- Some people think every Mustang should have a V-8, but we’re not part of that crew. This super-boosted Mustang gets a revised version of the turbo-four we loved in the old Focus RS - plus, tires, brakes and suspension parts from the top-dog Mustangs like the GT and Bullitt. With 330 horsepower and a lighter front end, Randy Pobst takes this hot hatch-powered pony car out for a blistering lap at Willow Springs. #Mustang #EcoBoost #TireRackHotLap #Ad
"It's more sports car than muscle car." I think that quote does a great job describing this car and for some people that is the selling point. Great job MT. I love these Hot Laps. Keep it up!
Thats exactly what I want too. So glad Randy feels this way.
Randy is so fun to listen to and watch. Whatever MT pays him should be doubled
I use to autocross with Randy back in the day, One great driver

Lol straight shill
We have a 2018 Ecoboost and the car is an excellent street car that plenty entertaining and still gets above 30mpg on the freeway. This is the future of the budget pony car.
I swear randy could make a Toyota camry sound interesting
My 2020 Camry is actually fairly interesting.
Hello again, person I see everywhere
lscansir cured how
lscansir cured I mean how would it keep up, this ecoboost from the rs has way better specs and they both weigh the same.
lscansir cured this hpp Mustang does 60 in 4.8vs 5.7. The top speed is also 155, which Camry does 135. Camry wouldn’t keep up, it’d only pass in reliability.
I mean come on I drive a Camry lol
Has more HP than my 2010 GT had.
autosource yeah I get it, I have a new GT350, but 4cyl and v8 having the same power is crazy. Like the Koenigsegg twin turbo 3 cylinder.
So does a civic type r but it’s still no v8
True but advantage to the 4 banger is it weighs less.
@The Patriot just speaking in general. People hate on the eco boost but over all the car weighs less than the V8 so in reality should do better in the corners.
@@fredwilliams7893 get a honda civic type r its better
Had a 2015 ecoboost Roush - 350hp with air intake - everyone thought I paid 60k but out the door it was 35k - lots of fun to drive - mean sound from a 4 banger and interior was excellent. 30 mpg - Check em out.
You paid 35k for 4 cycl 😂
@@axel3895 Who gives a shat if it's fast and handles well?
I got a 2016 Roush RS1 with upgraded turbo and cooling system. Good car, love it. Wasnt interested in an N/A car, ive owned mostly turbo cars.

"Is the Shelby GT350 of 4-cylinder mustangs". 😂 😂
What's wrong with that statement? It's very valid. I don't see what's funny...
These things are great to drive and pretty quick for what it is, I’ve driven a gt and these and these handle way better you can feel the difference in the weight up front. It’s not as powerful as fast obviously but it’s plenty fast enough to be fun and get you in trouble
Auto Young This is one of or if not the best car in its financial segment. Look at the competition, they either don’t produce enough power, aren’t daily drivable, or are completely outdated - specifically the 370z and the BRZ.
Most people that bash the Ecoboost or even the high performance variant haven’t driven them nor own them. Honestly, it’s best to do your own research and ignore what these idiots have to say. And this is coming from a GT 350 owner!

