20 years ago, one game changed everything: METAL GEAR SOLID 2. Join Jorin Lee of Futurasound Productions, creators of the acclaimed miniseries WTF Happens in MGSV, on another unparalleled MGS analysis project. This time? We'll be unpacking the 'substance', that is the storyline, of MGS2.
This video follows the overview of the game's prologue, 'Tanker', with the first of three scenarios from the Manhattan Incident: Bomb Disposal...dismantling one's sins.
    0:00 - Introduction
0:40 - Scenario One: The Bomb Scare
    6:14 - Introducing the S3 Plan
    14:38 - S1 in Detail
    53:10 - End Credits
    ****************
"The long awaited sequel to the PlayStation game Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty was released on November 13th, 2001. MGS2 does not star the former FOXHOUND agent Solid Snake. Instead, Hideo Kojima took players into the mind of super soldier Raiden, a stealth operative on his first live combat scenario. His objective is to stop a group of terrorists, calling themselves the Sons of Liberty. This includes blowing up a large oil cleanup facility and killing the President of the United States.
MGS2's innovations included its introduction of the laser sight mechanic for more accurate aiming, and a refined cover system that allowed both players and enemies to shoot from cover. It also introduced collective enemy AI routines that relied on squad tactics rather than working individually, while individual enemies expressed fear and even birds had their own AI routines. MGS2 was considered to have the best enemy AI in gaming for many years. The physics was also a major step forward for gaming, particularly the sophisticated particle effects for its time (including for individual drops of rain) and the way objects moved.
The game earned both critical and commercial acclaim upon release, with the highest sales and review scores in the series. However, the game's convoluted story, excessive use of Codec conversations and new protagonist Raiden was criticized by a number of fans, temporarily relegating him to a joke character (even with Kojima himself) until his popular transformation in Metal Gear Solid 4.
Despite the controversy surrounding the unexpected bait-and-switch and convoluted storyline at the time, Sons of Liberty is today seen as a landmark title in the history of video games. It is considered the first truly postmodern video game, is frequently cited as a primary example of artistic expression in video games, and is generally considered one of the most influential games of the past decade, both for its artistic influence on later video game storylines (most notably Eternal Darkness, Killer7, Portal, and especially BioShock, which even featured a very similar plot twist) as well as its influence on the gameplay mechanics of many action games since."

I've argued with many friends that MGS2 is the most important game ever made.
It was a warning about a dark future, where disinformation runs rampant, where certain entities, parties, or a dangerous autocrat would seek exploit it. A phantom from 2001 come to haunt us in the 2020s. Enter Solidus Snake.

When you realize the Big Shell itself is like a symbol for Raiden's heart, after he's captured and Arsenal is activated, the Big Shell (both the place and the "Big Shell" around his heart) are destroyed. Heck he's literally stripped both naked and in the persona he had prior where he believed he was a rookie soldier who never killed before. This is where he starts to breakdown and remember who he is.
Snake could be interpreted as Raiden's Super Ego, the part that keeps him good and sane, reassuring him whenever he feels doubt (Looking at him while Solidus strangles you literally slows the depletion of the o2 gauge.) GW could stand for the Id, trying to influence him in unhealthy ways by divulging the origin of his birthname being linked to war, encouraging him to fight and kill Solidus (Literally refers to the two as their monsters.) Making Raiden question everything he knows, the mind break codec calls in Arsenal, and trying to convince him that his free will is a mistake. Most importantly, GW is directly against everything Snake stands for despite insisting not to trust him because he isn't part of the simulation even though he perfectly fits in as the "Meryl" of the S3. The symbolism in this game is something else!

It's funny how the playable main characters are all related in a way. Jack Sears is named because he's the adopted son of George Sears aka solidus snake. Like solid snakes dad is big boss so is raidens in a way since solidus snake is the 'perfect' clone of big boss. Now raidens not genetically solidus's son, but it's still funny how all the main playable characters are in some way related to big boss. And like how solid snake had to kill his 'father' so too will raiden by the end of sons of liberty. Oh how I love mgs for its overly complicated story.
