11:50 I have a few of those cheap Amazon sun hoodies. They work, but they are heavy material. I found some clearance OR brand Echo sun hoodies on Amazon. Regular price for them is crazy, but clearance price was reasonable. Well worth the money. The OR SPF isn't as high as the Bealeaf (or however it's spelled) type hoodies from Amazon, but it's a difference of 98% for the cheap shirts to 90% of rays blocked for the OR hoodies and the OR are so much lighter weight and breathable, there is no comparison.
Totally something worth spending a bit more for quality products. I think if I hadn't tried the OV Altitude I would have probably just gone back to t shirts and sunscreen based on the Baleaf's weight and lack of breathability.
@@SparkyOne549 Thank you for sharing. I certainly saw the value in it when I was on my group trip. I think it's great that you have that option! If it helps people get on the trail that might not be able to otherwise, it's a winner 🙂
Hi, great video. Well done. Brooks Caldera 6/7 trail trainer with a good waterproof sock (Daky). You may get a bargain as the Caldera 6 is being phased out
A good, sensible video. It's too easy to go over the top spending money. I'm from the 'wet' UK, 79 and still hiking, and often hike in France so I wear a full-brimmed hat (from Sunday Afternoon) mainly to protect my ears. I used to wear boots, but now wear trail shoes (not waterproof) and marry them with a pair of waterproof socks. There's always a danger of skin cancer, I know, because it happened to me, but now cured. Nowadays I always wear long-sleeved items, and I too use a sun hoody, I will not go on a hike without one. I walked from Geneva Airport to Lyon Airport in August, it was so hot, and the sun hoody was worth its weight in gold.
I’ve been using the Topo Pursuits and they’ve worked well for me. They accommodate my wide foot, and the tread lasts about twice as long as Altras for me. I did have to get creative with lacing to optimize the comfort of them though, but once I got them dialed in, they work great.
Team 2 Pillows checking in! Stack that OV pillow under your forever pillow. I bought a couple of those OV from a RUclips ad(just pay shipping on first, dirt cheap 2nd), I stack it under my Trekology aluft 2.0. Game changing!
I have a problem with pillows, as an older person I suffer from acid reflux and I need a pillow with height, to keep the acid in my stomach. I have an electric bed at home, but when hiking I use two blow-up pillows, each one 3" high, stacked on top of each other, both covered and held together by a buff. I use star-type tent aluminium pegs that can hurt the palms of my hands, so I use a small plastic plumber's tubular pipe 'T' piece to push them in, easy peasy. I don't carry deodorant with me when hiking, I use the simple alcohol gel that we all used in the Covid era, (it's claimed that it destroys the bacteria that makes our sweat smell) I think that's correct because it works a treat for me, under my arms, groin area and on feet, sometimes on the back of my neck.
@@RegEdmunds Great solution to the tent stake problem! I love the idea of using a buff for multiple pillows... Sounds like the pillow stacking is a pretty common idea. Love that I can continue to learn from others.
I Adore my Moabs (have 2 pair). Foray into trailrunners led me to the Topo Pursuit 2s. I think the Topos are the match for the Merrell's, if that makes sense. Just different use cases. The Topos are like walking on clouds. The Merrell Moabs are sturdy and solid. Both fit my feet nicely and zero break-in required on either.
I have a pair of Moabs, but only use them nowadays on day hikes (they are so comfortable) when I hike I use trail shoes. I find them so much better over long distances.
I tried the Merrell Novas too and I just couldn’t make them work either. I love the Moab too and really hoped and wanted them to work. They were uncomfortable and didn’t last long at all. Back to Altras now. So it’s not just you on the Novas.

Highly recommend Outdoor Vitals Altitude sun hoodie. It is the lightest, most breathable sun hoodie I own.

I hike with the helinox chair, I need it because I have osteoporosis of my spine and need to stop to rest my back regularly, I love it!