Oh i know. I'm a GT Track Pack owner myself. It just baffles my mind how people get caught up on the 4-cylinder part when that in itself isn't even a bad thing. The car makes the power and it performs great. I don't get it...
I'd rather have a 2.7 or 3.5 ecoboost but I have a feeling that would make the 5.0 null and void. I really liked the last gen of the v6 mustang...that was a proper sports car. Made all the right sounds, felt great, very easy to drive it hard. I haven't been in a 2020 four cyl yet but I did drive the gen one of the eco boost and was very let down , it seemed lack luster to me.
"These ducts on the hood, they're real"...while simultaneously thinking about the new edge mustang hood...
It sure would have been nice to see comparative hot lap times for other stock mustangs. For example regular EcoBoost. Regular GT. Etc..
I just found a couple hotlaps to compare. Abour 1 second difference compared to GT500.
1:33:84 GT500 hot lap
1:34:57 Ecoboost HPP
1:36:11 GT350R
Are you sure about those times?
Hard to believe it beat the GT350R😮
My son just bought one and it's great. We both love it. We recently squeezed 36.1 mpg out of it on an all highway trip. Unbelievable little car
Just picked up our brand new 2.3 High Performance six speed manual here in Australia. Bloody fantastic car. The missus...who talked me into buying it...demands we keep it on “sport” all the time as the exhaust sounds way better. We test drove a V8 manual (to see how it felt in terms of seating position) before ordering ours, and honestly, the V8 felt no quicker in the real world.
We love it.
Sports Plus with Track Exhaust Set up will give you the best sound. You can create a My mode and change it every time you jump in. This thing was made to be driven on Sports Plus.
Honestly If this was just not a mustang it’d be respected a lot more lol. It’s a great set up.
I just bought a 2022 EcoBoost HPP in Grabber Blue with a 10 speed auto. It’s a lot of fun.
Nobody will ever admit it's a reborn Mustang SVO
I had an 85 SVO. In super hot weather, it was slower than a Honda Odyssey full of gravestones.
Because it's not. SVO was top trim level mustang with advanced tech and matched 5.0 on hp. This is just the same 2.3 turbo ford sells across the lineup theres nothing special about it really
@@rickybobby8224 43 likes saids otherwise sir your wrong
I just bought an ecoboost and I had an SVO and a Turbo coupe a long time ago. I like the V8 sound but the cost of running a GT is very high and I still prefer a turbo Mustang to any other imports.
Honestly; I'm impressed they are able to get this much power out of a 4 cylinder engine.
then youll be more impressed to know that for about 8kk-15k more you can be making well over 600whp on the older generations of the ecoboost
I just rented one... And it drives like a real sports car a lot more the the GT does and it's extremely nimble.
I suggest you look into the Mercedes A45 AMG-S model then, or Koenigsegg's Tiny Friendly Giant
@@twany442 I rented one too. For what it is its really good and enough power for the average person. Im still probably going to buy a GT but the EcoBoost is fine
@@FlightX101
Agreed.
I’m just here to read V8 owners’ comments. 🤦🏻♂️
🤣
As a V-8 owner who lives at high altitude, I am seriously looking at forced induction for my next car. I grew up on big, torquey V-8 motors, so if I was at sea level, I'd want the 4-cam V-8. But I also remember when cars like the BMW 2002 came along and made balance and handling something worth having. I think the force-fed 2.3 would be tons of fun on the local mountain roads. As long as the rest of the car is up to spec (like a real 8.8 w/ a Torsen in the back) I might be persuaded. The fact that the cooling system can't keep up isn't reassuring.
My V8 sounds better, indisputable lol. The HPP is a pretty dope setup though
Why? I have a 20 GT. I still think the turbo stangs are awesome. I even like stangs with a duratec under the hood. 👍
Joseph Menendez Me too. I like all Mustangs. I have a Procharged V6. 👌🏼
I had a feeling, this message was brought to you exclusively by Pirelli Tires~
WOW!!!! I am impressed!!!! The best of both worlds!!!!! Ford did their homework on this one, and it shows. Thanks for sharing.
250 wheel horsepower
Leaking timing cover, leaking vct solenoids
Faulty wastegate, blown turbo seals
Misfires, blown headgaskets
Heat soak, overheating
Been there done that traded it in bought a GT.

That don’t even make sense bro
@@GRIM.2002 I think he means a turbo V8, which would actually be really cool
Eco and coyote doesn't blend well together.
Whatcha talking about Willis ?
@@xMUHANNADx94 and u think eco and boost go together? Especially in the raptor engine
Too bad they wouldn't put the 3.5 Ecoboost in the Mustang.
In the Taurus SHO, that eco-3.5 made 365hp. Imagine that in a Mustang!!!
ikr...just minus the awd setup of the sho..a little to pedestrian for a mustang...tho a turbo upgrade and tune will have that 2.3 eco putting out gt350 power
Why? So it would be heavier and have maybe 30 more hp?
@@728GT because with 3 bar map sensor, meth injection and advanced timing heavy tune 3.5 eco gets to 500-550hp...2.3 ecoboost needs upgraded turbo and tune to get there...plus 3.5 eco with good exhaust sounds much better than 2.3 eco....but neither come close to 5.0 sound, especially with headers and exhaust
@@c5d53g2e it is making 450hp in the F150s now.
I have a modified 2019 performance pack. Picked it up for 20k with only 1700 miles on it. After a few mods the car is an absolute riot to drive. Owned many v8 mustangs and honestly this car stacks up. But I would not get a base model that car caw very different
Nice! A driver’s car you and use on the daily! 🏎👍 Anything you don’t like about it?
@@RaceGasSmellsGood only thing is the stereo is lacking. I had a 2006 gt before this and the sound quality was much better. It's definitely a windows down stereo. Other than that I think it's worth the money if y I I get a good deal. Too expensive new 👍
I will give Ford credit for not limiting themselves to what some people think a Mustang *should* be. Always moving forward. Hopefully we’ll see an electric version soon.
Oh they do! It's the Mustang Mach E! A four door electric Mustang SUV! 😭😭😭
Though the Mach-E is touted as a Mustang, I would like to see an ecoboost with electric motors assisting on all four corners. Would make for very quick 0-60 times, while getting hybrid fuel economy. Now THAT’S what I would call a game changer.
@@E52O4 I agree that would be awesome
300+ hp for a turbocharged four-banger from factory. Good job, Ford! A buttload of large capacity V8's can't even come close to how well these new, small engines perform these days. The V8 diehards can weep, but this is the way things are now. And I bet my lunch money that the great handling on this Mustang was helped a lot by the lighter engine in the first place.
Those V8s will still be on the road long after all manufacturers' turbo Fours have burned out and hit the junkyard!
@@MisterMikeTexas 😄 fact
I can really appreciate what ford built here but I just love the sound of the V8 too much to buy one of these

