- "INSANITY AT ITS FINEST" Says the sign out front, and it's not far off the mark! The WILDEST time on Route 66 is probably to be had right here in the home of the REAL LIFE inspiration for Mater from Cars, the owner and proprietor of the Sandhills Curiosity shop, Harley Russell! Plus see weird museums, ride the mother road through the Oklahoma skyline and see a scene straight out of the Grapes of Wrath!
Yep, Another Randomland Adventure!

Maybe the greatest video in the history of ever . Wow that guy rules
Yup definitely
People will watch these video 50 years from now.
Harley my favourite guy on Route 66. I was lucky enough to see Annabelle do the act with him back in 2005
Harley is a real life American pirate, he looks like he came out of central casting
Yes’m he is he lives in my home town
normally don't comment much but felt the need to here. First off my hubs and I love to watch you. good for you and what you do. Anyways the way you represented this cool dude was so awesome. the last song he sang (yesterday) and the story behind him and his wife touched us both.... BIG TIME. Who knew I would be crying!! But I did and thank you for this... talk about random.... so so touching in every way. keep up your great work!!! its appreciated!!
I was thinking the same thing about hearing him sing Yesterday and reading the information being provided at the same time.. Made me think of that song in a totally different frame of mind..
Yes!! I completely agree!
did anyone else cry at the end of this Justin Scarred video? so emotionally charged...
ballerinagonewild still crying here lol
Oh yeah, this brought me to tears.
Although I've loved them all, I think this may be my favorite of your Route 66 videos so far. I'm so glad to see Harley is still going strong, as I was wondering if he may have retired after Annabelle passed. I'd love to be able to see him on my trip next month.
Wow, that was amazing. Harley sure is a character! This is what makes America. So glad you were able to shine a light on him.
"Guess you guys aren't ready for that yet, but your kids are going to love it."
Most fitting movie quote.
This has to be my favorite video of the trip so far. I love Harley! I'm so glad he keeps doing what he loves even after the passing of his wife. That really touched my heart!
One of my favorite episodes all time! Dude on guitar was something else loved every minute.
I was singing Harley's Amarillo by morning on the way home in the car ha ha... with, the Harley voice LOL :D He sure is something else! I can't stop thinking about him and his life.
The real life Mater kind of scares me.
Says Ms. Lizzy Borden.
My first road trip on my own was in 1979. Since 90 onwards I have driven coast to coast every 2 years. Thanks for documenting! Bringing back lots of memories. Best was with my daughter in 2003. Many route 66 stories . Hopefully our paths cross.
Fantastic Ruprecht impersonation!!! :D LOL I'm gonna get baby boy a dad gum pop??!! LOL!! Did you tell guttermouth Mater ;) REAL MEN don't have to drink?! LOL That guy is WILD! LOL So sad his wife is gone now, I bet she was a real kick in the pants too =) RIP Annabelle. My Dad likes Roger Miller, he sometimes still goes around singing... chug a lug LOL
Check out Harleys stuff on his fb page. You will see Annabella as part of the act !
Thanks!!
Apple Valley Hillbilly Garden and Toyland hey I live in Marshall County at other end from where you guys are.
I swear every time I watch one of Justin's vids I fall in love with old Route 66 it's corky residents even more.
😭💕
Harley is an Hidden treasure in Oklahoma and is actually a very accomplished musician and most people have no clue about that.
Justin this series you are doing is the best series I have ever watched. Better than anything CNN or CBS SUNDAY MORNING has ever produced you should receive an award for for this. Thank you for educating me and entertaining me at the same time plus taking me places that I've never been before and want to go see. Keep up the good work
Amarillo by Morning is one of my favorite songs, never heard it sung quite like that though! What a wonderful character. Almost cried at the end when I read about his wife.
The footnote at the end about Annabelle and Ruprecht hit me in the feels, man! Eyes sweaty with respect... What an amazing personality he is, I'll tell you what! ;)
LOL! I almost died at the "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" opening...thank you for that reminder of such a great movie!
Another great adventure. Harley Russell is quite the interesting personality. My one year old enjoyed his singing and stood at the screen clapping. :)
If there is a Grand Prize for Randomness in videos you Justin have won it ! God bless Harley and Route 66
Every time I watch Justin's work, I think "Well He can't top that" and then he does. Every time!
Thanks for that
This has got to be the ...best...video....ever! Romping through creepy museum storage - abandoned by the staff - abandoned road - and the awkwardly cool confrontation of cultures! This is the best. Worthy of the end of year highlight reel!
Love all your vlogs, but this by far has been my favorite, all due to Harley and his lost Annabelle. I could watch him sing all day, you did him great justice and the ending with "Yesterday" and the description was very powerful. I want to go visit, just to experience Harley in person.
