I could totally do it! I live on the east coast of Canada and when hurricane Arthur hit I had no power or running water for 10 days. My husband who never grew up in the country though I was crazy for filling up buckets of water so I could flush our toilet. I used the rain gutters to fill them up. Luckily this was in the summer so we didn't have to worry about no heat. By day two I was gathering water from a stream down the street. I had a full propane tank for the BBQ. FYI pizza tastes delicious on the BBQ and cooks in about 5 minutes. It was honestly the best power outage I ever experienced. I got to connect more with my kids, we played outside more, went for walks in the woods. It brought me back to my childhood of growing up in Northern Canada camping at my grandma's cabin. No power, no running water, just a cozy cabin in the woods! I cherish it. Nature is beautiful and so healing for the soul!

Great video. The more people get prepped the better. You rock!
I watch your archery videos! I've learned a lot:).
Hey thanks much Lilly! Means a lot :) Take care
you are always on the channels I watch...it's so fun to watch people with growing dogs. Hear their commands. I thought I'd teach my puppy (18 months, rescue) German commands. Long time I only talked to him in commands, in German. He frustrated me one day, and I spoke very firmly to him in English.
Well, who knew? He knows English not German. LOL! We have a great relationship now.
@@FlyingAxblade_D20 Haha, great comment. Helped you brush up on your German though! 🤣🤣❤️

going off the ten words my brother taught me when he was in high school and I was in 5th grade /// he laughs when I say things to my dog. Then he tells me, "it's not like books". He's a good sport.
Thank you Brooke. It doesn’t have to be a world event. You’ve reminded me of our 7 day powerless winter storm years ago. I’ve always appreciated your mindfulness.❤️

Totally!
I was pocket texting. I was listening while at work and sent a nothing message. Sorry!🤭great information though. Unfortunately I will be doomed. $200.00 a week is difficult to pay bills and food for me and my pet's. Let alone buy supplies.😔

I know....I'm on disability and 1000.oo month is hard and I don't have a pet ,kids at home , nor a vehicle, but I've done about 3 to 6 months on food, need to do water, and have some canned meats, ham, chicken, tuna, and spam.
Yeah I did it. No power for 2 weeks after a hurricane. No job for 2 wks. Bought a bike to ride around on. Used candles at night. Ate cold ravioli out of a can. Honestly it was the best 2 weeks of my life. Peaceful and relaxing.
One of my favorite books, “One Second After”, read it three times. I have given this book to so many people! I totally recommend!
Such an eye opener. Everyone should read it. Schools should make it REQUIRED reading.
Agree. I could not put it down. Excellent ideas an thing you may not thought of.
awesome
Lame. Both books in the series are lame.
I also like Alas, Babylon from 1959.
Yes I could live without electricity for 2 weeks. I spent a lot of my childhood up until was about 18 at my grandparents house up on a big mountain in Tennessee with no electricity no indoor plumbing so I learned how to live off the land. We were without power here in Ohio when we had those hurricane winds a few years back.People were going nuts at the grocery stores. So glad for gas stoves and grills and we have camping stoves. We've done a lot of deer hunting and camping through the years. I love living like that.
I remember those high winds. I live in Louisville Kentucky so we got Em too. but I was very lucky my electric stayed on but all around us didn’t.
Thank you for yet another great video Brooke!! Stay safe and enjoy!! Windsor, Ontario Canada
Yes, I have before when I was younger! We lived in the middle of nowhere in southern Michigan. We had plenty of food, from canning, a giant fire place to cook on, and lots of activities to keep us busy. I could still do it now too!
After a few months in my parents' basement, I took an apartment near the state university, where I discovered both crystal methamphetamine and conceptual art. Either one of these things are dangerous, but in combination they have the potential to destroy entire civilizations.
For your daughter, I recommend chewing raw garlic instead of regular use of antibiotics. The moment she feels an inkling of sickness creeping in, chew raw garlic. It will burn the tongue in the same places a doctor would visibly see infection. Nature provides everything we need. More people should become their own doctors. Food is medicine.
👍🏼💜✌🏼
I used to get strep too. Had my tonsils out at age 18. Helped a lot.
Yes, raw garlic - grow it in with your flowers, even. Also, plantago (plantain herb) is great for venomous bites, any inflammation, wounds, digestion. Raw ACV as a daily dose helps avoid/stop illness and also aids to reduce or eliminate pain. It’s much cheaper to learn about even a few herbs and wild plants for medicine. Brooke, please learn about this option. You will be so glad and amazed at what is on the earth to help us. And no supply chain issues. Love your videos!!

