    35:05 actually, what I always thought was that the boss gives snake the legacy when she dies, however, during ocelot and snake's wrestling on the wig, he swaps it with a fake of his and pockets snake's real legacy to give to the CIA.
    I think this makes more sense because it makes ocelot's final appearance a little more meaningful than just a little show and also provides insurance in case snake like destroys the fake in frustration or something (which in your theory would've been the real one) it seems like a variable that the CIA would just eliminate entirely if possible.

    When the Boss states "It's raining blood...is he crying?" I believe this is indeed the Sorrow crying for not only Joy but the Cobra Unit as well. This event is not only an emotional and bittersweet reunion for their unit, but just like when he last met Joy in that region there will be death. Death for his love and for his brothers in arms, his entire unit, because at that point there is no turning back for any of them.
    Bittersweet is certainly how I felt especially when I first played this game because when we first observe the Boss and her Cobra unit, Kojima did a good job making the Cobras feel like a family that transcends any government or organizational allegiances, whom are loyal to each other first and foremost. This family that Snake "the new blood" that "has been rejected" as per The Pain, will be forced to destroy and for reasons that aren't entirely clear for first time players. When we they do become clear, the tragedy of our acts only empower and highlight the importance of the Boss' vision and hopes.
    (I also want to thank you Mr. Lee, for celebrating and shedding light and comprehension on my favorite series. A series integral to my particular upbringing. You're improving my childhood and your content is the like a true S3 plan for our sanity during these crazy times. lol
    I feel smarter and following you has also improved how I analyze and understand concepts in writing and themes and I hope to use this to one day craft quality stories of my own. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart Boss.)

      I think Big Boss was similarly affected by the Cobra Unit as a family unit of sorts. I don't think it's too outlandish to think he based his ideological approach to Outer Heaven & FOXHOUND on the Cobra Unit, as a group united by their common vocation as soldiers rather than loyalty to a nation or specific mission.

    It's generally been accepted and known that one of the reasons for fighting the Cobra Unit was more to teach Naked Snake to overcome all their respective emotions, make him be above them. Although I don't really know what The End is necessarily supposed to represent...
    But taking the thought to it's conclusion, that part of the operation is an attempt to make him when he becomes Big Boss into a soldier who knows no Pain, Fear, Fury, Sorrow or Joy. Just a machine following orders, with extraordinary skill. A perfect soldier.

  • @PhantomFrogBatman
    @PhantomFrogBatman 4 года назад +15

    This is a GREAT video series, but I find it flawed.
    I think one of the big things Futurasound gets wrong is that Ocelot's allegiances in Snake Eater shift as the story goes on, his loyalty to the USA isn't static from the beginning. He's playing all sides off each other for his benefit, narrowing down his allegiance as the events progress. For a time Ocelot really wants to kill Snake, but he is ultimately awed and has nothing but respect for Snake in the end. They both triumph throughout the story in their own separate, but connected ways. They are both the real victors, even if the victory for Snake is bittersweet and not what he expected or wanted.
    Futurasound is also wrong in the analysis that the Cobras are just strawmen who forfeit their lives in sham battles. The Boss has faith in Snake's abilities and betrayed her Cobras similar to the way Olga betrays her men in MGS2. Olga betrays her comrades for the benefit of her child. The Boss wagers the life of the Cobras for the success of her mission because she believes Snake will be able to take them down. I'm sure she uses the transmitter to monitor Snake and position the Cobras against him on the battlefield, but they are there to kill him as far as they are concerned. The Boss is always loyal "to the end", even if that means she knows her men will be killed to achieve her goals.

    I do like how Snake turned into a different Big Boss than they were ever expecting. I personally feel it's subtext to show that even with all the calculus, shadow political machinations, and decades long international calculus they were all thwarted by the personal feelings of a human. It's quite funny to me how the Patriots/American Philosophers set up this scheme of the hero becoming the villain only to be supplanted by the next hero and it essentially failed on the first go around because they never even considered how a real human would react to these revelations.

  • @Bentbire

    You know, I get Bog Boss is a villain but I really can’t blame him. He’s constantly being used and lied to by the people he once thought he could trust most, it makes perfect sense that he would go off and come to horrible conclusions and reject the role that those same people elect is best suited to him. I’m not saying I think he made the right decisions, but I do think it’s worth mentioning that it’s incredibly understandable why he makes the decisions that he does. He wants to resist Cipher, and thus the world, for using him at their own convenience and toying with his heart and mind, not caring at all what he’s given up for them. Makes me wonder why Zero ever thought Big Boss would agree to his demands at all in Peacewalker given all that went down.

