I have been to Meramec Cavern twice. The first time when I was a kid. We would drive from San Diego to Lorain and Elyria Ohio, where my parents were from. One year we stopped at the Caverns and went on the tour. This was in the early 70's, as my father passed away in 1974 just after my 10th birthday, the same day as my first trip to Disneyland, which my father did not go. I will always remember those vacation road trips from California to Ohio when I was growing up.
I'm thrilled to see that the Wagon Wheel has been remolded since we stayed there 15 years ago. I was so excited to stay there and then so disappointed when it reeked of cigarettes smoke. It was in my PJ's for the rest of our vacation and bugged me so bad I ended up buying new ones. But the old motel was so supper cool I will return again some day. I remember the rocking chair too. Enjoy seeing all of these sites again through your eyes, we traveled all of 66 and it was a blast!
I went there when I was 12 years old, I'm 55 now. My dad told me that this was the Outlaw Jesse James Hideout!! I can't believe they still have that patriotic theme video still playing at the end of the tour. It's a magnificent creation of nature for sure. Thanks for the tour Justin 8-)
Holy crimeny I LIVED in that motel for two weeks!!! They've built new stuff since then, but I and other guests sheltered in the main basement during a tornado in 2009!!! What a small world, Justin!!!
That was awesome... Meramec Canyon brought back memories... Especially the little show at the end... And it is true, when we went there years ago, we came out to find that every single car had a bumper sticker on it... I still have ours in a box someplace and if I remember right it was black with bright orange letters. Terrific, Justin...
My oh my 💓 I've done this cavern at least a dozen time in my life...and it's still one of my faves thank you for the memories Justin...keep up the good work ...
Got to say, these videos are 1000% more entertaining than all the other political stuff on RUclips. Like taking a political vacation! Please don't do politics Justin. Keep it real and entertaining bro. Love your vids.
So cool!! I found a Mobile Gargoyle sign while flying fishing in a river near my former home. Bullet holes, and rust had damaged it, but I packed it out with me when I was done fishing.
As a person in the Stl area and grew up in the Stl area I have been there numerous times however I'll never forget once in the late 1980s (when I was a kid) we went and the power went out in the cave. When we got out and came outside we found a tornado hit the campground outside. It was a mess. Later come to find out some people were killed. Not our most fun time there - certainly not the caverns fault. We love to come there in the summer cause it's so nice down there.
Hi Justin Scarred. Great video. l'm really enjoying your Route 66 Journey. I've watched all of them from beginning. Meramec Caverns look Amazing thanks for showing everyone all these Amazing Places on Route 66. 😃
I drive right by Meramec Caverns multiple times a year. I'll be doing it again next week. Maybe I'll stop by this time. Thanks for letting me know what I've been missing!
I discovered your channel because I wanted to see videos of Meramec caverns. I'm subscribed because this video is awesome. I plan to binge watch your videos soon.
Justin you are doing a fantastic job with your tour of Route 66, the first thing I thought about when I saw the kave was an earthquake being Californian. keep up the good work Buddy!
Just catching up after being away for a week; loved the Hank Hill with the propane; was waiting for a "cave of wonders" line though...so much to see on Route 66!
8:41 Harbie!!!!!!!!!! Justin, There use to be two of these Harbie statues sitting on top of large concrete pillars on Harbor Blvd in Garden Grove at the entry way of an old RV Park named "CC Camperland RV Park". It was located between the Garden Grove Target and the older location of Joe's Italian Ice. Last I saw of its location was just a vacant lot.. Google some images for "CC Camperland RV Park" and you'll see pictures of the old Harbie statues on their pillars back in the day...
In New Mexico they also have a similar cave, called Carlsbad Caverns. Walt Disney actually stayed a night there all alone, just to experience it. That is what inspired the look of the caves in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride.
And, you have to love the light show at the end of the cave tour! The expression on your face is priceless. Is this a Disney plus-ed up attraction? Caves are so much better with colored lights on all of the cathedral rock.
Just after you were there the reptile ranch that's on the left right before the caverns had a massive fire. none of the animals were hurt but they lost 9 freezers worth of food and all of their yard equipment.
I love watching your travels. I have been learning so much. Even got my husband watching a few videos. I just looked up Robert... he died at the age of 22. So sad. I plan to keep traveling with you.
You need to come back to Missouri snd go to Fantastic Caverns. It is one of 3 natural ride thru caves. Was explored during the Civil War by a team of women. It is so cool
I live on the Merrimack River in Massachusetts. A while ago my mother mentioned that the word "Merrimack" or something similar also appears in a bunch of places in Missouri. But she was probably thinking of variants of "Meramec". They're both words from Algonquian languages, but according to Wikipedia, Merrimack means something like "place with strong current" whereas Meramec means "river of ugly fish".
You should stop in at Litchfield Il. There is a Rt. 66 Museum and diagonal across the street is the Ariston Cafe, a restaurant that was build in 1935 and still has the original decor. You and Adam would love it. It is also on the National Registry of Historic Places.
"Cities Service" was the former name of Citgo. It was called that because it actually started as a gas and electric supplier to local utilities. Then they got into the oil business, made some big strikes, and were then forced to divest from the electric stuff by antitrust regulations.
Caves are so fascinating, I like to imagine what it'd be like to go into one but I'm unfortunately unable to. We have the Mega Cavern out here in Louisville which some of my family has visited. You should check it out!
OK, mind blown --- I have heard the story about the paper bumper stickers and sticky bumper sticker before but from an old-timer connected to the Luray Caverns in Va. seriously the exact same story. Weeeiiiirrrrd.
Wow, did you look at the schize of that cave?! That cave was amazing. It bet it felt so good in there. Free air condition! You should have sang the Banana Boat Song in there for the echo. :)
Theres a cave i visited in texas with the most impressive stalagmites and stalactites ive ever seen. It's the Natural Bridge Caverns in san antonio and it is gorgeouss
Why write a Yelp review when you can just do a video! I love how adventurous you are. Braving these hotels just for the nostalgic experience. I dropped out of school because I said all the history I need to know I can get from Randomland.
Seeing my own state and other places through your eyes is Soooo Cool! You are a pretty Awesome guy! I found your channel through my friends the Bloodshed Brothers whom I love like my own kids! I would also love to see my home town of St. Joseph Missouri through your eyes. The town claims is it's 'where the Pony Express started and Jesse James ended.' The Hannibal / St. Joseph Railroad train is here. Lot of history here. California trail head. Last stop before heading West across the plains. Aunt Jemima pancake invented here as well as the Saltine crackers we have today. We are about an hour west of Chillicothe, the home of slice Bread and about and half hour north of Kansas City where as you know Walt Disney spent time before heading to California. So there is Lots to see in the area!!! Would love to show you around if it would ever fit into your plans! ........ B+ positive brother (insert smiley face here) lol
If you found that impressive, you should plan a trip out to Carlsbad Caverns in Carlsbad New Mexico. (Take Ally, it's a very romantic cave ;) I guarantee you won't be disappointed. Bring lunch with you, you can actually eat in the main chamber of the cave, and it's so large, you WILL be hungry by the time you get there. They have a working elevator as well, in case you don't hike well, or you are exhausted from the hike in. They also have special tours to side caves that are not prepared for the general public where you can get the feel for actual spelunking. Non handrails, stairs or ladders, just rope and grit.
Hey I work at Meramec Caverns and you’ll be pleased to hear we finally got bumper stickers!
I gotta say... it's a really out-of-body experience to have someone document things and places you've grown up seeing.

