I’m trying to wrap my DIY brain around how 1 man can maneuver all the equipment up and down invisible stories in the chateau, video it all…in one day. It’s like you have super powers. Mind blown.
He has a winch he showed us the other day.
Your one amazing man, please be careful, you are precious man needed and loved.❤
Yes, Dan has superior mental strengths !
I think he has learned not to show all the hair raising experiences and balanced acts and he leaves it to us to figure it out😀
The Greek philosopher, Archimedes, said, “Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world.” Modern day people forget what was built with levers and block and tackle. But all of this is made easier with the captured force of electricity.
I think a safety harness is in order in case of a fall. They don't cost much and are well worth it.
Yes as well as safety glasses and gloves.
Please Dan. Safety first.
Strapped to what? The tallest most stable thing in the Cháteau was the tree growing in the middle of it…and they chopped that down! 😅
Yes, especially because he there working alone
Dan is going to do what he wants I just grit my teeth and watch. 😂
Does anyone want to take a guess at how many times Dan has and will clean that main floor?
You certainly have more than a fair share of determination, Dan.
The higher you go, the more nerve-wracking it is to watch .
Love the toilet tree pot.
I thought he needs a debris funnel of some sort directly into a wheelbarrow or bin
I really wish he had a broom. The leaf blower is fun, but all that grit blowing into his electronics…
@@Tretz624 yes I noticed it appeared dust and crud was falling down on his camera/tripod?
Needs a lesson in how to avoid rework!
canvas floor covering
Spears of death banished and a lovely tree toilet to boot!
Fabulous, as usual - you and your work. So, okay, we've watched your efforts in awe, but now I must agree with other comments. It's time for a harness. It takes only a ten foot fall to be fatal, less if you injure your head. Human hearts are not designed to withstand the impact of a long drop and impact on cement. We want to see a successful, happy ending to this massive project. More importantly, you and your boys need you to remain intact. Please, Dan, be wise and be safe. ❤
I agree it's better to stay safe.
I see Dan is moving about with more precaution in this vlog.
Yes, please wear a harness and GLOVES!
And a helmet!
But what will he attach the harness too?
The higher you go the scarier it gets Dan Daily 😧 Keep safe 🤞
It’s getting scarier as you get higher! The brick walls look ready to tumble. Please be careful Dan, there’s a lot of people who care about you nervously watching on. 🫣
Ok, I know you didn’t fall today, because the video is edited and uploaded, but I was praying for you today, Dan. Please stay safe do you can see your project completed one day.
I pray every day I see your video and like it that you stay safe and don’t get hurt. God bless you and keep you safe.
Definitely pretty cool seeing that old clock movement, being that I work on them lol
I wondered if that was a clock! But then I thought it looked sort of industrial, not like a clock in a house. But it's an oldie. So what do I know!?! 🤗
@@winmarfbd909 I can’t blame you for thinking that, the inner workings of a clock as far as just simple time keeping goes is pretty simple, but when you start adding various features such as striking, they start to become more complicated and very complex looking haha. That being said, that one looks to have been a striking clock, I can tell because of the gong on the back (the coiled piece of steel wire) and the two key holes in the front. (One for winding the time train, and the other key hole for winding the striking train.) granted, it would be a lot of work, but I would say that movement would be viable for restoration, Ive seen some pretty crusty ones brought back to life. EDIT: forgot to add this, but with the addition of it being a striking clock, it was most likely French in origin, probably from the mid-1800s, although I could be wrong, looks like the minute hand is held on with a taper pin, which is indicative of its age. I’m almost willing to say that it may have had an enamel dial also, but it was obviously destroyed by the fire.
@@thewatchworks1372 Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed and, I think, exciting reply! Another relic from the chateau takes on a bit of life again. Amazing you can tell all of that from the video! Again, thanks for sharing with an old lady in Michigan. 🧡👋
@@winmarfbd909 No problem!😁
It sometimes hard to believe sometimes there is someone that has so much tenacity, energy, and perseverance to carry on like you do. Carry on ,young man , it is marvelous.
My hearts in my mouth seeing you on the edge of that platform and climbing that ladder! Be careful.
Scarey when you are there on your own when you are climbing so high!
My thoughts exactly. Lol, I really wish he would use safety equipment. My mom heart can't take it.😂😂😂
I love your enthusiasm. Ditto your energy. Your sense of humour is entertaining. Your vision is inspiring.
