This is a great video and John revealed many fine points of bucktailing. His book is a must and there are many other pointers he didn't discuss it in this video. I would also like to thank him for describing the advantages of the Tactical Anglers Power clips.
I’m about half way threw your “ fishing the buck tail” book and I have a new perspective at looking at the strike zone and trying to fish left to right with the tide. Thank skinner.!
John,I totally agree with your philosophy about braided lines like power pro .I also tie Bucktails and your approach to color and hair amounts is on the money. Now I'm living in NC "Crystal Coast'' the fishing is much different than'' The Great Gun'' or the inlet but it does have its moments .I will be home for a few days for a taste of the Fall run.Great video, thanks and tight lines........See ya at Montauk
thanks for taking your time out and presenting this video, i am an avid surf fisherman and truly enjoyed and agreed with just about everything you had to say. i fish moriches inlet, montauk, and several places in between. Great video!!!
I thought mono was way more abrasion resistant than braid. Never have used mono since I learned how to actually catch fish consistently so I am not speaking from experience.
John, what kind of rod is that, the one at 15:50 when you started talking about rocky beaches? Been really enjoying your buck tail clips. Still a newbie at surf fishing though. 2 flukes thus far. Would've been more if rod didn't snap! About to get the 7-ft Penn Regiment and 360 slammer; but that pole here in this clip showing you setting some flukes in the rocky beach kind of got my attention. Thanks and more power to ya:). Happy 4the also!
John Skinner is a legend, but he is absolutely wrong about braid being more abrasion resistant than mono. Search for the independent testing yourself. Mono holds up well to abrasion tests. Braid will snap from less than a tenth of what it takes mono to snap. I still like braid, but abrasion resistance is one of the detriments to using braid.
I used this book to throw a beating on someone who was behind on their gambling account. I had my money within days. The recipient claims to have taken up fishing as a less risky hobby. A true win/win !
Hi Mr. John: My name is Roberto (love your books and videos) I am looking to buy a good pair of fishing waders. I want something good and durable but after some research can't make up my mind. Until now I used to buy the cheap ones. What do you recommend please? ...willing to spend the extra money. Thanks and good fishing!!!
Jaemin Lee : thanks you so much yes I will definitely stick to that and also thanks to Mr John for his advice. I really appreciate your help guys...Robert
do u like to use a snap swivle on bucktail to make it sit better on bottom. I really want to land a quality bass from the jetty this summer I have watched all ur jetty bass videos some pretty amazing fishing there bud I have acces to quality fishing gear
Watch the video again. JS uses a clip and a leader as he explains. Although I did not hear him mention line material for the leader the common wisdom is fluoro for fluke (summer flounder in NE) and in clear/clean water. IMHO mono makes a fine leader for most saltwater shore fishing situations but if you have fluoro use it, why not. Good luck out there.
HI John, I live in NY and I fish in port Jefferson all the time, do you have an email? I would be happy to pay to come fish with you sometime I want to learn more thanks Valerio
Deep respect for Skinner, however the movement of the boat bobbing DOES impact a lift/jig motion to the bucktail, despite the rod not moving. This 3-way situation does not exactly produce a pure "gliding" presentation.

great video, i dont know if u talked about it, but y do u use bucktails with mouth on it?

thats why you fish braid with a mono or floro leader
Hi John,
Would the bucktail work in fresh water lakes as well? Darren

Tactical Angler is referring to Crazy Alberto????
megasif I think it was the clip that he uses to hook his lures.
What lb line would you recommend

Hello John i fish for Atlantic sea Bass in Ireland and i was wondering if you know of any bucktail jigs that would be around 10 and 15 grams in weight
do u like to use a snap swivle on bucktail to make it sit better on bottom. I really want to land a quality bass from the jetty this summer I have watched all ur jetty bass videos some pretty amazing fishing there bud I have acces to quality fishing gear
+Joe Nicastro in my personal opinion, i use 30 pound braid, to a swivel, to a 3 foot piece of 40 pound mono, to a fast snap onto the bucktail
Hi, Carl from Calif., what time of year are you fishing?
I just want to ask: Do you use braided line direct to the bucktail or you use a flourocarbon leader? If the later, how long would you recommend?

I use 60 lb test braid surf all the time30 lb mono leaders it works
its a trip ! a lot of these tactics are not productive on the west coast !
John skinner is the professor of salt water fishing
I'm on the west coast...why dont people like bluefish....they seem wild
if the hair gets dirty does it matter
Dam the fever is strong i want to be out on the water
HI John, I live in NY and I fish in port Jefferson all the time, do you have an email?
I would be happy to pay to come fish with you sometime I want to learn more
thanks Valerio
40 lb braid or higher is good for surf fishing but me myself I would recommend 65 lb braid just to be safe
Fast action 7ft rod.. mono I'd where it's at braid is junk .
