I really love how special Young Americans always sounded live. Whether it was intentional or not, whenever David would go off script during this song I would always love it. When he asks "Happy?" at 5:10 and then says "aw you're no fun", I really think it just shows how much of a light he could have been to others around him.
I miss that light a lot.

I remember seeing this when it aired, and I was kind of in disbelief, because it was a big step away from what he'd been doing only a few years before. Now, when I see it again, it is just a strange and a very unique performance from David Bowie. That is why it is really kind of important to watch now, because it shows a side of David Bowie we never saw otherwise, in his long career.

I saw this episode of The Sonny & Cher show when it first aired. Cher was my idol and later I discovered Bowie.
I think this was Cher's show- not Sonny and Cher's show. I may be mistaken.

This was 1975, and Bowie's first appearance on American television. When you consider his first album was 1967, 8 years was a long time for him to get there. There's a reason he accepted Cher's offer to appear on her show. He had respect for her work.
There was also the 1973 floorshow thing that I don't think aired, and cracked actor "documentary" which basically showed him as a junkie. But I think he was also on soul train and dick cavett the same year
