Call me again when you break the 6-speed buddy XD Also slight correction, 6th in the 6-speed is actually shorter than 5th in the 5-speed, so your cruise RPM will be slightly higher.
6th gear is 0.843 while the 5th gear on the 5-speed is 0.814, which isn't much and basically irrelevant for NB owners with the 3.9 differential but somewhat significant for NA/NB with the 4.1 or 4.3 diffs.
@@brentescovedo3262 It makes the same % difference no matter what the final drive is (in fact the 3.6% change in the final trans gear is almost as much as the 4.7% change of going from 4.3 to 4.1 diff) No it's not too significant, but many people think they'll be getting some kind of double overdrive with the install of a 6-speed which is far from the truth.

You get close gearing which makes a big difference when touging but still retain street drivability around town and on the the freeway. For autox though I find myself wishing 3rd gear was a little longer lol.

The trans should have a different connector. The NA 5 speed uses 2 banana plugs while the NB 6MT uses an connector a good way to fix that issue is to cut the female plunge from the trans and wire it to the NB one.
So, I was in the Miata game from a young high school age. I am still miataman at 38. My 90 1.6 fm ii powered miata lunched its original 4:30 rear diff. Bought a wrecked nearly new 99 10ae as a donor. I swapped the 3.9 rear and 6 speed into my turbo 1.6. I will tell you this...the 6 speed blew. Too much shifting. Pulled 6speed out and in went the 5 speed. The 5speed and 3.9 rear from 10ae was a a perfect combo. Just my .02 cents. Love seeing miata channels and owners doing cool things with mx5’s. Be safe

So they are a little bit different and the 6 speed is going to rev higher at the same speed in the final gear. For those that are curious The 6 speed gear ratios are: 3.76 - 2.269 - 1.645 - 1.257 - 1 - 0.843 respectively. While the 5 speed is: 3.136 - 1.888 - 1.33 - 1 - 0.814 respectively.

If you fit a 6 speed with a 3.6 ratio diff you'll end up with a 6th gear about 20% longer than a 5th on a 4.1 or 4.3 diff or so. This was the setup I went for, really was a nice ratio set with short 1-5 and a 6th that allowed 3250rpm odd at 70mph with 195/50/15 tyres

Yeah I've never understood why other Miata guys cry about this. I'd be going for a taller economy rear gear if I did a 6 speed swap. Especially with a turbo. Coming from the Mustang crowd it'd be like going from 4.30s to 3.90s or 3.73s. thatd make that 6th gear act like a nice highway gear while still giving you 5 good gears. Plus a taller rear gear would make it to where you weren't having to shift so fast.
I'm having the trans for my car repaired (by an expert). It's a two speed, so I feel your pain with highway RPM, but hey, matching numbers! Stoked to get it back, hopefully later this week or sometime next week. Guy had to send off the torque converter to be machined apart and rebuilt by a machine shop since it isn't a very common part, so I have a feeling that's what's taking so long (delivered it last Wednesday). Let me tell you, that sucker was DIR-TY. Actually will be in the Chicago area Saturday to get a front bench seat (Form a '67 Olds so it has the center armrest, but should fit a '66 Olds because they're both A-body) for the car. Once the trans is in, the front seat and some minor interior bits, and some paint corrections are left and it'll be literally factory!

You should think on install a longer ratio to take profit of the 6speed trans. On Europe we have ones with 3.6 ratio and maybe you can look for something aftermarket.

Gingium showing you can do pretty much anything on ordinary jack stands, even if it looks to be a really big pain it is possible, also I had a friend of mine that was scammed out of his 2JZ, shit sucks and you really have to watch your back (that was his replacement engine because Hurricane Harvey killed his VQ35)
The 6 speed does have shorter gears but keep in mind all of the 6 speed NBs came with taller gearing in their lsds. So with the full 6 speed drivetrain you will have lower cruising rpms in 6th gear.
Either trans will blow up at 150 whp if mechanical empathy is not used. 5 Speeds have lasted at 220 wtq (torque kills, not hp), because they were babied. Also NB 5-Speeds can be used in a pinch as their case design allows for a bit more power.
I was gonna say if you needed a spare vehicle I might have a “CHERRY” 2000 Ford Windstar available, don’t live too far away, but you got that knocked out pretty good. Nice job
I know you said it was a straight ‘drop in’, but just to be sure (before I tackle this upgrade myself) the same prop shaft from 5-speed fits perfectly?
And thats why you don't mod your daily lol. You need a reliable daily beater for those "just in case" moments like this. Should accelerate harder with the shorter gears. And good luck with the Drift truck.
I remember helping my brother’s friend put a new trans in. He did not have the right bolts or wrenches handy. So I was left there bench pressing the trans for several minutes while they were derping around. I’m pretty decently strong. But not strong enough so that it didn’t suck giant donkey nuts.
Short gears are going to make a WORLD of difference for the Miata I think. I drive an 04 STi and the short gears make the car insanely fast with only 330 wheel horsepower (for now) 😂😉
The six-speed might also feel better because it hasn't been getting sent too much power for several years. I somehow doubt that your five-speed was in perfect working order up until it lunched itself that spectacularly.

Are you sure your 5-speed wasn't shitting the bed for a while now, making the 6-speed seem much better in comparison? Every Miata purist ever ooh's and ahh's over the 5-speed but bags on the 6-speed. The 5-speed is consistently the best feeling shifter I've gotten to use.

I have an auto na miata and love it but would like to do a swap! I have heard it’s easy as 123 but I have never done it. Can you refer me to something or some blog that confirms this? And where can you get 6 speed from?
@gingium what diff ratio was you using? I believe I have a welded open 4.1 on a 1.8vvt turbo and I keep blowing 5 speed boxes. I’m around 267bhp as a drift car and it’s annoying having to keep chucking boxes at it so I’m thinking is it time for a 6 speed but I’m unsure on my diff ratio, I like the idea of a punchy reving car but the ratio might be to short to keep in boost drifting or not having a wide Rev range to play with 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️

You can drop your rear end ratio to get lower rpm in 6th and it would act like your five speed 1-5 but 6th would be a taller gear.

I’m around 267bhp as a drift car and it’s annoying having to keep chucking boxes at it so I’m thinking is it time for a 6 speed but I’m unsure on my diff ratio, I like the idea of a punchy reving car but the ratio might be to short to keep in boost drifting or not having a wide Rev range to play with 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