I've been living off grid for a little over a month now. I must say I have been able to get a lot more done without the distractions of TV and internet.. I've already started to germinate some seeds in the house to get ready for our planting season starts.. Love the video and thanks for the info on the books!! Hey Big Pappa, good on ya'! I am hoping to do this soon as well. Who knew it was so hard to find good land?
@@Laura-lr3sz I am lucky enough to have 1500 acres of land that has only one way in and out off a old gravel road in southwest Tn. It's full of game and 1 mile of river frontage on side of the property. And have all the heavy equipment from dozer, backhoe and tractors. We keep 8 horses and have cattle, goat's, rabbits and chickens. Our own sawmill and over 1000 acres of old growth hardwood that we have harvested just what we needed to build 3 cabins. The rd is easily able to disappear with dropping trees and using the dozer to remove any signs of a gravel rd. @@Laura-lr3sz yeah I'm lucky to have had such a life that's gotten me this far in my life.
I was typing a group could get together to buy a freeze dryer seconds before you said it. To expand on the idea, there are other ways people can do things as a group. Pooling resources and skills can be just the thing for those who can't do everything they need to do in case of an emergency.
The only thing to be extremely careful about is who to trust. In a serious situation, or even if someone panics when it's not so bad, their true character may be surprising. It might be your own family or a lifelong friend who turns to untrustworthy. Always take care and have a 'what if' backup plan. It's not wise to let everyone know everything you have and where you keep it.
I'm a what if girl. I've always been a prepper since the kind of jobs I had working outdoors I had to be prepared for anything. It was on a smaller scale and when I go grocery shopping I would always buy more than I needed on canned goods. Since the pandemic I've gone bigger and feel pretty good about the what ifs now. I have solar power generators, radios and charging banks. My husband thinks I'm nuts but look where we are so I win, I'm not nuts!
@@thiamata5346 The pandemic made it imperative because it was easy to see what was coming down the road. You're definitely not nuts. I'd rather have something and not need it, than need and not have it.
It can be hard to get through to people though. I tried telling some, who live in apartments, to get as many hand cranked items as possible for charging cell phones, emergency radio, flashlights etc.
Back-up your back-up plans. Get disposable shop towels to replace paper towels whenever possible because they're tougher and can be reused few times instead of a hand towel if washing clothes is not an option. Keep on hand soap that can be used for everything from you hair to the dishes. Ladies, if you have to buy the cheaper feminine products (yeah I know they can be lousy, I hate them too) to afford extra, do it. Look into the reusable methods. Sudden shortages on critical things can be a mess in more than one. Vinegar..so many uses. All kinds of tips and ways are out there to get through a shortage, but for too many it's not important...until is.
@@aevalk8369 totally agree with you. I've stocked up on prescriptions and OTC medications. I go to drug stores to pick up 3 of this and 3 of that but I go to several drug stores just to stock up on same stuff that they have rations on. You just never know and people need to get their mind into the what if thinking and start to prep. I've learned to freeze dry food, canning, freezing. Gotta do it.

We have survived many times weeks after hurricanes in Florida in heat and humidity that 99% of Americans would wilt under. It is never easy but we prepare every time.

I read all 3 of the John Matherson novels and found them to be quite thought provoking. Your tips to survive an extended power outage are great.
thanks!
I also read the trilogy of these books and they are LIFE CHANGING...and I don't just mean "really good book" I mean they actually change the way you think and look at the world, or even just your daily life choices. I think the depiction of this kind of event is so accurate...and of course we have to remember that the town the book is set in is actually very well organized so their situation is BETTER than most of the country.... the thing that really stuck with me from One Second After is what happens with the nursing homes. It's just not something most of us think about sadly
I’m an over the road trucker. Been using the bucket in my truck for over 25 years. Truckstop bathrooms are nasty. Use scented trash bags
I know someone who buys antibiotics from a pharmacy in India. I've been told having Ivermectin and Azithromycin is a good thing to have on hand.
It stinks, but between hurricanes and winter storms, I've had to last 8-9days at a time, usually a few times annually. You learn to adapt and each storm prepares you with lessons to be ready for the next event 👊

