I remember as a kid looking up gamefaqs for the last 2 characters to unlock in melee, i was a huge Mewtwo fan from all the Pokemon games and it blew my mind he was a playable character. I used Mewtwo every time i played and thought he was the greatest thing since air. Learning about his tier list spot always bothered me because Mewtwo the most powerful Pokemon couldn't hang in a fighting game. When he got cut in brawl i was upset because he was so unique in his moveset and still such a badass presence on screen. Nowadays when you see a pro level smash player use Mewtwo i always have hope that someday someone will take the character to new heights. Mewtwo has some of the most broken moves, but to counter his power, they had to make him easy to kill. Ill always thank sakurai for putting in the greatest pokemon to ever exist in his game.
@@bigtoblerone8446 it's purely because he floats while rob slows down, then slowly rises while increasing speed like you'd exoect from a rocket propelled thing. Lore wise he should but just like sephiroth they made em light cuz a heavy char movin like that would be busted (least that's what they think, idk enough to say)
And for some reason Charizard's tail hurtbox is by far not as big as Mewtwo's. Imagine how awful Char would be if he had the same issue as Mewtwo has. They really messed up that character.
Pikachu and Pichu have very small tails and so they do not increase their hit box by much, Mewtwo has a very long tail just as big as his body which basically just means you have a second mewtwo hit box that you are just flinging around all the time.
They really should've given him invinciblity on his tail during moves like fTilt and bAir. You could argue that the tail having a hurt box balances the range (a la SF2 Dhalsim) but other characters just *get* those tools with no drawbacks.
mewtwo was my main in smash 4 and the tail thing is like the entire reason I'm having a character crisis in Ultimate lol. Took away a very important aspect of his design (keeping danger away with disjointed attacks) and did nothing of actual value to compensate for that. Now he suffers from Heavy Syndrome where they kept buffing stuff that was already strong and made his comeback factor obnoxious but didn't even try to boost his absurd set of crippling weaknesses
That tail hurtbox is pain incarnate, but I still try my best to main Mewtwo just because he’s one of the few characters I can play so much and never get bored with.
I wouldn't call me rolling from ledge and having the f smash Mario was charging to hit my neutral getup end up hitting my tail tip and me dying at like 60% fortunate. you can argue balance all you want but mewtwo specifically was reliant on his tail as a defense because he's a huge glass cannon while also being a massive target in the air in an aerial focused game. also charizard and Ridley don't have this issue and they are in fact not vulnerable glass cannons. bruh even Sora's shoes are intangible. my hypothesis is that smash balance is heavily biased toward Japanese competition (the balance team was advised by a couple japanese pro players) and they were salty they lost to Abadongo so much so they ruined his character
Yeah and with the final - or so update, they decide not to fix important shit like that, and instead take away the best part of Ganon’s side B, which is winning against an opponent with the same amount of lives if you get them off stage with it. Such stupid decisions. They should still update the game
Charizard has a flame and Ridley has a stinger. And Pi(ka)chu's electric. Mewtwo has… a ball thing. Which should count for a weight of some sort, but alas.
Andres said something that I’ve been saying these last couple days of playing Prime 1, the elevators should be interconnected and essentially act like teleporters. Just like how Dread an SR had them! Overall I do like this game but it definitely could use some QoL which I’m sure Prime 4 will have
They should make it so the tail only has a hurtbox whenever it's an active hitbox (during a tail-based attack). Otherwise, opponent's attacks should go in front of the tail (like Steve's crafting table).
What??? No. NO. The opposite needs to happen: his tail becomes intangible when he attacks (like DK's arms do) so he can hit with disjoints and clank with swordies
@@bigtoblerone8446 Massive intangible tail is way too OP. That'd be like giving Mewtwo Cloud's sword. Alongside his teleport, projectiles, kill throw and reflector. DK needs the intangibility because otherwise he's combo food.
@@cantspellrestaraunt he's a glass cannon. any strength that he has is compensated for by how fast he dies, how big and defenseless he is and how hard he gets combod. Teleport is a trade off and can actually be less safe to recover with if the opponent can/knows how to 2 frame. Confusion isn't even a top 5 command grab and as a reflector its kind of slow and committal. Other characters have massive disjointed attacks using their body parts (Charizard, Ridley, half of Terry's moveset, etc.) and on top of that having a tail disjoint just completed his design. A versatile floaty glass cannon able to defend itself with projectiles and disjoints while also having strong offensive pressure....but it dies in like 5 hits and is close to kill percent after like a single combo. High risk character but you're rewarded with a GOOD character who is adaptable and fun and stylish. All that is gone with tail disjoints removed because that removes an entire portion of Mewtwo's gameplan and makes playing as him "feel" unsafe. Like you can't do anything without making yourself vulnerable (except shadow ball which is why every top mewtwo player's gameplay is 50% shadowball and 30% forward air). He would probably be high tier, maybe even top tier, but there's waaay stronger characters with more absurd strengths in this game
Why is he so light tho? He's literally over 250 pounds in the Pokémon games. That'd make his tail being vulnerable far less of an issue, and even so it should have some invincibility or armor. SAKURAI!!!
Fun fact: most other characters with a tail also have a hurtbox on it, but they all have only 1 or 2 hurtbox “bone” on it while Mewtwo has 3. They should have just removed that 3rd one and keep the other 2.
I dropped mewtwo entirely because of his tail. the generous hurtboxes in ultimate really frustrate when playing him, hes unplayable against matchups that matter, ala DLC.
Zero what are your thoughts on Pichu? I’m trying to get it into elite smash but I literally can’t lol I know it’s a skill issue but he feels like one of the worst characters to me

it's not really a nitpick it drastically changes the way you're able to play mewtwo and DOES ruin his viability almost singlehandedly as a unique weakness that only he suffers from for seemingly no reason. I think what discourages me from playing my old smash 4 main is having the tip of my tail being clipped and me dying for it at early percents because oops I guess I should have expected that Mario f smash aimed at my neutral getup to ALSO hit my roll getup because my tail was there. Oops I shouldnt have tried to jump because the Jigglypuff literally just rested the tip of my tail LITERALLY and then I stop playing mewtwo for the day and pick a character that doesn't stress me tf out. idk man I've straight up had the tip of my tail KO punched.