the best review of the ultimate mustang for the price !!
3:06 The 6-speed Getrag you "know and love" in mustangs. Well one of those is right. Job security for guys like Ben Calimer rebuilding these things I guess.
Randy has become quite the salesman
Love the way he spoke about the car, whether it was genuine or not. When the HPP Ecoboost was first teased, I was dead set on owning one. However, the prices are too high for my circumstance and as time went on I debated back and forth between GT or Ecoboost. 2015-16 GTs go for a very fair price used these days, and before the HPP prices ever dropped down would take a couple years. I promised I'd get my mustang this year for my 25th Birthday, and I did! Which one I chose? Neither. #MACHEbaby! Lol just kidding, I ended up going with my favourite body style Mustang, the 05-09 early S197. Ended up buying a beautiful black '06 GT with silver stripes. Love it to death!
Not that anyone asked
Why tho? Isn’t an Ecoboost faster than that generation of GT?
nickweg1996 they’re pretty much neck and neck until top end when the gt takes ahold that’s if they’re both stock. Atleast from my encounters
Crowd Eater just looked it up. That HPP Eco would destroy an 05-09 GT. The Ecoboost has more horsepower, faster to 60, faster 1/4 mile, and a higher top speed.
nickweg1996 I was referencing base model ecoboosts
Congratulations. Have fun and be safe!!!
I have one. traded a 2018 GT in for it. The GT has the top end ,but 0-60, the eco is right there. Handling wise, the HPP with handling pack is as good or better then a GT PP2. Fun little car. No regrets. If horsepower is more important than handling, get the GT.
I bought one of these and if you don't expect a 450 hp 450-ft-lb kind of car and take it for what it is, they are a lot of fun, especially when you're only paying 400 or so a month for it. This little 4 banger is impressive if you remind yourself that's what it is, not a 5.0 Coyote, but not worlds behind it in performance either.
Randy is pure gold. He should be in every single video.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the 4cyl in this car. Would make a good daily driver with good mpg and reasonable insurance cost
“It even sounds great” cuts to vacuum cleaner noises
I think with a exhaust it would be good but u right
That engine will always sound like a generator. 4 cylinders simply do not sound good.
@@flyingphoenix113 Modern Turbo 4 cylinders you mean. 4 Cylinders from the 70s to early 00s sound fine.

