How to Read the Beach - A SIMPLE APPROACH to Surf Fishing Structure

  • How to read the beach, a simple approach to surf fishing structure with seams & changes. I often hear many folks new to surf fishing say "I don't see it! What structure are you looking for?" So I made this simple video to help you see some of the things I notice when i am looking for beach structure. The concept is rather simple when reading the beach. I just look for seams which are nothing but changes. A seam can be strong and contrasting, or so subtle you may not know they are even there on a calm day. Seams and changes on the beach are indicated primarily by turbulent white washing water or contrasting color formed by deep structure. Find a good seam you found change and that change may hold fish!
    The clips will show you outlined in RED where I see the seams, GREEN where fish may hold and BLUE where I may cast. You will see it all overlaps and hopefully solidify your view of the open beach and install your confidence when approaching the water. I also like the word MAY as the are no truths to any fishing scenario. Seams make changes and those changes hold fish. This concept can be applied to any fishing arena, be it lake, river, bay, inlet and even ocean... ANY SCENARIO!
    I wanted to keep the video short with a few examples but it went longer then I liked. You can watch it in its entirety or in pieces and try to follow the simple discussion through. I hit the basic concepts of changes and seems. The video is not so much made how to surf fish the beach but rather how to help you find productive water. I am sure I missed many thoughts idea and concepts and this can be discussed for hours but keep it simple and you may find the seams, the fish and the cast are all related. Any important points you would like to add please do and any questions I will be more then happy to fill in on your comments. Thanks as always for watching and hope you enjoyed the video as much as we did making it.

    Jerry, my name is James and I (very fortunately) just came across your channel while looking for some videos to help me further read the beaches. I wanted to say thank you for the incredibly in-depth tutorial here. This video is my game changer. I have slowly been getting better and better at reading the beaches over here on the east side of Florida (some areas have so much structure that they can be very hard to read for a less experienced angler in the subject), but this video is a refinement of all of the other ones that I've watched. I've picked up things here and there from them, but I am seeing and realizing so many of my mistakes from watching your tutorial. Thank you, man!

    Great tutorial. Nice to get the commentary on visualization from the view on the beach and not from the air. Definitely will use the info when I get out there.

      Thanks Cora! With so much water to look at it can be hard to breakdown where to fish. In simplest terms I like to tell people to look for any CHANGE you notice. That is where the fish will be. any turbulence. There so much and hope to put a light on some in this video. Thanks so much for watching, subscribing and all the kind words and tightlines and bigums on your vacation!

      @@FishYourWay There are times when I do *EVERYTHING* by the book, perfect fish finder rig, no blues, no wire leader. 12 foot surf rod, baitrunner reel, bunker chunk, cast in the right spots, and 6 hours not even a single hit. Then I take a newb friend (first time fishing) he chunks out a bunker tail on a wire leader and nails a 35 inch striper.

    Just.this weekend i kinda discovered this topic. 2 days of a bust. And trying to catch something i even went at night. Where the situation escalated and coast guard helicopters almost got deployed. Lol. Rock fishing off high cliffs at high tide at night isnt smart. I realized ive gotten too old for games for young studs....

    Hey Jerry I have a question for you...what would you recommend if you get to the surf and it's calm , still and almost glass like lol ...no waves or turbulence? Does this mean there's no structure?

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  7 лет назад +5

      One of the best days on the beach was just like you mentioned but 100 degrees out! Water was DEAD calm it was amazing! I was actually able to wade out in only shorts to the outer sandbar on the low and stayed quite cool. I was able to see every divot of structure on the bottom so the visibility allowed me to pin point my casts. The sand bars were as clear as day in that water as well. The amazing thing was I was watching fish swim around ether in the distance or tracing to my lure and watching them strike. I had an old friend at the time come down who was joggin and he was spotting fish from the top of the bank and pointing and I would just cast in that area and hook up. All that made the day stand out in my mind like it happened yesterday. It was a nice mix of bass, blues and fluke in the middle of summer! But with things so clear you will be able to see the bottom and anything swimming around. I have had plenty good days in such conditions. The beaches in the area hold good structure and the structure is always there. Anything higher then a fishes back will hold a fish moving I believe. That is a good question!

    I have an old conventional and it keeps bird nest. The spool looses line and causes it. How can I solve

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  7 лет назад +2

      Practice would be the best answer it may take time. but things you can do is start with monofilament it is supposed to be easier to cast but I do use braid. Go down a little on the brake. Best advice is to go easy on the cast. you will cat out far enough. Spin fishers tend to over power when the cast because you can. with any conventional if you over power, you lose control and you get those backlashes. As you feel more comfortable easing the cast go harder a little a time and open the brakes slowly till you get the feel. before you know it your reel will be wide open and youll be gunning casts out like a champ but just go easy at first. Let me know if that helps

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Jerry! Good question! They are all in the video but anything that draws water out in a straight path could be a rip, usually around cuts and plumes so there are many in the video some are just bigger then others. Rip current I think is a broad term I believe my best advice is look for any changes in current in any direction. I hope that helps!

    Where the waves are breaking out there that's a sand bar throwing it right in front of the sand bar is a great spot and as the wave breaks all little bait gets thrown around and the fish are there waiting for them. They love the white water loads of oxygen and little baits sand crabs sand fleas little shrimp etc. The beach lip is a fantastic place also it might only be a foot or two but they fish love to cruise through it looking for an easy meal.

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  5 лет назад +2

      Watch my other beach videos. you can catch fish in open flat water about any where but they tend to relate to portions of change or turbulence more often then not when feeding. Give it a go if you see any of the changes on your beach.

  • @tomtommyl805
    @tomtommyl805 7 лет назад +3

    let me see if I understand. you cast into the troughs behind a sand bar, or on the outside (far side) of the sand bar.If you have no sandbars around look for where the waves break close to the shore and quickly (that means it's deep there. and you should see dark water).Then if the waves are breaking far out and keep tumbling into the beach you have shallow areas and avoid that. Around 14:40 you lost me. I looked at the water before you went to a still frame and that spot where there was no foam on the still frame part wasn't there just 20 seconds earlier. The waves were randomly moving around. What I saw was waves breaking far out and then foaming all the way into the beach. So I'm confused there.
    Thanks for this vid, I'm retiring soon and have a lot to learn about fishing. I subscribed and will look at your other stuff.

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  7 лет назад +2

      Thanks Tom great comment! At 14:40 that is a deep drop like you said. but there it was a bit of definition a smaller point froming a plume or outsuck something like that. Actually any wheres along that beach edge would be fine to fish buit a little extra structure wou8ld go a long way! Thanks again!

    Thanks for the video. However, after reviewing all the blue stars you add - which are places that you would cast - you’re basically saying “cast anywhere in the water”. Honestly, this is what I got from the blue stars because you added so many of them. Said differently, there was very little beach where you WOULDN’T cast.

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  5 лет назад +1

      Look closely the overlap with the structure reiterating the concept. I will cast more often in areas I feel are more productive 75% of the time but I will certainly NOT rule out casting all along ANY structure, watch again you’ll see what I mean. Do take note, the casting follows the seams which is obvious and proper structure. In short your casts should follow seams however do pay more attention to the zones you feel are major rather then minor - fish move and hold
