- Thomas and James put some of the most exciting new cars head to head...most of the time. This time, it's the economy performance cars with automatic gearboxes. The 2020 Ford Mustang Ecoboost Premium ($42,275 CAD), with the largest displacement of the pack at 2.3L , goes toe to toe with the turbocharged Honda Accord 2.0T Touring ($40,405 CAD) the Subaru WRX ($35,795) and the VW GLI ($33,345) which packs the least punch of the three in terms of horsepower, but is the lightest. They all have automatic transmissions. Who will take the win, and by how much? Things don't always go as predicted. Watch to find out. Subscribe!

I can’t afford
"Afford" is a relative term. Some people feel they can afford a $20,000 car if they have $3,000 and a job that can barely cover payments, while some people feel they can afford a $20,000 once they have $20,000 plus comfort money leftover.
@@oceanwaves83 Comparing these cars with the usual cars they Track Test, these are wallet friendlier, but I guess all cars are just expensive.
I have a GLI and love it!
I’m shocked at how well the Accord did. It definitely deserves more credit.
I'm not, if you've ever been in one you'd know just how much instant torque the new Accord 2.0T makes. It's tuned very aggressively and they wanted that car to be a sleeper
10th gen accord is no joke. Sucks they don't have a coupe. :/ Oh well, not enough people would buy them for Honda to justify making them.
It's what all the old Mustang/STi racers-turned-dads are buying around here. It spanks for a 4D/FWD family hauler.
I got one of them and you're 100% on point. Sport mode + flooring it makes you go way faster than a car like that should. Funnily enough my brother got an EcoBoost and the first time I tried it I was so disappointed, I'd never trade it for my car even if you would give me a couple grand for it. He could have gotten a GT at the same dealer for the same price (38k, both 2018) and about the same miles on them but he wanted the convertible instead smh

It would be for me. But it likely has a blown head gasket…
@@Eternalsfan You won't blow a gasket if you don't do burnout all the time and don't install a backfire tune. Never had issues with mine
@@draquer666 What do you make of this? When I had that issue with my car, the engine was misfiring badly on startup. Coolant was draining the expansion tank every day. The mechanic I took my car said the spark plugs were the culprit. But the engine oil wasn’t milky colored at all. So if it wasn’t the gasket, then how could spark plugs cause coolant to drain so much? I’m baffled. I’m no mechanic. That’s why I’m asking you.
@@Eternalsfan probably a lemon. any car can throw headgaskets and in fact the FOcus RS had major recall due to head gasket failures. The mustangs never had an issue. But again, it can happen. Any car can have issues. a Headgasket replacement, if that is all you have as an issue is probably the least worrying, compared to bottom end issues. what year do you have?

Can someone tell Honda to just make a Type R Accord, it won't cost them too much...
Hopefully
It will take sales from the type R civic and those numbers are still hardly worth keeping it around.
It's not like the 90's anymore where money was abundant and automakers had freedom to do what they wanted.
So much of the company is funded by shareholders that just car about the bottom dollar that they'll look at how much money is spent in branding, advertisement and development and see how little the payoff is that they would threaten to pull back their shares.
@@tooquick240 sold enough to get another generation (already being tested) and they're still annoyingly hard to come by at MSRP... For comparison the Type R did much better in sales than the Focus RS.
Every car doesn’t need to be so fast good grief. You must be the same people who want the type r Honda Odyssey and are responsible for the existence of a 300hp camry...smh. Having a fast car doesn’t make you a car enthusiast and it’s becoming more and more clear every year.
@@mattswank okay... I drive a 165hp Subaru everyday. I love that car and wouldn't have it any other way as a daily.
My 1993 300zx is in the process of getting a vh45 swap. I've had countless other cars and trucks such as a dessert runner 1990 nissan pickup, kia forte autocross car and the list goes on. No one said cars have to be fast to be fun
What do you expect them to do with it? The 10AT already has better gearing than the FK8.
You're better off just doing an ECU reflash, and then doing the same mods that FK8 people do to get more power; downpipe + fuel system upgrade.
Get a carbon fiber plug for the moon roof glass, remove the moon roof motor, then upgrade the front brakes to the FK8 brakes / rotors. If the FK8 calipers do not fit on the 10g Accord knuckles, then it's about $150 for the aluminum caliper brackets that let you use 04-09 Acura RL 4-piston aluminum calipers that go for about $250/pair. Then use those on the new, 2-piece FK8 rotors. Replace wheels / tires.
If any of this sounds like "too much work" or "too much of a hassle" then I guess you're just not actually a car enthusiast.
If you think I don't know what I'm talking about when it comes to modifying Accords to achieve measurable performance improvements; then I cannot hear you over the sound of the thousands of dollars that I have already made this year from doing this stuff.
Acura TLX might have some suspension parts such as sway bars that could be thicker, and an improvement over the 10g Accord sway bars.
My '06 Accord Sedan V6 6MT runs 12s. The only aftermarket part I have is a flywheel, LSD and 4 custom size shims in my Frankenstein transmission prototype. Shed 85 lbs already using junkyard Accord hybrid & Acura TL aluminum parts.
I'm so glad to see the Accord or any midsize sedan in this race.

