Reading The Beach - Sandbars, Troughs, Dips - Let The Water Tell You Where To Fish

  • In this video I walk out onto a beach, describe the structure I see and how I identify it. Then I explain how I would approach fishing the area through different tidal stages and seasons for different species. This way the focus is not just on reading water, but also on why it matters as it pertains to fishing. It should give you a lot of ideas to explore on your next outing.

    Hi Rich. I am a 6 year river fly fisherman and want to try the surf. Thank you so much for the video. You don't realize how much you DON'T know until you listen to people like you . Once again, swamped with work so I apologize for the late reply. Thanks for the kind words and for the sub. Yeah, lots goes on at most beaches and it's the fishes world, so they relate to it all. Had a couple vertigo episodes about 3 weeks back because I pushing too hard. I was fishing late tides that week and one night I fish until 3:30 am, the following night 4:30 am, and then the following night after that I was heading out to fish at around 11:00. I got all the way to the beach and threw a vertigo as I pulled into the parking lot. I turned around and drove home with my head spinning and 40 minutes later when I got home, it was pretty much gone. I should have just taken a nap on the bed in my van lol. Had another vertigo a couple days later (a short one) but nothing since then. At 68 years old, I guess I just can't fish as hard as I'm accustomed to doing lol. I'll never be ready for the couch ;-) Be well and stay safe.

      Hi Tom. The vertigo comes and goes. Right now it's gone and I hope it stays gone, at least for the rest of the fishing season LOL. Thanks for the kind words. I'm just trying to pay a little something forward to a sport that has given me a lifetime of pleasure. There's much more to learning to fish than just catching fish. It's about process, about problem solving, it's building on knowledge and then rebuilding on new knowledge, much like science does. It's thinking in the long term, something that is missing in today's world. I had some guy rag on me because I wasn't telling him where I should throw his sinker and "bate". The only thing I can tell people for sure about surf fishing is that there is no instant gratification lol. Thanks for watching and be well.

      Hi TF. Very sorry for the late reply. I had vertigo issues again that dragged on for a while but I'm back now. Thanks for the kind words and yeah, it's been a messed up couple of years. 2 falls ago I missed the entire fall run. Last year, I missed the last half of it. Then Covid showed up, which I dodged, then vertigo again lol. I've been spin free for 3 months now, finished my album (long overdue) and working on getting it mastered and out the door. I'm working on a few videos, done some fishing, BUT MOST OF ALL, I'm hoping to make it through a full fall season without any more problems. For the last couple years I've wanted to take 3-4 weeks and just fish my way down the coast from VB to Charleston SC where my sister lives. I put a bed in my van and I've been dreaming of this run for a while and I'm hoping to make it this fall. At 68 y/o I'm still strong as a bull, but I'm not getting any younger, so I want to put a check mark on this one. Here's hoping for a great fall run. Be well.

      @@richtroxler Hi Rich, vertigo is terrible! I have had a bout of it before as well initially thought it was the end but it wasnt 😅 luckily it went away. Glad to hear you have been without episode for a while such a crappy thing to deal with. We made it this year for our spring trip, first line in the water nabbed a 44.5 then it seemed that the teeth moved in and all the drum went somewhere else for the rest of the trip. Sometimes you slay them sometimes you dont 🙂. The trip sounds amazing! Hopefully you will chronicle your journey.. The strip south of VB to the NC line (back bay) has always seemed magical to me, good mix of fish in that area. Good luck friend! Hope you stay healthy.

      Hi Mark. I hope you enjoy my videos. Yup, vertigo is no fun, that's for sure. With Meniere's disease in my right ear, I'll have to deal with it off and on for the rest of my life. It seems to be under control via meds but does rear it's ugly little head every now and again when I push to hard. My biggest problem is I don't get enough rest aka burn the candle at both ends and that's when it hits me. And like you it changed the way I look at things. My new saying is that "Every day is a gift, to be appreciated, and NEVER taken for granted." I hope yours stays away. Be well and stay safe.

      It's been pretty good for the past year. Had a few vertigo bouts during the fall fishing season, but when your 68 and out fishing until 4:30 every night, I guess I was asking for it lol. All in all, I can't complain compared to what I went through. Thanks for your thoughts and have a pleasant holiday.

