Replacement arrived!By the way, I did forget to mention that the original lure did have a decent strike however as most anglers will attest you can get a hit ruclips.net/user/postUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 and fish will hang on and release lure. I used the replacement lure yesterday and ran thru a Shimano Waxwing, Kastmaster, Bobber (set to sink). I found the does run deep (I casting on the flats 3.5'). Make sure you adjust your rate of retrieve and rod tip angle (up) to prevent getting snagged on bottom. Used it a couple of times and action was very lifelike (looked like local bait fish for trevally), craftsmanship very good....however eyeball fell out. I asked for replacement and it is on it's way! It was very easy to change out treble to single inline hook.
You always learn something from a John Skinner video.
Most def.
instablaster.
I've had one of these in my gear for two years. Never threw it, it's going in the bag now!
John, your technique with the spook- I found to be the best technique for me. Holding the rod to the side with soft pumps and quarterly reel turns helps keep that necessary slack in the line. I tried other rod positions and retrieve speeds but nothing worked better than your technique. The spook plug really gets the bass triggered, even when there are predominantly bluefish on everyone else’s line. Thanks for the technique!
Thanks for sharing that. I'm glad it's working out for you!
I’ve been using spooks down on the Chesapeake bay now for some years. I’ve found that with the smaller lighter spooks, the pencil popper actions works well(especially in current). Larger/heavier spooks, sweeping motion like you explained
I use the super spook red head for striper, just got to replace the hooks. I live in Virginia and the spook slays them when they are running.
We use the heddon super spook jr for redfish, speckled trout and strippers in small creeks and rivers and they work. Also lemirs plug works makes one called the wave jammer. The junior is 6in and 2oz and the senior is 8.5in and 3oz. Try it out. I like the junior model.
Big speckled trout like Spooks, too, but I’ve never tried that large size bait. Will be getting one to try.
Duo Realis Pencil used real slow on aggressive fish counterintuitive but deadly no need for fast retrieve.
Great video, headon one knocker, popular in uk for our bass, on south coast, we call it "walk the dog" with a slow cadence, same with a xorus "asturie" top water lure, didn't take you long to sus out the perfect rod action and cadence speed, top fishing 👍
It's called "walk the dog" on the zara spooks here too. "South Coast", like Cornwall?
@@JohnSkinnerFishing, sorry for the delay, Portsmouth, Hants, 🎣🐟
Flat calm is the key...or slack between tides
You’re the man. Screw it I’ll go fishing today
Have a couple of these. Didn't know how to fish them until now. Thanks, John.
John, Great video as always!
I've been using Spooks for quite a few years now. A slimmer, smaller lure that's been working well for stripers is the 4" Rebel Jumpin' Minnow. Walks the dog in slimmer profile...been having good luck with it even in daytime.
No secret here on the N. Shore of Mass. You neglected to mention the rattle in the DOC that in my opinion is a bug reason why these spooks outperform others. Did the one you were using have a rattle? Great video, amazing how bass do not give up pursuing these.
Yes. These all have the rattle.
As you said John, lots of use here in CT :) I do change rear hook to a single. They cast great once you adjust the technique a bit.
I’m in ct and I’ve been Using the doc for 3 years now and it’s my favorite
I love spooks. Caught my first (and so far biggest) striper on a Chug'n Spook in the middle of the night. Might have to get that JW one to try on the open beach.
I always have a doc in my bag, and it comes out often when my arm/shoulder can't pop a pencil anymore. Gives me a few minutes to recover in case I want to switch back.
They still work surpringly well in a swell, just not in rough waters
A year late...but finally got a lil doc this winter. Can’t wait
Great video. I've picked up a few. But noticed two things, your back hook might be giving the striper leverage to help pop the front hook. And I noticed you it looks like you have knee pads on over your waders? If so what kind?
The pads are Hatch NK 45, but they don't make them anymore.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing thanks
Yeah John!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I dont leave home without a Bone color super spook
Very similar to the Yozuri Hyrdro Pencil...great "walk the dog" action...I use it the same way for stripers. Can also skip them across the top for albies.
I started using the Doc last year. One of the best striped bass lures ever. Take the treble hooks off and put singles on. It works better.
