Sorry for being a day late, fans! The Carmudgeons were on-location recording a forthcoming set of videos for the Hagerty Channel!
Jason and Hyphen have asked you to pose your questions, and as usual, you've proven that the Carmudgeon Audience is a bunch of smart, interesting humans. The questions were thought-provoking and intelligent.
And so numerous that we couldn't finish answering them in the previous episode, including:
- What's a great weekend ride for under $35,000?
- Why don't we love the BMW 2002? [Because the E30 is better?]
- White-elephant car gift? [Bentley Turbo R?]
- Practical snow-worthy fun daily driver? [E90 335i xDrive or R32 Golf]
- What mods would you do to a 911 Carrera SC?
- What about a Self-Driving BMW? Ultimate Riding Machine?
- Why is the Small Block better than Ford's Voodoo GT350?
- Talk about Double-Wishbone Hondas
- Does the new BRZ have rev-hang?
- Dirtfish Rally School (or Team O'Neill?)
- How to become a better driver - track school?
- What does the 2025 Toyota MR2 need to be successful?
- Why do cars no longer have spare tires?
- Do you get used to 800-hp Ferraris? Speed vs. Experience?
- Have we ever driven an SVT Focus?
- First car on our spreadsheet: Mazda5 manual
- Should journalists include brand reputation and reliability?
- Can the buyers of a car ruin its reputation? See: Altima Driver!
- Subaru Drivers are the Worst Drivers on the planet
- Will people modify their EVs? Yes, absolutely.
- McLaren GT's brake feel?
- Are Alfa 105s good to drive?
- Why didn't Derek like his 991.2 Porsche 911 GT3 Touring
- Are modern cars just made out of parts from suppliers? (Let's talk Tesla!)
- Why doesn't Hagerty insure 18-year-old drivers?
- Will we be able to resist driving an EV for the next 40 or 50 years?
- What's with the cheat code on the Lotus Omega / Carlton?
- Motorcycle vs Car enthusiasts - are we the same?
...and more. We'll finish them another time!

Shout out to the editor for adding some visual spice for us RUclips peasants.
I think Paolo is becoming sentient.
The editor had some fun with the zoom on this one!
Zoomer editor confirmed :^)
The camera cuts, zooms, and edits on this are 12 / 10. As a visual enjoyer of this audio medium, I can only hope there's more of this going forward!
Question for the next instalment (or it could be a whole episode) : Can you both do a retrospective on your personal cars history ? Why you bought them, why you sold them (or kept them), do you regret selling them, etc.
So glad to see this week’s episode hit. I was worried we might not get one this week. Y’all are easily my favorite car related podcast/show on here.
Sorry about being late!
@@JasonCammisaI also very much agree experience is far better than speed. Having two young kids, I’m missing my NC Miata right now.
The editor is the best part of the episode!
116 episodes and still no Randy Pobst guest speaker, WTF!!!
Somehow I really thought about this before... Randy could totally mudgeon with Jason and Derek.
Just a idea
I loved the dinamic of the Carmudgeon show when it was at the ISSIMI workshop
It felt like a spontanious bickering and interaction between you 2 while off focus you could see a Enzo or a Delta Evo 2 in the background and sometimes engine sound, it gave the authenticity that this podcast deserves !!
I laughed at 2:59 because it sounded absurd, then I realized I totally agree.
I heard the cutaway on the audio only podcast and it really caught me off guard
Cammisa is clearly a Chrysler TC by Maserati! A rare blend of 80’s America and Italian shityness. It is too heavy, looks cheap while costing a fortune, and is a lot more fun than you would admit to in polite society…
I was going to suggest Challenger as loud, obese, with a mix of Italian, German, American…. But I think you win..
The editor had some real fun on this one...new person or someone trying something new?
I know it’s only a day late, but it felt like forever…..
I am so happy to see there is actually a episode this week.
You guys say interesting things. I really enjoy your podcast.
