    Ever since the 2015 release of Hideo Kojima's METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN, fans have endlessly speculated over its many secrets, misdirects, and possible interpretations. Yet its harshest critics, on the other hand, have alleged the game was left unfinished, and ultimately unfulfilling.
    A common complaint has been that TPP lacked cutscenes with the typical MGS substance, and that it's story feels elliptical. Even die-hard fans have convinced themselves of a coming secret 'Chapter Three', where every dot will be connected, and every stray plot-line conclusively tied up.
    But is it possible that underneath it all, MGSV is not only a completely finished game, but one with more detailed, rich, and nuanced cut-scenes than any entry before it?
    In this new series from Futurasound Productions, creator of the hit trilogy 'WTF Happens in MGSV', we return again to the polarizing and mysteriously hypnotic swan song that is MGSV:TPP - this time to take a deeper dive than ever, specifically into the cutscenes.
    In this episode, we continue to explore the first encounter with Skull Face, and the second against the Skulls, in MISSION 06: WHERE DO THE BEES SLEEP?
    Intro - 0:00
    Part One - 1:34
    Part Two - 24:54
    Credits - 54:23
    I finished this video a while back, so the list of backers may not be fully up to date. If I missed anyone, I'll pin a comment with the full list shortly, Boss!

    One of my favorite parts of MGS is how "Snake" and "Big Boss" become cultural icons within the world of MGS, but also in real life and it's written as a response to that very idea. But that cultural significance is dwindled by the fact that they're just cogs in the larger machine, being manipulated and deceived to fill the role that's been forced upon them. It's easy to dismiss The Phantom Pain as not really fitting into the rest of the franchise, some even call it a mistake, but I couldn't disagree more. In many ways TPP is a preemptive response to the criticism it was bound to recieve and it's quite amazing in that regard. Obviously people are entitled to their opinions, but the way this game justifies itself is so captivating to me. It's just not immediately clear, even upon "completion" how big the bigger picture really is. The other MGS games are relatively short and concise stories of just a few events over a short period of time. TPP is effectively a story without end which is, in addition to exploring a wide range of topics that the franchise is known for, a self referential commentary on the effect Metal Gear Solid had on the real world.

    • @LAGator-qu7tc
      @LAGator-qu7tc 2 года назад +11

      Yup also with the freedom the game gives it really allows us to tell our own stories of how we want to see our icon, Big Boss…. Hero or Villain ?
      With the amount of work Venom puts in overseas….. the choice is up to us. We’re neither heroes or villains just an army completely missions assigned to us in any fashion we want. Nd it doesn’t end because in game theory would be time paradox where venom’s free reign ends here. Whatever stories we created with Venom built Big Boss reputation.

    • @Slowdough99
      @Slowdough99 2 года назад +11

      @@LAGator-qu7tc well this has always been the point of Hideos art since MGS2 regarding the Metal Gear Solid Series. MGS4 and MGS5 are literally half satirical jabs and the part of this fanbase that are literally in a cult and refuse to let the IP die. Old Snake in 4 is, in writing terms (I am a writer just for clarification), is a direct attack on those who demand more Metal Gear and more snake and won't just let him die. This is why 4 is so genuis imo. It's all meme culture. It's a sequel, but all of it is dead inside. The main boss looks like Liquid, acts like Liquid, but in reality is only a meme of liquid snake. It is all a direct commentary on rabid Fandom and corporations milking properties until they are withered up and lifeless. Hence the ending chat with Big Boss. We must bring everything back to 0. As long as 0 exist, soon it will be 100. That is a direct statement on milking the Metal Gear franchise and fans demanding he keep making them. Which is why Death Stranding is my favorite game of the last 5 years and my 2nd favorite Kojima game behind Snake Eater. I dont want to sound like some type of elitist because I hate that, but Death Stranding was so misunderstood at launch it is not even funny. The depth of that game if you just commit to playing it, well frankly, it is mindblowing. Not only the deep themes and philosophies, but the actual gameplay. Yeah it is a FedEx simulator, if that's how you choose to view it and be reductive. No other game in history has actually created a world. A real world, where every step takes planning and thought. You can't just push the stick forward like every other open world game and get where you are going. You need to plan, build, watch where you walk, figure out routes, help other players, let them help you. So happy the PC community really understood this game when it launched on the PC. A big portion of westerner console players like myself, just could not grasp the idea and tossed it away because it wasn't endless action and dopamine. There is nothing in gaming like traveling will 100s of pounds of precious cargo, figuring out a beautiful route to take, building a road and some bridges, and just as you step over the horizon.........Low Roar starts singing through the headphones, and all of a sudden I don't feel so alone. What a game. I LOVEEE MGS. Every single one is a masterclass in their own right, but I am so happy he is making new stuff. He is old now, almost 60, and he may only have 1 or 2 games left in him. Lets let him create the world's and games he desires. I think he has earned that people. Stop with the cult shit thinking everything is a Kojima ARG bringing Silent Hill and MGS back. He has moved on, we should too.

      You'd think people had already picked up that Snake nor Big Boss have never done anything purely on their own. Even in OG Metal Gear Big Boss is your handler but also the main villain, so the only reason an unarmed agent got as far as he did, was because the enemy boss was letting them get that far. Snake got into Shadow Moses not only because Ocelot was a mole, but also the president himself was behind the operation. In MGS2 Snake was lured onto the tanker to frame him, the same powers that manipulate him into being a legend also manipulating him to be a villain. Raiden's infiltration of Big Shell was all part of a simulation and some of the bosses were in on it. Doesn't mean Snake, Raiden, BB, etc. aren't highly trained soldiers, they are, they're just not doing it all on their own.
      But imagine you're a basic soldier told Big Boss is the baddest mofo around. And you're sent to eliminate him while he's in a coma in a hospital. And when you arrive, the assassin sent in ahead comes flying out the window of Boss' room. On fire. You don't know it was two cripples getting lucky, you just know a dude in a coma beat and set light to an assassin sent to kill him. And you're most certainly not gonna keep that story to yourself, you're gonna tell it and spread the legend of Big Boss.