ONE SECOND AFTER left me with a Horrifying reality that I wasn’t Prepared. That was when the book came out 2009.
It emboldened me to get Prepped.
We survived two weeks living on a generator during and after Hurricane Sandy back in 2012. We moved to South Florida two years later where Hurricanes are prevalent from June 1st through November. Preparedness begins during that time, I'm so ready for whatever mother nature brings us.
I’ve been working on this for the last couple months and I can say that I can survive for two weeks right now. Thanks for putting this video out…I will be sharing it with others.
awesome!
This is an incredibly great video!
I lost power at my house in 2006 for 16 days. We had a hurricane come thru in Pennsylvania, and that's not a common occurrence, and the whole town i lived in was out of power for that whole time, neighboring towns were out too. My mom went and stayed with my aunt a few hours away but I stayed home with my boyfriend. We put all the food we had in coolers, and that only lasted a few days. After that we ate canned food and pantry food and used a small camp stove with a 1 pound propane tank. We used lanterns and candles at night, and thankfully it was in June so it wasn't too awful an we didn't need heat or air, thank god. I was 20 at the time so it was fun to us. We peed and used the bathroom in a bucket in the field behind our house. Did not have sawdust so we had to bury it after we were done unfortunately! but we thought it was an adventure and actually enjoyed it.
good experience!! and memories too
I grew up on in the hills of West Virginia in the 70s. We didn't have power or running water. We raised our food, vegetables chickens and hogs. We hunted squirrel and rabbit. Fished the river at the end of the road. We picked berries along the creek Bank. The creek right across the road had a waterfall we used as a shower. Took care of an orchard with apples and pears. We more than survived, we thrived because we worked for it. Best of times.
I'll have to watch later Brooke. Thanks for the video... 👍🏼✝️🇺🇲

In 2011 we had a total power outage in San Diego. As prepared as I thought I was, it was clear I had more to do. One big thing is that people do freek out. Tip: do not let your gasoline go below 1/2 tank. You cannot get gasoline if the power is out.

Thank you for giving such realistic ideas. So many times when people talk about survival they give ideas that are super expensive and/or just unattainable b/c of where someone lives. Your video is very helpful!!
Gosh I love your channel. Thank you. When my kids were little I started something called "Eco Wednesday" when we'd have to use no electricity in our apartment for the day (including not getting food out of the fridge). It was fun! We'd go outside and cook food on a little backpacking Coleman, or use the little wood source "stove" . The kids developed their own points system if they turned on a light out of habit etc. We did use the toilet though! It was challenging and interesting to see just how dependant we are on our grid living in the city.

Love watching your videos. You have so much energy and positivity. My husband and I live in the lower peninsula of Michigan and bought property on an Island in Michigan in 2018. We are in the process of building an off grid cabin on that property. We work until August of every year and bank our money. No mortgage for us. We are doing this out of pocket. Then we take a month or 2 off and go to the island property and work on the land and building. We stay in a tent and I cook all of our meals on the bonfire. I just wanted to thank you for your channel and wisdom. I found you from your husband’s channel when he linked to your solo building a cabin. I was watching his channel because I just purchased 13.6 acres of land and I’m needing to build a home for my boys and myself. My former husband and daughter left us two years ago and live in another nearby town. I’ve been a stay at home mom for the past 21years and full time caregiver to my 19 yr old middle son who has ID and ASD. We adopted all three of our kids as toddlers. I have gained so much encouragement that everything I’ve gone through the past couple of years will be made into beauty. The Lord has not forgotten me and I can actually feel now that He is truly leading me in all this mess. Thank you for giving me hope that our situation will work out and that I’ll be better then just okay. That living this life doesn’t have to be to someone else’s standards. That there’s much beauty and grace everywhere when I look for it. And I see it here on this channel. Bless you and your family. In Christ, Bobbie
Thanks for getting the word out. I went in with my friend to purchase a freeze dryer & we love it. It's such a additional tool for persevering our different harvests. Freeze drying is great. But be sure to let folks know, they should not just sit and eat freeze dried foods without drinking water. As they reconstitute in yer stomach, they will suck up all the moisture they can get. This can lead to stomach aches and other possible problems. So... Drink! Drink! Drink! And enjoy!

