That air hose at the Texaco was for the bell that rang when a customer drove up over it. When I worked at a gas station while it was real busy I hated hearing that bell. Thanks for not stepping on it.

The hose laid across the drive at the gas station was used to activate a bell that would ring as you drove in, sending the attendant running out to your car.

Loved seeing Pontiac, It's great when a town displays so much public art, those murals were beautifull and the museum was one of the best you've shown us and you managed to fit "Route 66" in a whopping 33 times this episode, not as many as the epic 59 mentions near the start of your road trip but getting back up there.

Nice to see you give some love to Pontiac. Much of my youth was spent living there. Born and Raised. They really have taken on Route 66 in the last Decade. Always enjoy going back home. I had many bike rides on old route 66 from Pontiac to Chenoa. Good times.

    Justin-
Your videos are amazing. I love the Route 66 series. Everything you do has inspired me to create my own travel based channel.
I am not nearly as comfortable as you on camera and I wish I could be that funny on the fly, but I am trying to make it work
Last summer (2021) I drove from Santa Monica to St. Louis on Route 66 with my then 15 year old son.
This week we hit the road and picked up where we left off in St. Louis and are heading to Chicago to basically “finish” the route.
I’ve watched your entire series going to Chicago and stopped and saw much of the same stuff you show in your videos. I don’t want to copy, but I do find much of that fascinating.
We used the passport to get us to some of the more obscure places.
We’ve had lots of fun. I even watched The Ghost and the Darkness prior to leaving on this part of the trip so I can enjoy seeing the Lions of Taslvo. I saw the movie once back when it came out.
I just wanted to let you know I love what you do, and that you motivated this 50 year old to try making travel videos. I wanted to be a filmmaker, but that never really worked out, so doing these videos allows me to stay creative while also making videos to serve has home movies for my boys.
Finishing the route is going to be bittersweet. While our vacation still goes on for another 8 days, this particular portion is going to feel different.
Almost a year to the day when we started from Santa Monica we are going to be ending. It’s honestly something I never thought I would care about. Route 66 was never told to me, I didn’t know much about it until I started looking into it a few years ago. Now looking at finishing the route was something I never expected to do.
It was so much fun, the places we went, what we saw and the fun we’ve had is truly something I will never forget.
Doing this last leg with my younger boy and my wife is something great. Like any sequel, we spent a little time refreshing the audience with the 1st movie (I.e. starting in St. Louis where the last trip ended) and then heading into Illinois and doing the route with new members added to the cast (my younger son and my wife) and you have the perfect recipe for a sequel that could be better than the original 😂😂😂
I just wanted to say Thanks for the inspiration.
    Schleep Well!

I traveled west with my parents on much of Route 66 in 1954, and even then, there were sections of old decaying pavement paralleling the then-current road. In the mountains, you'd often see the old road going up and down like a roller coaster, where the newer pavement was straightened out with cuts and fills. In some places, we'd see places where a piece of unpaved dead-end road veered uphill off of the main highway, where truckers who lost their brakes could get their runaway rigs safely stopped.

Hey Justin, you mentioned wanting to stay at an "old timey" bed and breakfast. You should try the Inn at 835 in Springfield, Illinois on your way back to California. Pontiac's courthouse looks like it belongs in Downtown Disney. Looking at that Texaco I realized that kids "nowadays" are robbed of the fun of jumping on the little hose and hearing the bell ring. I'm sad (and apparently older than I thought)

Interesting about the former police headquarters shaped like a Derringer. . I love the semi-circular glass tiled area on the corner there. Guess that was innovative for 1941. I loved the door on the washroom at the restored Standard Oil filling station at Odell, and I was so lucky to get to see the beautiful pressed tin roof from inside.

The war museum part was cool. I got all my fathers Vietnam uniforms and other things after he died and I love to look through it sometimes. And like you, I recently became fascinated with old gasoline pumps, signs, etc. Original ones go for big money! Thankfully replica pumps aren't to much. :) #Route66
