Hey my name is Tom and I don't know how to explain this, but this is something my daughter and I share this. No one else could understand what these lyrics mean to us.
He actually took a song and made it sound and feel like an astronaut who's floating helplessly through the void of space into nothingness, and at the same time, somehow made it a perfect metaphor for every day life. What an amazing piece of art.
Im 13, when I first heard this song....and many of his others....I thought they were kind of strange, not gonna lie. But here I am, back here for the 5th time, and continueously being asked what song it is im humming to in class.
that reminds me of that scene from 2001: a space odyssey where hal9000 ejects the astronaut from the capsule; frightening but shows the true beautiful nothingness of space
You actually are an astronaut floating through space. "Your circuit's dead, there's something wrong. Can you hear me Major Tom? Can you hear me Major Tom?"
*Jesus picks up bread*This is my body *Jesus picks up glass of wine* This is my blood *Jesus picks up mayo* *Matthew* i'm gonna have to stop you right there.
Probably Bowie´s greatest song. I can well imagine him gently floating through space now with a smile on his face thinking of the enigma he has left behind on planet earth.
He was one of a kind! Each and everyone of his songs he sang sounded totally different from the others. He was absolutely a true artist in every sense of the word. A musical genius. He wrote the song ( The Man Who Sold The World ), which Curt Cobain sang beautifully, on Nirvana‘s unplugged album. What a wonderfully talented man David Bowie was we will never have another one like him.
I woke up this morning hearing part of this song playing in my head. I got my phone out and googled "here I am sitting in a tin can" to see if I could find the song. Tears came to my eyes and I felt at peace. My father passed away last month and for some reason this song resonates with me. I have been so down since he left and to be honest quite lost and lonely. I'm not sure why I am sharing these feelings here, but talking about my dad makes me feel better. I've never felt this way in my life. I'm 42 and my father was 75 years old. Everyone tells me it will get better and it's normal to grief but it hasn't yet. The only thing that has helped me from being so upset I'm sorry to say has been drugs. I know it's just numbing me and it's not the right thing to do. I hope anyone reading this can relate. Life is so short and unfair at times but I know deep down there's a way through the mess. I was happy once and will be again at some point. Don't ever give up on yourself, you'll make it through the mess. Love you Dad

This song and the movie The sailor who fell from grace with the sea always trigger thoughts and memories of the sacrifices sailor Airlines’s pilots, and others who spend their life’s on the road while making a living. Being away from love ones who love them. From boys dreaming of fame and glory and men who decide that love and family are more important than anything else we can do with our manhood.

I was a latch key kid in the 70’s. I put the dinner on for the family, did my homework and listened to my older brother’s Bowie albums. Safe times and great memories. Thanks David.
This morning I played it 5 times, when home I will play again many times🙏🙏🤗🤗And I will play this on my guitar many times as much as I want🎸🎸😎 Yes indeed a masterpiece 👌👌👌
Space Oddity, is a melodic masterpiece. A perfect vehicle. Of which to land, from outer space. David Bowie, must be so proud. That he actually wrote this very unique and, powerful song.
+OhioGentleman ..lol....not that the way people write matter or anything,i even have a strange typing 'way....but what you just said was fuckin' hilarious....
Everyone is talking about the "tell my wife I love her she knows" line but for me it's "the stars look very different today" that absolutely crushes me
I love the simplicity of the perspective of being famous: "And now the papers want to know whose shirts you wear". This is so pure and simple, being famous brings a lot of incredible things, but he only pays attention about this little part, this is so innocent, just love this part
being famous brings a lot of attention for doing something anyone can do. its a chore, and an incredibly hard one at that, just because people know who you are, and you have a lot of money in the bank, doesnt make you happy.
i took as more of a satire on the public’s interest in famous people, major tom is in space, yet all people want to know is his fashion choices, which is pretty trivial considering lol, i guess interpretation is in the eye of the beholder lol
N Q, I wonder what he means when he sings that line. "Tell my wife I lover her very much, she knows" Does he mean "she knows" he is gay? Or does he mean, "she knows" I love her? Any thoughts on that anyone? Dusty the 2nd.
No matter where I am in my life, there’s always a Bowie’s song to make me face my owns feelings . This one even more than the others… I’ll love this artist forever and thanks for him to show me what true art is
@@stefxcThis song, imo, carries a different meaning before and after his death, for instance. In different decades, its related to.different themes and metaphores. It also depends on where you re listening it from. The song no longer belongs to the artist. It s about drugs, or death, or adventure, or melancholy, or space age, or a thousand more things.
This song honestly gives me the chills and makes me feel alone. That must be how it feels to be an astronaut in space. It must feel so lonely and dark.
Woke up with this song on my mind. I started to reminisce about the past and in my minds eye I relived the time I saw him do this in concert. I was in high school at the time. I am one of many people that were lucky enough to see this done live. He was lifted up above the audience on a large arm floating in a most peculiar way. Thanks for the memories!

"For here am I sitting in a tin can, far above the world, planet earth is blue and there is nothing I can do"........when the song breaks into this gorgeous harmony with these words, I always tear up. Our relatively short voyages into space are truly in space ships not unlike a fragile tin can. The astronaut, Tom, is at a distance from Earth far enough to feel a profound sense of being separated from everything he has known and he is completely aware that "there is nothing" he can do to guarantee his safe return to his beautiful, blue planet. Just lovely and heart rending.....
+Eliz. Sebaugh I don't even think he was before his time. He was his very own point in time, and nobody will ever truly be able to recreate him. o7, Major Tom.
My daughter has loved this song since she was around 4. She's 18 now and still has the same good taste in music. Hope the same happens with your little girl.
I just played it getting ready for another day in the corporate jungle and started crying 😭 thinking of my friend who passed, and what it feels like to be alone, but also the times we wish to be anywhere but planet earth. My boyfriend came in and said are you crying? I'm like no I'm not 😢🥺🥺
Yes, agree. To me, it was and still is about letting go and discovering your true self, without all the conveniences of a support system. David Bowie was a genius.

I feel the same, and I'm 70. In my last (and first) novel I made use of some lines: "Commencing countdown. Engines on." and "Check ignition and may God's love be with you." In my opinion Ziggy's song is more optimistic and sanguine than most people say.

I read your comment as he sing it lol
He was a true music rock star
i took as more of a satire on the public’s interest in famous people, major tom is in space, yet all people want to know is his fashion choices, which is pretty trivial considering lol, i guess interpretation is in the eye of the beholder lol

And the stars look very different today
For here am I sitting in a tin can

And there's nothing I can do
Though I'm past one hundred thousand miles