In questions that are generally 'what is a good weekend car for under $30-40k?', I'm always expecting a Corvette to be mentioned for some reason. Is the reason it's not due to driving dynamics compared to the competition? In what situation would you mention one or recommend one?
I'm mostly biased because I'm hopelessly enamored with the C5, but interested on your input.
I thought you guys abandoned us this week.
This made my day, had a very long and annoying work day. Came home to this, thank you!
dear editor, please add in more image inserts as theyre on screen for so little time and i find myself having to rewind the chat to understand cars that the boys are on about, great vid as always love this show!
Yay i love Q&A episodes!
I actually saw an Espada street parked last week right in the centre of cologne and thought - wow, I've never seen this car in person before. Then I looked at the interior and thought: okay, it apparently isn't a garage queen and THEN it hit me: who actually drives an Espada right into the city centre where it could be scratched up and dinged into?! Quite a cool person, I guess.. :)
Anyway, really like those Q&A-Episodes, would very much like to be able to argue with you but just listening to your thoughts is a joy!
All hail the algae rhythm ! 🎶💃🕺🎶
*Ill hide this way down here, Im a little too high for todays edit lol 🤷♂
Super glad to find this episode today, thank you,
Dan & Candy. 🙏❤
🧙♂🍄❤🐶
Excellent episode, as a Porsche 997 owner and a motorcycle rider (KTM 1090 adventure) I completely agree with Derek. Motorcycles offer tremendous bang for the buck.
I lost it with those zooms
Appreciate you guys taking the time to answer my 90’s double wishbone question! Sounds like Jason needs a go in a properly setup K swap car asap! Cheers gents
When I was 16 my dad sent me to a few driving schools before touching any of the fun cars. Afterwards it was made very clear to me that I learned how to drive fast to be safe not to go crazy on the road. If my dad had heard of me doing anything stupid I would have been limited to driving the early 90s pickup that he bought to insure me on instead of all the really nice cars I was actually driving haha. Now I've been a Hagerty customer for years and I turned 16 in 99 so I can admit this! Unfortunately I didn't have Hagerty when my restomod 911SC was stolen 😭😭😭
Loving the new editing style. Also, thoughts on rotaries from a driving enjoyment perspective?
I would assume they would put a hybrid version of the GR Yaris' turbo 3 pot into the theoretical MR2
I mean that turbo 3 cyl already makes 300 horsepower. Any more power than that from an electric motor and the theoretical MR2 would cannibalize the Mk5 Supra. Although I'm drooling just thinking about a mid engine rear drive proper sports car model with that engine
they could do it with 2AR-FE inline4 and make it NA without stepping on toes of the Corolla, but for my two cents it's makes no sense with a GR86 on the catalogue
The 2AR isn't in production anymore. They'd have to pull an engine from their existing lineup if this comes out in the back half of the decade. Also, idk if you've driven a mid-engine car but a Cayman/Boxster, older MR2, etc have VASTLY different handling characteristics from a front-engine 86/BRZ. And with how expensive mid-engine cars are to produce, it'd have to be priced close to Boxster/Cayman range
@@deathcab4booty didn't know that, giving a quick look all new toyota's inline4 are a bit too much undersquarish for the cause. You're complety right about the experience but I really doubt that a company can comunicate the difference between a MR and a FR in the same price ballpark and make a economic viable. If it was a cayman killer, the gr corolla i3 seems a bit of a sterchy for a nimbler car, adding a cylinder to that engine is costly for emissions, actual inline 4 turbos aren't cool, and the v6 could kill the lotus. not a cool dilemma
I learned a lot in a day with a (racing) driving instructor on public roads. Mostly in the Netherlands (how do you take an off ramp quickly, how to manage ABS, etc) although we did a stint in the Oberhausen Straight (autobahn). Doing an emergency stop from 250km/h was an experience. Learned a lot.
