    Rich, thanks!, for sharing many insightful and useful tips with all of us out here. Mastering the buck-tail is nearly an art form in and of itself. Looks like we might in for an early run on stripers this year. Temperatures were up near 60 degrees here in Massachusetts. I used your Bing Map tips for a new fishing spot on Westport river late last fall. And landed a keepah!

      +Stephen O'Brien You are welcome. We had a warm winter in VA also. Scads of small fish everywhere. Striped bass fishing is very different down here as compared to up north. Much more predictable, this from living and fishing the waters of Long Island for clse to 40 years. And yes, while not perfect, when you can get the airplane shots, Bing maps can be helpful. Have a good spring.

    Rich, where I live there is a very challenging spot I would like to get your opinion on how to fish. I live in the San Francisco Bay area. The place is Fort Baker, CA. Just South of Sausalito. The spot is Point Cavallo. This is just East of the Jetty. If you can see the underwater structure, (Google SF Bay underwater) you would see the point extends underwater for a few hundred yards and a major drop off to the East and West sides running North/South down too approx. 180 feet. The West side forms Horseshoe Bay. I can cast out too about 100-140 yards depending on the winds. The out going tide is extreme and is the most challenging to fish. I have caught Lingcod, Rockfish and perch but no Stripers or Halibut. The Halibut and Stripers migrate thru the Golden Gate each year. I would imagine Stripers feed either on the incoming or outgoing tide to one side of this underwater point. To the North is Sausalito and Mill Valley. There is a large area of shallow water flats. This area gets washed each day out past Cavallo point on the outgoing. I have not figured out what lure or too what depth and too which side of the underwater point the fish should be. Let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks!

    Rich, I'd like to apply some of your techniques for fishing bucktails in a deep, fast, inlet. I'm fishing something similar to your conventional setup in this video: conventional reel with 30lb line and an 8 ft rod. You mentioned how mono helps to float the bucktail off the bottom. Suppose I were using braid main line, with a mono top shot... 10-15 yds of 30-50 lb mono should be sufficient for floating, yes?

    • @richtroxler
      @richtroxler  6 лет назад

      Hi Mueshow. The mono top shot will help for sure so you should be able to dial in a weigh of bucktail that should respond to the pressure, so bring a good assortment of body styles and weighs. Stick with the think body bucktails, no skinny Spro types. I like Andrus bucktails if you can find them.

  • @donaldtlowe
    @donaldtlowe 5 лет назад

    Thanks for responding Rich. I'm talking about the point at the end of Sommerville Road. That point extends underwater south for about 400 to 500 yards tapering deeper too approx. 180 feet. It forms a cove on the west of the point south of the jetty. I can reach 120 yards from the bend in the jetty toward the cove, but have never caught anything there with bait or lures. When the tide is going out it's fast moving to the Golden Gate Bridge and then the Pacific. I catch rock cod and Lingcod on the incoming tide on the east side of the point. That's fun however, I'm sure there must be Striped Bass in the area as well. Here is a pic of the sea floor for the Bay. It's not that great. walrus.wr.usgs.gov/coastal_processes/sfbaycoastalsys/images/bathy_c1259.jpg. Let me know what you think. Again, thanks for responding.

    • @richtroxler

      The bottom hasn't changed much other than the dock they made for the barge. But I think all the noise has been a turn off for the fish. I saw this on Long Island also when they were rebuilding the bridges. Hopefully they'll finish it on schedule. Another set of pilings to fish from my kayak won't suck lol. Hi David. With bucktails, not recently. Back on Long Island years ago there were some unusual spots I would use a light bucktail in shallow fast water, but the sprcies I fish for typically don't spend too much time there. No reason why they wouldn't work though. I'll try and fit some bucktailing into my fishing schedule late fall if my head doesn't start spinning again lol.

  • @idkwhattouseforname
    @idkwhattouseforname 3 года назад

    Wealth of knowledge here. Thank you.
    I do similar fishing on a kayak too and this is going to help me both shore and yak.
    How do you feel about tying direct using a kreh's loop? Supposedly gives the jig more action, but I'm wondering if the feel will be difference than the palomar for the purposes described at the end of the video.

    • @richtroxler
      @richtroxler  3 года назад

      Once again, swamped with work so I apologize for the late reply. Thanks for the kind words and for watching. I don'y like any kind of loop or clip on a bucktail. A bucktail doesn't need more action and the loop removes the all important feel. When tied direct, I can feel a fish swim by my bucktail or feel the inhale before the bump bump. I can also feel the slight change of current right next to the bottom and that helps me avoid snags. The action comes from the trailer, in most cases pork rind. It's what provides the vibration and action. So the short version, keep it simple, particularly in deep, fast water. 100% breaking strength, easy to tie, palomar knot. Be well and stay safe.

