No. A frickin’ SPOTLIGHT was being shown on those cars. Only the truckers knew (or bothered) to use their hazard lights. So, shall we count the self-absorbed idiots most likely staring at their phones? 🤦♂️
You are absolutely correct. People go to fast and don't leave enough room between them and the car in front of them. Also no one has their hazards on either. That dude in the pink shirt who was just walking around was being very stupid. Don't ever do that. I lived in LA for a decade and people drive 70 to 80 mph with just a few meters between them. Very bad idea.
If you haven’t been in this situation I wouldn’t talk. Some definitely looked careless others just cruised into it . It doesn’t even look like a well lit area. Someone should’ve stopped before it got past 2 cars and just had hazards infront of them
Why isn’t anyone pulling over??? In Canada someone would help as soon as they saw a damaged vehicle with injured civilians inside. RIP to everyone that died.
These drivers are idiots… None of them were paying attention, not to mention braking last minute, swerving into other lanes or cars. This is exactly why you should always be aware of your surroundings and keep a good distance between you and the car in front of you.
Yeah but I can’t blame em. Some were probably driving for hours. When I travel, I drive for days at a time. You’re bound to slip up every once in a while. Not to mention it’s EXTREMELY dark and the crashed vehicles have NO lights on. It would be ridiculously hard to see them when you’re going 80 mph even if they WERE paying attention. Regardless, I do agree.
People in place that don't get snow, as well as young drivers and generally unhinged drivers(we have a lot of both here in Iowa), act like such idiots, and will often go faster in snowy and icy conditions than they normally would in clear conditions, just because they feel like it. And to nobodies suprise, they get in crashes. For reference, I drive a light, lowdown car, and I still have to apply the brakes a bare minimum of 3 seconds before a lot of people in places without snow would even consider the idea of slowing down, and it can be worse(3 seconds may seem like a small amount of time, but vehicles going at the speeds I go normally take just barely over a second to stop after the brakes have been applied). People with SUVs just straight up cannot stop in time, making it all the more infuriating that they are the most common type of vehicle here, and just being terrifying for all parties. I've actually had a case where at least a good 5 seconds passed and my car was still moving, having traveled around a block since I started applying the brakes, and bringing me right up to, or seemingly slightly jutting into the busy road ahead, with me backing up as soon as possible, and only narrowly avoid getting hit by a truck. And that was with me going ~23 to begin with. Snow is no joke.
What scares me the most about being a new driver is, you can try be as safe as you want.. but there are idiots on the road that clearly don't pay attention.
You have to be constantly looking around at how others are driving. Even if you’re just coasting fine down the highway, still look in your mirrors every so often.
If you’re in a situation where everyone is putting on their brake lights on the highway and you don’t think to slow down and pay attention you deserve to lose your license to be honest
Yeah seriously, most of the time it's a good indicator that there's a speed trap up ahead but nonetheless I don't know how these people DIDN'T notice a multitude of cars in the middle of the highway with everyone approaching them hitting their brakes.
thats assuming they're paying attention in the first place. To be fair it's night and the cars didnt have their hazards on, but the drivers hat plowed right into the cars probably weren't paying attention for quite a long time. There shouldve been plenety of time to at least try to slow down
Yes that's why I'll never ride a motorcycle. Doesn't matter how good a driver you are all it takes is one idiot to swerve in your lane or back out of a driveway without looking and you're dead.
This is what scares me everytime I get behind the wheel. It doesn’t matter how safe of a driver you are, there will always be a careless driver around to hit you.
Ok but why do you say that? In this case its clearly the first guys fault. If his car broke down he should have turned on all 4s and put a triangle sign. People going over 100mph in the dark, of course they will hit him if he's just standing on highway.
@@almironsalke3572 it's legit everyone's fault. If you hit a person clearly not moving you are an idiot. You have headlights you should be able to see him. And even then the one video taping the crash has a damn spotlight on the car to illuminate them. You are watching the road if you hit that car simply put
Every driver who didn't hit their hazard light button... "you know the big bright RED 🔺️ button" I'm willing to bet 100$ they're the same drivers who don't ever use the turn signal either 🤨🤨
In Europe, literally EVERYONE turns on their hazard warning lights in the event of an accident, traffic jam or broken down car on the highways. Day or night. 365 days a year.
(Person living in LA here). People in Los Angeles are NOTORIOUSLY bad drivers. People need to get off the phone, stop texting, if you’re gonna smoke weed or drink, call an Uber. You don’t need to be doing 90MPH in a 65MPH. You’ll get to where you’re going. More than half the cars that drove past this wreck either were speeding past and didn’t slow down at all or hit one of the two cars. Absolutely insane how some people drive.