The fact that an Accord was keeping up with a 300+ horsepower Mustang scares me😂
Yes, the most base Mustang made 😂. And keeping up with and losing by more then one and a half car links is pretty significant different actually. Don't get me wrong, the Accord is definitely fast for what it is. It is not going to be in competitive however against any of the American base sports cars in any way shape or form. The Mustang proved that. Despite the Mustangs excess weight, it only has a 300cc advantage and it still mopped the floor with the newest version of the Honda Accord turbo. Meanwhile that particular Ford setup's been around now for almost half a decade.

The new Accord does in fact have Type R DNA considering it has the same engine as the Civic Type R, but with a smaller turbo. But apparently these 2.0t Accords can have a somewhat simple ECU reflash to boost hp up to just a little over 300 hp instead of its stock 252 hp

Your channel is, by far, my favorite automotive channel. The only criticism I have after watching all of your videos is:
The photo finish camera shouldn't be a fish eye lens. It should be a zoom lens from way back so you can get a better idea of how close the race was. The way you have it, the GLI went by at almost a macro scale and the WRX was far away and I had no basis for distance between the cars.
Totally fair criticism! This is most a product of not owning enough cameras to cover every part of the race haha. Hopefully we can get a better camera on the finish line next season.

Tips from a Pro GLI Owner.
Number 1. Use Custom mode, set everything to sport, except engine sound. This gives you sport mode without the fake sounds. You can also adjust suspension to comfort, if you want to feel less road.
Number 2. Use custom mode for spirited driving, always have it on S mode. But before you come to complete stops, go back to D, the auto downshift from 2nd to 1st is janky.
Number 3. If you really want to do pulls, hold the traction control button for 3-5 secs, puts it in sport ESC. Computer doesn’t hold back any power this way.
Number 4. USE YOUR PADDLESHIFTERS. Coasting in 2nd gives you on demand power. The paddle shift are instant, zero delays. Whenever I need to pass on a 60 roll I just drop 2-3 gears and I’m gone.
Number 5. Utilize your stock wheels until it’s time to replace, they’re horrible but might as well not waste them. Get higher quality sticky tires.
Number 6. All you need is a new intake and tune, now you basically have another 100hp.

A drag race with affordable cars. Perfect!
I love your car selection but why don't you provide timings. If you have a consistent track place you can keep timings objective.
Its hard to compare the level of performance
Timings vary too much. Air temp may result in different horsepower output, surface temp has a large affect on tires, and the drivers themselves have a huge difference. People find it very hard to match C&D times because C&D may go full send without a care in the world while others will not risk the car. And these guys will not attempt the best times if it means destroying a car.
I like their head to head testing. All cars have the same air and surface temp to deal with.
Jay Burke I agree but it would be nice to at least have timing differences. So for example in this race the mustang would get a 0 and the accord might get a .2, signifying that it was behind by .2 seconds in the race. This way there’s no hard number people will say the cars shoulda done since they’re not giving that, the only thing they’re giving is the difference between the cars on that specific day which I would be happy with because I have a hard time always telling how much a car won by
This is meant for fun... Just saying.

