How To Survive Monterey Car Week - Carmudgeon Show with Jason Cammisa & Derek Tam-Scott - Ep. 110

- Monterey Car Week is the week-long event leading up to the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, and the Carmudgeons made it through unscathed!
Jason's Honda Beat didn't - it wound up getting towed 148 miles home using Hagerty Roadside Assistance. Instead, the well-traveled Rover 3500 SD1 provided Jason's transportation needs. Derek relied on his reliable Citroën CX.
The week is a nonstop celebration of cars, with literal dozens of events from manufacturer debuts and parties to single-marque car shows like the Werks Porsche Reunion to single-country shows like Legends of the Autobahn or Concorso Italiano. Then, of course, there's the Quail, a Motorsports Gathering, the Little Car Show, the Grassroots Motorsports kickoff party, Motorlux at the Monterey Jet Center, auctions by Broad Arrow, RM Sotheby's, Gooding, and Barrett-Jackson - to name just a few.
And that's not even mentioning the Concours itself, or the 2 weeks of nonstop vintage racing at Laguna Seca.
It's impossible to see even half of the events during car week - but here's a guide to surviving the most amazing car week of the year.

Don't think you overpaid for the Rover, it did a couple thousand miles without leaving you stranded. That thing is priceless!
The owner of that evo 2, also has a 997 GT2, Alpina B10 Bi-Turbo, 22B, HF Integrale... He has impeccable taste in cars.
JC, may ur friend RIP who passed away in his sleep. Appreciate the PHA (public health announcement). Also good heads up on old Hondas rotating counter clockwise, I think it was to save a gear in the transmission by OG Mr Honda. Glad the Beat lives on.
I’m sure many young people know of the SD1 from Top Gear’s British Leyland Special
I think its actually because of Forza Horizon 4, there was an update where they added it and it was a kind of rare car to get, so kids that kind of want to complete the game or get all rare cars would try to get one, in game auction house was really expensive and rare to find one!
Jason worked on his Honda recently, it broke down now. Coincidence?
I think not
There was also a Citroën DS convertible on the Peninsula, 1 of 1365 made. I met the owner in Eureka, on his way down to Monterey.
I've never heard this explanation for the Oxford comma, but it is by far one of the easiest to digest and one that I will use from now on. Love this show!!!
How about this one: I'd like to thank my parents, Jesus and Mother Theresa.
A panda enters a restaurant, eats shoots and leaves.
Those are great as well!!!
"Let's eat, Grandma", vs "Let's eat Grandma"
We live in strange times when a Rover is more reliable than a Honda...
The only Rovers left are probably among the better ones, or worth decades of maintenance at least.
Personally, I love the random tangents like the Oxford comma
27:46 is highlight of the episode for me
I just LOOOVE you both guys!!! Cheers from Spain!
Thank you for your time and effort
Still no Piëch though 😢
Holy shit, I really learned about the Oxford Comma in this podcast, a concept I wasn't familiar with. I giggled for about 5 minutes afterwards, imagining the twisted possibilities of not using it.
The Associated Press style book does not require the Oxford Comma, so a great number of American journalists do not use it. I can't understand that stance for the life of me.
DDE needs to learn some restraint. I get their whole personas are driving exotics like they’re miatas, but then they complain, and act like the police are always in the wrong even though they were probably a large portion of the midnight Lamborghini noises.
I’m sorry about your friend, Jason. As you said, the only silver lining is he didn’t suffer.
This show is always worth every minute
Jason, you bring-it when you solo'
As one of the field hosts for the PBC, agreed on the vibe at Dawn Patrol- highly recommend. Also pretty cool to be on the field when judging is happening, just to overhear the conversations and stories told between entrants and judges (and vice versa).
" What the fuck is that?" 😂😂😂
Back on time! Woo!
Don't understand the loud exhaust thing. Just returned from Corvettes at Carlilse. People were changing exhausts on C8 Z06s. After GM specially designed the exhaust to work for the flat plane crank. Similar to those who replaced the titanium exhausts on the C5 Z06s to something that was much heavier but fulfilled the owners desire to make noise.
Fun episode, guys! Thanks!
cool weekend, guys!
Could we get a Porsche transaxle episode? I'm fed up with 911 a bit.