California is dealing with these self-entitled demobrat minded drivers that assert they shouldn't have to be cautious, while they REFUTE accountability of safe driving practices. Surprising how many of those drivers didn't put on their hazard lights. Even after passing and seeing the accident, it should be courtesy to put them on as a warning to vehicles behind you!
yep, Hazard lights are used for all sorts of reasons here in Japan. And its a chain reaction, if you see them on in another car, you turn yours on as well. It seems Californians don't know their purpose...

This would have never happened in Germany and I tell you why. In Germany people have to do 2 seperate exams to get the drivers license, also it takes a minimum of 30 hours of pure driving to be accepted for the driving exam. Furthermore we learn how to do what is called a Rettungsgasse and when there is an accident everyone uses their warning lights to signal to slow down. Then also when an accident happens and you get the chance as the driver, you have to put up reflecting triangle on the road 200m from the accident so people know somethings ahead and they need to watchout. Also, as soon as someone would have an accident people would turn their fucking engines down and stop in front to help and so nobody can pass and you have a clear warning sign with a still standing car that has flashing lights on. Its called unterlassene Hilfeleistung or Fahrerflucht to just carry on and drive away, which equals, failure to provide help and can be fined with imprisonment.
@@ennesb.4053 Was going to comment about how no one who came upon the scene turned on their emergency flashers to warn cars behind that something was happening- not sure why drivers on this side of the pond are so afraid to use them...weird. All those in the accident should have to reapply for a license. Also, the drivers license should have a minimum reactionary time requirement simulating something like this.
The biggest problem is there are a lot of people getting off a long shift from work and being exhausted behind the wheel. To prove my point go inside a Tesla Model Y or even the latest Model 3 from a long shift and watch those warning sensors go off. @@AwesomeBlackDude I could be drunk stoned jerking off picking my nose tying my shoe and eating a sandwich after being awake for 20 hours and still see stopped cars sideways on a highway and slow down accordingly lmao
I can tell you from experience that driving at highway speed at night is not as easy as it looks. I once drove on a highway and there was a couch that fell from a semi and was laying in the middle of the highway. I couldnt see it until it was too late. I was lucky enough to be in the lane next to it. If I wasn’t, I would have crashed. Unfortunately, a lady was not so lucky. She crashed into the couch and spun out of control. Luckily she was ok but the couch destroyed her car. There’s a reason we have hazard lights. Non of the vehicles in the spot of the accident had their hazard light on.
What gives me chills is how silent and still the cars were after the wreck. You know someone in there is hurt or worse in an instant. Genuinely chilling.
@@farrier2708 Yeah, totally... Like "mhh, let's see what happens next..." I know he can't do much because it's too dangerous. But maybe I would have used my smartphone torch and waved it back and forth to make people more alert from afar...

