David Bowie - Space Oddity, Live, 1969

  • Posted by www.nostalgotek... "Space Oddity" is a song written and performed by David Bowie and released as a music single in 1969. It is about the launch of Major Tom, a fictional astronaut; its title alludes to the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, released the previous year. The lyrics have also been seen to lampoon the failed British space programme. The song appears on the album David Bowie (also known as Space Oddity). The BBC featured the song in its television coverage of the Apollo 11 launch and lunar landing, which took place in the days following the release of the song.

On the contrary , I think he's very composed , considering how stripped back and exposed this is. His delivery is very relaxed , even slightly behind the beat , showing real confidence in his ability and his material , especially given that shit-awful lounge band behind him with the drummer from hell.

AutoTune is the work of Satan. To me, it just makes lead vocals sound like audio mush.
Bowie had a remarkably clear tenor-baritone voice, and he knew how to use it to its best effect. What I like about this vid is the give-and-take between Bowie and the "house band." Both sides start out tentatively. Bowie gains confidence, and the band's collective mind taps into that. I mean, geez -- they might have had one full run-through of the song in rehearsal, right? Then, the band is wholly on his side, and they all bring it to a phenomenally energetic finish. It was a genuine breakthrough performance in many ways.

I saw him around this time, he was 3rd on the bill, Iron Butterfly were top and Dada, Robert Palmer and Elkie Brooks band before Vinegar Joe were 2nd and there were two bands below him Samson and Gryphon but it did cost 15 bob a ticket.
He wore an Afghan coat and was scruffier than he is here, although you can't not look scruffy in an Afghan can you? He had one of those very wide guitar straps with a Rolf Harris Stylophone on it that he connected to his sound system. I'd like to say that I recognised that he'd become a massive star but I didn't.

There were some amazing bills in those days. I often wonder how they got them all on and off… I saw a poster the other day in a tribute news item to the late Gerry Marsden (RIP). There were eight bands on the bill, with Gerry and the Pacemakers headlining, and two shows! 615pm and 8 pm. They must have only done one song each!

Yes mate, the sets got longer as the evening went on, they had to really because Iron Butterfly's Ina Gadda da Vida lasted about 15 or 20 minutes but the Roadies earned their corn, there must have been about 25 tons of equipment on stage and 15 miles of cables, and that was just for IB, oh and not forgetting Bowie's Stylophone.
Chrysalis did some great bills as well, Ten Years After, Jethro Tull and Stone the Crows on the same bill for about 8 shillings. Great times. Thanks for the reply.

They wouldn't have heard it. It was only used for the BBC broadcasts about the mission, and it was not a huge hit in the UK in 1969, either. When it was released in the US in 1969, it sank like a stone. Only upon its re-release in 1972 (because of Ziggy Stardust) did it get to #15 in the US and #1 in the UK.

I just don't think that Bowie could pass all the physical tests to become an astronaut, but I would love to see it.