I've lived for over a week in a snow storm. No power. Kerosene heater, cooler buried in snow holding breakfast food and lunch meat, soups. Food for pets. Hauling water and feed twice a day to the horses thru 16 in snow. Actually loved it.
So this is what you've been doing! I was wondering what was up since we've had no videos for awhile. Look at how much Moose has grown! What a cute puppy and Maysie always so pretty. Your prepping pantry has come a long way..... Love the sprouts idea... going to try. My eyesight has deteriorated so much so I unable to read anymore but I'll have my daughter see if she can order this book in audio form for me. So glad that someone has finally come up with emergency meds kits. Wish those freeze driers weren't so darn expensive, most folks can't afford them, and though your suggestion of sharing the cost with friends and or family is a good one, not everyone has that option. I lived on a small Island for 5 years without power. No refrigeration, No AC, No TV, No lights. No internet. No electronics. Basically 18th century tech. Life is so much simpler. The cooking fire was the center of the community. Coming back to the modern world was jarring to say the last. People take for granted all of our "Modern Conveniences". I'm VERY sure that 95% of the people reading this have no frame of reference and no ability to adapt. The best way to adjust is to pull the main switch to the Off position and see how simple your life becomes. Most people that take the challenge last about 4 hours. Some even less.
hopefully some will take some action after watching this
One more comment , for an emergency water filter , use a pop bottle ( or any other type of juice or whatever that's clean ) add moss , sand very small rocks and top it off with more moss , then a piece of cloth on the small opening , cut off the bottom of the bottle , pour water in ( from a creek or small river ) , it will filter out a lot of impurities , then boil the water to kill other bacteria .
Excellent. Thanks for sharing your knowledge & enthusiasm.

So what is your point? There are winters with less snow or winters with huge storms. Brooke's just trying to get people to better prepare. My neighbor is younger. She goes to the grocery store every day to get fresh food for her families dinner. If she couldn't leave the house for 3 days she wouldn't have but maybe a couple cans of soup. She has 3 kids. Younger people didn't grow up with a parent who lived through the depression and were taught to keep a stock of food. This information is important to get out.
Also, most people won't fully follow through, but if they just stocked up with canned goods, TP and maybe a bucket toilet it might make their life a lot easier if they lost power for 2 weeks.
@@leahwhiteley5164 My point is global warming is a myth. Brooke happened to mentioned very subtle the the idea of global warming. I picked up on it and replied. Apparently you missed it and MY point.
@@thereturningshadow I did.
I was homeless and lived in a tent for 1 year, so I know I can do it:) Good video, Brooke:)

