Just lost my father yesterday from cancer at the age of 85 . In memory of his life I’m going for a drive in his 2003 Toyota Celica which he has owned from new . He was a car enthusiast right till the end . I took him out in it 3 days before he passed and he had the biggest smile on his face. Im happy to say it was one of his final memories . Thank you collecting cars , your podcast is getting me through the most difficult day of my life with a smile and a laugh. Best podcast on RUclips. RIP Kenno.

I dip into the comments when I can and just want to say that I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my father in law two weeks ago. The bloke who dangled his legs off the side of his 48 year old Defender. I am so happy to read that your father and you got to take a ride before he passed. There's some learning there for all of us about joy and life. Sincere condolences, Manish

I know where you’re coming from but the joy of this podcast is the relaxed honest vibe of 5 guys shooting the breeze vs top gear which is forced to be an adrenaline fueled circus. Top gear is a bit like a legendary holiday with mates or the e type jag - it was what it was and trying to recreate it is always going to underwhelm.

The trouble is Top Gear no longer appeals to the likes of us. It would be shuffled to a minor channel. We aren’t the masses we’re niche.

Chris Cooper's 'fast friend' thing has just struck a massive chord with me. A 90-mile quiet evening blast up the A68 behind a stranger's very-well-driven Volvo estate is probably my greatest drive ever. Slow where it mattered, really not slow at all everywhere else. And that waved acknowledgment when we separated.

Concur 100%. Bought a 2003 Boxter S manual in Newcastle Australia 2 years ago and spent 2 days driving home to Melbourne. Had a great tussle with a Golf GTR between Cooma NSW and the coast road. Geez we both enjoyed it and when he eventually turned North and I South, we took a moment to give each other a smile and a salute of mutual respect.

The brief, but brilliant, relationship between two strangers sharing an A road on a long summer evening.
When each of you show respect to both the road and each other, swapping who leads, celebrating your adversaries overtakes, hearing two engines singing their duet, then either the flash of the headlights or the hazards signalling it's come to an end and the wave of thanks and appreciation as they take their turn-off.
      Oh, life's little pleasures.

Episode 24 and everyone a highlight of my week While I enjoy every moment this weeks standouts were Neil Clifford spending £47000 to ensure his Maserati Quattroporte Touring didn't break down and wondering why Porsche didn't make a 993 Turbo Cabriolet and Chris Cooper's former girlfriend Facility. Thank you gentleman for making us laugh, nod in agreement, share your anger and bask in your humility and humanity.

I’m Greek and now live in Athens but studied and worked in the UK in the 90’s. I carry with me and forever will that special Britishness I experienced in my 20’s. I put the wife (so that i didn't have to drive it) in a bright red & tan 159 SW Ti. In rows of dark xc90's it stood out like when the colour in parts in a black & white film.

Loved the two car garage challenge in this episode and here is my take on it since I am currently in that position ;)
1st one needs to be T6 Multivan , the Generation Six one with red or blue bottom and white top and "Disc" 18" wheels. You will never get more cheerful reactions from kids, all the adults will think you have California and you are one of those freelancer types surfing on the beach all day. You will enjoy the practicality and your kids will love the possibility to take all their friends on sleepovers (not sure if you are going to be as thrilled :D ) - done
2nd needs to be GT86/BRZ. Still has 4ish seats, but you need an antidote to the Multivan, that is all about the feel, the lightness and all the petrol dads that knows knows and will envy, that you can still have fun even when being a dad, not just being the chauffeur and will imagine that you have driven every corner with a bit of opposite lock :P
But I do also love the prospect of Golf GTI... - in progress

2 car garage - couldnt agree more with Manish and Chris on this one. The 320i touring but for 20k believe yout refering to the F31 not the G21 as the thumbnail picture suggests. Get a shadow edition which looks amazing! The mk7.5 GTi briliant car! Car that does everything!

We are definitely the most obviously courteous drivers in Europe. I leaned to drive in Belgium, lived over in mainland Europe for most of my life and you soon learn that you have to adapt to their individual set of road manners. In Germany on the autobahns it can actually be very dangerous to use our British driving signals. Example.. driving fast on a derestricted section of the motorway you see someone going slightly slower in the inside lane.. you decide to flash them to let them out to overtake a slower vehicle.. only.. the German thinks you’re flashing them to say I’m coming through…. so they misunderstand what you’re trying to convey to them.. end result.. you’re both doing 60mph and nobody has made a move.. this can be dangerous. Epic podcast!! Absolutely love it!!

Chris you are correct. Some of my best driving experiences here in Australia have been those where another motorist buys into the journey and our two cars travel and help each other along the way as we make our collective progress. A flash of lights or a wave goodbye when our routes finally diverge confirms the joy and appreciation experienced by both drivers.

1:26:57 BAP "Verdamp lang her"????? Could not be more surpised! They are known all of Germany but are heroes in Cologne, singing as Harris said, the local dialect called "Kölsch" (also a light, crisp beer by the same name). Living near The Nürburgring myself Cologne is just around the corner and somehow the "big" city we all somehow love for its character. When Chris Cooper mentioned Rick Astley and Glastonbury I expected his outstanding performance of "There´s A Light That Never Goes Out" from The Smiths. The crowd went crazy.