I had to laugh at the random dude who shouted WTF is that! Same thing happened to me with one of my customers who has a 65 Corvair Corsa CV saw my CX parked outside the shop. Only he was not enthusiastic. I smiled at him and said that happens to my my car. Then I said just keep starring at it. It will grow on you😂
Hyphen is FSI people now! Make sure you check the cam follower for the fuel pump. They wear out and destroy the cam and pump.
"WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?!" 😂
Sounds like Derek got a 2006 EA113 (FSI) GTI? I still have mine, bought new in August 2006.
If you haven't already, you should read "Eats, Shoots & Leaves" by Lynne Truss. It's a very funny look at grammar and punctuation.
Where is the link to hagerty drivers club 🤣 i think you guys forgot to add it
I’m so bummed I didn’t get to bring my Alfa Giulia down, fresh with its Carabinieri livery … but oh well
Der vierte September ist kein offizieller Feiertag, ein ausfallen der Episode ist somit nicht genehmigungsfähig. Wir erwarten die nächste Folge pünktlich.
And have a nice Holiday ;)
Carmudgeons do Woodward Dream Cruise when?
I would LOVE to hear you roast my first car. I think that’d be a fun episode for a lot of peoppe
It wasn’t the DDE people, it was Gumball. They have a gumball sponsorship so their logos are on other cars.
Pebble Beach is the best, you guys are missing out
That Virage shooting brake is amaaaazing 🤑
#rant: Why is this shape not more popular? Why is the Audi RS5 sportback a thing when they could've taken the back of an RS6 Avant and put it on the coupe creating a much better thing? Is it the buying public that lacks imagination and individuality? Or the car companies? The world needs more clown shoes. /rant
please level up both mics on the next episode
Jason needs a compressor as he's inaudible almost every other sentence
Whoa! Sorry about this
Y'all are awesome.
As you both speak german, i got a "german comma importance exmplanation" for you: Satzzeichen können Leben retten: Wir essen(,) Opa.
thoughts on the bmw 840i GC or a good alternative that has 4 doors?
What did you guys think of the new old lotus racecar? Id like to see it turn into a trend as it seems the track specials are almost too fast these days. (Although i do think they are very cool(
I know being part of Hagerty Podcast you probably can't, but I'd legit 100% give you $$$$ if you had a Patreon.
Also, I believe it was the pre-Car week episode about not breaking down when you were discussingthe cars you were taking.....Hyphen cursed you Jason
The Oxford Comma is irritating. A Lotus episode sounds fun - please talk about the Etna, Eclat, and Excel! ;) Derek, can I buy an extremely small fraction of your Citroen?
Any chance you guys will be reviewing the Tuthill Porsche 911k in the near future? pleaseeeeeeeeeeee
I certainly hope so!
People who grow up watching top gear would definitely know to identify the SD1. Yes those episodes were old, but modern seas of the internet allows for easy plundering of media content.
"The gay fat" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hyphen!!!
I would think some younger people might know the SD from Forza Horizon
I would say the Geneva Motorshow was a good place to see freaks, eurotrash and people watch. I think Pebble would be similar
Review the current Volvo V60 - diesel preferably.
I’m sure this makes me sound like an even bigger jerk than I actually am, but I’ve come to actively loathe entire swaths of the car culture. Not necessarily the cars themselves - I appreciate all kinds of ridiculous stuff in that respect. The people participating, not so much.
It’s a tough thing to admit, because I’ve definitely met some of the very best people through this thing of ours. Truly outstanding souls without whom my life would undoubtedly be poorer.
But the number of insufferable booger-eaters is staggering. The bench-racers and status-seeking badge-fanatics are irritating. It would be amusing to watch them fight it out, constructing facsimiles of a personal identity based around an affection for cars they’ve never even driven, if they weren’t so determined to ruin it for everyone else.
And then there are the dilbangers who see any kind of enthusiast-oriented vehicle and think it means you want to play with them. Like, get out of here with that. You see me out on the road and want to get too close, that’s how I immediately know you are not my kind of car person.
But I still think I’ll probably go to Car Week next year. 😂
You just have to steer into the offensiveness, offend so much it becomes meaningless.
