2010's METAL GEAR SOLID: PEACE WALKER moved Hideo Kojima's tactical espionage operations series onto a new platform - the PSP - and a new era - the 1970s. In this, part two of the newest trilogy of videos in the acclaimed 'What Even Happens in MGS' series, we take a deep dive into the game's events. Fittingly, as Peace Walker takes place a decade since the events of Operation Snake Eater, this series is debuting a decade after Peace Walker's debut! Join me and reunite with some old friends, from Huey, to Kaz, to the mercurial Dr. Strangelove, as we travel with Snake as he tries to save the world from nuclear annihilation.

"Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker was announced as a PSP exclusive Metal Gear title during Sony's E3 Conference on June 2, 2009. The game was released in the US on June 8, 2010. It was later remastered and ported to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 as part of the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, which was released in the US on November 8, 2011.
The game is set in 1974, four years after the events of Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, and two years after the Les Enfants Terribles project. It is based in Costa Rica and looks to show the creation of Outer Heaven. The game focuses on Big Boss and elaborates on certain elements of the Metal Gear mythology. It is being called "The missing link in the Metal Gear Saga" by Kojima Productions. Hideo Kojima said he chose to focus his attention on Peace Walker rather than its console-bound brother, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, which was simultaneously in development.
Kojima has reiterated several times that Peace Walker is, from his perspective, "Metal Gear Solid 5", and, were it on the home consoles, it would have been given a numbered title. "Since it is on PSP," Kojima said in an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine, "I did not officially number it. But the game design, story, number of staff and budget-you can say that this is a big project. It would've been number 5. It’s not a side story or a spin-off. It’s not like Portable Ops or Acid. I am deeply involved and this is the next Metal Gear."

I never noticed before, yet gw-pupa, TJ-chrysalis, and TR-cocoon all had the initials of the Patriot's A.I. It does explain why after you defeat each boss, each A.I. pod flies away as though they know they still have more games to appear in.
If you don’t escape your cell fast enough and get sent back to the interrogation room enough times, Snake starts begging Strangelove to kill him rather than make him confront what happened in Snake Eater

The whole of Peace Walker really looks like a recollection of someone else about Big Boss' myth. Maybe a recollection of V. The tech is crazy anachronistic. In MGSV, everytime you see either the idroid or Sahelantropus (that looks a lot like REX and Zeke) theres this weird code effect on screen.

This week, I've been reading Legacy of Ashes: The History of the CIA. As a kid I used to think the story of MGS was sloppy and that the secret societies were almost silly in terms of their plans and how 'make it up as you go' it seemed with how easily derailed they'd get or how inaccurate intelligences ended up being. Ultimately this book on the real history of the CIA showed similar Liquid Snake levels of short-sightedness and even movie-like implausibility-silliness in terms of failures or successes on the behalf of the CIA as a unit or in their individual operatives as well as predecessors

Everyone thinks these intelligence agencies like the CIA are all knowing and can control events and foresee events decades in advance. In reality they are a bumbling bureaucracy like all government agencies and have many incompetent people. They are so far from infallible it’s incredible.
The cia has had many comical shortcomings, the multiple assasination attempts on fidel castro is what first comes to mind for me.

Man as a kid I just loved these games cuz of the stealth gameplay and the epic cutscenes. Not understanding just how complex and insane the story and themes are. Playing MG5 as an adult and then watching so many of your metal gear videos has been such a pleasure

Ty so much for the breakdown of such a wonderful story. I personally have been struggling to complete Peacewalker for many years having originally preordered the special edition on PSP. The farthest I got in the game is beating Pupa many years later on a Vita version of the game. I'm truly happy to finally get to experience it and hopefully one day finish it im game form

Interesting note about Snake's fake Boss scar: In MGSV, Venom Snake actually doesn't have that fake tribute scar despite having multiple other real scars from the helicopter crash. Given that only Kaz would have known about that scar's significance and didn't know about the plan for Venom Snake until after it had begun, it's a very obvious telltale sign that the Medic was a double which almost nobody seems to have realized since Peace Walker was so underappreciated.
21:28 Actually this part your mentioning dose make more sense about Jack. Playing the psp 2010 peace walker I thought that snake eater event and the flashback were in a sense the same thing repeating as going along with it. I must of doublethink that one. Lol
I might be stretching here on this with Snake or Jack character, in mgs3 there is a part where Jack enters a nightmare during the torture event, with police like monsters and New York city view graffiti, the person with swords strapped around him and fights them that kinda resembles Jack, Riaden from mgs2. It was Kojimas test game he was working on but he scrapped it and doesn't exist on the mgs HD collection.
Though I got an interpration that Jack was brought up in the rough streets of Manhattan New York, perhaps a distortion from covering his pain and his past upbringing that he may of faced trouble with the police or was in a limbo state of insomnia that didnt know where to turn and eventually joined the army. What you say here is anther distortion to comfort himself from yet anther pain that he cant come to terms with. Jack's sentiments, and idealised of the boss was like a mother to him.

I got to ask with mgv we know that a person can be turned into a phantom with hypnosis then why did they not do it for the boss it's seems kinda weird
For Venom they had the original around to work from, & for "Liquid Ocelot" the "patient" was also the one implanting the suggestion, which no doubt made things easier.
Trying to implant the identity of someone dead tho, even with a bunch of data...not the same sort of thing I wouldn't think.

You would really think a lot about how Kojima manages to integrate historic events and make it accurate as possible and relate it to in-game events, evidenced in MGS3, Peace Walker, and 5. His mind is too good.
I can imagine a WW2 game that is so historically accurate yet introspective in nature made by this guy.

Can someone please answer me this. How was Strangelove able to complete the bosses ai if Big Boss never told her the truth of what happened to the boss? And why is Big Boss having trouble recollecting what happened to the boss? Is it like ptsd thats making his mind misremember what order things happened? Cause he definitely knows the truth of what happened to the boss from the tape Eva gave him at the end of mgs3. That she was loyal to her country all along as she defected to get the legacy, and im a little confused here, but she was also loyal to herself as she chose to accept the mission and to be killed by snake. Any answers would be awesome as these are like the only things in mgs i still have questions on, and cant find a definitive answer.