Not only am I shocked at the complete lack of awareness from most drivers, but the not driving to the conditions (weather), and that rarely anyone put their hazard lights on to warn others. Instead just driving or swerving past and carrying on.
In 14 years as a Police Officer, I saw some really sad vehicle fatalities, including decapitated teens. You have to get your kids and get far far away from your vehicle. Even if you make it to the shoulder or the median and out of the travel lane, DO NOT stay in the vehicle. Get out and get 25 yards away from it if you can. It's a death trap
Everyone (just about) in the comment section wants to know if you care to elaborate on the decapitated teen specifics? I already know your question; Nothing is wrong with us, normal is a fantasy.
It amazes me that no one, beginning with the driver of first crashed car, left their hazard lights on! That’s driving 101. And it would have surely prevented many of the crashes to happen
He was probably drunk. He didn’t stick around to be held accountable or explain why his car was in the middle of the freeway…he fled the scene on foot.
As a German I'm speechless, first thing we learn in the exam with accidents on the autobahn is to get behind the barrier, second to warn the oncoming traffic and third to help people in need. This whole mess would have been avoidable.
Sadly, that wouldn't have been enough. These people most likely aren't paying any attention to the road. They are most likely paying attention to their phones. There was no reason with that little traffic for that many cars to run into that. Additionally, most people don't know how to drive defensive. Plan where you're going to move to if something goes wrong. Being aware of other drivers and what they may or may not do, etc
I suspect the test in Germany is a lot more stringent that the US equivalent - I would not like to be sharing the road with half trained drivers (a bit like the US police force).
This could never happen in any european country. If this happen here there would be multiple drivers stopped near and asking them if they need help even after the first accident. Instead of that we see at least 10 vehicles barely avoiding the crash, 4 cars totaled and a nightcrawler videotaping the whole incident for some youtube views. Unbelievable.
I got my license in Italy in 1982 and when I moved to the US and needed the American one I walked into a DMV only to get infos on how to get it, I walked out with the permit after taking the test not even knowing the language that well, that how easy it was. Most American drivers do not belong behind the wheel.
@hurricane watcher Yes, that will work with your Spanish-speaking insurance adjuster if they have it. Let me get this straight. A car on the side of the road is warning approaching drivers by shining a spotlight on wreckage and people are looking at his car instead of the wreckage? Man, the court room would erupt in laughter if you were on the stand. I surmise you're one of the low motor vehicle IQ drivers? How long have you been on staycation? I'm beginning to think that hurricane watching is not a healthy endeavor for you...
Unbelievable how many United State's Citizen's/14th Amendment Slaves are "disconnected" from their rights, period. Why does Los Angeles have so many "Drivers" who aren't getting paid by the state for having a license? The word "driver" is a commercial term that very few of you actually understand. Stop being a "driver" and start to exercise your right to travel in your PRIVATE Automobiles. I despise the word "driver" when none of you actually are. Who are you being paid by to "drive" your car?
Most drivers (the mob factor also rules here - all do drive like this, so this is a way to do it) do not follow/keep the distance according to the law - the distance should be enough to brake safely if need be, period.
Don’t forget it’s Cali. Weed like CRAZY here. I stopped taking Uber on nights out when I knew I would be drinking because every other driver I got their vehicle REEKED of weed and they were obviously high and talking slow as a mf. I had to cancel and re request so many rides because I was scared to be a passenger!!! The amount of people high driving on the roads here is probably some terrifyingly high numbers 😖
It amazes me that none of the drivers who almost hit the crashed cars turned their hazards on to at the very least let people know something is going on there.
Things like this in LA are so rare that you never even really consider them as a possibility. You’re kind of focused on other hazards. Traffic is usually so dense that there’s almost no chance anything would be stationary on the freeway. If there’s an accident, traffic comes to a halt. This situation where there’s an accident and traffic is still moving? Yeah, this doesn’t happen. When you live somewhere that has more intense weather and/or significantly less traffic, you are then much more aware of things like this being a possibility because it’s not uncommon. When I’m in a town where it’s snows and it’s winter, I’m extra vigilant of stopped cars and road conditions. In LA, my mind is focused on other drivers way more than road conditions, because the road conditions are 99.99% fine.
@@CookieCurls ok, first, you must not have lived in LA that long or something. I'm from SoCal and have seen things like this before at night, so no, it's not rare. @@CookieCurls that should not be an excuse, using the hazard lights when approaching dead stop traffic is also necessary to warn the others. + your senses are quick enough for that
What are you talking about? It's night time, therefore, it's dark out. The cars don't have headlights on, clearly they've been destroyed. It's an expressway, so there aren't street lights every 20 feet & cars are easily going anywhere from 60 to 75 mph, so not much time to see & slow down, stop, or swerve. Not to mention, if you do, you're either gonna hit someone or the guy behind you is gonna rear end you. It's weird that i feel the need to explain this.
@@1w598 if you actually look in front of you and you see the spotlight on that first car and cars on the shoulder you should slow down right of the bat. where I live everybody is slowing down and using the hazards lights when something like this happens. In this LA video noone gave a fuck, only 1 truck driver used it
As with every other car part, brakes wear out throughout use and needs paying to be replaced. The insanity to me is how many people were absolutely flying into this situation when there is CLEARLY a ton of commotion and red lights (from braking) that you should take notice of as a driver and slow down so you can better react to an unknown situation. The amount of bad driving here is kinda insane. I don’t know if it’s not paying attention, or just refusing to drive safely.