  • @lazzatv
    @lazzatv 4 года назад +1

    Excellent video and perfect analysis. Thank you very much.
    I'd like to mention a couple of extra fan theories:
    -Ocelot's Russian roulette trials where he shoots, can be explained with the fact that he doesn't care too much on saving EVA (a Chinese spy that could potentially get her hands on the Legacy in the end) or Sokolov (a scientist that could and will leak precious information on the Shagohod to EVA and he is an asset in the hands of Volgin). EVA's survival is instead protected by The Boss, who practically is on the same side of Ocelot but wants to send a final message to Snake and keeps EVA alive mainly for that reason even keeping Ocelot into place with her slaps. Also there's the scene when Ocelot tries to stop EVA and Snake escaping on the motorbike, but afterwards he leaves them escape with the WIG, so probably it's between these two scenes that Ocelot finds out from The Boss that she kept EVA alive but gave her a fake microfilm and that the real one is still with her.
    -Volgin could have been the one that handles to The Boss the Legacy fake microfilm, otherwise that would be a very uncautious move. Also at that point the microfilm is on himself and not in the vault anymore, even if the spy (EVA) is captured. He could've revealed the location earlier in the ground vault during Snake's torture just to get the spy exposed.
    Ocelot says that the smell of gasoline exposed EVA as a spy, meaning he was the one finding her so he could have access to the real legacy which he could have given to The Boss who then gives it to Snake before passing away.
    That would explain how Ocelot gets in possession of half the legacy (presumably meant for the KGB, but in truth in the hands of Ocelot who'll establish the Patriots with Zero once gained the other half) before the real microfilm is delivered to the CIA passing from Ocelot, to The Boss and to Snake.
    Only during the fight with Snake Volgin realizes that even his most trusted man Ocelot isn't on his side and doesn't follow his orders and that the real microfilm may not be anymore in his possession.
    On the other hand, it's more probable that Volgin at that point trusted The Boss enough to give her the real Legacy and that the fake microfilm was never in possession of Volgin to lure a spy but it was in possession of The Boss to be swapped with the real microfilm at the first chance since stealing the real one was her mission.

    the sorrows crying blood is left open to interpretation? no it's really not, the boss killed the sorrow on a mission by shooting him in the eye. His glasses break in one eye and then his eye bleeds. This is symbolic too of him essentially being the progenitor big boss in terms of role, he lost an eye. This is where the boss learned about her ideals on the changing of the tides, how yesterdays friends are tomorrows enemies, the sorrow was her lover and she had to kill him.
    granted I don't really remember how much of this info is from mgs3 codecs directly and how much is from peacewalker adendums but I'm fairly certain its purely contained in mgs3.

      Yah, I like to think The Boss' slapping Ocelot is a moment of genuinely losing her cool; seeing her lil protege's eye getting shot must've dredged up what is essentially her worst memory. Hey Boss, I'm a big fan of MGS and yours. Your attention to detail and analysis is top notch, and your viewpoint and speculations are nearly identical to mine. In fact, you've noted and pointed out several things in the series that I wouldn't have to put together myself. So, thanks for that. HOWEVER, nearly every MGS theory or analysis video gets at least ONE thing wrong (in my opinion); Big Boss, like The Boss before him, NEVER actually became a villain. He's only painted as a Villain by Zero, and later The Patriot AI's, because he wouldn't play along with them, and was a threat to their system of control. I'd love a video that talks about that, whether it's to agree and highlight this overlooked opinion/theory, or to completely disprove it. Your call Boss...

    • @Jaybird196
      @Jaybird196 4 года назад +1

      I wouldn't even, necessarily, say Zero is entirely responsible. His organization (Cypher) got out of control. Neither, were really villains. They just had opposing philosophies, and misunderstood things, about each other, and the Boss's will. The rest of the world filled in the gaps, with their own misunderstandings, and personal dislikes.

