From the Boss & Big Boss to Solid Snake & Raiden, their stories intertwined to suit the Patriots' end. Metal Gear Solid always intrigue me and so want to see more. I wish they did an anime of each title to the T as Hideo Kojima intended.
13:50 if we're going by a postmodern reading, this isn't a loss of identity. the protagonist IS the player-- you are both big boss and the medic, both characters are an extention of the player. if anything Jack (also what BB is called by the Boss) being called Snake at the beginning of MGS2 might have to do with the fact that he's played the role of Snake in VR. The Colonel gives Jack his new name, with the player inserting their own name into his dog tag. Jack is already dealing with multiple identities from the very start of the game. the only way that Jack can ever reclaim his identity is by accepting his past and literally discarding the identities that people made for him, freeing himself from the Patriots' (the player's, the director's) control. Jack rejects his role in the story and decides to become his own person outside of the role that he was given. On the other hand, Venom Snake as an explicit extension of the player-- who's "true" face is chosen by you in the beginning of the game, embraces his role in the story. The moment he does so Venom plays his role until he meets the end that was decided for him by the story itself before he was even an idea. "He was there for you, and yet at the same time he was inaccessible. You felt there was a secret core in him that could never be penetrated, a mysterious center of hiddenness. To imitate him was somehow to participate in that mystery, but it was also to understand that you could never really know him." -The Locked Room
