  • It can save you money in some cases, but it can also mean useless cartridges that are deactivated.

They implemented a firmware update to their printers which forced people to then subscribe to their ink service as they found out they could no longer use 3rd party ink cartridges. Just avoid this company when wanting a new printer.

Close to a scam. Close to? LOL.
HP headquarters should be a 300 foot deep pond by now. But seriously, they should not be able to do business or advertise in this country.
And if they again do a firmware update that disables ink I paid for I am going to be very busy.

I also have an Epson Eco (16650) and I love it. Prints up to 13”x19”. I got a free ink refill during the first two years. Very economical and somewhat more environmentally friendly.

It's not close to a scam, it IS a scam! Cannon is doing close to the same thing.

My grandma is hellbent on buying an HP printer. We have an EPSON ET-4750 and I am trying to convince her to buy one of those to avoid HP's scummy practices with printers.
We have never had to replace color cartridges and we have used it for years.

I have the Epson ET-2750 Eco-Tank and I am still on the original color cartridges three years later. I have only added black several times. I always had HP printers and set my printer to default to black ink only. I still had to replace my color cartridges every three months. The printers would run internal print diagnostics and the inside bottom of the printer would be saturated with old ink. Its a rip-off HP has gotten away with for a long time. I would never go back.

I'm running an Epson L3210 using third party ink. CMYK 70ml each costs less than $4. Takes me about 2 years to use up color, maybe 1 year for black. Way better than $1.50 a month.

Many years ago back in the days of Windows XP I had an HP A3 printer, that was a very expensive item. When Windows moved on to their next version HP did not release drivers for the new Windows operating system. This ment that I had to run a second PC on XP just to keep the expensive HP printer working. Since then I have never used HP printers. Their business practices are greedy to say the least.

I do not even own a printer. I only print a small handful of pages a year, so it doesn't make sense to spend money on a printer. I just go to the library and use the printer there, it is cheaper for me to pay them by the page.

This is a perfectly good "service". HP owns the cartridges and clearly says that you can cancel anytime and go back to using regular cartridges. I think AUD$1.99 per month for 10 pages is actually really good. If you don't print much, how many times have you gone to use your printer and the cartridge is dry etc ? HP would send you another set under the subscription.

I'm sure I'm just not understanding or didn't listen closely enough, but why do people sign up for this? I have an HP printer (laser not inkjet, purchased a couple of years ago) and the HP Smart app seems to give me the option for Instant Ink (at least, it has the button but I'm afraid to click on it LOL!). But anyway, true, I'm not a heavy printer but the one time I needed a toner cartridge I just drove to an office store. Are there some HP printer models that force you to subscribe and others that don't?

Had to block my HP printers from firmware updates since they stopped people using remanufactured cartridges. Not only is this anti-competitive but illegal in some countries. I hope they have their cheque book ready to pay the EU fine when it arrives...

Good video. I have a question.Does this apply only if one subcribes toinstant ink, and then comes out of it? I have an HP printer, which I hardly ever use and there's currently no ink in it (to save the print heads). I have never used their "instant ink" offers, and I buy ink as and when I need it.

iam hp sub you have a limit to print a month so if you cancel and are at your page limit, dont expect to use the remainder of the in left ink the cartridge.and it works out cheaper for me

I suspect one of the reasons they do this is to prevent people from signing up and paying one month and installing the cartridges and then cancelling.

I’m an HP Instant ink subscriber and the cost of the cartridge’s if I bought from retail stores would cost me double what the yearly subscription costs. For myself it is a definite win situation.

I paid for 3 years, received one set of cartridges, used 1 black and still have 4 cartridges that I paid about $300, realizing that I could have purchase the ink for $108, I wanted to cancel but now I can't use the ink that I purchased! Totally unfair, that I paid for this ink over the 3 years and now it will be useless! AND they have the nerve to shut it off at the end of my cycle but BILL me and Additional month!

I have an OfficeJet 3830 printer & it did not have those "embedded chips" in the cartridge & force me to subscribe to Instant Ink.
I DO though have a subscription with Instant Ink & I really value the subscription service in that it has the ability to know via the printer's WiFi network connection when u are low on ink, it will send u more & it's solely based on your own frequency of how much you print by pages.
The cartridge's will be bigger than the biggest ones u will find @ most retail stores.
THIS IS 4 ME, VERY MUCH NOT A SCAM & IS A VERY MUCH APPRECIATED SERVICE TO HAVE.
All of my printers have been purchased retail & not online & have never forced me to subscribe to any service & this is the 1st printer to have an Internet connection 4 me that can offer me the Instant Ink program, by the way.
