- I hate modern video game trailers, and you should too. I rarely see a good new video game trailer these days and in this video I give 4.5 tips to making and evaluating awesome game trailers.

They get away with making these sorts of trailers because they have 5 million power on Rise of Kingdoms

Funny because the zelda team didn't even want to advertise it at all and thats why they are giving us 0 advertising for Tears of the kingdom lol.

The newest TotK trailer definitely was an improvement and took a similar approach to the BotW one. Super excited for the game now.
The beginning isn't good but the rest is much better.
Honestly the best part of the BotW trailer is that the music they used literally isn't in the game, they wrote it for the trailer which makes it fit perfectly
I bet that would be the same for totk. I just hope that won't be the best theme in the game just like the botw trailer was the best theme in botw.

I know the game itself isn't perfect but the official trailer for Atomic Heart from 5 years back still has a special place in my heart.
I genuinely still get chills even to this day when I rewatch the Breath of the Wild presentation trailer. It is unmatched brilliance.
EDIT: Forget Breath of the Wild's presentation trailer, holy hell that new Tears of the Kingdom trailer is unmatched. Especially the score. It is a damn shame that score is almost certainly made solely for the trailer, because there are parts of it I would pay to have extended into a full track - that Jazz riff in particular.

Now I want the full vid about the BotW Trailer. It's also my favorite Trailer, even today when I watch it this Trailer is unreal for me how good it is.
Yes I still get goosebumps every time I watch it even though I beat the game. TOTK trailers just can't match up the BOTW 3rd trailer.

@@hollowhenry04 I’m sorry but that wasn’t a very flattering voice line for him. Maybe it was edited poorly, or not even the final delivery of the line, but Matt’s lines in the recent trailer felt 100% less forced villain than the previous one.

One of the trailers that I love the most is a fan trailer of Disco Elyisum. Half of the reason why is because the music is just so damn cool, and the moments that the creator uses in the trailer is just so fitting of the tone for the game as well.

Every time I watch the BOTW trailer I would genuinely cry because of how good the music and the transitions are. Which makes me sad because the trailer for the new BOTW game doesn't give me that feeling

I love the DMC5 trailer. The way you get hit back to back by the words “Capcom” and “demons” only to have someone who looks like the reboot Dante only for it to be revealed to be Nero is such a fun rollercoaster of emotions for fans of DMC.

For me, the #1 trailer of all time will always be Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain's trailer with Nuclear playing in the background. The one trailer that made me go and play an entire series just to catch up with the newest entry.
Same it was also my first true introduction to Metal Gear and having played the entire series I can say that trailer definitely sold a lot of people. It was do cinematic and well-crafted. Not to mention the lyrics of Nuclear fit V very well.
MGSV's Red Band trailer with Elegia in the background was the one that sold it for me. It just had this overly morose vibe that I was looking for in a Cold-War era game.

With Dead Cells the effort they put into the animated trailer is what made me want to get the game

Here from the future just to say that Nintendo equalled if not surpassed the 2017 BoTW trailer with the new TotK Trailer. Fear not, amazing trailers do still exist!

I've sunk hundreds of hours into BoTW, and that trailer still gave me goosebumps. Please, someone take me back so I can experience it for the first time again, I'm on my KNEES
It's not just the trailer, I'd do anything to get to play breath of the wild for the first time again. Game is a fucking masterpiece, everything from the soundtrack to the gameplay to the combat is perfect. The DLCs feel so true to the game and add so much content to an already massive game. Every moment of gameplay is cinematic, even those moments where youre just running across hyrule field or freezing your ass off in the gerudo highlands. The few characters we recieve actual dialogue from are masterfully crafted with excellent voice actors and amazing and true-to-the-series designs. There are secrets around every corner, even among the absolutely massive world capable of holding *900 collectibles* spread out *sparsely.* The only part I dislike about BoTW is the low durability of the weapons but even that caveat isn't enough to knock this game down below a 10/10. Fucking masterpiece of a game, I really hope they didn't fuck up ToTK

@@TheBigchekka don't get me wrong, I'm hyped for the sequel, but it's not as exciting as the first game was (for me, at least) since we're already familiar with how the game looks, feels, the characters, etc- of course I want to learn more about the new game and am looking forward to it, but going in without much knowledge is a bit more exciting.
One of my favorite game trailers is the Echoes of the Eye reveal trailer for Outer wilds.
It starts off with a cozy little tune familiar to anyone that’s played the game, but slowly morphs into this deafening drone as a strange new secret is revealed to be hiding within the solar system.
Then, the music cuts, and the screen goes dark before five words appear: “There’s more to explore here.”
Preach! Whenever I tell my friends to play Echoes of the Eye, I always make sure they see the trailer first because it's just too good to miss.

this is seriously one of the best videos i've seen in a while. i usually have a pretty low attentio span and yet for the entire duration of the video i never clicked out or even thought of anything else. the pacing was just right,being very fast in the bird sections and being interesing enough while describing trailers for some games that i never played. then,you really won me over talking about that botw trailer. seriously,i think it's actually impossible to not get chills while watching it. you gained a new sub my friend,i hope you can replicate other bangers like this one.

personally i believe another big issue is this huge amount of spoilers everywhere. like damn kingdom hearts 3 really showed almost all its key moments in the trailers
Also the fanbase constantly spoils stuff. The second a game comes out you already have asshole youtubers putting major spoilers in their thumbnails.