Yeah what about the cameraman And the reporter who are just standing there reporting it and not helping to stop cars they're filming cars crashing into them and doing nothing about it I would arrest both of them
❌ driving too fast ❌ tailgating ❌ not slowing down when you see others activate their hazard lights ❌ not activating your own hazard lights when you see a hazard so many basic safety procedures that were ignored here 🤦
Exactly! No instead people want to speed up because someone is slowing or braking instead of them also slowing or breaking, or maybe thinking ok maybe something is ahead of them. No ,it's speed up get around them and this happens. 100% this all could have been avoided.
That's why in Spain at least ,is obligated to put a crash triangle signal about 100 meters before the accident ,everyone has to have one in the car by law
What an asinine comment. The car had just been hit. How would this signal even be put out in the road? If the other drivers can’t see multiple cars on the road, they aren’t going to see one person walking 100 meters into oncoming traffic.
I was looking for a comment like this. We Italians are quite infamous for ignoring the speed limits but everytime we pass by a crash scene 90% of the cars will put they hazard lights on. Here it is less than 10% instead, I am sure that makes a huge difference in preventing distracted drivers hitting a stalled car.
We do that in Dubai , UAE as well when we hit sudden traffic on highway . It's the most simplest way to notify the drivers behind to slow down immediately !
Here in Brazil, after the first accident happened, the first following cars would stop with their hazard lights turned on, then all cars would see which lanes are free to continue.
As someone who spends considerable time on the highway, this doesn’t surprise me in the least. Easily 50% of drivers have absolutely zero business behind the wheel. Unless this was on a blind curve, which it doesn’t appear to be, there is no way you shouldn’t see this wreck from a ways out and begin slowing down.
The vehicles that are immobilized failed to make sure their vehicles were visible with neither lights nor emergency four-way flashers turned on. That’s incredible degree of negligence. Worse yet, the driver of the first car makes no apparent effort to move his vehicle out of the traffic lane.

In 1983, my late grandpa once parked his semi directly behind a car with 3 kids in the backseat that had blown a tire and was still partially on the road, and immediately ordered the pregnant lady and kids (her niece and nephews) out of the car and walked them off the road to safety. Less than 2 minutes later a snowplow driver not paying attention rammed into the back of his truck (no trailer) at 60+mph, totalling both vehicles. It's night and it appears the 1st vehicle was partially in the lane. Traffic is moving along at highway speed. A car's lights only have a range of a few feet. Plus the area wasn't well lit at all. What bothers me is that the officer sat there and made no effort to put out flares, cones, or redirect traffic.
Even if it's night this sorta thing never happens in India as what I have seen! No matter how dark it is people still are cautious and aware while driving & they even jump out on the highway just to help people involved in the crash!

