      My beloved home is 89 years old. I’ve been here for 41 years & raised my beautiful family here. I always felt it was a small home filled with love. A 1,950 sq.ft cottage with a long footprint and 3 beds. Once I was buying a piece of glass for a broken indoor door, & telling the story of my sweet cottage to others standing in line with me. I live in a rather smallish town and it wasn’t difficult to know my home, if one knew the area. Three persons away was an elderly man, who patiently listened to my tale, with a smile. As I finished my story of my little house, filled with love. And he remarked that he knew the house, and it was always filled with love. He’d been raised there. And it was always filled with love. Some homes are happy, loved filled places. And will care for you, if you allow. I’m now that older person, still in my sweet cottage. And I’ll finish my days here. Not all of my family understands why I won’t move. But it’s not necessary for all to understand. My late husband made many improvements. And I still hear my children’s little footprints, occasionally. And I am filled with love remembering all my days, here. In my sweet cottage. Happy days to all!

    Dan, my father built our beautiful home (all by himself) after WWII he came home (to Michigan) from Italy, where he was stationed in the Army Air Corp, and built our home. You remind me of him! I love that you are doing this by yourself. I was my dad’s little helper. I grew up loving the smell of saw dust and watching concrete being mixed for the cinder blocks. I’m nostalgic when I watch you! And a bit sad because my dad has passed on. I admire you and I’m rooting for you! I know you’ll succeed at this challenge. You’re what I call “A Real Man” ❤

    Hey Dan, I talked to a beekeeper friend of mine, he said after the local-beekeepers come, tear all the lath and plaster out of that wall, clean out all bee’s wax and honey away, and fill everything remaining with spray foam insulation. Only that will keep the bees from reclaiming that wall and vacant space. ( PS, there is still a hive in there, it only split when the hive swarmed.)

    I'm going to make a suggestion, since your building is in such bad shape from the elements, I suggest you run a few rods, through the building to tie the walls together, bolted through the wall so the whole wall doesn't fall down, because you are adding a lot of weight to unstable walls

    • @electra6821
      @electra6821 Год назад +23

      That's what they do with old, brick buildings in California. Because of the earthquakes, you need the extra stability. Dan's brick walls look pretty thin at the top. It wouldn't hurt to get some steel into that tower.

It is highly unlikely that he's a complete novice , you can tell that by watching him working in such a methodical manner , just his work re-pointing the basement walls should tell you that he's got a pretty good idea about what he's doing

    I must admit I got nervous when you climbed up to the top Dan, but then I had to remind myself that all was well because you had shared your video lol. You will have to get the other toilet down safely so that you have matching planters for the front door.😂

      What a fantastic concept! I’ll take it further… what if he put some of that high strength laminated glass in some of the flooring on each level so that the light filters through? It would be a homage to the ruin it is today, part of this building’s history. We all know Dan isn’t afraid of heights so I think he would be tickled by the idea of standing on glass flooring and looking down. I can almost picture the camera angles for that vlog.

    The higher you get, the more human and graceful the scale of the place. Seen from the ground with no floors or ceilings in the way, the whole place feels a bit like a formerly very fancy oubliette, but as you gain a level with the windows, it becomes clear how the spaces will one day flow into each other and embrace those wonderful views. The scale of the rooms is actually quite gracious, they're not wildly oversized and ridiculous, but neither are they cramped in like the architects were trying to tetris in as many rooms as possible instead of designing what was needed for comfort.

    Use a Grout/ Mortor bag and fill in at ends of beams to help secure each new floor to adjoining walls . Put some decking screws in beam ends to give mortor something to hold on to otherwise the beams will eventually pull loose from mortor . Use blower to blow out any dust first .

    OK, today was extra special, I just LOVE the chimney pots and the green tiled pointy bits and then looking from one room to the other and then out the window through the balustrades ... that really was special. And treating the end bit is VERY important because dry rot is a killer to any building and it just takes a few spores and some dampness or water to activate them, even after 50 years. It is good money invested !!!

  • @shirpaten
    @shirpaten Год назад +10

    AHmazing! The views are stunning and the little bits of history which are revealed at every angle are fabulous. The chimney pots are nothing less than wonderful and the ladder hook still attached to the remains of the slate roof testify to the quality of the original construction. I think that some of the anomalies you are discovering like strange vents and bricked openings can certainly be attributed to changes made by succeeding users. I wonder if there are missing fireplaces, too.

    • @michellebyrom6551
      @michellebyrom6551 Год назад

      I wondered what that hook was for. So obvious after I read it. I agree about the quality in the details making maintenance as easy as possible. Even without fixing tiles, the roof would need clearing of wind blown debris.