Wow I can’t believe you never tried these. I started using them about 7 years ago in Rhode Island. Back then you couldn’t get them pre packaged like in your video. They were considered “blanks” made by the company. They were cheaper too, lol. Fly charter captains use them without hooks to “tease” them for their fly fishing customers. By far my favorite and most used Striped Bass lure. Also to answer your question, they started as a musky lure and discovered by Striper anglers later on.
Yep - like you said - RI. I live 30 miles from there and honestly had only seen these at the winter shows, and twice on the rods of fly guides. Amazing the way they pull up unresponsive fish.
John Skinner Fishing they did in fact start as a musky lure. Discovered later on by Striper anglers. I prefer the larger size personally. Everyone knows it catches huge fish but what blows my mind is that schoolies as small as 20” will hit this thing, lol.
Wish they were still a secret! There is a reason it took you years to find out about them here. A secret of the pros, known well know to the general public..
David Flanagan what’s the big deal? Afraid people are gonna catch all the stripers on them now?
RIYakFishing not at all!
Have had great success using as a popper....
watching this video two months ago made a huge difference!
Thanks for your help!
@John Skinner Fishing yes keep rod lined up parallel to water. Pop wrist an crank slow like quarter turns to walk it. Occasionally good to pause very brief 1 to 2 seconds max then continue to walk spook. Yes important to keep slack in line pop wrist hard keep rod parallel to water an slow crank
Yes that is a pretty popular lure ... also are they glow in the dark?
Yep, despite its appearance the Doc can be a great producer. When the bait is smaller, I often have good luck with a Rebel Jumpin Minnow in bone, which is pretty much a mini Doc.
I've seen a few videos of you at this spot and I can't help think about the ones in my neck of the CT L.I Sound between Bridgport and Port Chester. I was introduced to walk'n the dog a few years ago, which is a killer technique. But I've also seen you with pencils and bucktails killing it at this spot. Wonder what's the difference between this day with Walk'n the Dog and other days with Pencils?
The difference to me was that I started with pencils - nothing. Tried this for the first time - raised 3 on first 5 casts. Back to pencil - nothing. Back to spook - fish. That's what impressed me was that it pulled fish that ignored the pencil. I alternated on subsequent trips, using the pencil for distance and covering closer fish with the spook. Those vids will post over the next couple of weeks.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing fish are like my wife. Sometimes you know what to do and sometimes, they surprise you. Very much looking forward to those videos. Keep on casting!
Got my first 50 this morning on a 9" Doc. Thanks John
congrats!
Spook Jr in bone color is a standard in southern California for catching halibut and corvina. Never heard of it catching a striped bass over here but we don't get many striped bass down south anyways. Maybe northern California people can chime in and say if it works for them.
You catch Halibut on topwater?? How deep is the water? That's amazing.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing 2 to 5 feet of water. Usually working the shallow water of a sandy beach or one of the local rivers that leads into the ocean. I've seen Halibut swim up and strike a ¹/⁴ oz Texas rigged white fluke that I was reeling right below the surface. We also catch them on crankbaits and spinner baits. Lots of freshwater tactics/ baits are used in our local bay fishery. My buddy has caught his keeper Halibuts this year on a "Alabama" umbrella rig and I've even caught a couple on a Ned rig.
Thanks for that info. Those sound pretty aggressive.
I just started to get into striper fishing. I live in Minnesota and only get to the coast about once a year for a week or so. Being from Minnesota , I have been fishing muskies for many years and have found that there are quite a few muskie lures that work well for stripers. The similar muskie version of this lure is called a jackpot. Another rubber bait that works well is a bulldawg (made by muskie innovations). You have to change the hooks over for saltwater but they work really well.
thanks..
California they bite mostly when it's cold and overcast
Hopefully in my next life i will come back as you!! Lmao!!🤪
Hey John have you tried out the new Yo Zuri 3D Twitchbait? It has great action and casts like a bullet. I think you would really do well with it. It comes in heavier models now for saltwater applications. And i think that action you impart to the Spook plug is called "walking the dog" if I'm correct. It is deadly for largemouth bass.
Have not, but that looks good and I'll give it a shot next season.
I like the action but I don't like all of those hooks. Possibly a single hook on the front and maybe one on the back.
Welcome to DOC fishing John... it’s one of my go to plugs
Looks like a sex toy but it catches. I use the rebel jumping minnow with upgraded hardware instead of the lil. But the full size gets thrown when they are looking for something bigger.
