the 2.3 in the mustang is hardly a high performance compared to the 2.3 in the mk3 rs. mustang 300hp and 400nm of torque mk3 rs of the fpm 375 which most are is 378hp and 500nm of torque and in a car so capable as the rs platform its a night and day difference. that is also shown in the times of when the cars - mustang v8 and focus rs did the nurburgring mustang v8 8min7 seconds the mk3 did it a second and a half faster. in standard trim 345hp and 470nm of torque its great the sound of the v8 but its not that good and knowing the potential of how both cars can be modified the rs still comes out on to as a track focused car.
@@fugginrambo the motor is completely fine on track the only issues ever seen is lspi which on track is irrelevant and the incorrect head gasket issue also irrelevant .
The Coyote engine weighs less than 50 lbs more (closer to 30) than the 2.3 turbo and makes a lot more power (460 hp/420 lb ft) from the factory. It also has a lot more performance potential than the 4 cyl. Really no compelling reason to go with the 2.3L. Ford doesn't make the Focus anymore and that's not a bad thing. Mustang v8 time on the ring is faster than the Focus RS too (7:58 compared to 8:06). The v8 will also still be working long after the 2.3 is worn out.

There is no comparison between the V8 and the Ecoboost. But I drive a mildly tuned Ecoboost, it's reasonable and fun when I need it to be. It's been said, but the concept of it being more like an s13 descendant does it more justice than comparing to V8 cars. Great review and comparison. I own a 2016 Mustang GT in the States that I bought used, and it already had an intoxicating Roush exhaust on it, which sold me. With the right wheels and suspension setup, it holds its own in the corners pretty well too!! Definitely hard to beat for the price.
It's amazing that the Ecoboost is only 1 to 1.5 seconds off cars far more powerful and expensive. Especially when you're talking about an RTR Mustang and RCF Track Edition. With a few boltons and some suspension mods. You could easily close that gap some if not erase it.
Its really just the tires. A good set of tires would make all the difference on a tight track like that. Any normal sized track though the extra power on the GT would really show the legs.
@@ryanpetree6475 That's what I was saying to myself the entire video. Tires... on the same tires... the 2.3 may beat the V8 in track time... But it's not a mustang unless it has a V8...

Have a Kon Blue GT, just brilliant fun, looks amazing, not the best performer, but for the money you can’t find a car with a more amazing and characterful engine and with that much personality all around
I've owned multiple Mustangs. Everything including a 2020 EcoBoost HPP, a V6, and 5.0 so I know a little about all the engine options. Have you ever heard of the Lightning Lap at Virginia International Raceway where all the manufacturers do lap times to compare them to other cars? Well the 2020 EcoBoost HPP has a faster lap time than the Mustang GT 5.0.
yes, both were around 5 sec over the 3 min mark but the GT didn't get a fair shake (it was the first build 2015, the 2018 GT would be much closer to the supra time of the 3 min mark)
I'm surprised the weight difference isn't bigger... I would never limit myself like that. For another 12-15k you could put a big supercharger on the v8 and be running low 9's high 8's with some drag slicks... the turbo would need an engine rebuild for that
Yes, people have this misconception that modern V8s are heavy pig iron lumps like old.. My LS3 is lower CoG and very similar weight to the F20C it replaces, makes many times the torque, double the power, lasts longer with bores not going out of round.. costs less.. easier to work on, is more efficient LOL Oh yeah and +30kg for that benefit (almost all in trans), retains 50:50, there is no downside.
And that's just the initial price! The yearly costs of maintenance, insurance, and gas for the Gt are $thousands more a year. Not for me. I'd rather have a still very very fun turbo 4cylinder with beautiful mustang body style, and use that saved money for vacations, amazing dinners, and gifting to friends and family :)
My first time to this channel. Very informative, you know your stuff. Loved the video production. Great angles and views with the cameras. The over the hood view was bad ass. Keep it up. New sub!
Haters going to hate, but its tough to match the bang for the buck performance of a Mustang GT with the PP2 option. Faster around the track than many and faster in a straight line than most...and a limitless aftermarket for guys that just love to blow money on their car. lol
I bought a new Mustang 2.3 18:20 Ecoboost 10-speed auto convertible in 2019, after renting one for a two week touring holiday with my wife in New England. Every morning we would open up the roof, put on our Ray-Bans, get Steely Dan on the stereo and aim for the next town along the coast. Taking in the scenery with my elbow on the door and the aircon chilling the seat was such a cool way to travel, and with a 55mph speed limit there was no point in rushing, not that I wanted to. When I came home, I made straight for my local Ford Dealer, and I’ve never regretted it. So do these track comparisons mean anything to me? Do I need to shave a second off my quarter-mile? Would there have been any point in paying extra for Magnaride? Sorry, no. If you want the convertible, and like me you will be driving in the real world, the Ecoboost is all the car you need. IMHO, of course!
When I was on the Mustang forums you'd hear all the time of EB guys trading off quickly for GTs.... Never heard of guys with GTs trading in for EBs....
I had an 11 5.0 and loved it, kept it almost 10 years, no issues except recalls. Just got the 2.3L HPP with handling package, in large part due to this video and a few others.
This is about to be me soon. Although, after owning the EB for 8 years. Genuinly don't have too much bad to say about it other than the GT is more of everything. I will miss the theatrics of a turbocharged car though, and the MPG and maintenance costs of the smaller motor.
Good balanced review. I think at the end of the day the GT is the most desirable option, especially on the track. As a daily driver though the 2.3 might be more justifiable (albeit still a compromise) especially as the GT is such a revy engine whereby you can break the speed limit in 2nd gear (where the fun is). One would be tempted to shorten the diff in this case to enjoy more high revs at road speed. The useable low end torque on the 2.3 will be utilised on road. It's just such a pity they haven't nailed the noise of the 4 pot, maybe there's some good aftermarket exhausts around or opportunity to refine next ford upgrade as the did with the V8 in last update. Ideally the old 5 cylinder RS motor would have been awesome as the 5 cylinder sound is so unique and would of absolutely set it apart from everything else. I suppose that motor was retired in the focus for good reason ( prob emissions). Anyway great review would be awesome to have a "daily driver" comparison review to see if the gap between lessens, Cheers.