Your attention to safety, or lack thereof is somewhat worrying. I like some of the safety ideas and suggestions in the comments.
I love watching you slowly bring the chateau back to life. She is a beauty.
Wasn’t it typical that the higher the floors the less ceiling height? Servants usually housed in the top floor and weren’t given the comforts of the home owners.
I just can't believe what you have achieved so far. It is really incredible!! But, you make me so nervous up there without a safety harness or something. Maybe Nick could lend you one. ❤
Strapped to what? The tallest most stable thing in the Cháteau was the tree growing in the middle of it…and they chopped that down! 😅harness are dangerous dangling there they cut off the blood supply; without proper training there as bad as the fall.
Amazing what you achieved (almost single handedly) in a relatively short time. I can’t imagine seeing a place in that shape and having the fortitude to say I can bring it back. Congratulations and be safe!
Thank you Dan
Dan:”Well I’ll work it out.” 😂❤
Love it when Dan removes any plants growing in or on the building..Looking forward to see a temporary ruff and stairs in the future.
Dan you got to get yourself some safety glasses. I am always amazed at all the stuff you’re dealing with. The dust and dirt and debris shoveling sweeping and blowing around. Love seeing you use the respirator, but your eyes are just as important as your lungs. One stray chunk of debris in your eye could be devastating. I know you probably get tired of us all hen pecking you about safety, but we want to have you be around to finish this and keep us entertained. ❤😊
PLEASE!!
And a pair of gloves. All that stuff he touches and with the sharp pieces.
I agree!!!! Question is, will Dan take all our suggestions on board.
@@sophiapappas2217 no he won’t. According to a comment I read recently, Dan thinks gloves are for wimps. He likes to see evidence of his work at the end of a day.😮 Also, WHAT would we comment about if we were not asking Dan to be more safety conscious? It all helps towards the algorithm.😊
A safety strap is inexpensive and could save one a trip to the emergency room if lucky, or worse if unlucky. You’ve got some serious stones Dan, stay safe. And a fine bit of video recording and a great soundtrack as always!
Strapped to what? The tallest most stable thing in the Cháteau was the tree growing in the middle of it…and they chopped that down! 😅
That's what I was going to say 😂 everything above is more sketchy than below.. the scaffold is fine and he's rebuilding the floors as he goes. I'd be more worried about a wall collapsing on me than falling
@@Tony-InLosAngeles how about the beam he put the floor boards on?
I'm always so happy to see another of your videos come up because that means another day without a traumatic brain injury. Love the content but please stay safe.
You are too funny. Good thing you are not afraid of heights! My knees start getting wobbly just watching!
Ha! Thanks for translating the slow-mo! Too funny!
What a view off those, or through those, balconies. The idea of being able to properly view that has to be part of what helps you keep going. Good work once again, Dan.
Yes, having hanging toilets is a must these days. No chateau is complete without at least 1 of them. Having a suspended cistern is also a positive advantage. We will all be wanting one soon. Trendsetter.
🙂😀😃😄🤩😆☺😊😘
I saw the cistern high up on the wall in the other bathroom but when the camera showed us something else, i thought it was just a water storage tank. 🤷🏼♀️
@@GenaF near the end of today's vlog you can see a third toilet/bidet near the water tank.
Your camera skills and background atmospheric music is exceptional much like your communication skills and interaction with us, even though you can’t see us.keep up the good work and well done for keeping up with the daily vlogs after such hard physical work.✅✅✅✅✅✅✅✅👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Mate, this building has really been through a tremendous amount of structural damage. I highly recommend you seek out a structural engineer to review the building and ensure your plan and sequencing of work. For the steel you really need to be thinking of sand blasting then proper priming the finish coat with anti-rust paint. You can get small sand blasting kits so you can move about more easily and keep the one man effort going.
Most of the mortar looks to have failed and steel has surely warped from the fire. The old steel and modern steel are not the same. Engineer will sort that big out for you. Excited for the results though. Stay safe!
Looking great!
If the chateau originally had live-in staff, they would have lived on the highest floors (which would have been much less grand/tall) and you're right, there would have been a secondary staircase for their use. Most likely relatively plain.
The main staircase did go up to the second floor though, which is where the ceilings are much lower already. The secondary staircase would have led up to those small balconies and the room above the main staircase. You can guess its location from the steels in the ceiling, there's a square opening.