Those Accords are definitely sleepers!
Beat a 2.0 in my 2.7 f150 but still wasn't by a lot maybe half a car length but still was impressed.
I went from a Honda Accord Sport to a Ford Mustang Ecoboost. I love my Mustang! ♥️
The Dads of the world thank you for a race review of cars they would consider!
Please send these cars around the track for a comparison!
You didn't fully do us GTI/GLI fanboys good. In addition to Sport mode, You need to hold down the traction button 3 seconds to put it in "sport ESC." Otherwise the ECU majorly restricts power on a launch to prevent wheel spin. Thats why it didn't do good on your "launch." BUT it would just roast the stock tires. If you put better tires like Continental DWS 06 or Michelin A/S 3 Sport, with Sport ESC then it would have hung with those cars on a launch. Probably would have come in 2nd behind the Mustang.
yeah i agree, i just hope the next time they bring in the GLI they also switch in drivers
i hope they switch to a better driver. the gli could definitely compete if he had done that..
@@tylerbrown3531 100% the GLI is faster than the accord on the 1/4 mile as well as it has a higher top speed. This guy is new to DSG it seems. Also this channel has an incentive to make the accord look better than all cars, thats why it used a bad driver with horrible tires. In their sonata N line video, the N lines launch control was glitched and they dint even mention it,
Cry cry 😢 😭 💔
@@0canadiens81 No need to cry. GLI fixed it's tires and beat the accord 5/6 times on another channel X))) You cry cry cry now
Did you guys run premium in the ecoboost? Just curious because if not the margin would have been alot more. The ecoboost is like a completely different car from 87 octane to 93. Cool vid! Had no idea the accord was that quick
Same for gli a lot of people say it's ok with 87 but it's night and day with 91. A whole different beast also the dsg is better in my opinion
@throttle house, please race the GLI and accord on a roll race and let the cars go futher, the GLI looked like it was catching on everytime!
What’s funny? Honda got trashed by this same Jetta tune for tune
Me going out to race my dad's Accord now hahaha
I had to pass a car in my dads accord the other day and it put a smile on my face when I felt the power. I was not expecting it to have any power at all lol. Torquey little fucker
Love the new intro!

Just bought a 2.0 Touring, that car is NO joke. Seems way underrated at 252 HP. Looks fast, is fast. Love it! First Honda ever, got the right one.
Audi A4 would put your accord to shame.
@@4nlover635 lmfao, i see you’ve got jokes.
@Chandler Davenport A4 S4, would blow the doors off of it.
@@4nlover635 The A4 would get spanked by the accord. The S4 would most certainly beat it. But it's also 10s of thousands of dollars more! lol
@@4nlover635 I would pick an Audi for sure but Hondas are way more reliable and this has a bit more hp.
I'm getting a GLI this summer and then tune it so i can beat the local ricers. Then after that i want the S3 or S4.
My dream would be a wagon version of the S4. Avante
Please toss the Accord against the BMW 330i, the C300 Mercedes and the Audi A4. You may also want to toss in the Lexus IS350 F sport. This would finalize almost everything.
In terms of price these are not in the same league
@@alexanderh.999 I know. But the hp are all in range. It's just to show performance comparison and see if you really get more for your money with another 10 to 20k.
@@nallis01 I think this is a great idea! Would love to see this episode and how the performance would compare!
Agreed! The Accord can do 0-60 in 5.3 seconds, which is about the same or slightly quicker than the Germans and the Lexus. That would be a great drag race.
@@TheBreakfastLover they do 5.5 - 5.6 secs under the most ideal temps and road conditions, limiting wheel hp. Not, in the slightest, 5.3.

Happy for the Mustang. Nice that we can compete on the low end.
Factory tuned WRX is a complete mess! Stage 1 that thing for a true review. Not to mention..if you buy a CVT WRX, over a manual , you need therapy..
Omgggg finally an ecoboost drag race!!! 😩❤️

Plus that DCT in the roll race made a huge difference. Off the line, they don’t put the power down, but they shine when rolling.
Can you do a drag race with the base charger, mustang and Camaro!
Base Charger is complete crap, that would go with a non-GLI jetta, both crap and heavy.
Base charger would get demolished, it'd have to be a RT to keep up
@@jimmypena2442 I feel like the sxt would get demolished, but then the RT would beat the rest of them easily
@@BigBertha-ot2nx I dont think by that much, the Ecoboost starts off strong especially with the 10 speed but will die down due to displacement. The Camaro would only be less close
@@jimmypena2442 I beat my buddys 17 charger rt w my 18 EcoBoost from a dig lol then it’s only a car length on a roll pretty damn close chargers got an exhaust too if that makes any difference
I've had a GLI for two years now, and it's a great car. It's fun to drive, gets great gas mileage, and the DCT in Sport manual mode is definitely fun. Great video, guys.
dont look at this horrible example of a race with bad tires. Go to sam car legion video. He beat the accord with the GLI 5 out of 6 races. GLI is a great car

WRX indeed has the best stock exhuats
What they forgot to mention is the GLI interior is rental car grade. Drivetrain is a 30k, interior is a 17k car. Had to cut costs somewhere I guess.

The Accord and the VW swapped places. Cause man I never expected the Accord to do so well and I never expected the VW to do so poorly.
Same
Poorly? Tires were the main problem with it. Roll race it was right there with everyone. Easy APR flash (no hardware changes) and it gains ~75 hp like nothing.
In the rolling race GLI's performance was quit imprerssive..!!
Powahhh
I kind of regret trading my 2019 Accord 2.0 6-speed manual, was definitely a unicorn! That car pulled nicely.

No we're not. But can say for sure if both were equally modded with downpiped and intake with upgraded fuel system plus tune. the WRX would win hands down.