    Hey Rich, Gerry in Ponte Vedra FL. You sound so much like John Skinner. I'm from NYC area and know and have fished Long Island. The beaches here in my area did confuse me as I was remembering the beaches from up north. We are now in the end of the Pompano migration and this video did make me rethink what to look for on the beach. Mostly the current sweeps southward and sputniks are required to hold ground. Water color is also hard to read because the transition from shallow to deep is way beyond my casting distance. You have reinforced to me that I don't have to try and bomb it out there because Pompano like coquina clams, (periwinkles), and sand fleas which are at the low water line when the waves recede. You gave me a new tactic to try. Go for the troughs and holes which I have seen at low tide and try closer casts. The Pomps are after bait and I see the bait close to shore. No need for the 14' Pompano rods but a nice 10-11 footer would do. Glad to hear your feeling better and will wet your lines again in Va. Beach and NC. Go get a nice one. Gerry

      Hi Gerry. Very sorry for the late reply. I had a health issues again that dragged on for a while but I'm back now. I've known John for a long time. We were both affiliated with noreast.com back in it's heyday. He's a regular on Zeno's Surfcaster's Journal now I think. I haven't spoken to him since I moved down here, but I've messaged Zeno a few times. I should keep better contact with them. I still talk to the greek all the time. I have to agree with you, the beaches in Va are different than up north but not as different as FL. Even up north, there were times when the bass were right up on the shore eating mole crabs (with sponge) or after a wicked blow when the surf clams would get washed up and cracked around the inlets and groins. Bait and structure, in that order. Structure, without bait is nothing. Bait will find structure, predators will find structure, the fisherman's job is to find all three. Thanks for watching and I will be having new content coming in the near future. Be well.

    Great video Rich! Thanks for putting so much useful information in there, it really helps a newbie like me out :)
    What rigs are you typically using for the different areas in the surf or for different kinds of fish? Thanks!

    • @richtroxler
      @richtroxler  4 года назад +1

      Hi Phil. For fishing chunk bait for big Red Drum (VA) and Striped Bass (LI) I use a fish finder rig aka sinker slider rig. It's pretty simple really. Large circle hooks (12/0) snelled on very short 80 lb mono leader (4" or less) to a 230 lb Spro swivel. I cover this stuff on another video in my surf fishing series called "Gear and stuff" or something like that. Thanks for watching. Great info, quick question i also fish in Virginia, eastern shore to be exact and one thing I’ve noticed is that some waves will break a little bit off the beach then start to build up only slightly smaller and break again into the surf zone, the surface of the water in between the first breaking wave and the last right in the surf zone most times being a frothy white mess. With the waves breaking and reforming slightly smaller ones does this mean there is deeper water in between that the surrounding areas?

    • @richtroxler
      @richtroxler  4 года назад +1

      Hi Ryan, When a wave breaks on a bar or on bottom, and then continues toward shore as a white frothy mess, this is called a spilling breaker and typically indicates a shallow gradually rising bottom. When a wave breaks on a bar, and the remaining wave reforms with little or no white froth, just a roller that makes it all the way to shore and then plunges, that indicates that there is a trough (deeper water) behind the bar. When waves roll all the way to shore and break on shore, that means deeper water rising sharply at the shoreline. I give a fairly good explanation and some good video footage of these on my video "Understanding Wave & Wave Action" Thanks for watching.

    • @richtroxler

      Hi David. I enjoy passing a little something forward to a sport that has given me a whole lot enjoyment through the years, despite the fact that it does take a lot more time and effort than most people realize. As for guide services, I'd have to say no. I've always been pretty much a lone wolf most of my like when it comes to fishing and while I like to teach people how to think and what to look for, I guard my specific spots fairly carefully. Also, I've been fortunate in my 6 years here to be accepted into a fairly tight knit group of locals with whom we share info among ourselves (mostly lol) and I can't betray their trust. However, if you are a subscriber, then there should be a way for you to message me your email. I would be happy to give you insights as to what's going on locally throughout the season. If you can't message me, then look me up on FB (with a message to identify yourself, because I get a load of friend requests). Thanks for watching and stay safe. This area is a bit of a hot spot in VA.

It sounded fine when working on them but when the movies were compiled the audio got messed up. Really bad for phones, better on computer, best on computer to external amp. I've sorted it all out now. Thanks for suffering through them lol. Be well and stay safe.

    • @richtroxler
      @richtroxler  4 года назад

      Hi Jeffery. I've never fished for surf perch, so I wouldn't know their feeding habits. Most fish, and I say most fish, because some fish have some strange feeding behaviors, but most fish follow the same general rules with regards to structure, current, baits and tide. Conditions vary quite a bit for species ,but the rest is usually somewhat predictable, at least as a starting point. Thanks for watching and stay safe.