The thing about the ecoboost is, not 1 will stay unfettered with. You buy a COBB and JUST with the stage 1 with no other mods and the car is transformed. You do intercooler with just a K&N panel filter with an E30tune which is cheap as chips and the thing is near on 380hp and still much lighter. it really does put the engine part back above the Focus RS position and give the car that bit of character. WHich imo is not as much a charmer as the GT on the streets but something that you will enjoy more on track and on a windy mountain road. mid gear pull on a decent E30 tune will pin you back hard. very hard.

Gota love that V8 sound track, I know I love that in my V8 convertible mustang it's just a fun and practical car. One comment I see is the fuel consumption, I've been pleasantly surprised certainly better than the mighty falcon, I've done the Sydney - Melbourne run multiple times averages 8.1L/100 which ain't that bad. Brought mine in 2020, have already done 54,000 km so it's well used and well loved!!

Right lol. My Taurus SHO has the Twin turbo 3.5 V6 and it is a beast of a sedan. If that engine was in a mustang I bet it would outperform the GT model
Great driving! All around the chassis on this gen Mustang is very impressive. The V8 is just amazing but I live in Southern California where our self-serving politicians and our President have really hiked up the price of gas. The irony is that we have some really fantastic driving roads over here. Because of that, for me and my money it would be the 2.3 High Performance Package with the Handling Package with a 6-speed manual. I think the 6-speed manual really suits the character of this engine and the money I save in gas means I can drive more. Also, I don't know if there is a difference between the exhaust between the 2.3 High Performance here in the States and in Australia, but the 2.3 HP over here actually sounds pretty good, and it does have crackles and pops. I am impressed so much with this car I am trying to add it to the collection. Thanks, and keep up the great work.
Getting excited for my 5.0 GT, its due to turn up (UK) mid April and ordered last August. I have MagneRide and the best bit, it's a manual. I have been told its one of the last Mustang manuals to come into the EU/UK due to a change in noise legislation Ford have dropped the option. I've had the RS and ST with the 2.3 Turbo and its a lovely engine. However I wanted a naturally aspirated V8 with manual before they these lovely engines get legislated out of the EU/UK and looks like I left it to the last minute to order. I'm going to be finding any reason to go on a long drive over the summer.
I imagine the 5.0s arnt too common in the uk or even the mustang in general. Should hold its value well as v8s become less common, might even go up in price. Congrats and enjoy the car.
Had the gt, would pick it over Hp eco boost every time. But I do see the benefits and I sell the appeal. It’s just not for me. I currently have a Wb scat. Will always be a v8 man
I drove a couple of Challengers one was older. It felt ok to me, it just felt heavy. I'm more of a Ford guy these days and I just felt more at home in a Mustang. I ended up getting a 2009 GT over a 2013, mainly because the 2013 was an auto. I enjoyed the 2009 music alot better as well. The 4.6 just sounds better to me than the Coyote. I ended up not really getting to enjoy it much and we "needed" a truck so it got traded in for a 2010 f150 Supercab. I know I'm sticking to older cars/trucks but my vehicle budget is half what my wife's is. She has a 2018 Grand Cherokee with the V6 and it is every bit as fast as that 2009 GT.
It's not an Australia thing. You should have been on the US Mustang forums when they announced the Eco-boost line. I personally don't really want one but I also can respect the different options, a powerful 4 cylinder in a Mustang would have completely different manners on the track.
Give me the 2.3. I enjoy engineering. And it's not as embarrassing to say I have a 2.3 turbo as it is to say I got the V8 and the 2.3 is still on my ass.
Both cars gave a good showing. V8 obviously sounds better. Also noticed that the Michelin tires were much quieter than the Pirelli's, which screamed in torture the entire circuit. Had the GT had the magnetic dampers, it might have even beat that Supra.
That car is a base one. It does not have the handling package with magna ride. You can tell by the rims. The handling package has the performance pack 2 front rims.
NA ALL DAY. Traction improvement is due to laggy crappy turbo power curves, its easier to traction control an NA V8 also power pulses are 2x more per revolution = more spread out = less tyre stress/peak load.
Far out these Turbo Charged Mustangs are quick as hell when compared to the V8. Looking at the V8 numbers you would think the performance would be heaps better. But when we see Mercedes making a 4 Cylinder with 425 HP makes you think technology has advanced a lot.
idk given the weight difference...and that its a shared platform...ive always wondered what a "racing" or custom built 2.3 EB mustang could perform like with different struts/height/springs than a standard V8 designed engine bay. As well as a multi point strut brace to add some weight to keep the front/steering/grip planted. Since the 2.3 eco isnt really the breadwinner of the mustang its not like ford would ever invest into making something like this into an actual adaptation. But in reality those changes completely change the handling/cornering characteristics of the same car/unibody/chassis. Just to really get a more "build" centered around the 2.3 and its potential vs the v8/gt design/original design. Unfortunate the history with their MT transmission/reliability