These Route66 series vlogs are just the best thing ever
The Meramec Cave is now on my bucket list

Haha, I love that tour guide. “It went right down that drain hole. I DON’T know where it goes.”
At 06:20 is my new favorite thing you've seen so far. The mural of "Danny's Gas Hole".
I've never been more proud to be a Danny.
I've been in a few caves, but nothing like that. That cave was amazingly beautiful !!! Thanks for the tour !!
Went to Merrimack cave when I was a kid. They also used to have a ferry boat ride. Thanks for helping me remember that trip.
Your videos just keep getting better and better. Love the different voices you use. Randomland rules!
My oh my 💓 I've done this cavern at least a dozen time in my life...and it's still one of my faves thank you for the memories Justin...keep up the good work ...
This is awesome. I'm from Cuba MO, so I have stayed here several times. Awesome to see it again!
You're the only RUclipsr that I'll invest 20+ minutes to, on one video. Good stuff.
Got to say, these videos are 1000% more entertaining than all the other political stuff on RUclips. Like taking a political vacation!

That Hank Hill impression was spot-on!

Wow that cave was awesome, a great random adventure
Those caves are so beautiful!
That last part, I thought you'd quote Fillmore from Cars:
"I'm tellin' ya man, every third blink is slower."
So did I!
I love natural wonders! So glad you chose to go see a cave🙂

You're a trooper! You must be getting tired yet you keep delivering. Almost done buddy. Great Stuff!

Many years ago we went through the cavern at Silver Dollar City in Branson. And I have plant called Mother-in-law's tounge.
"I'm underground yet my fear of heights is kicking in." LOL
Wow, did you look at the schize of that cave?! That cave was amazing. It bet it felt so good in there. Free air condition! You should have sang the Banana Boat Song in there for the echo. :)
