script and rewriting because I didn't wanna sound like a jerk.

If you actually teleport correctly(gotta practice on it a lot) you can teleport towards your enermie attack them and teleport away from them. I agree that his attacks dont need buffing and that the tail is fine, but because of the huge nerf to air dodging in this game giving him a weight buff wouldn't make him op. No one is asking for him to be bowser weight but being lighter than kirby is dumb

    You know, after watching all of the Mewtwo guides you have and before this video, I had the most fun with my favorite character in a long while with ultimate. It was like unlocking a whole new potential of the character that I never would have imagine. Perhaps bigger buffs would be too much. But maybe quality of life changes would be better off, nothing like giving better combos, but perhaps a few little tweaks here and there. However these patches must be meticulous of how they change. Even a few little buffs or nerfs can be huge depending of the factors. I will be heading to local tournaments soon to represent Mewtwo, let’s bring him to great heights.
    Thank you for your videos

      EDIT: it's been a while and although I haven't been hitting tournaments, the amount of people I have decimated online is so satisfying. Hell, he's become one of my best characters again. It's amazing how many flaws you can pick apart from your opponents when you're playing on the defense. Granted it's online but nonetheless it works out.

    I disagree on your feelings on Mewtwo's weight but I can see why u would like to keep him as light as he is currently, but I personally would like to see him as heavy or a little bit heavier than Zelda because it's ridiculous that Isabel, Sonic, and Kirby are all heavier than Mewtwo. Besides that, your video came off as a bit forced on the neutral stance you wanted to keep, "if u want these buff ur ok, but if u think Mewtwo needs these buff ur dumb or salty" idk, it doesn't come off as a hypocritical statement, but it just comes off as a "no offense bro". You don't have to go balls deep on a stance, but this feels like fence-sitting, just express your opinion and let the disclaimer that it's your own opinion stand on its own you don't have to account by saying "its ok if u want this" every single point.

    Ok so lets explain the argument of a character 'needing buffs'. Every character is technicaly viable in competetive play hence why mkleo kills everyone based on his raw skill, but a lot of characters need buffs. Needing a buff isnt because you simply dont exist or work without it, or because you arent top tier, its because there is a noticable gap in performance between you and top tier characters where In a truly balanced game that just doesnt exist. +70 characters is hard to balance so a lot of characters need buffs. Simple. Mewtwo needs a legit buff. Not because his canon, not because he is umplayable, but because there is gap in the characters performance and results from top tier characters thats just top big.

  • @TwilightWonderer

    In my opinion, He just needs tweaking. It’s a pain when he gets punished for spacing his tail attacks. I don’t feel like any character should be punished for spacing your moves or trying to dash away from your opponents. He doesn’t need buffs but tweaking him will make him more enjoyable in my opinion.

  • @walkerschlott4518
    @walkerschlott4518 4 года назад +6

    I agree completely, mewtwo doesn't NEED any buffs, but he could use them. One buff I would love to see is fixing his hitboxes involving his tail, not his hurtboxes, because there are a number of time where I will backair back to stage and it will just go through the opponent and they will smash attack the tail hurtbox and I get punished for the hitboxes not being fully accurate.

    The only problem I have with Mewtwo is the tail hurtbox. Even though I know I wouldnt have that much tail clipping moments if my movement was better, I still feel I'm being robbed when people kill me by attacking the tail even though I'm behind them (*coughcough*IC FSmash*coughcough)
    Maybe reducing it a bit in order to not erase it entirely, but in this state I feel like the tail is a true burden that don't need to be that big

    I've mained Mewtwo since he came out in Smash 4. I never really got into the competitive scene that hard, but I've dabbled some in Ultimate. Made it into elite smash a few times over the past year or so, but I also drift in and out of actually playing Smash. And I got to say, it's refreshing to see someone really amping up the value of Mewtwo's current stats. I love playing him. I love basically everything about him. I started watching your videos just a few days ago, and I was excited that I learned some new things about my favorite pokemon. I certainly felt salty from time to time when something about Metwo's kit betrayed me - I'm looking at you, back air sharking into a Ganondorf spike at ledge - but I have never felt more fun with this game than when I'm in a difficult match against a player or character I've rarely faced!
    Okay, but he needs just one buff. One teensy, weensy... Nah, I'm kidding. I'm kidding! But if I had a dream buff, it would be to make Nair tink or wing against a few more options. Of course, this is because of my own predictable play pattern. I attempt to Nair into too much. I got used to beating out many of the moves of my friends with Nair, and so I'm always shocked when I try it into a palutena up air or especially a pikachu nair. Obviously, with practice and skill it's still possible to get around those options, and I guess I should really stop trying to beat Link's up air with my down air and nair... All in all, I can't think of a single reason I'd stop maining Mewtwo, our flaws and all - even after multiple teleport-bounce suicides...

