What is truly mind-blowing is that Dan was a chef, then a gardener at Lalande as well as renovating his cottage. Now Dan has taken on a mammoth task of a Chateau resque. There is a lesson in this for all of us. You can achieve anything if you turn your mind to it. Well done Dan.
I think it implies a certain superior intelligence. He needs challenges, because his mind is always going. This puts him way ahead of the"normals" who inhabit the earth and just plod along doing just what's in front of them. Those "normals" never realize the world around them. They spend all their time defining their limits. Dan defines life by what he can get done in a day, what challenges he can attack and do, not what he can avoid doing, or interacting with. Very rare, especially in this new Normal of wokeness where people spend hours defining their work constraints by doing as little as possible. Kudos, Dan!!
@@erad67 crazy to think just 3 years ago he was a little camera shy from Stepnsnie's vlogs and what has transpired over the 3 years is incredible for him!
When you lay brick, consider “buttering” each end before laying it in place in the bed of mortar. You’ll have less mortar waste and you won’t have to try and force mortar down into the gap between the bricks.
Yes I’ve never seen bricks laid with “dry” ends before. I saw that he also did this with concrete blocks. Is this taught in Europe? Seems like a lot of mortar gets wasted, and he has to drag it way up there!
It would be sooo nice if one of the local visitors with construction experience, volunteered to come help you rebuilt that piece of history known as your chateau! (Edit: just having an extra pair of hands and body around would be beneficial.)
You have shown that you are so capable to turning your hand to any job that needs doing, even learning new skills along the way. Feel proud because this task is mamouth and you have shown one man can fix this Chateau. Well done Dan 💕🇦🇺
I'm amazed at what Dan keeps getting done day after day. I'd be tired by the third or forth day and wouldn't be able to keep up with him. It's great that he's getting visits from people from the village and former students who lived in the Chateau. Also great you said that you had coffee and not tea.
This is like is job that he goes to every day to make money from the videos. That is how he is driven. This may be his full time work. He has high energy and has children to think about too. Lots of energy and relaxing working and getting lots done and accomplished. If he had strangers coming to help he would be liable should anything happen for safety reasons. And if they have no experience, it would take a lot of energy to ensure they know what they are doing. Plus NO toilet facilities or water.
Looks like things went smoothly today. Nice that you can brew coffee for visitors. I picture all of you sitting at your big table, after they've enjoyed the tour!😅 See ya tomorra! ❤ 🙏
The hoist works great! Admittedly, not as fun to watch as you taking the tiles off the barn roof and wondering if the bucket would make it down without dumping 🙃 Teasing of course, it's good to see the structure gaining strength!
The thing with lime mortar or cement is that it is to be softer than the brick being used. If there is any cracking you want the mortar to crack not the brick. If you are using clay brick use lime mortar. If you use cement with clay brick the clay brick will crack before the cement does. You can use cement with hard stone because the stone is harder. Soft stone needs lime mortar. It is amazing to see the before and after. Thanks
Your brickwork looks very pretty Dan. The hoist must be making things quicker and less back breaking (not that it isn't tough enough). Glad to see a shopping bag being put to good use. 🙂

Dan I don't know when it's been so much fun to see a man laying bricks but it is. What you are doing is so interesting to all of us. Your brick work is really fantastic.
I absolutely love seeing new materials going into that building to provide structural stability. New beams, new bricks. Hopefully some new iron beams soon as well. Keep it going. I’ll see you… tomorrow!
Oh this is cool to see bricks coming in. I didn’t think we’d see any real building beyond floors for a while. I figured main floor/basement ceiling would be first. Keep up the good work.

Dan, there’s nothing more refreshing than starting off the week with a good lime render! I’m happy that the local community is taking an active interest in the restoration because one of your objectives was to make the grounds available for people to visit.
He didn’t do a lime render, he laid bricks and used a lime mortar mix rather than a Portland cement mix. A lime render would be the equivalent to Stucco.

Moving right along! May I suggest one thing? If you “butter” the ends of the bricks before you lay them on the mortar bed, you will save a lot of time.