How about an episode discussing the pro and cons, faves and hates, best and worst applications of, the different types of suspension systems?
Maserati Quattroporte Duoselect (or any of the F1 transmission cars) would be a great white elephant!
Or a SAAB Sensonic car if they live anywhere near a hill
Fun editing in this episode, a bit extreme but not necessarily in a bad way, great episode!
Do another one of these! Please!
The edit was f*cking gold, great show as always.
please do one more!
More, please!
I wish this was a daily morning show I could watch while riding the train to work everyday. 😊
Do an episode on why we don't have the little pickups anymore. I loved my '92 Isuzu. $5700 all told back when I bought it new.
Took it to the junk yard last year after it sat in my barn for more than a decade. Had a hard time letting go.
Nice tshirt Jason! 🌹
You boys have to drive a 510. Amazing chassis. My buddy has a 72 with a L18 swap, Weber carbs and a great suspension set up. Tons of fun.
Do more of these
Guys I know you love Euro cars but you should also do some content about some American icons.
Here in Europe all American cars like my C5 Corvette are taken as exotics cuz it's rare to see them. This car with it's shitty quality but good looking interior, beautiful and clean design, popup h/l, rear mounted trans, manual transmission, a marvelous V8, very good cornering capabilities... Sorry, I'm in love of my car 😅.
Would be nice to hear a couple of phrases about these cars. Cheers from Spain guys!
Missed you Monday! 😃
Would love to hear Derek"s take on a well sorted 80s/90s Honda!
The thing about the BMW AWD system, I suppose for yes daily driving it'll be fine but if you put it in a snowy rallycross, it's losing to a basic old impreza every time because it doesn't put enough power up front. The Subaru is faster in winter, and more capable, but... not that fun. They will understeer unless you drive them right, and honestly, the more basic Subarus are more fun in the winter because you can feel the weight transfer better.
Loving the new edits 😂
I’m bummed that I missed you guys at the Detroit Concourse. I was at Radwood in Detroit and heard that the Concourse was happening but unfortunately wasn’t able to make it out.
Thanks for the "spare rant"!!! Where can i sign?
Had a flat tyre that cost me 12 hours! (The mobilit warranty of the car manufacturer had to organize and pay a hotelroom and a train ticket for me instead of me just putting on a spare and slowly make my way home the 100km that were left. Luckily i was able to get a "folding spare" for that car, so now i have a spare and that won't happen with that car anymore.)
34:16 for any mk7 owners without a spare tire, there's an OEM spare tire kit you can buy and it comes with all the tools and trim necessary
Jason would be a DeTomaso, definitely
This episode was uniquely hilarious. Did you guys drop acid before?
Derek would be a Lancia.
My first car driven was a Top Gear favorite - 1975 Austin Marina 4-speed
How many doors ?
@@tonyclewes8 4-door
Ohhhh, got to second the 335i suggestion. My 335i rwd manual Touring is super fun in the winters here in Sweden!
Winter?! Are you crazy? 😅 It’s too nice for salt and snow, get a shitbox Honda for the winter. Lol
@@TML34 haha, sort of agree about the crazy! The shitbox is the plan for winters when the 335 gets some work done next summer.
Looks like they gave the video editor a raise, love it!
I adore my BRZ, along with its spare full size tire.
No way someone asked about the focus I was wanting to ask haha. I have a 03 with a Jackson racing supercharger.
Missing the Acura TL SHAWD 6MT for the snow-worthy daily
I'd like to insure my '89 CRX Si with Hagerty, but I'm too young also. I'm 19. Our provincial insurance monopoly called 'ICBC' here in Canada will write off anything more than 15-20 years old for as little as a parking lot speed rear-ending.
I'm sorry to hear how fragile your CRX can be due to insurance. It would be nice of Hagerty to create a youth policy...
Great episode...snow worthy fun to drive car? 2018 Focus RS with a tune, exhaust and suspension mods. Done.
