Bodycam Shows Deputies Use Taser To Arrest Florida Highway Shooting Suspect

Sumter County, Florida - On June 27th around 6:24 in the evening the Sumter County Sheriff's Office began receiving calls in reference to shots fired on 1-75 NB near the 309 MM. Callers reported the suspect Miguel Espinoza Navarro, 41, was waving a gun and shooting at vehicles from a black Ford truck. The suspect rear ended a vehicle just north of MM 314 (Bushnell) and continued heading north on 1-75. The suspect then wrecked his vehicle at the guardrail at MM 317, where he engaged deputies in a standoff. The suspect began waving his gun, ultimately threw his weapon and took off again. A few hundred feet later the suspect wrecked for a third time, abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot. Deputies took to a foot chase, tased the suspect and successfully took him into custody. Navarro was booked into the Sumter County Jail on multiple charges, including aggravated assault and resisting an officer. No people or deputies were injured during the ordeal.

I can imagine being shot in a case like that must be a very bad situation that could be avoided. But in what case would shooting everyone that might be a danger to one result in a good decision?

But then you said something even more stupid... saying that you could clearly tell he was unarmed because he was wearing a loose t-shirt and boxers and he would’ve had to have hidden it very well and whatever else you said is not a valid argument at all. He could easily have had a gun or a knife hidden somewhere on him. What I would’ve said is that for the cop to say he’s unarmed, the cop must have been certain there were no weapons on him because prior to the video starting they might’ve done a search and he ran away who knows 🤷♂️. I’m sorry if I sounded rude but what you said was just completely wrong, and the officer wouldn’t have told his squad mates the guy was unarmed if he just looked like he was unarmed but didn’t know.

Very patient and situationally aware officers. Good communication as well. Sometimes the situation doesn't allow for this tactical patience but these gentlemen had the opportunity and seized it. Outstanding strong work officers.

@Andres Medina I'm glad they didn't shoot him, but he was far from no threat. With all those guns out, if that guy had been a more competent wrestler, or on a drug that made him strong and immune to pain, that could have been an extremely bad situation. From an accidental shooting due to the wrestling, to him trying and possibly succeeding at getting his hands on one of their guns. I give the officers an A+ for restraint.

No that was actually pretty successful use of a taser, also dude def wasnt armed when he was charging police even the last POV says "Hes not Armed use a Taser", so all in all pretty good use of that device. Source on this is ive been through Taser training, and have deployed one around 8 or 9 times in my 3 year career.

I am French, and here police don’t kill you immediately if they feel threatened: it goes with their job if you are too scared for your life and no wanting to take risk you need to do something else. Because in France for example, they don’t shoot 10 bullets in your head if you sit in your car and reach for your cellphone or even for a knife. I agree, but with this particular instance, with an unarmed suspect, it looks like the suspect was taken into custody without having to fire a shot, potentially killing someone that didn't need to be. At no point did it look like the officers could have feared for their life. The suspect is an idiot and shouldn't have charged at the cops like that, but I think there's value in the fact that no one was killed that day.

CNN: Man stated there were bees and tried to run towards cops for safety and was met with firearms to the face.
This was an extremely dangerous situation for the officers. Reports of an armed man in a Ford, then the police show up witnessing him brandishing a fire arm, then he threw it and kept acting crazy, and then decided to run up to them (not knowing for sure if he is still armed). Luckily the officer's hesitancy didn't get them killed.
If only he had enough stamina, he could've rolled and dodged the taser, and made his escape...
