Thanks Bailey! They are making super light weight boots now that made sooo much of a difference w/ the heavy pack. I don't necessarily need the higher part around my ankle but that chassis/shaft to help w/ the weight distribution.
I too ditched my trail runners and went back to my wonderful Keen hiking boots. I hated feeling every rock and root on the trail; my feet were hot and sore after just short mileage hikes. For thru hikers they maybe a "must" as they are doing beaucoup miles every day. But for my trips, my Keens work best. Great video. Thanks
The Minimo is great! I actually do a lot of my food videos using that stove because it is wider and easier to cook things in. It also has super good simmer control.
That water bladder drinking fountain for the dog is brilliant and the pump is awesome having to stop to water my pup all the time got a bit tedious out on the pct it would have been nice to not have to pour up a bowl and hope he doesn't knock it over before I can pour the left overs back into his water bottle
Love this video! Everyone has different gear that works for them! We all like to give our suggestions or what works for us, but the complete opposite may work better for someone else! Your bladder setup is pretty slick! Also, Injinji toe socks for the win!!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻 Gear people tell me to ditch: I always take two pillows! I just find it so much more comfortable! An inflatable and a camp pillow. Definitely not ultralight, but worth it for the sleep!
It is so tiring to always hear the "Cool Kids" blathering on about how trail runners are superior to real backpacking boots. I have been backpacking since 1986---I am 69---mostly soloing in Central and South America where I lived for 14 years. Jungles, Andes, grasslands, deep canyons---all done with high-top leather backpacking boots. Never had blisters or any other problems with my feet. I also used external frame Kelty packs, which would drive those "Cool Kids" insane. Tried the Jetboil but hated it. I will stick with my invincible MSR XGK-II. Tried a water bladder but the tube constantly got stuck in jungle foliage. Good video!
Thank you! The only problem I ever had with my shoes is when I switched to a hybrid trail runner/mid-boot for backpacking to "try it out". I had blisters and so much pain in my plantar fascia where every time I stepped on a rock, I felt like someone ripped out my arch! I'll sacrifice the weight of a good boot to help me carry the load better.
Great explanations for those items, and I love the idea of the pump filter for the water bladder. However, my main concern for the water bladder is determining how much is left. I've used them before and ran out of water at the most inopportune times. I'd appreciate your thoughts on that.
It’s always a worry for me. I started tracking my water usage per mile or hour on shorter hikes so I could gauge how much I would use on average and that would definitely help. With Remy, it’s about 1L/hr or 1L per 2.3 mi. Hotter days I use more of course but that measurement helped me feel more comfortable.
What a lot of hiking/backpacking snobs fail to realize is, there's a lot of variety between thu hikers, bushcrafters, glampers, boondockers, etc and everything in between. There's overlap and things can be mixed and matched and justified and rationalized. My thing with bladders is they can be pretty out of the way AND act as a safety net--"spare" water if you will.
Agree. I usually like to keep about 1L of water as my safety stock when hiking with Remy. Particularly out west where the water sources can dry up very quickly. I don't mess with water carry.
Another great and informative video! The jury is still out on my jetboil vs pocket rocket. This is the first year of using the rocket and the big thing I noticed right off the bat is it’s higher fuel consumption. Not a fan of that.
THIS IS AWESOME. And i also feel personally attacked. haha jk jk. Seriously though that's why I said everyone is different about their gear when it comes to backpacking, and that's what makes it always a fun discussion. Great video! I personally thought of you when it came to the Jetboil on my latest video.
Can't wait for you to move over to the cool kids club. They almost kicked me out for keeping my Nalgene bottle (mostly for hot water bottles on cold nights), but they let me in when I switched to trail runners and trekking poles.
Your water bladder, did you have clean it out with anything when you first got it? Mine didn't come with instructions on recommended cleaning instructions for first use
I usually do a vinegar wash to get the plastic taste out. Recently I’ve been using steramine for all my water storage and let it sit over night before rinsing out.