I’ve owned both cars. A 2017 6MT Ecoboost and a 2021 6MT GT. The Ecoboost is good but the GT is more then twice the car and the torque is intoxicating.
I would rather have the 2.3 for handling and track fun. But the 5.0 for straight line racing. I'm sure the GT handles fine but you could still get good power out of the 4cyl and make it handle really well
@@mf-ud1uo Not sure how people can justify a 100lb difference thinking the v8 is like a tank and the ecoboost is some lightweight car. (The ecoboost is also heavy as hell for a I4 RWD car). 150bhp more than makes up the 100lb difference.
The HPP is no slouch, half the cylinders and a hair over 2 seconds slower than it's big brother is splitting hairs, yes there's the sound, but I'll take the lower insurance and cost of ownership for nearly the same experience...I had a Shelby GT350 owner stop me at a light to tell me how nice my car was, shocked me for sure...lol
Yeah, I've gotten a lot of compliments on my HPP (handling pack, black on black, possibly illegal tint lol). Nobody in real life actually cares that it's a 2.3 and not a 5.0... May be just because how good the car looks (especially having quad tip exhaust and the rear diffuser), the HPP rear looks great compared to a standard Ecoboost.
I’m a week away from getting one and while I would love to get say a GT500, gas in SoCal is so bad it’s either an ecoboost or a Toyota. I have a classic that has the V8 and even once it’s done being restored I won’t daily driver it. Don’t have those worries so much with a new 4 cylinder pony and it’s helluva lot easier to insure than the 69. I’m aiming to get it in white to match the nice new Oxford White I had put on the 69.
Interesting how your driving sytle changes between them. I presume mostly because of engine characteristics and gear ratios. Not a knock - just an observation. I think it would also be interesting to see how they go around somewhere a bit bigger where you can open them up a bit. I know that plays even more into the GT's hands but its not really about which is faster because we just saw that. More to see how each behaves as the speeds increase.
@@sammccarthy6835 The GT is 52.8/47.2 front/rear. The I4 is 52/48 front/rear. There is only 65kg difference total and the GT uses larger rear wheels/tyres along with a few other differences. Its equivalent of adding 35kg to the front and 30kg to the rear. If you can tell the difference in weight balance from that on a 1700kg+ car you're better than most. You could literally make the same difference in front/rear balance by adjusting your seat further forward or rearward.
After having two ecoboost and test driving the v8 yea don't play yourself get the v8 i really see what people mean now tho the ecoboost is a wonderful car and makes for a great first sports car
These comparisons/arguments always seem strange to me. If the larger capacity engine powered car, happens to be a V8, also had forced induction there would be no contest.
one word: price , you see....obviously the V8 is the better model, but it costs more, these "comparisons/arguments" exist because people want to buy a Mustang and want to know if the cheaper option is good enough.
It's sad and/or just that the mentality of cars like the Mustang needing V8's will lead to these cars not being the fastest and eventually not existing at all.
Niiiiiiice video. As far as track day- turbo. It's a lighter car and should carry speed better into and out of the corners. As far as every day driving, V8. Comfy, solid engine, no tricks (naturally aspirated), and, dammit, it's one of the last generations of the mechanical muscle beasts. Love them both. Think they kick serious arse. Was surprised at the results. This video must've been a blast to make. Thanks!
Hey Mate, here in America we use Horse Power and Torque, it would be nice if you told us in US. Cool video, I have 14 turned Fiesta ST with stickie Michelin Pilot Sport tires, my ST would on there donkey on that tight track. The Fiesta Flash.
Would've been interesting to see how much better the 2.3 HP would do on the new rubber, swapping the rims of the V8 to it might not be something you'd want to do with a road test but should've been fine on the race track. But considering that the V8 didn't really have severe traction issues, the 2.3 still would've been slower. I'd just like to know by how much :P
That's what I was thinking, you can hear the tyres complaining the whole time on during the lap on the 2.3 whilst on the GT not only the traction seems better but the turn in and lateral grip too. Don't even think a rim swap is necessary, just a set of PS4 S tyres or equivalent like some Goodyear Eagle F1 Supersport or the newly realised Bridgstone Potenza Sports (RE001 replacements)
Compared with the other cars listed that's a great time, particularly around that very tight track The driver is obviously a RWD expert so that helps, understeer to over steer, eeekk!!!
Other than the gas mileage their is really no reason to pay 50k for a 4 cylinder when you can get a baseline GT for a little less, idk maybe if your getting it as a first car then go with the 4 cylinder
I've had a 4cyc 2.4l tuned and now have a 6cyc 3l. Both use 98 and both have similar combined fuel economy. Comparing the 2 mustangs the 5L is the way to go for me. The 2.3L is just not worth it. A 5L with turbo or blower is much more fun than a 2.3L turbo. If the 5L has similar fuel economy as the 2.3L, the 5L is the winner as the 2.3L would be consuming too much and more stressed.

