2020 Ford Mustang Ecoboost vs Mustang GT: Which One is the Better Sports Car?

- A four-cylinder muscle car used to be considered blasphemous, but the Ecoboost Mustang actually has a lot going for it. Although it doesn't feel as big and mighty as the V8-powered Mustang GT, the Ecoboost version holds its own as a legitimate sports car. In this video, autoTRADER.ca's Road Test Editor Dan Ilika and Editor in Chief Jodi Lai compare the two coupes head to head to determine the pros and cons of each.

If you are weighing up your Mustang options, DON'T be swayed by fuel economy. If you drive the 4cl turbo Mustang hard (and you probably will), it's every bit as thirsty as the GT. As the former owner of a 2.3T Mustang and now owning a GT, I would say that 90% of the Mustang 'comparison' videos are misleading - not many tell you that if you cruise on the highway in the GT you can get over 35mpg. Choose the 2.3 ecoboost because you want a turbo car which is more nimble than the heavier GT and that handles twisty roads better (which it does) and really doesn't feel that much slower overall, but don't choose the Ecoboost to save on fuel - because you probably won't.
I added a phosphate casted pipe and a silver iodide pump on my gt so I get 30-35 mpg when driving hard and like 50 when driving conservatively.
Phil Hammond it needs to strike a balance. Someone has to tell how good the ecoboost is since everyone would aspire to a GT. Eventually getting a GT.
Yeah and I have modded my EcoBoost so fu3l economy is terrible
@@brolyv5802 I have a v6 2016 mustang, just turned 20 and I’m looking at the 2018 ecoboost premium and the 2018 gt base model.. 20k vs 35k where I live. I can’t really afford the GT 😅 even if I saved and sold my v6 I wouldn’t be able to afford it. Might just have to get an eco 😫 I gotta do something soon because my v6 is almost at 100k miles and I drive it really hard
@@SirenS550 i would not buy an ecoboost premium. Always buy a base car w minimal techs if you want to fight depreciation. But for the price of an ecoboost and for what you get it is good for the money. Buy warranty if buying used ecoboost
My favorite thing about the video is that it compares the two available reds 😄
Also, a 330 hp rwd sports car is nothing to sneeze at. I'd probably get the Ecoboost for the cost, mileage, and handling.
Go with the Mustang HPP engine and performance package. I think V8s will be extinct after a couple more generation updates. I have the 2015 F150 2.7L twin turbo EcoBoost. I love it.
You don't buy a 4 cylinder
Or just get a more reliable, older 5.0 like the 2011-14, and you will still average 28-30 mpg.

Thanks Blake!
GT is great if you can afford it, Ecoboost is great if you can't afford a GT. But you should get them in a manual.
No 10 speed is way faster
@@dr3nch_g0d52 But boring
You really are correct, along with stiffer suspension, I love my ecoboost but had I gotten an automatic I wouldve felt very empty missing out on the gt rumble...but a 6 speed with a performance pack has me saying "who cares for a gt..not me"
Facts. Even though I might can afford buying a gt, but going to gas station in every two days sounds like hell Lmao

Just get a base v8 at that price
@@silentsupreme4874 Too expensive to maintain and gas prices don't help 😕
I finally got to drive both versions. I own the the ecoboost mustang but decided to rent the GT. The one thing that really surprised me is how much better the ecoboost handles over the GT. The GT definitely felt kind of floaty on the road when you stepped on the gas or going around corners. The ecoboost is definitely quick off the line and the GT is definitely a bit quicker. I think if the ecoboost is modified to have the GT power it will most definitely be the superior of the two because of the handling. The GT definitely also does sound more aggressive than the ecoboost, but the ecoboost does not have a bad sound.
I personally prefer the EcoBoost.