Honestly It's all fun and games until each one of us visits one of our beloved relatives and fly by plane or train for that matter. It happens to out of towners in LA and every other town. Its good to have a rest stop at night for sure.
The most interesting part of this video is how well it shows how little more than 50% of drivers pay attention to the road and how little they look far ahead.
And this is in one of the better driving American cities! Driving all over this country is just horrible. Californians think they have horrible drivers, clearly they've never been to DC, Boston, Miami, Baltimore, Nashville. Midwestern cities like Chicago or Detroit are much like this, where people seem to be staying in the lines, using turn signals, and following the rules, but in reality they're speeding more then they can actually handle because everyone else on the road is, not paying attention, and if a crisis like this happened they wouldn't know what to do any better than the drivers in this video. Drinking and driving or drugged driving is very very common, we pretend like it's some sort of social taboo but really the vast majority of people coming back from a party do it. Nobody actually calls Uber, and the host can't stop them if they just walk out the door unannounced. And they get away with it until they don't. They can stay within the lines and stop for red lights, but put an unexpected situation in front of them and they'll just crash without even trying to brake. After dinnertime, a double-digit percentage of drivers on the road are drunk, later at night it goes up to like a third.
It's insane how few people have any foresight while driving. Some people really can't pay attention to anything past the tip of their noses. Idk if these mfs are driving blind or just plain stupid but this is scary to see.
Let me save the frustration for you all.. this will never change. The amount of low patience, tailgating, speeding, and lack of attention span some drivers have will never go away. That's why you should always just watch out for yourself. It doesn't matter if you're a good driver at all. What matters is how many idiot drivers are around you.
You're 100% correct on that and that's why I'm getting out of the driving business. It was bad before cell phones and now it's incredibly bad. We've been making cars safer for well over a hundred years and during that time nobody's ever thought to make a safer driver.
Agreed, I worked food delivery part time for 2 years before I started my major in college, I'm still doing temp work in delivery but I'm ready to get out, too many unpredictable situations and drivers, although I've only been driving for a little under 4 years I like to think I'm a relatively good driver, 90% of not getting in an accident is not being around distracted, impaired, or legitimately stupid drivers, 5% avoiding animals, and 5% not being an idiot yourself. They're too many are bad drivers out there, hell I once saw the aftermath of a single car accident, the guy managed to flip his car upside down on a flat street, how the hell do you manage that?
@@jovesheerwater there was a massive light shining onto the wreck which also caused reflection off of the car bumpers. Pretty fucking easy to avoid. No sympathy for those that crashed after

I think the person camming is a cop, even you could tell the radio chatter and the spotlight. I think 911 was already on scene. This guy probably knows there's gonna be an accident because of this, if someone is on the force long enough to tell something bad will happen you know him pulling out the camera is a sign.
@@battlefennec No, he ends up calling the cops later on in the video. He doesn't speak like one. He'd also do a better job of directing a scene right then, on or off the clock. He's just the video boy. Not helpful in the slightest, not even his dinky spotlight. TBH, he probably unintentionally distracted other drivers, because they're having to watch for this guy with his car & spotlight on the side of the road. It takes a glance to watch out for him, and just that glance can be enough to miss what's right in front of them. Cammer had the amateur's bloodlust. A professional would've posted up elsewhere up the road to best not endanger themselves or others.
You can see at the beginning of the video the person was shingling a spotlight on to the car to try and warn people. He also had his hazards on as it says in the description.
In germany we're pretty much taught "when there's an accident, approach it with your hazard lights on to warn everyone behind you".. literally no one did that here and I am just shocked by that. What in the world else do you think you have the hazard lights in your car for?
I think one car did turn their hazards on tho. However in America nobody would know what that means lol. In fact it means speed around the car with the hazards to most.
@@mimeeeh if memory serves, a multiple choice questionnaire/test, about 6 hours of "driver's education" which amounts to driving around some local street, a few hours of lecture, and then its another 15 minutes of driving around more local streets with a DMV worker who (depending on their mood) may fail or pass you. No need to learn how to parallel park, nor demonstrate any sort of knowledge of situational awareness, or the ability to accurately control the vehicle. This is the reason why this video exists and Germany has the autobahn. But i suspect that the insurance companies are lobbying to keep it this way because bad drivers = higher insurance prices = good for business.
No you're taught that in the USA. In the situation it should've only been a 1 car crash but California's laws and some people's below average IQ and awareness made this bigger than it was