It most certainly does catch fish.
caught alot of large mouth with a spook as well
I'm a New Hampshire native, but I've been living in Michigan for almost 50 years now. I want to take the my kids back to New England for a vacation in the near future. Is there much of a striper fishery in New Hampshire?
I know Mass and Maine are good, so you're probably OK.
Hey Mr. Skinner, it seems like you foul hooked all of those stripers. But you didn't comment on it so I'm assuming what you saw was normal. Not one fish had the lure actually in its mouth when you reeled it in. Just an observation.
On high action plugs with belly and tail trebles the fish will at times "bridle hook" on the strike. Plug may also alter hook setting during the fight. One hook may release and another sets. Me personally use rear dressed single #5 or #6, less chance a fish getting eye hooked.
@@brianharding5618 👍
Great video quality, looks great
I JUST GOT TWO OF THESE LURES......> FISH ON
I use the bone or silver/bone saltwater heddon spook with an upgraded 3x treble on the tail and 5h split ring with the middle and the front removed. I would hate to spend $20 on one lure and loose it. Just bought 2 of the heddon bone saltwater spook for 2 of them for $11 and change on Amazon. But wanted to use the musky mania spook and the one your using but can't seem to justify buying it. If you can further sell me on it then I just might lol.
Check out Fishon Reds channel. They work spooks and Catch 2000’s fast like a pencil popper. They also remove the hooks, add a 20”+/- leader to a soft bait such as an AM Lures.
That's the way I always had the best luck fishing surface plugs and poppers, like the Tsunami plug - slow, walking the dog, like a spook. Always had better luck than with the traditional fast retrieve. So I'm not crazy after all......
Excellent as usual
There's nothing wrong with working the Doc like you did in the beginning-fish will come a long way to smoke that thing. I used to blow split rings apart until I added a barrel swivel and cut VMC.
I see you are now using diawa j braid and not spider wire stealth, is there a reason for your change?
J-Braid is a better casting line. Stealth is superior for abrasion resistance in the rocks.
People have to remember they fish in the north side of the east coast so there's way more fish there than with South because that's breeder grounds so you can fish with a fork with hooks if you have good day and have a huge percentage of landing a good fish and fish elect feeding by zones what they want to bite is a every day learning and try different techniques and lures patience is key for a angler that wants to succeed. Btw nice video like always
Thank you so much for your videos both informative and entertaining up here in New England in the dead of winter when I can't wait for the stripers
Try different rhythms. Fast 4 cranks followed by slow, lazy walk the dog triggers spectacular anger strikes.
All of us ct folks have been keeping this lure as a secret for many years lol
The Doc and jumping minnow best top water lure! All I use for top water
Hey John another great video. You’re in New England this time? I would love to see how you fish Robert Moses thanks!
White Water Outfitters in Hampton bays stocks all sizes and colors of the Doc and Lil Doc
I'd like to try my Daiwa UL120 underspin reel with that spook.
Master itself , dude catch fish even when sleeping 😁
We have been using the doc for about 15 years maybe even more here in Connecticut. Muskie mania didn't want to sell them paintless at first. Yes it is a original musky lure painted up a bunch of colors
I take the back hook off of these no point to have them unless you want to hook the bass in the eye.
South Texas, South Padre Island area, Spooke Jr. works... thanks for the video,,, took me a while to figure it out, but retrieval cadence depends on water temp, current, light, darkness... glad you are showing that it's okay to change up the cadence, just depends on water conditions.
John, another nice video!
I see this is low light. When is the best time to use these?
Low light or dark is always best for stripers, but these will pull them up in regular daylight too.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing thanks John.
Fish will eat or hit damn near anything presented right and if they are biting. Good video, Thanks.
Hey John you should try duo realis pencil SW
I'm sure you'll be amazed
Shhh if people get hooked on them the price might go up even more.
@@otroflores91 true they're quite expensive atm lol
@@otroflores91 but let's be honest the Japanese market has way better products and lures :/
@@Moe572 yeah the duo tail spins and huge 1oz spybaits work great for California halibut and just about any near shore fish in my area. The saltwater edition jerkbaits are killers too. Calico bass love them and even hooked up into a yellowtail with it this year.