NO! The Ecoboost HP is not an Ecoboost with a Performance Pack! It is the 2.3L from the Focus RS with some additional upgrades like GT front calibers, etc.
I own an ecoboost. 2016.
NOT RELIABLE.
Head Gasket blew at 86k. 2.6k to fix from a mechanic. Ford gave me 4k quote.
The radiator cap also welded itself to the reservoir. Needed to yank the thing out with tools to replace it.
Had to replace the lug nuts because every mechanic told me they were expanded and warping because they are a 2 peace design. Upon replacing for 20 bucks online, yes they were indeed in need of replacement.
Sun visor internal wires for the lights get torn up from repeated extending and compressing, causing an on demand lamps fuse to blow.
A/C needed to be recharged at 43k miles.
Ebrake wire was loose at 45k miles causing a dash light to appear saying ebrake activated. Easy fix.
Loud clanging/metal torquing sound from rear on stop start acceleration (repeatable every time). It was the ebrake wire hitting the calipers. Needed to be tightened. Took ford 2 weeks to fix, telling me they couldnt replicate. HORRIBLE COMMUNICATION service. Gosch ford. Had to drive it for them.
EVAP valve threw check engine light. Warrantied fix, finally some good news.
Transmission grinds and pops when cold. (Manual) Improved with trans fluid replacement. (BG Products)
On hot days, sitting in traffic causes 1st gear to be really hard to engage as well as reverse on cold. (BG Fluids Trans fluid improved this. Way better)
AND NOW AT 87k at 3200 rpm, only when decelerating under no load, there is a grinding sound coming from the clutch (bell housing). You can make the grind continuous if you engine brake at that exact RPM, the engine cannot be making power or it goes away. Its loud.
My Mechanic Loves me
But hey, The car is fun. Get the Ford Performance Power Pack 1 tune. Warrantied by ford. Whole new car. Way more fun. Mostly Highway at 70-80 and a few city miles nets me 24.5mpg.
Also, do not drive worn tires on this car. In the rain, it has no problem letting you die. Haha, car go slide. Otherwise, very controllable even if you take it for a slide in the rain because of better weight distribution. Feels way better then the 5.0 around turns.
I have a 2022 manual I haven’t had any of these mechanical issues… well not yet.
Lol though yeah… gotta go easy when it’s wet out… let’s just say I got rudely surprised the first time I drove it in the rain. Scared the shit outta me it definitely gets sideways with no questions asked under the right circumstances😂.
I am thinking about getting that tune, but I’ve also had the idea of “upgrading” to the 5.0 cross my mind, but I don’t know
The 1984-1986 SVO is my favorite Mustang of all time. It wasn’t until 2005 (fifth generation) that I would take notice again of the Mustang. When the sixth generation Mustang was revealed for 2015, I knew I had to finally buy one.
btw; Nice comparison between eco & GT

Proud owner of 3 mustangs (past and present)! Last year acquired my latest, it still makes me question the many reviews. You tested an "ecoboost" but failed to add until the end the model was 7k over regular pricing (good luck getting what you drove for that amount). Why not test the basic models and let us decide to add the mods, or test both, but be upfront about the process. You are not alone, other channels and a certain British car show never test affordable cars. But you do you.....
The simple answer as to why the vehicles we and other outlets test tend to be at or near the tops of their respective lineups is that those are the vehicles made available to us to test by the automakers themselves. We occasionally request specific trims, but that’s all they are - requests - and ultimately it’s up to the various manufacturers to decide what’s available to members of the media to test. As for the pricing, so-called “market adjustments” or dealer markups aren’t really a practice here in Canada, so no luck required getting a car for the amount it’s listed! Thanks for watching!
Its not weird to have Manual seats with no heated/ventilated seats in more expensive models for weight reduction
Lol, the entire 10 lbs?
I like the price as tested, 54K (Canadian) for the HPP vs 66K for the premium GT. If you spent comparable amounts of cash, the HPP with a bigger turbo, intercooler, race downpipe, cat back exhaust & tune, the power will be GT like for still less money, AND more fun to drive in the corners...
People arguing in the comments about the Gt and the Eco Boost when I know that the Shelby is the father of these too.🥵🔥
In my state (Queensland, Australia), there’s also registration costs to consider.
A four cylinder is about $750 a year to register yearly...a V8 is nearly $1200 a year now...
We just bought a 2.3 High Performance (the only version of the 4 that we get in Australia) Mustang with a six speed manual, and we love it. I did have a couple of guys start telling me how awesome the V8 was and that I should have spent the extra and bought one, that it was foolish to buy the four, no matter how much power it has.
I replied by saying “So tell me...what colour is YOUR Mustang...?”
Hint: the Hyundai and Nissan hatchback they both drove away in told me they couldn’t answer...😂
Thanks for sharing!
1 vette is purple the other vette is red... “So tell me...what colour is YOUR Vette...?”

I don't know if anyone actually buys these cars for fuel economy and if that is a factor, there is the MachE. For me I got the EcoBoost HPP with the 6 speed manual and all the track options because I wanted a car to take to the track. I'm going to tell you that those boys with the GT love to talk trash, but once they have gone around the track 10+ times and I'm passing them again because their brakes are faded and their temp gage is climbing... they quiet down a bit. Not saying I don't love the Mustang GT, I just have more fun on the track in my EcoBoost HPP.
only question remains is which one is better for daily driving.
Eco boost for gas mileage
Depends on the driver.
GT is like all out performance, a drivers car.
Eco is like, you just want the mustang body style, but also fuel economy and a not too fast but not slow.
If you are talking about daily drive
Get your shit
A toyota bullshit sedan
That's perfect for daily drive
I just had an ecoboost convertible as a rental. Maybe not quite as cool as the GT, but I still liked it a lot.
I ordered my Ecoboost about 2 1/2 months ago. I really had to evaluate what I was looking for. Balancing the idea of performance and what I really wanted as far as options. My build was 39k with a $1200 discount for having it custom built for what I wanted. There are options I wanted bug because of the way things were packaged the price was more than I wanted to pay. I wish they had the option to get the magnaride without getting the hpp engine.
For 39k you should have got the gt
@@StopWars420 I don’t think I should had bought the GT. I have owned the car for over a year now. I have driven both and I am extremely happy with my choice! If I would had gotten the GT I would not have had nearly the same options.
40k for a 4 cylinder Mustang is absurd.
@@steamroller72 your opinion. For an extra 15k I can get that little 4cyl to produce 800hp. A Friend of mine just did 8.895 1/4 mile in his.