    • @idkwhattouseforname

    • @richtroxler
      @richtroxler  10 месяцев назад +1

      Max depth was around 20 feet. The current rips pretty good through here, so that's a big factor. You don't get much reaction time on the bottom before you're hung.

    • @marshallkise6852
      @marshallkise6852 10 месяцев назад

      @@richtroxler I see. That's great to know. Thank you. Could this approach be applied the same when using 30 lb mono or is it preferred to use 50 lb for better buoyancy and control?

Im getting back into it now that I'm in the Richmond va area. I am about to try my hand at some bass when the season opens up Jan 1st. it seems like there will be some warm days. I also wanted to hear your opinion on one of my major takeaways from your videos. Fish like contrast. the contrast in current, structure, movement, or lighting. do you think that is a reasonable statement?

    • @richtroxler
      @richtroxler  3 года назад +1

      Hi Matt. Glad to hear you're getting back into fishing. It's a great was to disconnect from the craziness in the world lol. Your statement is reasonable in a general sense but there's a little more to it than that. I would change the word "like" to "use" or "are drawn to" because these things are utilized for different purposes such as resting, active feeding, hiding, or avoiding being eaten. One fishes disadvantage is another fishes advantage. But yes, in general I would say your statement is a good starting point as opposed to just going to the waters edge and spiking a rod. It's good that you are thinking, for it is knowledge that catches fish, not the latest rod, reel or plug. Thanks for watching and have a pleasant holiday season.

    so i looked at google maps and saw a few no fishing signs along the area you called "the wall" (wolf***** channel) how do you avoid problems while fishing the opposite bank of the signs? this video is not that old so these changes may be recent.

    • @richtroxler
      @richtroxler  7 лет назад

      Not entirely sure you are looking at the right place. The "wall" is not really a secret fishing place as access is allowed on the side I was fishing. The other side has no fishing signs on it however. It's either Long Creek or Broad Channel, not sure what they call that section. That being said, I pretty much made my career fishing places that "technically" you were not allowed to fish at, or on lol. Mostly night stealth ops.

    Im headed out this morning cant figure out where to go. Last week I got a lot of Striper hits under that bridge on Chartreuse Gulp Swimming mullet. But some guy said he catches more at Rudee flipping docks. I never catch anything at rudee and I just got some D.O.A shrimps and I think throwing them in that fast water column at Seawall would be a winner but there are more options at Rudee what do you think. Im ubering it so wherever I go is where I stay lol.

    • @richtroxler
      @richtroxler  7 лет назад

      The place I shot this video at "The Wall" is deep and fast, so it is a very different animal than fishing fishing Rudee and Lake Wesley. When fishing the wall, most of the bass you'll catch will be near the bottom, typically lying behind whatever hump on the bottom they can find. They're not going to burn calories just swimming around in that current mid-depth or near the surface, unless they are really actively feeding on something that is located there. So at the wall, you have to fish heavy jigs / bucks on heavier gear, and put it in their face. Other than the inlet proper, Rudee is fairly low current and the area around the docks is not very deep, so much lighter heads and baits can be used. This is a much better place for 1/2 oz heads with Gulp 4" Mullets. As for where, when I fish from my kayak, some docks will have them and some won't, so you have to move around a lot to find them.

Depending on the depth of the water and the speed of the current, I see no reason at all why you couldn't bucktail the bottom if you scale your equipment and baits up to match the conditions. If the water is really deep, say more than 40 feet, then you would basically be forced to go with braid, but if the current is swift, it may actually provide a better feel for the bottom than mono. It always comes down to conditions and what the bottom structure is. If it's totally snaggy, then you may have to use mono and the count down method to get close to the bottom without actually ticking it. You'll lose a few bucktails until you dial in, so maybe just start with equivalent weights first. They're cheaper if you lose one lol. Thanks for watching.

    What is the water that appears to be more shiny ?

      Changes in water depth probably, but little bursts of ripply water usually means the water is running over a rock or some other bottom obstruction.

      My stomping grounds for the past 10 years, since I left Long Island. I love Lynnhaven inlet and bay from my kayak, and Drum from the beach in the fall.

      Haven't really. I own a copy, one of the few fishing books I own. I fished with John a few times many, many years ago. Interesting character.

      +Antonio Berry I can take a look, BUT, I'll need to know the exact locations(s) you are inquiring about so that I can look them up on Bing maps myself. Many times it takes several different view angles to show the stuff I'm looking for. Message me through youtube and I'll give you my email address.
