  • Check out the wicked street battle in which I pit the Dodge Challenger RT against the Ford Mustang Ecoboost from 0-60 mph. Can the smaller and lighter Ford win the day or will the torque of the RT's V8 be too much for it to overcome?

    The slow initial tip in for the Ecoboost from a dig is turbo lag. In addition, the stock tune for the Ecoboost is very conservative. The advantage in performance goes to the R/T off the showroom floor. However, the Ecoboost is highly tunable. Change the downpipe, install a larger intercooler, and tune it, the Ecoboost becomes a high 11 second car. The total cost for these mods is only about $3,000. It will give a stock Scat Pack a good race in the quarter mile. Getting the R/T in the high 11s either requires a supercharger or ported heads, cam, exhaust, and 392 intake. The Ecoboost has far superior handling over the R/T. The sticker price for Ecoboost is about the same as a Challenger with the V6 Pentastar engine. The R/T rides better than the Ecoboost and has a far better exhaust note. The Ecoboost sounds like a fart can.

    • @justpray365
      @justpray365 3 года назад +13

      Haha. That's a perfect way to describe the sound! Fart can! Thanks, I'm using that. It could have a 1000hp and still have that sound.

    • @hu3.789
      @hu3.789 2 года назад +10

      @@BrayZap - There is no comparison when comparing the sound of a 4 cylinder with a V8. The exhaust note of an 8 cylinder is superior to 4 and 6 cylinder engines. I say that as the owner of a V6 Mustang. The only Ecoboost that sounds almost tolerable belongs to a friend of mine who added an MBRP cat back. As crappy as the stock exhaust sounds, the active exhaust is even worse. The quieter you can keep those cars the better. If I ever bought an Ecoboost, I would disconnect the fake sound that is pumped through the speakers. The second thing I would do is add resonators. Sound is a matter of taste. I think the Ecoboost Mustang sounds like sh*t and you can't convince me otherwise.

    It is great that the manufacturers are offering so many different engine combos. They pretty much have everyone covered. For me, the growl and rumble of a V8 is where it's at. But I'm old school. Having owned a Vega and a Pinto back in the day, (tough times) it's amazing what they have accomplished with a 4 cylinder.

Now I’m 3 times that age, the Ponycar is a ‘95 GTS w302, no stickers or scoops. I do wonder what that turbo stang will be doing when it has 150k on it. Thanks for the video, RacerX! I was excited to see you have this comparison. For the first time I feel like I have more experience than you! 😉
    I bought a new R/T (Auto) in late 2008 and drove it for 9 years. Then I bought a lightly used 2015 Mustang EcoBoost Premium Convertible which I'm still driving today. I can't find fault with anything you said in the video. The R/T was about a half second faster to 60 than the Mustang. I have to TRY to get wheelspin with the Mustang, I had to try NOT to with the R/T. You can do burnouts in the EcoBoost, but you have to prime the Turbos. It'll do it, but you gotta want it!
    The only thing I don't like about the Mustang is the sound. It's horrible. Made worse when the top is down and you can't help but hear it. But the cornering is amazing!
    The only complaint I ever had about my R/T was that it didn't like hot weather. That's a problem here in Alabama. It was sluggish on any 90+ degree day, but when the temp dropped below 60 you better hang on!
    Bottom line is that I miss my Challenger and I'm saving up for a Scat Pack. The Mustang is my first convertible and I wanted to scratch that itch, but now I want my HEMI back! I'm hoping the Scat Pack's extra hundred horsepower will make up for the R/T's hot weather limitations. I want that 60 degree feeling year-round!

    Great review RacerX. I've actually been curious about this lately. I've been looking at challengers lately and I was surprised at the 0 to 60 on the R/T considering the HP, but the weight has always been just to much. The proof of that is comparing it to the Ecoboost Mustang. I have a 2017 premium Mustang Ecoboost (stock) and I usually get anywhere between 6.0 and 5.4. For the price of the R/T and the HP, it should be way faster than a 4 cylinder turbo. Less than a second apart could come driver skills in a race. I'm not bias in any way, I love all cars. My other car is a convertible Z51 C6 Vette. 28hp more HP and same torque as the Challenger R/T, but the 0 to 60 is 4.0 stock. If they could only shed some weight from the challenger. I love the comparison videos!!!

    Hey Racerx.... I have a question about the interior of the Challenger especially the distance from the door armrest to the steering wheel so I saw a reviewer trying to use the armrest and he couldn't reach the steering wheel with his left hand unless he sort of leaned over and leaned into the steering wheel because the distance from the door to the driver seat is substantial have you found that an issue I'm 6 foot three by the way and the tester himself was I think 6 ft tall.... or is it something you just have to get used to with the Challenger...not using the armrest...

    I have a manual ecoboost, I have no problems hitting 5.3-5.6 consistently. If you know how to rip the gears, I think that’s the better pairing with the turbo-4. Even with traction control on, it’ll lay a patch of rubber 40 ft long and chirp tires coming in to second AND third gear. The other day, I had to punch it to get onto the expressway, and even with a 50 mph rolling start, it spun tires when I downshifted to third and dumped the clutch. If the old school dudes would give it a chance and learn how to make a turbo work for them, I think they’d LOVE the 6-speed turbo pony. But not a lot of people in MY generation can. I’m just lucky my poppop taught me how to drive in a manual.

      @Jason M. I'm 44 and run a Borla S-Type on my 5.0. Louder than stock, not so loud that it's annoying. Ford tunes their stock exhaust on the quiet side because Mustangs have such a wide fan base. I've changed the stock exhaust on all the Mustangs I've had over the years. I've heard Ecoboost Mustangs with stock exhaust, Ford Performance, Flowmaster, Magnaflow, even a Chinese made titanium exhaust. Nothing sounded good. I'd buy a new one if they offered it with the 2.7 V6 Ecoboost. I couldn't careless less where it's made. Remember the Mustang is only assembled in the United States. A lot of the parts in your Mustang come from Chinese suppliers. Don't believe me. Look it up. All that said, sound is subjective. Peace.