I just got my 2021 Ecoboost in December. It has the exact colors as the GT in the video. It such a fun car! I love how the car handles.
more of the 4 cly sits behind the front centre ' axle ' line.. better handling
The 2.3 liter HP engine is impressive but the V8 is too good to pass up, it loves revving to red line and sounds great while doing it.
the 2.3 in the mustang is hardly a high performance compared to the 2.3 in the mk3 rs. mustang 300hp and 400nm of torque mk3 rs of the fpm 375 which most are is 378hp and 500nm of torque and in a car so capable as the rs platform its a night and day difference. that is also shown in the times of when the cars - mustang v8 and focus rs did the nurburgring mustang v8 8min7 seconds the mk3 did it a second and a half faster. in standard trim 345hp and 470nm of torque its great the sound of the v8 but its not that good and knowing the potential of how both cars can be modified the rs still comes out on to as a track focused car.
@@laurahunt5146 The Ford Focus RS is notoriously unreliable and likes to blow head gaskets. It's 2.3L engine is overstressed.
@@laurahunt5146 The RS is a cool and capable car on paper. The motor and brakes just can't take the pounding dished out on a real track.
I was o n the fence between the 2.3HP and the 5.0. I wound up ordering a 2021 GT/CS with 5.0 Happy I did. Nothing like the sound and feel of the 5.0 V8.

There is no comparison between the V8 and the Ecoboost. But I drive a mildly tuned Ecoboost, it's reasonable and fun when I need it to be. It's been said, but the concept of it being more like an s13 descendant does it more justice than comparing to V8 cars.
I would love a V8 car, but as a middle class car guy, the Ecoboost just makes a lot of sense on multiple levels.
That V8 is sweet, I would take that over a supra any day for the same level of track performance, and I say this as a lexus owner! Nice review!
The Mustang is close, but isn't quite as good as a Supra around a track. Minus points for the terrible interior but the sound is undeniably better.