That’s with all the packages lol. If you gonna spend that much might as well get a GT. Rn I’m actually thinking of getting a 2020 eco which for me will be 24,000$ or a 2015 GT which is around the same price. Idk yet tho
Most people buy mustangs for the looks not the performance. And this new mustang is a far more comfortable and luxurious commuter which pairs well with the more economical motor. Not like the eco boost is slow- it’s as fast as my 2011 SHO- it’s just not the monster that is the GT.
I get that the ecoboost is a very capable and good looking sports car.. it is a mustang after all. But just for comparisons sake... I got my decently loaded 2020 mustang gt for 37k out the door.....

Willy The whale I’m about to buy that same deal black on black with about 42k miles on it. How many miles on that one you are getting?
3:40 yeah nothing to worry about until you're stalled at a red light like my 2013 focus and you need to roll backwards in neutral into a gas station lot so you can get the module changed because programming a transmission is apparently impossible to get right the first time
I hate how manufacturers play this game of " We don't want a V6 with more power than our V8 " when it comes to sports cars. The 3.5 liter from the Ford gt makes 640 hp . Why not put that engine in the mustang? Throw the 2.3 liter away ! I hate that loud raspy engine note .
Ikr. Imagine a 10 speed v6 mustang. 😭
Absolutely love my 20 GT auto with pp1 and active exhaust. It is a beast. Even cars that should be much faster are put on notice. The only thing I would change is opt for the upgraded instruments, as it includes the drive modes. No to the heated and cooled seats. I would rather have less weight. Three options you want at very least....IMO! Get base GT, performance pack, and active exhaust. The auto is great and IMO well worth the money, But it's up to what you prefer. If you want the fastest between the two, get the auto.
How much did you pay for the car? I am interested in a Mustang, but they are so expensive now.

66 for a GT premium mustang with the performance pack is ridiculous. I got mine for 47k and that was the premium package black accent package and the act of exhaust package upgrading to the 10 speed. The performance pack for the extra six grand was not worth it for me. Plus I wanted the automatic.
The ecoboost is very quick! Super great car for having fun on the street. It accelerates 0-60 not quite as quick as the GT, but it's pretty close. The GT really excels in the 60+ (like the 60-130), because it revs higher and therefore helps the horsepower for top speed.
The ecoboost is a perfectly fast car to have in the street

Hpp is a waste imo. The only thing that the ecoboost has over the gt is the price. Get a base , with 101a so it’s still nice inside and only 1500 , then spend 4k on a mild nx2 turbo build and have 400whp for well under gt price. Unless u wanna go crazy and want a drag car
I'm a grey haired guy who always had a convertible... 'Shopping for a new Mustang conv.... For me, the Ecoboost is the choice because I don't want the temptation to do things that get you pulled over.... like the loud exhaust. The hardest part is the disappointing color choices. The paint colors are basically stupid and say ''look at me''. The interiors are so black... even with the colored seat inserts... ''work truck black''... It just looks cheap. It used to be fun to pick out a nice looking car. The reason for this is that the designers at Ford are in all likelihood twenty somethings who dye their hair black and wear all black clothes..... so the interior choices are between 2... the one you don't like and the one you don't want.
While we are on the subject.... the '74 Chevy pickups had 5 interior color choices.... pickups !!
The ecoboost has crappie exhaust notes no matter how much you upgrade the exhaust systems. I felt embarrassed to even rev the ecoboost in public because of the exhaust notes. So I bought a 2018 GT. Love every minute of my GT enjoyed it so much. Because I love going fast in a safe manner of course. Mustang is a muscle car therefore it needs to sound like one.
Thanks for sharing
It’s because no one does their research on their exhaust. They just care about the sound level not the actual tones. I’ve found that a full catless 3inch with 2 borla attack mufflers is the perfect sound for deep tone/loudness. Keep the cats for less performance/reliability/sound if you want but I’d remove it.

The mustang 2021 ecoboost stock gets 310 Horsepower and 350Lb-Torque. In my opinion, you don't really need the HPP unless you want the "upgraded brakes and suspension." I would just add a cat-back exhaust and a nice air intake cooler and that should add 20 HP. All in all, it really is about torque unless you plan on racing an ecoboost past 100mph lol