Dan takes gardening to new heights!
Good one!👏🤣🤣
Or depths.
😁😁
All the camera angles are really cool on this one. Kudos.
😂 That ending was hilarious!
I can see you are working hard. One request is that you could please wear gloves more often.
Have a large tote and or bucket to connect to the hook on the winch so you can bring up tools etc and take down rocks etc.
Maybe that old man that stopped by with the pictures could tell you about and secondary stairs. Also I was thinking that maybe you could find the blueprint on file at the municipal offices? If so it would help you recreat what you want/need to.
Thanks for the video and for taking on this project. Daughter studying historical preservation architecture. I think she’d love this. Or scare the hell out of her!
The vaults and the iron beams were a construction method from the later 1800's. You should have the iron tested to see if it can stand up before a building code enforcement becomes an issue.
@@greatplainsman3662 This!
Yes, Dan takes advice from a tractor man rather than a structural engineer 🙄🙄
As he has applied for building permits he will have been required to provide architectural design and an extensive report on the structural integrity of the building. He's just messing with the viewers to get more comments.
LMAO the slow-mo was funny, thing are looking up😂🤣 and yes you are awesome and doing something most only dream of 😁 can't wait till the next adventure
I’m addicted to your channel. I watch it everyday. Springfield, Missouri USA Thank you.❤
Dan, what a day, you're on the 2nd floor. Ground Floor, 1st Floor & 2nd Floor. The webbed straps you're using appear to be stabilizing the scaffolding more than before. cgzone8
I look forward to the day when one of the wings has a roof!
DAN! Hope you see this...OSHPO...it is a rust neutralizer and etching and bonding agent before painting! OSPHO!
Watching with both eyes covered
“If these walls could talk…”. The secrets that amazing chateau hold!!
I really appreciate it when you give us (people who know nothing about rebuilding half destroyed buildings) explanations as to what your decisions are and why you’re doing things in a particular order. It’s so fascinating. Also, not sure if you’ve already explained it but I’m trying to figure out where the fire started and why some wooden parts didn’t burn?
I'm tempted to guess first floor hallway. The ceiling joists between the first and second floors are badly burned and the walls have lots of soot on them. So does the bathroom on the right (standing in front of the building), the one with the upside down toilet. The bathroom on the left has some heat damage but less soot and no real structural fire damage, so I think there was some smoke in there but no actual fire (smoke is hot enough to destroy things all on its own, no flames needed). The bedroom on the first floor straight across from the stairs was apparently safe enough for the owner to escape through the window, so that wasn't where the fire started. The rooms on the left and right have substantial damage to the point of the floors no longer existing but the walls look very clean. That's throwing me off a little. I don't think the fire started in the basement or on the ground floor, most likely the first floor. That's all educated guesswork though.
You bet. Liking your artistry!
The wench will save so much time and energy when it comes to shuffling more roofing tiles at the farmhouse.
Possibly the reason the highest floor has lower ceilings is because at one time it could have been servant's quarters or the children's nursery. Love watching the transformation.
It is astonishing how much work you get done while also capturing it on video, including artful still shots of the chateau, and keeping yourself in one piece. Then doing all the editing day after day. Topping it off we get a bonus Sunday post. I don’t know how you keep it up, but am glad you do becauseI have become addicted to your daily vlog!
Great work, Mate. May I make a couple of suggestions? Firstly. You should consider a safety harness and a good tie off point. Uncomfortable, but better than a three storey fall. Secondly. As you get more floors installed, it's going to get progressively darker. You may want to consider running some temporary festoon lighting as you go.
Nick, the tree guy uses many precautions in the trees. cgzone8
Strapped to what? The tallest most stable thing in the Cháteau was the tree growing in the middle of it…and they chopped that down! 😅btw harness are very dangerous if you haven’t been taught how to get out of them.
a harness for solo work is useless unless you are able to self recover from the fall. Working at height is way more than just throwing on a harness. I could be wrong but I doubt Dan is trained in WAH and self recovery, unlike Nick, who needs to train up his own team in safe access and rope use in order to satisfy the law when employing people in his field of work . A solo accident resulting in him being left dangling probably without his phone (because Sods Law right?) could be equally traumatic to the body but much much slower.
In essence this is a YT video and the elements of jeopardy and perceived danger keep people tuning in. It's an income booster.