Raised by two parents who raised kids through the big depression lived this way all my life. They lived as if another one was coming tomorrow. I am 78 years now and even tho times are hard, so far things have not effected me all that much. been married 52 years { to the same lady even } broke but happy
This was really good! I am really a live in the now kind of gal… But I completely understand having some sort of preparation for events that are completely out of our control. Thank you for sharing your take on this and giving us wonderful ideas!
Thank you for the info and encouragement to be prepared. Have you ever tried colloidal silver for your daughter's strep?
Do you gragle with it 🤔
nope thankfully she's getting it less and less as she ages
Colloidal silver collects in your system and can cause serious problems, had an indirect relative whose skin turned gray, so be careful about that. I just use honey and lemon and gargle with salt water, maybe some vitamin C and echinacea tea.
I have a big question for you. Since you bought the medicine bag. There must be a time or an expiration date or advisement. Would you be able to share some of that information? Survival video thank you.
good question….and storage times and dates…..for how long?
it technically is about 2 years I believe it says, but could easily be drawn out by several more years with careful storage (5 years or more). i personally would use it if i needed it no matter how old it was. I mean if it doesn't work you're not "out" anything if you needed it. better to just try it.
Great video! I bought one of the Surviveware first aid kits a while back when you reviewed it. It’s by far the best first aid kit I have ever purchased! Will definitely check out the antibiotic kit. I agree with you 100% that we can put together better food to store and use in the future.
Another great video! Thank you Brooke! Good reminder for me to review my supplies and a needed push to replenish my emergency water! I had previously read Forstenchen's books, excellent suggestion! I always look forward to your new videos and enjoyed going over your past videos very much...
I am curious how much it costs to run the freeze dryer for 24 hours. Doing it twice weekly must make a noticeable difference in your bill, if you are running it on the grid.
I have had a freeze dryer for a year now and don't really notice much difference in the elec bill and I run mine non stop. The only time I didn't was when I had to send it back for repairs which Harvest Right paid for because it was still under warrenty.
Try canned venison. Delicious
Always enjoy your videos! Been prepping for some time but always like to hear what others do and how we can make improvements. Bless you!
I live on a small urban homestead in the middle of my city. We lost power for two weeks during the apocalyptic ice storm of October 2020. It was an adjustment but by the end of it we were well adjusted to living off of the grid power, and we’re a family of 7.
Brooke: "There's wars. There's pandemics."
Me: Brooke, you forgot.... THERE'S GOVERNMENT!
Hi Brooke, my wife and I enjoyed hearing you this morning on our local radio station KSCO Santa Cruz. Thanks for the good information ! Our best to you and Dave.
Great video. I planned enough, canning, freezing, and other things,I lasted all winter. I have enough to last until the next canning prep. It is so rewarding. I have done this for years.. thanks for adding to the prep list.
Hi 👋 dear, how are you doing?
AMAZING VIDEO! You have really opened my eyes on things to do for my family.
Hi Brooke. Thank you for these important tips for emergency times. I like all your videos. Cute pups. 🐶
Thank you for the information Brooke!! And thank you about letting us know on the freeze dryer!! That’s so cool!!
Thanks for the information and thanks for being you.
Thank you for making this video. I live in the Okanagan, Canada, and our fire seasons are brutal and getting worse. My family and I have always kept emergency kits, specifically for in case of fire and/or evacuations. I work with vulnerable adults, who may not understand such emergencies or have any family or friends to help, and spent most of last fire season helping them to pack their own kits - it was so frustrating. Clients took it seriously, as some could see the fires coming down the mountains near their homes, but my team dragged their feet the whole season. Multiple times, I got the "we'll look into it" when I asked about our limitations and expectations when helping our folks develop evac plans, and I was the only one to release emergency kit plans and recommendations and actively top-up kits throughout the months. So few take it seriously, until the emergency happens to them.
Hi from Tennessee. Great informative video. Thanks so much for sharing. Have a great day.
Ice storms in the northeast have left thousands of people without power for weeks. The 2008 and 1998 storms were devastating. A heat source is so important, not just to keep yourself warm, but also to keep your house warm enough to prevent your pipes from freezing and bursting and causing major damage to your home. Thanks for the info!
Brooke. You are so likeable. And so very helpful. Thanks for all of your great videos.
Exceptional video, thank you Brooke!!!! I took notes on this one. God Bless you and your loved ones.✝💖
Great video Brooke!
My husband and I live in the small cabin you see in my picture. We bought it from the Amish here in Maine. We also live 1 1/2 miles from the nearest plowed road. We bought a used snowmobile this year that turned out to be junk. Wasted$$$. There’s really no fixing it. Anyway….I’ve had to hoof it in and out to my car at the end of the road. I was a little disgusted the other day and thought of you. Put a smile on my face and said, “ Get outside and get happy.” 😃
I really did feel better after the exercise! Plus it gives me time to talk to God and enjoy this beautiful place we live in.
Thanks, Girl in the Woods, for creating & sharing this helpful information ☮️
Wow, that antibiotic kit is such a great thing to have. So glad to hear that company does this. I will definitely be in touch with them, thanks for sharing. Also so many great tips n tricks. Amazing channel, I can wait to watch more of your videos. My wife sent me the link, she follows you. I am now. Thank you for doing these videos, such good quality and realistic things to work on getting to be better prepared. All the best to you amd yours.
✌🇨🇦
thanks and welcome!
This is great Brooke. I have lots ready but this made me think of the other things I still need to get together and consider. Thanks a bunch!