    Masterful analysis! I just wanted to pose one more idea concerning the microfilm to you. In the cutscene, we see Snake disdainfully toss the microfilm aside. However, he is in a pretty fragile emotional state right now, learning that Eva betrayed him but even more than that fully intended on killing him, despite the seemingly genuine emotional connection they formed. I always interpreted Snake tossing the true film away not because he concluded it was a fake, but because he understood he managed to keep control of the true Legacy at the cost of his mentor, his lover, and in a way, he lost his own innocence. The curtain was pulled back and Snake didn't like what he saw, so to speak. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

      I think you’re right in a lot of ways, but Snake would IMO not have realized some of what EVA is saying isn’t true. I don’t even think Snake really realizes until much later that getting the Legacy was really his true mission, because he wasn’t in the need to know so to speak. Then again, as I say in the video, there are only calculated guesses in intelligence, so it’s not exactly definitive one way or the other.

    Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater is my favorite game of all time!! It has everything to me. Action, Betrayal, and great music. It's truly one of the most complete games ever made. The story has twist and turns that you never see coming when you first play it. I loved the deep dive you did into the 3 parts of the story. Ocelot over time has become a great character to me, thou I feel like I never truly know him or what he's up to. I so look forward to all the games getting this deep dive from your channel. Is Big Boss really a dictator and a world menace? As far as my knowledge of the franchise goes (I've played 3 and V, and know the broad strokes of the whole story of the other ones), his actions all have the objective of stopping global powers from treating soldiers as disposable assets like they did with The Boss and later himself; he uses his army and resources to disarm nuclear weapons and tries to build a safe haven for soldiers neglected by their countries. This path comes with a fair share of morally questionable decisions, but I don't think he is really a villain; even if the US/The Patriots/History tries to depict him as one.

    • @gnusch3109
      @gnusch3109 9 месяцев назад +1

      In MG & MG2 he uses child soldiers and victims of war paired with nuclear weapons to force the world to bend to his will.
      These games are old & no one plays them but they really effect all MGS titles that come later. In the first two Big Boss might have good intentions (stopping the patriots) but he‘s a Monster in his actions.

    Having played all the mainline Metal Gear games, I think Big Boss became one of my favorite characters in the media, if not in fiction.
    I know I'm supposed to like Solid Snake more, as he is overall a better person, but I can't help but find Big Boss' story more compelling. Playing MG2 after MGS3 hits really hard when you get to the final fight with Big Boss, not only because you're fighting the Snake you know and came a long journey with, but also because it's a similar scenario to what The Boss and Snake had back in MGS3, only without the introspective look (well, it is there retroactively via MGS1, but not directly in MG2). You're unambiguously one of the good guys, you saved the day, you stopped a global threat, and you did exactly as you were told by your higher-ups, removing the only credible threat to the Patriots.
    Damn it, I love this series.

    Only thing off from the timeline... The Boss says the original members of the Wisemen's Committee died in the '30s, which is right before WWII. This means by the time of the war and 1964, the 'Founding' Philosophers were already ready replaced by the 'Corrupt' Philosophers. As we do not know how the new Philosophers were structured (number of Committee members, able to function without the Legacy or even whether the Legacy started by them or just the half that was recovered, the 'Corrupt' Philosophers possibly splitting into two, etc.), The Boss' 'endless battle' started from her father's death and sadly carried on to Big Boss when she died, making her give him 'her' mission to end the 'Corrupt' Philosophers.

    "The second game chronologically: Peace Walker."
    Me: Bruh. Portable Ops is the second and is canon.
    Kojima may not have directed as he was busy with MGS4 but still contributed to it.
    It's referenced at the beginning of Peace Walker by Kaz in the tutorial area of the first mission after the opening tutorial on the beach in the rain.
    It is included in the PS3 Metal Gear Database, an official Wikipedia-style application to allow players to read up on the Metal Gear canon before MGS4's release.
    Portable Ops include some inconsistencies such as Sokolov somehow surviving, however the Metal Gear series is no stranger to inconsistencies and ret-cons. Plus we never actually confirmed if Sokolov actually died. Volgin may have said he was dead to demoralise Snake by making think he'd failed one of his objectives but in reality Sokolov was barely still alive. His survival could be due to Ocelot who brought him along with Granin's metal gear plans to the west.
    The game's story is also significant in Naked Snake's shift to becoming Big Boss as it is the turning point when Snake has to face up to becoming The Boss's successor and shifting from simply being a soldier to a commander. It also provides a neat look at Metal Gear development with the ICBM Metal Gear and shows some of Zero's earliest moves to form Cipher/the Patriots, wipe out the Philosophers and secure the entirety of the Legacy.
    Oh and a young version of Roy Campbell's in it.