  • @ZGamingGuy
    @ZGamingGuy 4 года назад +6

    I don't think his Nair really needs buffed, but I wish the hotboxes matched what's actually happening. It feels like it never wins against moves that do similar things. Like Pikachu's Nair. And while I actually have lost 2 games before due to his tail getting hit, I'd much rather rather reliable hotboxes with it. There are times when up tilt and back air go right through people without hitting them, yet DK gets his side B to hit way beyond his actual head for an easy kill. That's pretty frustrating

    @Zaekier 4 года назад +3

    I mained mewtwo since melee and smash 4, and I still do in ultimate. The only two buffs I want would be tail hurtbox removal and the size of neutral air increased. I feel sometimes neutral air doesn't hit when it should or it seems like it, and I think increasing it just a little bit would be a nice touch. Or instead of the tail hurtbox removed, make it intangible during his attacks that use it so it's not that big of a problem anymore.
    Probably won't be happening, but they are buffs I like to think about and hope for. Still love mewtwo as is, just... I like getting treats from time to time from papa sakurai :3

    • @lukehewko260
      @lukehewko260 4 года назад

      But why wouldn't there be a tail hurtbox? That doesn't make any logical sense. The last thing this game needs is more attacks that look like they hit a character but go right through. Remember how fun it was to play Meta Knight in Smash 4, go for a down air, have your sword go straight THROUGH your opponent's body and have it not connect?

    • @Zaekier
      @Zaekier 4 года назад +3

      @@lukehewko260 thing is that Mewtwo hurtbox didn't exist in smash 4 so it's not something that never happened before. And what I'm suggesting as an alternative is when he uses it to attack that it doesn't take hits. As for Metaknight, never saw him played in smash 4 so eh, I have no response for that. As for logical sense, we could say it doesn't make any logical sense that Mewtwo is almost as light as squirtle but the same size as charizard. Or that sword characters have sweet and sour spots, or that hero has crits, when other franchises' characters don't etc.

  • @AlphaxZero28
    @AlphaxZero28 4 года назад +2

    I applaud your mentality in how you appreciate the character design of Mewtwo, accepting the characters flaws more so as its traits instead. Personally I don't like playing Mewtwo because I probably don't play defensive enough with him and just get launched KO'd easily.
    But if there was anything in this video that I could sort of relate to, it would be that I miss Link's old hookshot grab and z-air. I don't care how shitty it is, it was so fun frustrating people with that grab range, so that might be the reason why I don't completely main link anymore, despite his overall positive changes. Sometimes, it's more important to look at what you enjoy about the character, not how good the character is.