@@otroflores91 unfortunately I don't live in the US I fish in the mediterranean lots of predators here. I used to buy lots of Rapala and some other American lures but once I got hands on the Japanese made lures Its hard to switch back...
Cool video fella! I use a similar lure to catch pike in England
They come from your side of the pond manufactured by Poes and made from cedar called the Giant Jackpot
They don't work all the time but under certain conditions they get smashed to pieces
I think Poe's got taken over by the Yakima Bait Company but I might be talking out my arse
They have a similar model called the Poe Tail that has only a mid treble and a big blade hanging off the rear
They work great in the summer for me
Don't know if they still make them but I don't think they'd stand too much time in the saltwater .
I don't have a bone costume spook but I think I'll be looking for one now
Good luck fella
I've caught many 25 to 30 pound and a couple over 40 pound stripers in middle Tennessee on the zara spook. It's amazing when they hit close to the boat... your heart stops for a few seconds. Definitely my favorite top water bait for stripers
Always change to singles, you'll hook up more on the middle hook.
Spooks are my go to lures when it comes to surface. Catches fish when nothing else will.
They are a staple for inshore and boat at the jersey shore when there are big baits around especially the really big one thats like 9 or 10 inches
Dood!!! Listen Those lures Are big over in England(old England) for Bass 🎣
This is great! Do you have a leader line or straight to the lure?
40 inches of 50# seaguar fluorocarbon.
Awesome plug must have in my bag at all times up here in Massachusetts. I know you guys don't get too much mackerel for bait but try that pattern.
$25. Pass.
I use the large Doc up north of Boston. Striped bass love that thing.
I just picked the 9in doc from out in ct and cant wait to plug it back in long island might pick up a 7in b4 I head back to ny and also cant wait to test it up in the Cape
How do you feel about stopping the plug and then starting? It’s worked for me sometimes but I always wonder if I should just keep it going or pausing .
In Quebec we use them for large mouth and small mouth bass . Awesome plug
I'm gonna be friggin broke, just inherited lures on top of a bunch I bought...now *this* .
Old timers around cape cod use to cut the ends off broom sticks and add hooks to make some of the first spook lures.
When will these lures be back in stock?☹️all sold out.
Its a killer here in Rhode Island... Always a go to..
I've been fishing the big 9" plug down here on the northfork for years now. I have spook lures of all sizes I always carry.
" Spectrum" Super Spook 🔥 if you're getting blow ups but no hookups change the color
I found the same thing this year as well, fishing the lower Susquehanna, threw a regular popper or "Creek chub" and nothing switched to a spook style bait and fish after fish after fish, Same with an upsized "fluke" style soft plastic unweighted, same as used in bass fishing just a larger bait and heavier gauged offset worm hook, there's something about that side to side motion they can't get enough of.
Yeah the exaggerated side to side motion really seems to mess with them. Remarkable how long they'll stay behind the plug and not let it go.
Not to mention what a nice day it was...
John, in your description above, beside the Jigging World link is the word Preferred. Is that saying you preferred that lure for what ever reason over the LilDoc?
Yes. The JW spook casts farther and still has great action. After a few more trips I mostly used the JW model.
I want to buy one of those where do I get it
There's a link in the video description.
"Walking the dog!" One of my favorite lures, but have to admit never used from the beach. For me, when a fish follows I will increase the speed dramatically, as if the bait is trying to flee. Also, a failure to committ could mean a color change is needed...Great video as usual, thanks!
Have you fished them at night
Yes and they work.
Do you pop and reel at the same time?
Yes.
Heddon salt water torpedo i use all the time ! its wrecks them
My first successful striper fishing sessions a few years ago were all with a rapala skitter walk. day or night there was something about that spook action that provoked pure hatred with the bass. I always wanted a longer casting one but I moved away from the coast around the time the Doc made it into the store. Beware the yozuri 1 oz version: it casts well for its size but junk action, junk lure.
Pure hatred? No pure nom nom nom..:)
Do you know if they're going to be at the Jersey Shore fishing show
Hey John what rod and reel are you using?
I took your advice and ordered myself one and one for my son, and rock fish are right around the corner !
First impression: looks like a squid to me
Spooks work awesome can't believe you just getting into it caught my first striper on one
Now the cat is really out of the bag.
Thanks for introducing me to this for the salt. Will definitely be in my bag.