The answer you guys were looking for for a fun snow car to replace a wrx is a Volvo v70 ether in an v70r or the later t6 the other left field answer although it requires dealing with a grey import is a Mitsubishi legnum vr4
I’m listening to the “snow-worthy WRX replacement” question and screaming “B8 Audi S4!!!” at my screen. Manual gearbox and sport differential are necessary here.
Just FYI, I work for a dealership group that has Ford and the Ecoboost engines are terrible for long term reliability. Timing chains, turbos and cam sprockets rarely make it passed 80,000 miles and are very expensive repairs for someone that does not work on vehicles themselves.
How do we send questions for the next show ? I read the article on Hagerty on the Jaguar XJ. Guys, do a show on the XJ and it's history similar to that done for the 911 .
I’ve been wondering where is this Driving Center Tikenau located as it’s coral reef. After few minutes and a sip of coffee I noticed my mistake.
Yep, Q&As are entertaining so you could do more and I would be OK with that so go ahead.
Glad I put a cammed M20 in my 2002
Im here, with my e34 530i wagon
Best editing ever! Lmfao
Can you tell me about the cheater program on the Lotus Omega? Where did you learn about that? Recently bought the Omega on Bring-A-Trailer and interested in learning more. Cheers!
I laughed at 9:30 because my first car was an automatic W8 wagon that I bought for (when you convert NZD to USD) under $1000usd. It had 240,XXXKMs on the clock when I bought it. My second car is a 6 speed B6 Audi wagon. So far the Audi has been more reliable though everything on the W8 went wrong at the end of ownership. It was still relatively reliable drivetrain wise with the only issue being a faulty camshaft sensor. Everything else in that car went wrong first.
"everything... went wrong at the end of ownership" tells us all we need to know
@@productdesign9626 I couldn't justify keeping it on the road when I had bought it for so cheap haha. Too much risk with timing chain tensioners, cam solenoids, and the torque converter going out after sinking a bunch of cash into it. I also really wanted a manual car by then. I knew full well what I was getting myself into when I bought it and the next owner did too when I went to sell it. It's difficult to pull an engine and time a W8 when you only have a carport. It wasn't really everything that broke at the end but a lot of small to medium problems that compounded. Please don't be mean, I have a lot of mechanical sympathy and awareness when it make financial sense.
My thought for the new mr2,
use the new Prius hybrid setup, with a gr mr2 being awd.
Since a two seat sports car with regular ICE would just eat sales of the Supra and gr86.
But if they could shave enough weight and give good performance, while being a hybrid sports car, it would fill a much needed gap
Where could we submit questions?
To the point you guys made around the 35 min mark, as I get older I much prefer a "fun to drive" car way more than a "fast car". Over the past 6 years or so I've had a 13 RT Charger, 17 Mustang GT, 19 C7, 20 LT1 Camaro, and now a 22 Giulia Veloce and I will say the Giulia is the "most fun" to drive car, outside the vette, that I have had. Do I miss the sound of a V8? Yes, but the fun to drive experience out ways me missing the sound.
i can't believe Jason is an urus!!!
B5s4 stock turbos not laggy and beast in the snow
What if new Toyota MR is fully electric , with batteries in the middle for that mid- engine feel ⚡⚡?
Great podcast
The Prius is 3000 pounds, the new MR2 needs the ~200hp hybrid Prius prime setup sans CVT in the middle. The engine won’t have tons of character, but a fairly quick hybrid sports car that gets 60mpg might have some market.
I think you missed the mark with the Honda/ Civic question.
A follow up question could be "What other more recent cars offer the kind of experience that 90s VTEC Hondas are capable of delivering?"
The thing is these cars are not going away because where else can you find that combination of small size/weight, good suspension design, and access to incredible engine swaps from the B series and K series engine lines.
As the years go by many of the cars that are left continue to get better and better - with engines upgraded and the absolutely huge aftermarket that still caters to them. There's so many k series engines available to transplant back into the older chassis without taking away do the character that the B series vtecs had.