The "nightcrawler" diverted the other drivers attention by having his hazards on. If he really wanted to help and not create havoc, he should have gotten behind the disabled car. These scumbags don't make money on a broke down car in the middle of the freeway. I've seen them do this multiple times in different videos.
Clear night? I mean it's not heavy dense fog but there is definitely some slight fog. You can see it from the beam of light, the sky, and the opposite traffic's glow of lights. Them pointing these bright lights probably blinded the drivers. There's a reason you don't use your highbeams on foggy nights. On top of that theyre using decommissioned cop cars? It looked like they had emergency lights on their cars. If anything they were probably confusing and distracting the drivers thinking the accident had pulled over to the side of the freeway. Always call 911 if you're in an accident on the freeway and can't move your car over safely, STAY IN THE DAMN CAR (unless it's on fire) and keep your emergency lights on if possible. I hope everyone made it out okay in that accident.
See how the truckers immediately started using their hazards? If you see a crash blocking the road, even if you're on the side of the road, use the hazards. If you see hazards, turn them on your own car as well.
This guy was sitting behind the wreck, with his hazards on, taking video, as he funneled cars, getting over because they see him, right into the others. Notice how few the number of cars coming up in the right lane? That's why. They got over because of HIM!
Agree when I see an elderly, handicapped or anyone person crossing a crosswalk without standard stop lights I come to a stop and apply my hazard lights it really helps out

Sure it may increase your chance of survival, but there’s ALWAYS risk. Some people reading this will one day end up in a video that’s not allowed on RUclips.
Speed was a factor in this case, but you cannot tell what speed the vehicles were doing. It’s impossible not to drive “fast”, eg: motorway speeds. It’s more dangerous to drive slower with wagons overtaking you. The driver awareness was the main cause of these accidents. Fuckin horrific how bad the driving was in this video, is this generally the level of American driving ability or is this just a bad take?
The minute you see red lights up ahead of you, you should start to brake. These are the very same drivers that travel 20 mph over the speed limit in snow, at night, wearing sunglasses.

Even if you make it to the shoulder or the median and out of the travel lane, DO NOT stay in the vehicle. Get out and get 25 yards away from it if you can. It's a death trap

Wow this is unbelievable we really gotta pay attention while driving and adjust to the road conditions in case of an accident like this
Obviously, when most drivers in danger and will not use Hazard warning lights, I only saw a truck driver doing so.
A few Prii, too.
Yup
And an Infiniti sedan.
Big trucks are trained to use 4 ways that’s a universal sign of danger ahead.
It's a highway.. That's what people do
The most interesting part of this video is how well it shows how little more than 50% of drivers pay attention to the road and how little they look far ahead.
A very good point. One of the first things they should teach on driving school is to look at the farest point ahead to where you are heading.
I simply do my best to avoid a lot of driving. Get to a place and stay a while.
That's call experience.
It's insane how few people have any foresight while driving. Some people really can't pay attention to anything past the tip of their noses. Idk if these mfs are driving blind or just plain stupid but this is scary to see.
This needs to be shown to new drivers and anyone doing defensive driving courses. Especially people who text and drive!

That's why you should always just watch out for yourself. It doesn't matter if you're a good driver at all. What matters is how many idiot drivers are around you.
People need to turn their flashers on, man.
You're 100% correct on that and that's why I'm getting out of the driving business. It was bad before cell phones and now it's incredibly bad. We've been making cars safer for well over a hundred years and during that time nobody's ever thought to make a safer driver.

Speeding is not the cause of this. Driving distracted is the cause.
It’s better to arrive late than never.
It often times doesn’t matter how fast you drive. In many videos online you can see people in car accidents and getting cut in two, beheaded, skinned alive, crushed, etc etc. People think that “driving safe” will save you.
