jr132, Alright, already! You win, man! Ronson’s back-up vocals are great. I wonder why he’s doing Bowie’s high parts, though? Because Bowie’s young here, he wouldn’t have needed Ronson to cover him on the higher parts yet. Are u old enough, or knowledgeable enough to recall when this performance was recorded? And know of any (then) upcoming concerts he had planned? Cuz David might’ve just been trying to save his voice for some concert. Same kinda thing happened to Freddie Mercury and his voice, as he got older. FM began losing the upper ranges of his voice. But, David Bowie isn’t that old, here. Confusing...?
Traekas7! Haha thank you. This says 1973 in the description but I don’t think it’s from then because Bowie broke the Spiders from Mars up before then. This probably aired in 1973. You should check out the Santa Monica 1972 live album.

I'm 61. I also miss the new music from him. One of the first albums i bought was Ziggy Stardust. I had no idea who Bowie was, but the album cover was interesting and I loved the "To be played at maximum volume" note on the back cover. Needless to say I cranked it up to about 8 on my stereo and had my life changed forever. Man music was powerful in the 70's!!!

When i was a kid my parents made me listen to "Raul Seixas", a brazilian rock singer from 1970 that used to sang songs with obscure lyrics.
And one of his songs happened to be one of my favorites when i was a kid, named "O Carimbador Maluco" (something like "The Crazy Stamper"). It was a song about a rocket that couldn't take flight because of too much bureaucracy.
It happened i didn't noticed it was a clear anarchist propaganda, but this must be exactly why im kinda of anarchist today to be completely honest XD

I had seen David and the boys in 72' at The Warehouse in New Orleans, later that night around 02:00I see the band walking on Bourbon St., No one walks up to them and some of them look a little odd ( with green and orange hair etc.), so I introduce myself as a local and offer my assistance telling them where I was headed (as a local). So off we go to "The Dungeon" which was THE after hours hangout then (Very private upstairs members only). Those guys were just regular folks trying to make a living. It was a great experience hanging out with them.

Victoria Reel Yeah, he was an oddity with an open mind and wrote the stories of our lives. The day after he died all the newscasters and other TV people were so sad. They seemed like they listened to his music but I only heard parts of 2 songs in their segway and I bet you all know which ones.

My dear friend Paula was there..in the front row. She was amember of the fan club and won a competition for a ticket. She sat next to Angie & Zowie..and later Wayne County. She said it started at 11am and lasted for hours as they were doing retakes. And that he had a very frugal salad for lunch. She remembers being so close shewas gazing at the light brown hair on his legs , within arm's reach. !! I shall get more info....amazing. We both adore this man..and what he gave us...And Mic was sublime

I remember when this song came out. It was different than anything we'd heard, except for blips of Pink Floyd that hit the US. This song is hauntingly beautiful. When Mick went into the slide for the blast off, I wish whoever made this had left it on him to see how he made it work. Otherwise, a true classic.

David Bowie survived the 70s, the era of "glam rock", ( yuk ) and he definitely matured into a remarkable, wonderful musician and charismatic performer. His accumulated works, which were studio engineered and published, amount to an impressive achievement.
Mind you, David may well look queer in some of his early costumes, but that was the look he was going for. It's how "us kids" used to like. Bowie the trendsetting trendbreaking master.

Glam Rock was great, think about Queen and even just his time as Ziggy Stardust.

When Bowie wrote this song he was still very young. this amazes me, in the era of psychedelic rock, this is one of the most beautiful things to happen to music
I remember the night this first aired on "The Midnight Special" in 1973. I was 8 and my brother was 9. We were night owls and watched this show almost every week. On this particular night, our eyes were glued to the TV. The next day I took my allowance to the record store and bought the 45 of this song. To say that Bowie was a genius is a serious understatement.

He was a unique talent, and the word "unique" is misused every day by idiots who do not know what it means. It means literally "ONE OF A KIND," and therefor nothing can be "VERY" unique. Something is either UNIQUE or it is NOT, and David Bowie was UNIQUE! There will never be another like him, and I am so grateful that he contributed to the amazing soundtrack of my youth and young adulthood.

David really changed my life. After listening to his music and watching him live, I realized there is more to myself. That I shouldn’t hide who I am in fear of being rejected. I may be an outcast but there are others like me out there. David taught me it’s okay to be a little weird. I also got the courage to come out as bisexual and genderfluid through the whole not caring about being ‘different’ thing.

Taking a holistic view of Bowie over the years - compare this to Lazarus - and realize that there was 43 years in between. Still a showman, still intense, still focused, still a consummate performer. As ever he was, ever he will be. Forever.
There was no rock artist as charismatic as Bowie.

Suq Madiq Absolutely fantastic band! My favourite Bowie era was with The Spiders from Mars. So many albums in a short period! The later 70's "Berlin" era of LOW, LODGER, HEROES were very ground breaking. 1980 saw SCARY MONSTERS AND SUPER CREEPS. Wow! Just when he was being written out as "the past", with new acts like Gary Numan, Human League, Depeche Mode etc as "the future"! Imitators! Bowie ruled and still does posthumously! ⚡ ❤ 👍

I am also 63. Bowie fan since July 1972 @ 14 yrs. old, when I bought my first David album "Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars". And to this day...I am just mezmerized by him in this video, along with Mick. The Black Star shines forever
The work of David Bowie, his musical work anyway is unique; for an Artist to be a pop artist (meaning musical Artist, pop music), maintaining individuality while continually experimenting, and reinventing themselves when it suits them, to my of thinking makes them a true Artist. A very difficult quality to achieve in popular culture. I come from the world of modern jazz and Blues so some might think I wouldn't recognise his work .Well I will some it up in one word; FANTASTIC

No doubt my favorite performer of all time. I know be was not a big fan of himself at this time. But man, could he write music. Everyone wanted to see Bowie perform as this persona our that persona. But he was himself and no one ever told him what to be. I miss him alot. Incredibly sad when he died. So glad I got to see him live so many times.

Great bassline, playing it's own melody. You can feel the influence of McCartney and the Beatles were huge at that time, same for the drums and Bowie's interpretation, very close to Lennon.

I was introduced to David Bowie's music with this song and I was addicted to music ever since. RIP my hero.
I get into phases where I want to learn and hear EVERYTHING from a band or musicians in general, books,,bootlegs, rarities, documentaries....EVERYTHING ( trust me this is getting to my pont). First it was The Beatles, then The Monkees ( highly underrated, " Me and Magdalena "proved that Mike and Micky provided one of the best Harmonies IMHO.), then The Who, The Beach Boys, Frank Zappa and NOW David Bowie. I have always loved Bowies Music, but now ? I'm at the "phase " again . That's why I recommend the Documentary "Finding Fame" .... it shows the Tenacity and Never Give Up attitude that David Bowie had. He certainly wasn't an overnight sensation and The Documentary shows this. Mick Ronson was very crucial to Bowies success. In fact, you couldn't find a better band than the one Bowie had backing him in the early 1970's