    Thank you for making this video. I had initially written off Mewtwo after trying to make him work for about 6 months before just dropping him. Your videos on him have completely reinvigorated my desire to play him and I am actually using him as a very viable counterpick character (and hidden threat in squad strike). While I do think he is and probably always will be held back by his awful disadvantage, I do agree that he is at least somewhat viable because of his insane advantage and I'm so grateful you shed light on this topic. Really love this video NotBae, and I hope it helped other Mewtwo mains who follow and watch you. Myself include too.
    I know and remember the feeling well of playing Mewtwo in Melee, Smash 4 and Ultimate. Each Mewtwo was different but also the same (I hope that makes sense) And I LOVE the challenge I get from playing Mewtwo. The same goes with Terry, a character who is REALLY bad off stage. But because of the combination of me being a Terry main and a Mewtwo secondary, I pretty much have a creative view on how to use a character.
    I won't lie, I use to complain about Mewtwo's tail as well, but we also have replays for a reason and looking back at them, Mewtwo's tail was hardly the problem of most of my loses. I even went back to play Mewtwo more after the help of the tips in your videos and I've gotten a better idea of how to use Mewtwo in battles. The problem is people are trying to force the poor Pokemon to a title like Joker or Hero. But these characters got where they were from what other players got cause they took the time to learn that character. After playing Mewtwo again tho, I also agree he is perfectly fine the way he is, I actually think the tail hurt box is a good thing because back in Smash 4 I got away with a lot of stocks just because of that tail and I got lazy as well as careless. Now I can't get away with stuff like that and I actually have to work to get that Back air or Up air KO.
    People complain about his combo game and Neutral Air?! That Nair is way too good for its own good! This has to be coming from those who get hit with fast or disjointed Nairs like Yoshi's Nair or Lucina's Nair. Mewtwo's Nair is amazing, I've even gotten random trips from it, idk how but it's happened XD And Mewtwo has (you've said this so many times) one of the best combo punish games in the game. (This is why Terry and Mewtwo are my best characters, I love characters that have a good punish game) The main thing that bugs me? Tiers, Tier lists, you know the drill. To me (I know this is sounding corny but...) I don't believe in a the Tier list. Letting a Tier list decide who you main honestly holds back your potential to try knew things, even with a low tier character! A low tier can beat a high tier, it more so depends on the players. I won't toss it out the door completely as it's a good way of discovering what strengths and weaknesses your character has and what you can do to work around them.
    Ex: I've camped Samus, Snake, Link and Byleth as Terry. A character who's 'suppose to be up close and rush down'. This is far from it, and the same goes with Mewtwo. I agree you can be aggressive if you know what your doing but Terry and Mewtwo are more defensive/creative characters at best. And even when I lose won't deter me from playing Terry and Mewtwo as I love these two a great deal.
    I mainly think most of this comes from loosing to the DLC cast that has joined as well as being punished for dodging too much (So glad they took away the air dodge spam. We did NOT did all that) buffering is also not that bad, in fact it can also work in your favor too.
    As far as buffs go? Mewtwo is fine, I was one of many mains who whined about his tail (Yes I openly admit I am one of those who asked if we could get a smaller tail hurt box) but I've actually turned it around and see it as an actual good thing (I've said this before but I'm gonna repeat it anyway. I've type quite a bit here XD) The large hurt box makes me think more carefully when to back air and can't really get away with certain tilts. If Mewtwo's tail could do stuff that Yoshi's tail could do? Yeah he'd be beyond busted.
    To end this all off, I feel Mewtwo is great but I won't let tiers decide who I main. I've decided to solo main Terry but Mewtwo will always be my secondary choice. Mewtwo's combo and punish game are amazing. Confusion beats shield, his throws are great and has Disable to stun? Yeah, Mewtwo is amazing as he is. I won't go and sugar coat everything tho, Mewtwo does have a sum of flaws that make him tough to learn but that's what makes him fun. Anywho, I apologize for the mass wall of text of a comment I'm having you read XD I was just so shocked because I thought I was only going to hear about his tail. But I couldn't have been more wrong and I find that hilarious XD This does make me want to put even more work into Mewtwo, bring on the next patch and Mewtwo will always be one of my many go tos (Lol people find it odd that I main Terry and have Mewtwo as a hidden secondary. But truth is, they both aren't too different. Like I said, I love characters with an amazing combo punish game. Terry and Mewtwo have both, Mewtwo is just floaty and better in the air while Terry is heavy and is a bit more grounded but he can still work in the air with practice.) I'm excited to see more stuff from you NotBae!
    I'm REALLY sorry for my wall of text X'D

    As fun as Smash 4 nair was, it definitely doesn't need to be buffed back to that monster (nor does it need a consistent launch angle, people really be asking for Palu nair with Mewtwo fair like it won't be a disaster), but I would love for it to connect properly - in Ultimate, the foot hitboxes rightfully use the autolink angle, but the hand hitboxes still send towards Mewtwo like in Smash 4, and due to higher base knockback and the balloon physics, very often will the opponent simply fly out behind Mewtwo in the middle of nair, even if he's perfectly still, which could easily be rectified by just using the autolink angle on every hitbox. It's an adaptable issue like any other, but I believe that having a multi-hit always connect is a sort of inalienable right for every character, like a functioning jab (I don't care if you have a good jab-pivot grab, Samus, it's still a disappointment).