Justin, very, very good job on this one.
Wow! I never quite knew how absolutely awesome old Route 66 is! Thank you so much for showing it to me/us!
Awesome ! You can definitely hear in Harley 's voice that he was the inspiration for Mater.
Thanks for sharing your time with Harley Russell. What a unique guy. A kind of kindred spirit. I'm really enjoying your trip down the Mother Road. Stay safe.
Wow. I can only hope I can be that vital and full of fun when I'm 71... which isn't all that long from now for me; 19 years. The tag story of his wife brought a tear to my eye, but inspiration that he's "still going strong".
Keep bringing us these amazing stories and glimpses into Americana, Justin!! And we'll keep following! Thank you!!! :-)
Quite frankly the most wildest awsomest entertainer so far on Route 66 ( 11 mentions this ep) He was like a hybrid of Seasick Steve, Tom Waites and Lemmy with maybe some Jim Carrey and American Pickers thrown in for good measure. Yesterday was almost heartbreaking, you could tell he loved his partner so much. The museums were fantastic, no glass cabinets you could touch stuff and have a good root about in there. Thanks Justin for the best episode ever.
As i watched in tears of joy, this is Bye FAR your best video as of yet Justin. Meeting Harley is on my bucket list for sure, you are blessed to have met such a man
Three years later and this is still a wonderful video. Thanks, Justin
Heater: "I'm not stuck in here with you, you're stuck in here with me"
Best video yet on the route 66 adventure Justin. Harley is awesome, I can't imagine what the show was like with Annabelle. Thanks again for the adventure.
Why does this only have 16K views?! This was one of the best Vlogs Justin! Great job!
Awesome as always! That dude Harley is what "old timey" people would call a "hoot!"
The guy in Erick was hilarious. Will have to see if hes still around. Love that you like my home state so much. We are pretty proud of it.
Oh my gosh. I heard him bellow for a moment like Big Al. I want to hear him sing Blood on the Saddle. That was incredible and kudos to you for following that up. That's like going on stage after a great comedian. I could feel the tension in the room and I was glad to not be there myself. It is like the circus and clowns to me, but how thrilling and how talented. Perfect episode. I will watch it again.
I can't stop smiling or crying with JOY! I think... yep, I'm Happy! Best Randomland EVER!
Wow, didn't think Justin could outdo himself any more on this trip, but this was another awesome collection of stops!
"Baby boy" 😂Harley obviously doesn't see Justin as an equal! Lol!
Lol! That was an identical impersonation of Steve martin in Dirty rotten scoundrels! Ruprecht!
His rendition of RT66 should be your them song for this journey. What a treasure this guy is.
Yeeeha. Go Harley. What an amazing character and very touching knowing about his wife. Keep up the great work Justin, it's so interesting to see this stuff here in the UK.
Great video, Justin! Thanks for taking us along for the ride!
really good video Justin..I'm watching more and more of your videos..this one takes the cake. :)
Thank you Justin. That was awesome. And you're getting closer and closer to OKC.
Wow! I honestly got a little emotional watching it at the end. Justin you should go back again when you have the chance. Thank you for showing us that moment. I hope that someday I'll go there.
?!?! I'm speechless 😶
This is fantastic.
You are the best of any route 66 or anything thing else. More entertaining and detail , the other guy , Harley is part of what America great. Where else could find entertainment like that.
That was cool seeing the Rodger Miller museum! I was in Big River in high school and loved it so much!
When he pointed the camera to a hay bale and said "HAY! We passed the state line..."
I slapped myself lol
Great to see Eddie Van Halen is still making music and who knew he moved to Oklahoma!
Really good video. Reminded us of our visit last year. Enjoyed talking to Harley, but this was the first time we had heard him play. It was really good.
Dang, Mater is straight up legit...I love that guy! Small town gems and the characters we meet along the journey is what makes all the miles and near sleepless nights worth it. Safe travels out there Justin.
Great video! So fun to see you exploring old school Americana Justin! Harley is awesome! And you have seriously inspired me to watch Grapes of Wrath! I grew up taking family road trips every summer and I'm going to continue that with my kids! Warms my heart to see someone from my generation who feels the same way I do about exploring our country's history!
That blog was truly beautiful. Great work Justin.
I was there last week (it was closed) and all I could think, while taking pics, was "what kind of person does this!?" Now I know, it's Harley! Thanks, Justin!
Also, I think I ran into those European bikers at the Cadillac Ranch!
A daggum duck spit in my eye when you shared Harley's story at the end
Justin this was a fabulous piece of film-making! Your skills at putting a story together and telling that story just keep getting better. And now the whole Mob is going to have to call you Baby Boy ALL THE TIME! First Roger Miller song you need to hear: King of the Road.