Re communication and driving like an adult - on average (generalizing here so wrong in the details but right on the whole) in Boston Massachusetts, USA the driver attitude is “No quarter given, None asked.” Probably similar to the Dutch. Here’s an opening fill it NOW or lose it forever, neither ask for nor offer a slow-down, go when the light is green or risk the wrath of the entire crowd, pay attention at all times and behave like a sentient adult. I love that (and miss it loads where I now live in the “land of steady habits” Connecticut). It’s accompanied by the occasional nod of acknowledgement - “Good on ya, keeping the traffic moving smoothly.”

love cooper's comment on the "perverse enjoyment" of making something flow that really shouldn't - my first car was a honda fit which had more body roll than literally any other vehicle i've driven but it meant that even in middle of the city where I live, you could drive through backstreets and chicanes on the absolute limit whilst still remaining inside the law - it was a shit car to drive but there were so many opportunities to floor it that it sort of didn't matter

Brilliant gents, I have been made to feel alone in this for so long, to hear you all speak on the no response to a kind act. I was with a former boss at lunch and held the door and stopped to let a guy in before we all departed the same door. He just walked passed us and didn’t even make eye contact. I about lost my shyt and my boss quipped, “you go from 0-1000 pretty fast don’t you?” I replied “yeah I do, and if you’re gunna be a prick expect to get pricked on occasion.” It’s common courtesy that is dwindling and our job as parents to bring back. Cheers boys.

I don't necessarily agree with a two-car garage needing to have one convertible, but I'll humour you with my choices:
    (Both currently on collecting cars)
    1983 MERCEDES-BENZ (W123) 300 TD
    2013 JAGUAR XK 5.0 V8 CONVERTIBLE

There’s no shortage in controversial automobiles but would love to hear opinions on some of these marmite models:
    - 7 series “bangle butt”
    - Audi TT mk1 with the baseball interior
    - Cybertruck
    - “Eco-boost” V6 in the Ford GT
    - Neil’s hatred of the r32 & r34 Skyline
Love this show, watching from Aus. Goodluck with the little urn

If you live and drive in a country other than you own , the biggest mistake you can make is to play by home rules when away . I have lived and driven a great deal in Turkey where speed limits seem to be advisory , undertaking is common and pushing in is accepted behaviour . You have to go with the flow and do the same things or you are likely to cause an accident by doing the unexpected . Having said that , the preemptive \courtesy 'thank you' is a handy weapon in the armoury . Love your stuff chaps . Thank you .

A Defender? Definitely indestructible and totally iconic, so must be special. However, it's one of the cars that you feel might hurt you when you get inside - not from a crash etc, but simply from sharp edges of bent metal and panels inside the car. Makes me want to be careful what I touch in case I am suddenly bleeding!!

I hadn't seen the hazards as a thankyou thing. I drive an old clapped out ute from time to time and on long journeys I like to slow down or pull over to let people past, got the hazard flash and wondered what it was about, then thought that was nice of them.
At an intersection and someone doesn't indicate early so you could pull out and be on your way but you have to sit there until the last min. I sit there and watch them drive by, they never make eye contact even to the extent that sometimes the passenger will and they do look embarrassed.
The best thing though is when the person that doesn't thank you or messes you about on the road has a plate with their name on, you can really personalise your abuse to them and it makes it so much better.

So many choices... 944/928 Shooting Brake concepts looked amazing, as did the renderings of a modern 928 that I think ended up as the Panamera, then the modern Lamborghini Espada that was rendered in Autocar that never was...

You can legally 'convert' your car to have four passengers in your back seat with Multimac's child seat system. Or three passengers in your originally two-person rear seats. So I believe you can very easily have your GT3 rear seats approved.

Just been in Slovenia, where the drivers are the most courteous we have come across in Europe, even the trucks keep to their lane. Incidentally, for a scenic drive the Vrsic Pass takes some beating and Ljubljana the greenest, most relaxing and romantic city ever. Another exellent podcast, though CH just saying you are angry and not very nice is no excuse, as has been told to many other teenagers. And lady petrol, really? Ditto. Keep up the good work guys.

Here in the US we have this thing called the jeep wave. The company jeep even recognizes this and most jeep owners know about it too. I have never felt such community on the road than when I drove a Gladiator Rubicon.

Totally agree Neil, on the lack of acknowledgment from other drivers 'thing' when you give way/pull into a passing place/mount the bank etc.
Dare I say it, but frequently women don't bother to acknowledge chivalry of this nature.
Here in the shires of Hants, lack of such respect is on the increase....maybe due to so many Townies moving in.
I have noticed though on infrequent trips to the Weald of Kent (around Tunbridge Wells area), everyone acknowledges each other....Tunbridge Wells (my childhood area) is still a bastion of polite society. Something reassuring about that!

In the UK, you politely flash to let someone through. In Israel, you flash to let the other driver know you are coming through