    Mewtwo is straight up one of the scariest characters to buff because it gets so much reward for its killpower, mobility, combos, a top 15 projectile, & numerous ways to threaten a shield. However, it could may be get the following examples below as possible changes/tweaks.
    1. Up Smash - More displacement on the first hit (possibly with a windbox) to improve its OoS possibilities. M2's OoS is underwhelming, making this better benefits it greatly to deter reckless shield harassment & make it's big hurtbox harder to exploit on defense.
    2. Teleport - Make teleport cancelling easier. Definitely a fan of Teleport cancelling here because it's locked behind proper spacing & that is a measure of time put into the character.
    3. Hurtbox nearest the tip of the tail is removed. The hurtbox is still an exploit, but M2 gets rewarded for properly spacing by reducing the frequency of trades. I'd counter this buff by reverting M2's weight back to 77 units.
    4. F-tilt - Active for frames 10-13 & the sweetspot of the move is simply the tip & mid section of the tail. A spacing move that rewards proper positioning with killpower. Make the base of the move not kill though to keep it in check. 2 additional active frames granted to give the move more utility.
    5. Dair - Make the sourspot a weaker spike. This would make the angle match the animation.
    I'd say that's about it. Anyone, feel free to share your thoughts.

    Also down throw as a combo throw would be nice but I agree not necessary. It definitely has its uses. Even on FD, I’ll opt for dthrow sometimes just to see how they react out of it. Eventually I can get a fair or up smash out of it for the kill. Down throw on battlefield into up smash is amazing though. Even a tech in place will tend to get hit by it because it’s so active.

    been a m2 main since ultimate's release, and the only thing I'm upset with is his down throw angle. It's SO close to being a combo throw and at the moment is only good for DI mixups and platform tech chases. I don't even want it to be a combo throw, but most people that don't know the matchup think it is and I get so many people in tourneys saying "you should've down throw RAR bair" and everytime I tell them d-throw doesn't have that utility they say "then optimise it."

    Coming from a guy who recently dropped Mewtwo (I tried to main too many characters). He’s a solid character, he needs slight fixes to his teleport so it’s easier to edge cancel (much like Palu) and he needs a weight buff. Anything else would probably break him except maybe a tail hurtbox reduction.

  • @mx4159
    @mx4159 4 года назад +6

    Mewtwo definitely has the *potential* to be a high tier or even top tier with his kit, but his tail hurtbox is really holding him back imo.
    It’s unreasonable for a character as light as he is to have a hurtbox as large as a super heavyweight, and in some cases even larger. Some argue that it makes sense for his tail to have a hurtbox due to logical reasons, but then there are characters like Charizard and Ridley who don’t have a tail hurtbox, AND they’re much heavier than Mewtwo. And if one wants to argue logic, you could argue that Mewtwo should be heavier, since he’s canonically like 270 pounds or something.
    Again, I think Mewtwo has the tools he needs to become a high tier. But the things I mentioned I feel really hold him back. I’ll always main him and he’ll always be my favorite character in this game, but I’ll always make the argument that in order for him to actually become a high tier, these changes are the easiest to implement without making his other attributes too powerful.

    I agree with pretty much everything in this video, but one thing didn't sit right with me. I think it's perfectly reasonable wanting your favourite character in Smash to be buffed to a reasonable state. I loved playing as Ganondorf in Smash 4 because he's the freakin' Dorf, but that didn't stop me wanting some buffs to make him less of a joke. That being said, I think Mewtwo is just fine as he is. I think down throw combos would make him boring. I remember back in Smash 4 when they wanted to give him down throw combos, but then he'd be just like diddy with a "hoo hah" combo.
    That's what I love about Mewtwo's gameplay. He hasn't really got a heavily focused game plan around one, single thing. He can combo off a variety of things, instead of looking for a grab over and over. I think that's why I could never play as a character like Diddy or DK back in Smash 4. Their whole game plan revolved around getting the grab over and over until a K.O.
    If I was to buff something, it'd be something to do with his tail hurtbox, but that's it.

    Oh, notbae, if you see this I would like to go into mewtwo’s under used teleport chases. I noticed that like most mewtwo mains, the teleport is mostly used as a tech or recovery technique and is not used as a aggressive movement tech very often. Have you seen what I’m referring to? I personally have only recently begun looking into this technique and I would like to hear your thoughts.

    • @iamahumanlikeu9879
      @iamahumanlikeu9879 3 года назад

      Also, I understand that in several cases using the teleport during a chase can have repercussions, however I do believe if executed right, it can be used as an aggressive instant movement in a tech chase to throw off opponents and also to possibly lead into new openings for combos, particularly in the battlefield stages and other states with platform tech. As you don’t necessarily have to teleport to the ground and have the ability in certain scenario to utilize the teleport to move to a platform in a specific location or double teleport and maneuver to another location in much more sharp and clean movements leaving room for specific follow ups and techs. I have rarely seen this explored as a possible way to utilize his teleportation and would like commentary as commentary has proven beneficial to gaining insight on things.