Nice driving while giving good commentary. Great audio of cars during hot lap. I'm an old guy in USA and a long time Mustang fan. Kinda surprised I got such a great comparison review on them all the way from Australia. Happy to subscribe and check out more of your content.

You buy the Eco only if you cant afford the V8
yes, both were around 5 sec over the 3 min mark but the GT didn't get a fair shake (it was the first build 2015, the 2018 GT would be much closer to the supra time of the 3 min mark)
Great video👌👌so good see a Aussie Car Journo actually having fun in car instead of yapping on about the interior and Apple car play etc for 30mins
Amazing video bro, great camera work, you said no non sense. I swear your appearance is deceiving. SUBSCRIBED.
My LS3 is lower CoG and very similar weight to the F20C it replaces, makes many times the torque, double the power, lasts longer with bores not going out of round.. costs less.. easier to work on, is more efficient LOL
Oh yeah and +30kg for that benefit (almost all in trans), retains 50:50, there is no downside.
Faster around the track than many and faster in a straight line than most...and a limitless aftermarket for guys that just love to blow money on their car. lol
I just love the V8 Mustang GT of course because I have one thank you for your great show
I bought a new Mustang 2.3 18:20 Ecoboost 10-speed auto convertible in 2019, after renting one for a two week touring holiday with my wife in New England.
IMHO, of course!
i just recently bought a 2022 ecoboost manual and this is the most fun ive ever had in a car.
I will miss the theatrics of a turbocharged car though, and the MPG and maintenance costs of the smaller motor.
congrats on 20k guys
2020 gt convertible. Black on black. Gets a ton of attention wherever I go. Love this car.
Anyway great review would be awesome to have a "daily driver" comparison review to see if the gap between lessens, Cheers.
mbrp race catback or tomei titanium totally fixes the soundtrack of the ecoboost i have tried both and stuck to the mbrp simply for the cost

Congrats and enjoy the car.
save up a few grand if you intend to keep it for long time, because the magnetic ride shocks for all cars are damn expensive.

Isn't the 2.3L Turbo ecoboost engine the same engine used in the Mazda 6 MPS (or Mazda speed for the US market)?
No
The HPP has a different block than a standard Ecoboost. HPP uses the block from the Focus RS.
Great video guys
idk given the weight difference...and that its a shared platform...ive always wondered what a "racing" or custom built 2.3 EB mustang could perform like with different struts/height/springs than a standard V8 designed engine bay.
I'm sure the GT handles fine but you could still get good power out of the 4cyl and make it handle really well
When the GT excels at everything vs the 2.3 besides cost and mpg. That's some serious copium you're huffing.
@@mf-ud1uo Not sure how people can justify a 100lb difference thinking the v8 is like a tank and the ecoboost is some lightweight car. (The ecoboost is also heavy as hell for a I4 RWD car). 150bhp more than makes up the 100lb difference.
My 19 GT feels heavy but is a lot of fun in the Los Angeles canyons. Uphill is great, but the downhill is hard
The weight difference is barely more than my GF.
Only a 4% weight difference with over 30% less power.
I want both of those cars.... and a Shelby.
Yeah I'm team turbo V8. Hellion Turbo to be precise.
Hellions trash you either procharged it or whipple it
Interesting how your driving sytle changes between them.
I4 is better in corners because of how fuckin heavy the front end of the V8 is
@@sammccarthy6835 The GT is 52.8/47.2 front/rear.
Dude this guy can DRIVE!!!
Very interesting review. Is the colour of the GT "carbonised grey". Looks good! I've been thinking about buying the GT and this review really helps.

I have a 2015 GT 50th edition. Tried out the eco but I didn’t like the sound, if I wanted a 4 cylinder sound car I’d go for some jdm
It's sad and/or just that the mentality of cars like the Mustang needing V8's will lead to these cars not being the fastest and eventually not existing at all.
Around the corner the ecoboost has it all day but when they reach a straightaway that 2.3 is done for
Niiiiiiice video.
Man the tyre squeel from the Pirellis is enough to make the decision of which car to take!
Great review thanks.
Vanilla Ice wasn’t rollin’ in a 4 cylinder, nor would I.

Going for the underdog today!