Another great video, trailers are extremely important and there's definitely a right way to do them. Hopefully the industry starts picking up on these strong points because it's been lacking a little bit lately.

The Tears of the Kingdom trailers have been amazing so far imo. They leave me with more questions than answers, and they make me want to go buy the game right away to see what's gonna happen. Ganondorf's voice line was a bit cheesy though and I would've rather not had it, but all the previous trailers for the game have knocked it out of the park, especially the initial reveal

Every time i see BOTW trailer i feel weak, the first time i saw it i cried, now i just get goosebumps but if i wait enough time, i can shed a little tear when i come back to it once in a while. Truly a beautiful trailer.
Really, the first trailer for Tears of the Kingdom was amazing. Even though it showed surface-level stuff, it's presented in such a way that left me hooked for more info for years. It knew how to draw anticipation, which is something the other trailers for the game sadly fail to do as well.

Totk trailers are being held back heavily because the amazing Zelda team dosen't want to spoil too much. The game will be legendary though.
Yeah, I think they've spoken before about how they didn't want to show as much as they did, but Nintendo's marketing team insisted, and for good reason. A lot was riding on Breath of the Wild, so Nintendo put a lot more marketing behind it than they usually do. They're on much more stable ground now, so Nintendo is a lot more willing to let the game sell itself rather than put a big push behind it. That, and pretty much their entire marketing strategy since COVID has been about announcing games only a few months before release and giving more info. on them a month prior. Tears of the Kingdom was unfortunate enough to be announced before the pandemic and face the brunt of a fanbase snarling for content after 4 years.
Just because Nintendo doesn’t have to advertise it doesn’t mean they’re doing the right sort of advertising

I think FF16 Ambition trailer is my favorite of all time right now. The beginning half is slower but it establishes the world and lore, and then the second half goes full action with such an amazing orchestral piece behind it

Like Nintendo saw this and just aight bet and proceed to drop the most fire trailer since the Australian wild fires.
There's this sound effect you hear in a lot of trailers for movies and games now where it sounds like all of the oxygen is being sucked out of a space and it always leads into a boom where the on-screen action will start. Sorry, I suck at explaining this. I've never put a ton of thought into trailers. But that's something I see/hear a lot lately that irritates me for whatever reason.

The Silksong trailer was constructed that way on purpose because everyone thought it was going to be a DLC…it was hyped up for years beforehand as being an expansive DLC where you get to explore Hallownest as Hornet, a lot of people’s favorite character, and how her acrobatic nature would change the gameplay. So when the trailer dropped and it was revealed as a vast NEW kingdom, with NEW towns, and quests to do (unlike in Hollow Knight) it was hype as f***. That’s why it was made that way.
I normally like your videos but this specific criticism is completely disconnected from the environment in which the trailer dropped. Team Cherry knows what they’re doing, period.
Supplemental point: that trailer didn’t originally launch on the Nintendo RUclips channel, or even the Team Cherry RUclips channel. It was ORIGINALLY released on the Team Cherry website, which meant the first people to see it weren’t the general public, but specifically those people that loved Hollow Knight enough to go there for that reason. This trailer wasn’t an advertisement for the game - it was tailored for those fans that had been waiting years for Hornet DLC news, that had been sitting in the Hollow Knight subreddit waiting for anything new to talk about.
Team Cherry knew their audience, and gave them the hypest sh*t ever, just for them. I mean I STILL watch that trailer every few months to relive the f***ing majesty of when I first saw it, and get the same chills I got when I woke up at 3am to watch it in the first place. Just because Nintendo posted it on their channel later doesn’t mean it was constructed for Nintendo channel viewers - that’s just a huge corporation piggybacking off the unmitigated hyper-success of a talented developer, as expected.
Like I said, Team Cherry knows their audience and did right by them. Which is why we’re so happy to keep waiting for the game, even all this time later…we know it’s going to be amazing.
But he makes a good point. The text was completely unnecessary. You already get the big reveal of a new kingdom with new towns and new quests. Unless you're an idiot, you don't need the big text highlighting what Hornet is doing because you have eyes.
I'd argue in favor of the Stellarjay, that the text is counterproductive. It would've done a lot more to build up to the hype if there was no text until the very end of the trailer, with the reveal that rather than an expansion; it's a sequel.

@@VioletAeonSnowfield I think you underestimate the creative ways in which the Hollow Knight community interprets meaning and lore from trivial, random things. If the screen didn’t specifically say that it’s a new kingdom, then the HK community would 100% theorize that it’s just a new area within Hallownest, and we’re still in the same kingdom as before. If the screen didn’t specifically say that it’s a new town, they would 100% theorize that what we’re seeing is actually Dirtmouth in the past, before the winds of time have swept it all away, and the game actually takes place 30 years earlier, and maybe we’ll get to see the Pale King and explore this last kingdom in a totally new way.
Like I said, Team Cherry knows their audience, and knows when to be specific or when to be vague/mysterious. They chose the former for a reason.

That doesn't make any sense. If they theorize one thing and then get proven wrong and are faced with something else altogether; they're not going to suddenly be upset or disappointed or like they were lied to.
Team Cherry made a mistake.
It is not that Tears of The Kingdom will be a bad game, as many are taking it. It is just that it had a disappointing trailer compared to its old Breath of the Wild counterpart.