    I absolutely love these videos! My one complaint is I wish you would've talked about snake meeting the president and being named big boss, and how he passed by the cia director without shaking his hand as well as passing by zero. I think he did this because he didn't like what the cia did to the boss in making her a scapegoat and criminal to her country. Also with him passing by zero because he knew a lot about what the mission really was, and didn't let snake know. Because snake felt betrayed by his country for letting the boss die is what leads him down the path to become the 'villain' big boss.

    Hey man, amazing video as always. You´re doing the Lord´s work with these essays. I just wanted to comment about two issues of the game and hear your thoughts about them.
    The first one´s about your take on the Legacy microfilm. I f I understood you correctly, you said that the Boss handed two microfilms both to Snake and Eva, and that you don´t even think that the Boss told Eva that she had given Snake any microfilm at all. In that case, Eva would think that the Boss was actually on the Chinese side, and handed her over the real microfilm. I don´t think there´s any real evidence for Eva to think that the Boss had any allegiance to China, besides her having been an instructor in a charm school. Unlike Snake, who had been kept in the dark with regards to the Legacy mission to keep thinking the Boss was evil and not hesitate to defeat her, Eva knew all along her mission was to steal the Legacy. Therefore, she should had been previously briefed that the Boss was actually on China´s side, and that she would hand her over real microfilm. Because that didn´t happen , Eva shouldn´t have trusted for one second that the Boss was giving her anything but a fake. And I say that it didn´t happen because, even in the case that the Boss had pretended to the Chinese she was an asset to them, I think Eva would have told Snake in the final tape that the boss was a Chinese agent all along -at least that´s what she would think-. Instead, she breaks into tears saying how much of a patriot she was. Meaning American patriot. Maybe I´m missing something, but I just fail to see how things hold up in that scenario. Instead, if you don´t mind, I´d like to show you my take on what happened:
    The Boss hands Snake over the real microfilm before her death. This event is being monitored from the distance by Eva and Ocelot -independently-. Eva is watching it to make sure Snake gets the microfilm. Ocelot is watching to see in what pocket Snake is putting it. After that he raids the WIG and gets into a fist fight with Snake. It´s during this fight that Ocelot will reach into Snake´s pocket and swap the microfilm with a fake of his own. Neither Eva nor Snake can see Ocelot doing it -Snake is too up close, not to mention he´s lost an eye, and Eva is too busy focusing on flying the plane-. It seems Ocelot knows in advance Snake has no formal training in piloting planes, so that it will have to be Snake himself the one to confront him physically while Eva will do the flying, thus allowing him to get very close to Snake. Once he has it, he goes away with the real microfilm, not jeopardizing it by letting it be too close to Eva for too long. In the cabin Eva has another fake microfilm she swaps for Snake´s believing he has the real one, but in fact both microfilms in the cabin are fake. In other words, there are three microfilms, one true, two fake. This explains why Ocelot would attempt to risk his own life in getting into the plane and battle with Snake, beyond mere flamboyance.
    The other issue I have with the story is the character of Eva. Namely the fact that she should know she is being played by the Americans all along. First, she is impersonating a defector that the Americans should know everything about, face and all. I f I meet an agent while I´m impersonating being someone from their own country, I would expect that agent to find out I´m not that person right off the bat. let alone letting me join the mission without even knowing the spy password -a pretty standard procedure-. She even says in the final tape that both NSA defectors were men. How the hell is she so confident about playing her role as an impersonator if the fact that she is a woman is blowing her cover the whole time?
    Now, a few nitpicky things about her:
    She says in the tape that Adam didn´t show up in the abandoned building, saving her the trouble to eliminate him. In any case, she would have had to kill Adam, and also Eva, and then impersonate the latter.
    What´s with the password scene? Zero wants Eva to join the mission because he knows that she´s from China, and thus he can keep that rival in check by monitoring her. However, for the meeting, he gives Snake the password but doesn´t move his threads to relay it to Eva. Instead, I´m assuming, he tells Ocelot to arrange for a group of soldiers to be there so that she can kill them in from of Snake so that he can trust her.
    And one final thing. I think you covered this in the previous video but I didn´t quite get it. It is established that Sokolov and Eva are lovers, which you assumed is a sort of collusion to keep Sokolov in contact with the KGB. However, when Snake meets him in the lab, he says Tanya´s actually Volgin´s lover. Why does he change his cover story with Snake?
    If you ´ve reached down here, congrats, and sorry! Keep up the good work!
