There's a lot of people on the forums that have had bad experiences with turbo blankets. Exhaust housings cracking, or just the heat blanket eventually falling apart.
Just a disclaimer for people wanting to buy one.

You should build a thin piece of metal to block the reservoir and the hard lines from the heat. Did so for my buddies supercharged NA, then cover it in the gold heat reflective tape. Should help a bit.
You get a tighter wrap if you wet it before you put it on, and then it steams off when you turn it on, I have done this three times on my motorcycles and works like a charm

+Gingium Don't use sand paper! Use plastic abrasive because any other abrasive scratches metal and causes leaks

with your turbo blanket it's meant to be installed on your turbo so unbolt the exhaust housing from the turbo and exhaust and the holes in the blanket there's holes they line up with the bolts then reinstall turbo housing

Longitudinal is the right way round, front of the engine faces the front bumper. Transverse is what they use in an FF.
To round the exhaust heat management, take a look at the Swaintech TBC-EX coating for those two remaining cast parts. It's probably the best working thermal coating mere mortals can afford and it's insanely tough.

You should look to invest in a Quick Jack.. Kinda expensive but it'll replace your jack and jack stands.. Also easily moved around

That fwd car you speak of when talking about the engine and what it was designed for, was in fact the protege. and I suggest you consider buying one in the future. They're very very very fun cars to have and they're cheap to own too.
And you're making a mistake by using those screw on hose clamps, especially on that radiator. you could crack something since it's only one major pressure point, compared to the stock clamps.

The word you were looking for with the FWD engive configuration was Longitudinal. Which is actually how it is in your Miata, in FWD cars it's Transverse.

Hey Gingium, since you want to get into welding to fabricate your own parts, you should try making your own custom heat shield to protect the brake system or least the master cylinder.

I would invest in some Spongy floor mats to lay on while under the car. Yeah you have a creeper but some times you can use that.