Great video. I'm glad this Ecoboost Mustang is a good performer. I love Mustangs and I've considered one as my daily car.
As a DD, the ecoboost is tough to beat if you love Mustangs. Love my 2018 6 speed manual transmission. I’m old school, and love shifting. The Gettrag transmission gets hate from some, but it’s been an easy car to drive for me.
That 1:34.57 puts it only a quarter second behind a Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder. Not too shabby for a 4-banger.
Half_Centaur tires could also make a difference there tho
@@alim7502 Sure, but the Ecoboost has P255's at the rear and the Lambo came with P295's. And nobody's putting terrible tires on the Lambo. Probably Pirellis or better.
@@Half_Centaur, tire technology has made a quantum leap in the last decade. The Corsas on the Mustang are miles better than even the stickiest P Zero available on that generation's Gallardo Superleggera
Kinda disappointed in the cooling issues. There's no excuse for that. I know he's running the car much harder that it'll ever be run on the street so it's probably not an issue most of the time but still.
That’s the biggest problem with the current Eco-Stang, they are extremely restricted (airflow), and have an anemic intercooler, however they can be fixed through aftermarket
Install a performance intercooler and call it a day.
I have installed everything to stop the cooling issue. No luck. Last ditch is to add meth. Something is wrong with a car with a track app that cant stay on the track without reducing pawer from the CEL. What the heck.
@@coach765 You need to change the radiator. Check out the CSF Ecoboost model.
@@MrTL3wis I have a Mishimoto racing radiator in it already.
I had an 86 that originally had the pukey 4 cylinder. When I bought it, I pulled the 4 out and installed a 351 crate motor, swapped the clunky 3-speed auto for a Borg-Warner T45, and the rearend from an '83 Thunderbird.
This super muscle car is the best ever made.
Glad you ran the Ecoboost. Thanks
So great to watch someone who knows what they’re doing run a track and not the other idiots in Mustangs on RUclips! A lot of torque oversteer and curbs and wheels and axels in the videos. Lol. Well done. I ordered a ‘22 Ecoboost and can’t wait for it to come in.
The second coming of the SVO! 🏎🚀👍
"6 speed getrag that you know and love..." 😂
Why TF wouldnt you include some comparison track times in this video ?
Because it's an advertisement
So you can wonder...
Because it cut power caused by the heat on tracl.
Thank you for enlightening us with the engineering details of the Ecoboost Mustang. Good to know the engineers are also busy improving this Mustang, though it needs a bigger radiator :)
Just run it with the heater on full blast.
Best car money can buy
About the same lap as the Type R. Wow. 1:34.46 in the Type R, 1:34:57 in the Stang.
i really love the mustang
I messed around with the Ford 'Build Your Own' website with this vehicle. If you spec this out to the max, you might as well buy the V8. This car tops out in the mid $40K range. I know of a basic V8 with a manual that was sold recently in the low $30K range. That leaves a lot of $ for upgrades.
If I'm not mistaken, the HP package runs the same size intercooler as the base 2.3 EB. Put a big aftermarket intercooler on it and the heat soak issues would probably disappear.
The chip does not like that and it will run too rich or too lean.
@@MultiBbrand You mean you'd modify hardware and not get it tuned?!!
I put a Wagner intercooler on my 2016 ecoboost along with a cp-e downpipe, K&N cold air kit and a tune on the dyno and got well over 300 wheel horsepower and 400 pd Ft torque. Also there was no turbo lag. Traded it in for a brand new 2018 5.0 GT. The GT is nice but I miss the ecoboost sometimes. It was very lively and fast and handled well.
Even my wife bought the Coyote........the 2.3L has no "soul"! Nor rumble like the Coyote especially in "sport" mode and rumble mobile exhaust setting. Love our EcoBoost Fiesta ST Mountune, but the Mustang is just what we wanted to take us back to 1970! Moan and groan about the tires, we have them on our "California Special" and they are great. Look on RUclips for a stock GT doing a 3.99 0-60 and an 11.99 quarter on them! And the handling is super!
Yet at a track like Willow Springs the Ecoboost would beat your GT 5.0.
the EcoBoost 2.3 is a solid motor but I'm shocked they haven't put the 2.7 or the 3.5 in the mustang yet
It would make the v8 too obsolete
The 2.7 is in the works for the mustang st
@@12gaugetwinkie i feel like people will always love their v8's but a light weight turbo v6 would make the s550 chassis an absolute track weapon
They don’t do it because it would probably be fast than the GT and they don’t want that.
The 3.5 version in the F150 special with 450 HP would beat the GT if it was a option. If they could make it sound like a V8 I’d be all for it.
@@Imprisoned1995 they will have to tune it differently also. The gt is no slouch with the 10speed either.
Randy is so good at his job
Wish the OEM manufactures building these turbo 4's would include a higher performance cooling system. Why not, if you've marketed the car as a performance pack... I have the same issue with my EJ257.
I agree it's sad how many performance cars don't include enough cooling. From cars like this ecoboost mustang and your Subaru. Even track focused cars like the early c7 z06 and honda civic type r have issues with cooling. It was one of the main reasons I bought my Camaro SS 1le. I took it to buttonwillow in late June and ran 4 20 minute sessions in the 100F heat. And my oil temp stayed constant.
nomnomguy680 How do you like your 1LE? Those are so much car for the money and I feel like many people overlook them-their loss!
Largest scam was the 370z NISMO. The "legendary" NISMO can't make the 370z last a single lap without cooking it self.