    In the scene where V is hanging from Sahelanthropus (45:35), could it be seen that rather than being a mirror of skull face, he's an inversion. Skull face could be seen as being a mirror of Jack as he would go into the mission after him to clear them up, but V isn't Jack and therefore skull face isn't a mirror.
    Or maybe seen as a 'double' mirror? Where Skull face is a mirror of Jack, and V is also a mirror of Jack but in a different direction?
    Dunno, just thought the framing of having V hanging face to face of Skull face was an odd choice, especially when you consider if he was grabbed he'd still be upright so he had to be rotated.

    • @Rhomagus

    “Big Boss” as a code name and “Boss”in general was always a curse. Solid Snake realized he was nothing more than human. Naked Snake, of all people, knew of his own limits. Venom Snakes realization is for the player to finally admit we’re in the same system-thrust into a fate we cannot control. Grasping only to those phantoms. “He’s experienced all your missions on record[…]” is a direct reference to the player but also Venom as a character in MGS. The legends were always a doublethink but the player was included in the victim list of counterintelligence... That’s how propaganda works.
    Furthermore, having direct support (XOF During operation snake-eater) in combat doesn’t nullify combat operations or make a soldier less successful. Acknowledging you’re not superhuman is crucial to understanding how to fight the enemy.
    Lastly, this monologue 13:47 either proves skull face is unaware you’re venom not naked or is willing to lie to you. But what would be the motivation to lie about you being naked snake. I truly believe he’s unaware.

Sure he had some field experience as a child soldier, but most of his training was all VR and there was nothing special about his genetics. I always enjoyed the ambiguity in this cutscene in regards to Skull Face knowing if we're the real Big Boss or not. It's not touched on here but what always got me was the line delivery of the final "Boss" by Skull Face as he ends the conversation (In the English version at least). It's spitting - sarcastic. It comes across as almost mockingly calling us Boss. Is it because he knows we aren't really Big Boss or is he merely belittling us?
    You mention at the end of the video the Soviets shooting the Hamid fighter in the back after he leads them to the Honey Bee. I just want to point out for those who might not know but the animations used here were also used in one of the trailers for MGSV - the one where the soldiers shoot a POW in the back in Camp Omega. It was one of those "missing scenes" people cried about a lot shortly after the game came out so this has been pointed out a ton, but it might be a cool thing for those who aren't aware.

    @16:36 A different example I might use for Naked Snake is that of a scalpel. He is the very tip of a very fine blade. One intended to do no more than needed, the rest of FOX in this case would be the rest of the shaft of the tool and XOF a combination of the ink on the skin and the sutures after. If everything goes well neither the prep work, operation, nor clean up are noticed by anyone who didn't need to. There are more similarities here as well, but it's important to note like the classic "tip of the spear" sayings no one, not Boss, Big Boss, FOX, XOF, operates without some support and supply structure and unless something goes wrong the support jobs remains quiet, unnoticed, and sometimes unknown.

    I always found the zoom with accompanying sound effects of the camera at all points of MGSV to be Kojima's attempt to make the camera capture of all of what big boss is doing to be canon. This would mean Skull Face and XOF being FOX's tail, in addition to what you mentioned, are the source of the camera feeds that documented Snake Eater. This plays with your moral on the disempowerment caused by XOF in our role "controlling" big boss - in some exceptionally meta way Kojima has canonised the very act of playing a game as it has existed in the mainstream - a parasitic, vicariously glorious experience.

    • @MusicForTheBroken

      Who exactly is she and why didn’t you explicitly state her name? If you’re referring to PAZ, that still doesn’t explain why the skulls can materialize archea out of seemingly nothing. Even if the bone fragment of Paz stuck in the medics head IS actually archea, this doesn’t explain the skulls having the ability to manipulate those affected by archea and to “create” up from the earth in such large quantities.

    You keep mentioning Snow-9 without discussing what it's named for, Ice-9 from Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle. To quote Wikipedia: "Ice-9 is an alternative structure of water that is solid at room temperature and acts as a seed crystal upon contact with ordinary liquid water, causing that liquid water to instantly transform into more Ice-9." I think the meaning here to Skull Face's plans is obvious. There's a lot more in the book I think could be important, but the Snow-9/Ice-9 connection is the obvious line to follow. The first line of the book is also a Moby Dick reference.

    I'd say the Dune saga has some influence on MGS too, not just the old movie. The gholas come to mind, and the whole MGSV ruse to 'awaken' the Big Boss persona in V remind me of the transformation from ghola Duncan (named Hayt, coincidentially), who is a mere tool, to the actual Duncan with all his memories and experiences. And, overall, the themes of power and subtle manipulation on a big scale.

    45:06 That makes no sense. If Skullface knew the truth, he wouldn't sit down and talk to Venom in that long one sided conversation as if he was talking to the real Big Boss.
    And the Prisoner didn't have his vocal chords removed. He will make some noise after you drop him to his death from high up.

    Your content has really cemented for me my big problem with Kojima's storytelling, especially in mgs 5. He tells structurally simple stories, with incredibly bare-bones messages, but he does it in the most complex roundabout and scattered way possible which gives them the illusion of depth. Just like that hack orwell.
