Suspect Fires 2 Guns Simultaneously During Shootout With Police

Moses Lake, Washington - On May 4, 2024, at around 8:20 p.m., officers with the Moses Lake Police Department responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at the Motel 6 in Moses Lake. Body camera footage shows the suspect, 37-year-old Zachary Allen Stockton, locking himself in a room. According to a probable cause affidavit, Stockton had threatened to kill his girlfriend for allegedly cheating on him and allegedly pointed the barrel of a gun at her chest. During the confrontation, the victim managed to message or call someone from her phone, directing them to contact 911. Moses Lake Police Sgt. Adam Munro was the first to arrive at the scene with Officer Todd Taylor in tow.
The footage shows Sergeant Munro attempting to negotiate with the suspect, pleading with him not to shoot. Almost immediately after, Stockton exited the motel room with two guns and opened fire at police. Multiple rounds of shots were fired from Stockton until both Sgt. Munro and Ofc. Taylor returned fire, hitting Stockton and incapacitating him. He was then taken into custody. Stockton was treated at a hospital and was later jailed in Grant County. According to court documents, Stockton is being held without bail and faces three counts of first-degree assault, one count of second-degree assault and unlawful possession of a firearm. A vehicle used for cover during the incident was found to have eight bullet holes, attributed to shots fired by Stockton.
During the incident, Sgt. Munro was shot through the foot. He had surgery Sunday and is recovering. Sgt. Munro has been with the Moses Lake Police Department for 14 years. He is a firearms instructor and a former member of the regional SWAT team. Sgt. Munro is also a veteran of the United States Air Force. Ofc. Taylor has been with the Moses Lake Police Department for six years. He serves as a field training officer. Prior to working for MLPD, Ofc. Taylor worked at the Grant County Jail for 15 years. He is a United States Marine Corps veteran.

I see these clips, and I go back to the years of police training and watching these types of videos. What strikes me is even with multiple wounds suspects are living more and more.
Yes, trauma surgery Has gotten leaps and bounds better since the GWOT. But suspects are often sustaining +10 rounds to the thorax and surviving. The only time they succumb is if the officers wait for multiple other officers with shields or SWAT to arrive with their APC.
It just seems like center mass hits are less effective since departments went back to 9mm.

they have to act that way now to keep a pension...It's no longer noble service and protection, it's just a 9-5 job. They have been neutered and devalued. They have next to NO support from either side politically. A lot of it is their own doing but SOME is unfair and we need to just realize this is the new American police officer. Within 10 years, you'll hear an officer say "please, I don't wanna hurt you sir, just come out and I will give you a cookie and drop all charges!" Again, I blame police for abusing their power for too many decades but I also blame our fellow countrymen for becoming embarassing and weak on crime. He was only charged with assault? He should’ve be charged with two counts of attempted first degree murder on a police officer!
Read other comments. 1st degree assault can carry the same penalties as attempted murder, but prosecutors don't have to prove intent with the assault charge. It's easier to get a conviction.

The cop def paid attention in his training, or is just naturally empathic and verbally well spoken.
Saying "hands empty" still implies that there can be a peaceful resolution. No laws have been broken and a civil conversation can be had. The officer just needs to know they are not a threat since a the subject admitted that he was holding a weapon. The cop was asking, almost begging, the subject to listen and cooperate.
Saying "hands in the air" implies that the subject is deemed dangerous. It is a aggressive phrase meant to convey that you obey all commands or will be dealt with as a threat. Even after obeying you will still be treated as dangerous until confined and immobilized. Cops will say this when they know for certainty the subject is a dangerous threat.

They might have done it to ensure that the charges stick and make an easier case to argue in court for the state prosecuting attorney. They still can suggest the max sentence which is probably pretty close, if not equal to what it would be for attempted murder anyway. You can’t charge someone twice bc that would violate double jeopardy. So if u charge him with attempted murder, and he beats that case bc u couldn’t prove that he had intent to kill (he could argue he just wanted to ‘scare’ the cops- then it’s your word vs his), then this guy walks free. You can’t then go back after that and say “ok now we’re going to try u for assault with a deadly weapon and see if that sticks since attempted murder didn’t stick.” He’s already been tried. So whatever he’s charged with, u gotta make damn sure it’s something u can prove in court or else the guy could walk free.
This happened on May 4th so these are the initial charges that are meant to keep him in jail while the DA processes the rest which is pretty standard.

It's an example of how de-escalation is suppose to work. Even if the suspect chose violence in the end, everyone came out alive because the cop kept his cool and controlled the situation instead of becoming part of the problem.
The officer's primary concern should have always been the suspect.
If you hit the off switch on the suspect, all the other problems magically just kind of go away.
Civilians are no longer in danger, the officers are no longer in danger, and medics can come in to do their jobs.

It never ceases to amaze me how these guys fire all those rounds & never hit what they're shooting at.
It's because rapid fire of a handgun is the most inaccurate fire mode there is. The slightest deviation in barrel angle sends the round so far off target it's not funny. Especially at distance.
Handguns are close range weapons and are hard to aim. Rifles are much more accurate over moderate to long distances and much easier to aim.

Might need a Grand Jury to level those charges in WA, maybe someone from there knows? Also, it's harder to prove A.M. versus simple assault because you have to be able to prove a suspect's mindset and intention in court, not just their actions.
1st degree Assault with a deadly weapon is basically the same sentencing but they don't have to prove intent so it's easier for the court to convict someone.

Except he escalated the whole thing. He pushed the gun issue instead of the fact that the crime supposedly committed wasn’t something that requires lock up. He could have told the guy, “hey man, just leave the gun in the room, come tell me your side of the story, it’s only a misdemeanor so I issue court summons for three months from now and you are back to eating your BBQ in ten minutes and I’m writing a report then back to giving speeding tickets in half an hour. No big deal.”
Nope, he pushed the guy to make a different kind of decision by making it an all or nothing right now….. instead of “put down the gun come get a ticket and be eating BBQ in ten” he said “put down your gun and come out now.” No benefit for putting down the gun, no minimalising what the negatives will be, just DO WHAT I SAY…. They carry the same penalty as attempted murder and they are much easier to prove in court.. makes much more sense
They will only be able to prove second degree attempted murder so first degree assault would give him more jail time
2nd attempted murder up to 15 yrs. and first degree assault up to 99 yrs.

People don't understand that you go with the charge that is most easiest to prove without any doubt. In most cases whether its attempted murder or Aggravated Assault with a deadly weapon, it still yields the same punishment i.e. 1st degree or 2nd degree its just the verbiage is diff. I am a cop so I deal with this stuff daily regarding charges etc.