Great video, I just prefer a smaller lighter car ( and truck for that matter ) so in the US that puts me in a 2 seater sports car. Which is what I have. The US manufacture's vehicles just keep getting bigger and bigger. A smaller lighter vehicle is more maneuverable and quite often better handling.
I miss you @Randy Probst!
Just add Wagner competition intercooler ($500) with CVX pipes, Mishimoto Oil cooler. The IC is reliably less than 7F over ambient. Put proper Brembo 6-pot on it and you have a car to reckon with.
Thats my biggest gripe is the heat soak with the garbage intercoolers ford slaps these things with from the factory. They just can't keep up whatsoever
I agree. The stock intercooler in my Focus ST is barely good enough for like one WOT pull and then the air charge temps skyrocket.
That because Ford doesn't see then as performance cars. They make them because there is a market for itand they make money off it but not because they like them as performance cars, it's sad. I hate them tbh but I know a lot that like them and Ford should cater to them a little more it's not fair

Theres no ecoboost 3.7...
Only 2.7 or 3.5....
Customers would be scatching their heads, because it would probably be faster than the GT, and lighter. They could have done that in 2014, that would have been the engine to do it to, Ford did not think it through
Michael Tabanao exactly.
Michael Tabanao at least use the 2.7 ecoboost 325 hp and 400 lb/ft...for the s650 for MY2023 mustang.
I wish they would just bring back the 3.7, it was good enough without a turbo.
My wife might actually like this one
More low-end torque than the V8. WOW!
The naturally aspirated V8 Mustangs are pathetic at the low revs unfortunately. The opposite of a Hemi
DOHC naturally aspirated motors aren’t generally known for low end torque but breath better on the top end where the V8 mustangs shine
I'm concerned about long term longevity. It's a heavy car and a small engine that has a large demand on it. Direct injection and turbo charging puts an enormous strain on the compression rings and rod bearing. I bet by 75k miles that it will consume excessive oil and would be very surprised if it didn't.
Ive seen a few and surprisingly they are holding up better than the gt. As long as they get a catch can. After 50k miles without one the fuel economy and peak power suffers slightly.
More like the cylinders will move and you’ll have zero compression from the open deck, zero gusset design, like in the focus RS @10km...
You're forgetting this 2.3 is a Mazda motor that ford is using it is very tough.😊
@@joefurrer5428 I've seen plenty of tuned 2.3 pushing 400 hp with no problems, after 400 they start having problems and the block starts to give way at 500 hp. I do know that that inline 4 motors are pretty efficiency and adding an intake, downpipe, and tune just makes them crazy. Wow!!!!😰 the mustang is a true american legend. Need for speed movie proved that to me.👍
How exactly is this model cooling brake discs with inverted hats? The base GT brakes have a backwards rotor design. Air flow from the chassis side/under-tray while traditionally very effective if designed well does about as much as having someone mounted to each corner blow on them like a cup of coffee with a rotors designed like this.
They should put that turbo on a v6
I would buy in a heartbeat
Would have been cool if the cyclone engine was still around. It would have been a little lighter, would sound great with an active exhaust, wouldn’t get heat soaked so easily, and be rev happy. They could easily make Hp reliably just like the aftermarket did.
Famous ecocrap.. better get the 5.0 or v6 if u dont want to visit the repair shop too often lol
Unfortunately the V6 is no longer available, but for what it will cost to fix the melted 4 cylinder a guy could buy a lot of gas for the V8.

But, wouldn't you rather have a V8? I drove an ecoboost mustang 50th anniversary back in 2016 and the transmission felt so loose and sloppy. The converter was hardly ever locked up. It was kind of numb to drive and the engine and trans felt loose. However, the mustang GT of the same year was super nice. Great engine response. Converter locked up even at low speed to give it that instantaneous feel and engine feel through the pedals. All that stuff is important for the enjoyment. I wonder how this new one is in comparison.
Miles per gallon are way better than my 67 camaro, but idk about smiles per gallon