When everything is electric any car that is capable of revving over 8k will be pretty special just because of the noise it produces.
At 12:00 whoever asked a question about the all-wheel drive car. A 335 extra drive 2011+ is a fairly good option if you can find a E90 or a E60. This is the generation where you got the hydraulic steering and a n55 pneumatically actuated wastegate which are fairly easy to upgrade if you won't, but they are a lot easier to work on and own than the n54 which they recommended, which are going to be a good white elephant gift to bankrupt you! I say this as someone who was the service manager and head tech at separate times at a BMW dealership during the E46 to f30 time.
The N54 is a simpler (and better) engine than the N55. You need to be aware of the things connected to the engine, but not the engine itself. 😅
@@TML34If by better, you mean you can throw more boost at it then yes. If you mean it's easier to work on and has cheaper parts with better updates pieces around the engine for a similar power level while costing you less to own then no.
B58 is king but a N55 E90 costs less to own and has less failures than a N54 for not really much more money.
If you want the power you should just get the 335d
Don't you think the new MR2 will likely have the three cylinder or be electric?
Old video ! But like these.. What is too many miles (I sure depends on car/make) to keep you from buying a used vehicle?
Derek sounds like a Tucker, Jason like 300C SRT8.
Sad Derek is my favorite thing.
Tesla may make a lot of their own stuff these days but earlier the Model S was definitely using some Mercedes W212 E-Class switchgear
How about a show on the 70-80’s affordable mid engine sports car (then and now) Europa, x 1/9, ferro, mr2 etc and why does the mid engine format work in super/hyper cars and not in sports cars
3.2 Carrera curb weight, as I remember was 2750lbs. Google said 2670lbs today. Which makes sense, because that's what the weight savings of the mods Derek described would lighten the car by, about 200lbs, not 400lbs...
Can you please, for the love of Christ, get the wall clocks in synch.
Theoretical MSRP aside (and Toyota could stand to even lose a little bit of money on this as a passion/marketing project for the GR line) I would think a ~3000lb targa topped MR2 with the 300ish HP 3cyl from the GR Corolla could be doable. I guess the problem comes down to platform engineering and compliance certification costs for that. If you could make it $45k or less you'd move some units. Certainly more than the Z4...
I wanna see the auto cut up mode/whiteline mode in a self driving infiniti/bmw 😅
"15 year old GTI is basically free" - and that tells you it's not an Enthusiast car. It's just a FAST hatcback for guys who THINK they're into cars, but eventually "grow up" and buy a boring SUV that offers the most features for the money. Many guys like speed and loud noises when they're 20, and many of them grow out of it as they grow up. That's the GTI is for (there's always outliers, of course). It's the majority of the 0-60 crowd.
On the spare tire thing, lol. "the government should step in"
It's precisely the government stepping in that manufacturers do stuff like eliminate spare tires. You even mentioned it, the engineers are doing everything they can to shave grams. Because government regulations are requiring them to build heavier and heavier vehicles while also mandating ridiculous fuel economy ratings.
Affordable AWD winter w/ good response = manual S5
I have no issue with rev hang with my 23 GR86
Guys, 2 o'clock in the morning dayum. Europoors like me got hoooooooooosed
Ey! I didn't think my question made it. As an espada and 308 GT4 owner yah.....
1:03:18 absolutely killed me jesus christ
You can get a Giulia ti sport awd. If you want a unresponsive 4 banger like the WRX. 🤣
Great in snow.
I use to have one, but I traded it in for a rear driver because I like danger and I’m not a pussy.
52:45 Jason is a 500 abarth
If the stars align, maybe they can put the gr corolla engine in the new mr2 and somehow have it weight sub 3k lbs
Jason: a V12 Lambo, Derek: Alfa or Lancia
The SVT focus is much better than a contour SVT, if you get a chance take one for a rip.