Excellent video! The constant focus on ultralight and weight cutting (at the expense of comfort and even functionality) has gotten really tedious. Your video was just a breath of pure mountain air. I’ll look forward to more of your observations and insights as one of the practical uncool kids,
@@GIRLplusDOGAdventures I was trying to be polite but: they do not have a wide toe shoes. :) Meaning my fingers will not fit their shoes comfortably. This is why I bought Topo, because they shoes are the shape of the human feet, where Salomon's are narrow in the toes area. Salomon has this traditional shape of the shoe that does not allow the toes to spread. Great channel BTW :)
Awesome video as always. I recently ditched my framed backpack but it's because I can't find one that fots me right. Im a big guy and most big brand hip belts don't work for me. I have a pack being custom built as we speak and I can't wait to test it out. As for gear I use that I hear people say ditch is the Grayl Geopress. I just prefer to have the purifier over a water filter and that being said I typically take a Katadyn BeFree as well with a Hydropak 3L bladder as a backup and a quick way to refill all my bottles if needed.I struggle drinking from hydration tubes or I would definitely go that route. I also love my Jetboil MiniMo but been considering getting one that I can nest the fuel canister inside of it along with the stove.
I’m definitely a BeFree person too (I also bring this along) for filtration with the Hydrapak Seekers. I like how they can roll up and I‘ve used them in the winter for the warm water bottle at night.
yes so glad i found your channel! i love watching gear vids but most of the ones i see are from men. their perspective is fine but i want someone who can give a woman’s pov that’ll be helpful for me. keep up the great work!!
Have you ever tried Paramo gear you will be amazed I've been out in terentual rain, snow, and thunder storms and when the weather has ceased it only takes about 10 minuets to dry all the best Rob Lowe
Just found your channel. Definitely the Nalgene bottles. You can't use them because they are so "heavy". I actually weighed a Nalgene filled with water vs a 1 liter Smartwater bottle. The Nalgene was a whopping 2 ounces heavier.
Love it! Nalgenes are also great for the hot water bottle in the winter, wider mouth to easily pour in powder mixes, and you can also use it as a foot or muscle roller. So many uses.
Love my water bladder, Salomons (since the 90s), Injinji toe socks, taking deodorant cream or in a chapstick tube, and my Jetboil zip. Resisted Jetboil for a while but the benefits outweigh the weight. 😬. Love my dog too. Ahhh, so nice when great minds think alike. Lol.
My philosophy is, I'd rather carry more weight for more comfort AND training--just to get stronger or training for hunting--some people care more about miles per day, my main focus is contentment, and maintaining strength...it's hard to explain...I'm odd and slow and have certain goals and needs
Agree on this one as well. I knew I had to carry more weight when I hiked the Colorado Trail with Remy. So instead of focusing purely on cutting weight and safety-items, I also focused on training.
I admit I ditched my jetboil recently. I feel like it was too narrow, so I replaced it with a wider opening Toaks and BRS stove. Makes it easier to cook things in rather than just boil water. Plus I did definitely cut some ounces haha. I will say that on shorter trips, I do occasionally carry deodorant. Don't tell anyone though! ;)
3L. I think I ordered it directly from the Gregory website. The hose is pretty good for not freezing as soon but then the mouth piece can still freeze up so you just need to put it in your mouth first in the winter to warm it up. It actually works well in the summer too to not heat up the water.
@@GIRLplusDOGAdventures thanks for the reply! I'm really enjoying your videos. You're very thorough with the information you're providing and I appreciate it! I just ordered the Nemo Dragonfly bikepacking tent because of your review! I had just ordered the Nemo Hornet 2P but I think I'm going to send it back as all the extras with the Dragonfly seems worth it to me for just a little extra weight.
Those darn youtubers…oh wait. I agree that everyone should use the gear that works for them and not worry about what others say they should use. There is no right or wrong way to do it if it doesn’t injure you or put you in danger. Great job and by the way, your set is better then snackbox.
Me and my bestfriend did a 3 day hike and when his wife came to pick us up 😂🤣🤣😂 she didn't say hi or how was it, it was omg you all stink so bad I'm getting sick 😂🤣😅🤣😂😂
I’m convinced that most people who gear shame are arm chair hikers.
Not counting the super fast (100 day CDT hikers/

This is perfect. Wonder how it worked out for you.
I had look at Salomon last month and ended up buying Topo as I could not easily find wide toes version on Salomon website.
Yeah, one of the annoying things with the Salomon brand is they do have so many options but you basically have to try them all to find the right ones.