I have been watching your videos for quite a long time, and this might be the most entertaining one. I had to watch twice because of Harley. I love when you catch live local musicians. Sooo good!
Harley looks like a must see for our trip in August, but I'm not sure my kids will handle it : )
This is your best trip ever on ol' route 66 Justin. Keep up the seriously awesome work.
Harleys a hoot! All those old signs he has are so awesome. Great vlog once again.
The original Mater seems like an amazing guy with a talent to rock out!
The most Justin of days. Historic, interesting and mind blowingly bizarre.
This vlog definitely captures the true spirit of Route 66. You never know who you will meet or the stories that will be told.
Wonderful callback to "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels"!
Justin... it keeps getting better with every episode. Really diggin the series! Keep going!
What an awesome experience that must be in person! Thank you for sharing!
This is by far the best vlog I ever seen!!
Bless Harley & Annabelle
Justin great video like always. That guy was awesome I started tearing up in the end..its pretty crazy he sang that song since I woke up with that song in my head this morning. Thanks for all the great vids.
As a guy who has to go to Oklahoma for family reunions, I don't think I have ever been that happy to be in Oklahoma. Heck, I don't my family who live in Oklahoma are that excited to be in Oklahoma.
....one last one...Oklahoma
Harley is wonderful, that last part cause me to tear up. Justin, this was one of your best.
Love the videos and going along on your ride down Route 66. That was a great find on the old/original section section of Route 66...very narrow seeing that it was two way traffic.
Awesome ! Never can get enough Harley. Love his place. You doing a great job on covering Route 66, Justin. Love your dorn shots and your stick on the Mother Road. Oh, Roger Miller had another classic song called, You Can't Roller Skate In A Buffalo Herd.
Harley was a unique guy. We need more of those kind of people in the world.
Seriously funny stuff on this one Justin. Nicely done, especially the Loddie stuff.
Wow. That was a great video. Thank you for sharing your adventures with all of us out here watching in RANDOMLAND. Drive safe.
I'm so lucky to be able to watch these videos and witness this adventure. such magic.
You guys are funny and enjoyable! Especially since it's all about my favorite bucket list thing to do. Spending time going down Route 66!!!
I can just imagine you singing Huck's part in "Worlds Apart" from Big River. That would be awesome.
I enjoyed you videos so much, I traveled from Canada, and did most of route 66. Thanks for all your videos.
Roger Miller is awesome man. His music is so much fun! "You can't roller skate in a buffalo heard!"
It is Mater!! lol
Never before have i seen something so real, so genuine. Just seeing Harley would be worth the entire trip!
This is my favorite series Justin
Justin thanks for going to places like this. Would never have even saw anything like this. I love living vicariously through you and Adam. Keep up the great work.
This is awesome! and that Back to the Future reference was great!
You know....I've been traveling Route 66 from LA for about a week and a half, it was supposed to be a month long journey with myself and my 'fiance'....but circumstances sent me on this Journey alone. Just made it to Joplin....and...i have all the camera gear and knowledge of Route 66 but I just had too much sadness in my heart to enjoy it....so I rushed through it, in my own head.
I happened upon your 66 videos through Adamthewoo.....Thank-You for making the videos that I had planned to make and for brightening an otherwise gloomy night for me here in Joplin, MO (Last night was Shamrock, Texas and my checking account being emptied by a cc skimmer).
Anyway, Thank-you for bringing me a little happiness tonight.
-@nationalcomedy (Ben)
George Strait and The Beatles have nothing on Harley.. I am so glad you had a chance to share that with us.. And yeah the Pickers would be in Heaven in those places of his..
Good job Justin. One of your best vlogs yet. Bravo !
hahahahaha. This was amazing. I couldn't believe what was happening, but i never wanted it to end. Wasn't prepared for the eye sweating at the end. Sweat of respect right? lol. Touching story man. Keeping going Justin. Positive vibes.
I like experiencing this level of craziness with the safety of a computer screen.
Dude I literally teared up during the second song... that's some beautiful guitar playing right there. he really loves the songs he's playing... too awesome. thank you Justin. you have been a huge positive influence in my life during dark times. it's amazing that I can say that yet I've never met you in person. love you man. have a great 2017!
One of the best episodes of the trip
Dirty rotten scoundrels is one of the most underrated films ever.
That Dude is awesome! Seriously worth your whole trip!
Hey Justin, Roger Miller also was a part of Disney too! He was the voice of the rooster in Disney's Robin Hood and was known for his Whistle Stop song in the title credits.
wow!!! That is so cool. I definitely need to stop in that part of Oklahoma.
I agree with the daily woo. Awesome. I wish I could have been there. How fun and how route 66! Loved this video...
Love George Strait, made my day to hear that Classic. Keep up the interesting videos !!!!!!!
Probably one of your best videos ever!