  • @iamahumanlikeu9879
    @iamahumanlikeu9879 3 года назад

    I am a mewtwo main myself and a lot of what he says I agree with. The thing is that people too often downplay characters or over emphasize the strength of others. The fact of the matter is that Nintendo designed each character to be playable and it’s just a matter of figuring out how to best utilize what is offered. Now I do think some characters have a chance of being better than others, but like he pointed out with some characters before, opinions change and characters are not set in stone to each tier. as he says about his opinions, it’s my opinion take it or leave it but right now a lot of characters are put in tier groups based off of personal skill rather than actual statistics. Although certain characters may actually be better than others, it’s too early to actually know that about most of the characters. Weather or not a true best character exists is unknown but perhaps certain aspects of tier characters are. Then again a lot of things can change and I believe it’s too early to be adjusting characters for the most part. Thank you for your input Notbae, your thoughts and your gameplay skills are really helpful and inspiring to many of us.

    I play Mewtwo and Joker.
    My short story experience with *Mewtwo:*
    Mewtwo was my first main. He was very fun for me to play and I still play him a lot, just not as much as Joker. Despite his weight, there would be times to where my Mewtwo survived until around 200. His tail hurtbox isn’t a big problem for me. Using confusion into shadow ball is a cool thing to do, same with confusion into disable. Now I know the 2nd one doesn’t sound right, but it kinda is. I use it to get a little space from those people who always try to get in close. His nair can be used for drag downs, and can be followed by an ftilt, and I’ve used this a lot. Many players I’ve come across can’t get around it. Mewtwo is very fun and I love playing him a lot!
    My short story experience with *Joker:*
    I was SICK of Joker players saying “i CaNt GeT kIlLs WiThOuT aRsEnE!” But honestly, I understand them. Im a good Joker player, and when I get Arsene, it’s just easier to play. Especially when fighting annoying characters. A while ago I fought a grabby Samus and Wario, and I only got away from them with Arsene. Arsene is not only a stand, but can be used for escape options and distance attacks. Egeon and the longer range gun...not the best...but...shut up. I understand why Joker and Arsene got nerfed. I never noticed, and by the time I did, it was 8 months ago he was nerfed and I never noticed. It was obvious too, Arsene goes away with less hits and gun is smaller. I’m very observant with the character attacks and small details that really count, but this? This I somehow didn’t notice. Joker one up-ing Mewtwo in a drag down doesn’t make a difference to me. It might to others, but not me. I try to form habits with Mewtwo that Joker can handle and carry over. Sounds stupid? Yes. Does it matter? No.

    Even if we don't like it, the tail hurtbox is a huge, HUGE problem. We already see stuff like people teleporting to bowser's sideb or other grabs, with Mewtwo it happens from much farther away, that happens to me at around 60% and I die even with optimal DI on some stages
    Also his grabs are good and functional PROVIDING YOU CAN LAND IT, for a being with psychic powers his grab range SUCKS, the amount of times I run to grab or try to grab anyone but it whiffs and the other person grabs me from the same distance is way too high

    The part about people complaining about their mains is a wonderful point that I wish so many more people had. Don't get me wrong, Mewtwo has a lot of people complaining about the tail and weight, but I feel like Marth mains are a few tiers below that. I've seen numerous tier lists from top 20 players in the world even saying things like "This is just a worse version of Lucina." This influences people to never try Marth, and can really bring down people who main him.
    It's almost as if people, top players included, don't learn. Before Void started taking Sheik seriously, people were placing her in the lowest tiers. She was buffed a few times, but even then, most people said that they wouldn't change anything significant. Now, I see her in high tier occasionally. Your example with GnW is another good example of this. Maybe I'm missing something, but I think that tier lists are supposed to represent how good a character can be, divided into different tiers to show which characters are closest to each other.
    I guess my main problem is that people tend to place characters based on a mixture of results (which doesn't make as much sense as we may think it does) and how they felt the character was after playing a few games with them. If you don't have high level experience fighting someone who mains the character, how can you judge how good they really are? And, of course, I don't have that experience either, so I'm in no position to make a tier list (except for fun.) However, I don't think it takes a genius to tell you that Mewtwo hits REALLY hard but dies early (glass cannon?), or that if Sheik did 45% or more off of her combos then she would be overpowered, or that Marth gets a lot of milage off of his sour spots and they actually lead to more damage via combos. If you buff something in the way that most people want it, these characters would become overwhelming. Balance is a delicate thing.