No amount of "thoughts and prayers" or heart emojis will change the way the channel is run!
Sad but true.
@@Tony-InLosAngeles Wherever he has the hoist mounted would be a great start. I get that WAH can be dangerous, but it'd always be better to have some chance.
@@tonyanddeb1012 You're right...but i'd rather have some hope than none. Could we all agree that some temporary lighting, as the project progresses, would be a good idea? I keep my people safe with WAH training and anything else I can, so my thoughts may be tainted by my want for safe people and practices.
Hopefully the beam is solid !
Looks safe enough to walk in but that is all going to have to come out eventually. A can of paint is not going to cure forty years of exposure and heat damage.
I think it's cast iron strapped around a reinforced concrete lintel so as long as it's not cracked it should be alright, a structural engineer should look at it though before it's boxed back in as it's full weight will be on it by the year after next!?!
@@thomasherrin6798 It looks like two steel I beams tied together with concrete in between. Rust-wise the beams look amazing, I'm really surprised! Not sure about heat damage though.
Wow, incredible! You the man. 😊
Dan, you and your adventure are fascinating as always, but please don't turn this adventure into a horror show. You are right. The top of the building is looking so fragile, and it is scary. You are amazing.
I couldn’t agree more. I wish he used more safety equipment.
Dan is really superb at making videos, one of the absolute best on youtube. That's why we're all here. His construction work is pretty bad though and in the US none of this would pass inspection. Hard to believe that France is that lax.
@@ji8044 He is that remote nobody would know he is there, it’s like a dream story, you could write a book about it
Dan, you know your construction techniques are for restoration in France. The United States is a different part of the world. (A parking garage in New York, with many floors collapsed last week. The building codes didn't seem to help.
@Ronald Horton I agree with you. Dan seems to be well aware of the possibilities and takes calculated risks. Yes. Accidents can and do happen, but the majority are due to carelessness. Like he'll sit with one leg over the edge of the flooring but his weight is firmly on two solid points as he clears off the beam. Unlike the famous poster picture of New York builders eating lunch along a hanging girder.
looking forwards to many more videos of this project and wishing you great success!
That ‘hanging toilet’ is a bidet Dan, take care as you climb higher, please 🙏🏼
The little tree that you planted is a Yew.
Keep safe Dan..you have family😊
Hey Dan, nice job, you are making tremendous progress, I have a question for your next Q&A, how many bedrooms and bathrooms were originally there before the fire? Well done, you're one of a kind Dan.
Seeing another hanging toilet leaves me flushed with excitement
😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Yay! Extra video!!
See you tomorrow Dan😊
The view the higher you get is really great, just be careful.
Love the humor Dan….wise you are! Maybe Nick can help with an extra safety harness as you get up there? What would it hold onto however? The collection of potted pottys is growing for the ‘pottenger’!
Navigating the trickier bits as you ascend from the basement to ground floor to the first floor then the second floor and upwards to the third and beyond. The sky's the limit. Some keepsakes along the way. A shaver, handle, timer, plant pot toilet, bell, metal framing, what else as you go higher.
One person show: script, record, edit, plan work, purchase materials, clear then support overhangs or landing areas, change rental vehicles. Simply amazing and every day. A window to the sky.
Dan, unintentionally, has surely added a new term to be used by restorers, renovators, and the constrution trade everywhere: "The Baddies". So simple, no explanation needed and right on point.
Your toilet with a plant makes a lovely front enterance piece. I hope you find some more chateau treasures!

Dan, I just really appreciate the way you keep your work area so tidy! PS. Luv the slow Mo! 😂😂😂
My aunt grew up in a Chateau in France. Her mum was ‘staff’ and they lived in the attic of the house. While the high ceilings were reserved for family, the smaller rooms house the maids, cooks etc. No idea why the ceilings are lower in the roof, but hope this gives you an insight into who lived up there!

There used to be a toilet with a water tank in my grandmother’s house when I was little (1964/5-ish) & I regretted it for a long time after she upgraded to a modern toilet, lol. Pulling the chain to flush it was so much fun! 😂
Servants stair to servant quarters seems likely. Brick roof system looks like Catalan Vaulting, or very similar.
Very common in many places in Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, although often using regular bricks stood on the long edge (rather than laid flat like these seem to be) for additional strenght.
Woooooooow what an absolutely gorgeous view …
