I own a LR DIscovery 5 which has the same engine (3.0D straight six). Each time I get in the car I'm just astonished at how beautiful the engine is. Utterly smooth, very economical and, for the 2.2ton burden that it lugs about, quite fast. A delight to drive.
Thanks Pete, great summary. Having owned ours now for 5 weeks or so, the Mrs (better half) came in today and just said "I love that Defender" .. magic when we consider how much we just paid for it. One thing you mentioned and I totally get it, when I think of herself and the little lady out and about there is something so reassuring about the Defender that I think you summarised perfectly. We spend most our time on non lined roads with potholes and loads of puddles or flooding right now. Its not off-roading I know but its exactly because of the setup/ build of the vehicle that any roads, even ours in these states, are a joy !! LOVE IT
Great Honest review. I took delivery of one of the first 110 P400 X's in Australia as a replacement for my 5.0 Disco 4. 60,000km later I still love the car. No issues at all and it perfectly suits my lifestyle living in rural Australia 👍🏻
I have owned a 2020 D240 110 First Edition and in March 2023 took delivery of its replacement - a D250 HSE 90 with air springs, ediff Off road pack and tow pack in Pangea Green. The difference between the two engines is chalk and cheese. The 2.0ltr 4 pot was plenty powerful and torquey but the straight 6 3.0ltr is in a different world. Bags of power and very smooth and quiet I have to be very careful on the motorway as it will just leap away at the slightest pressure on the gas pedal. I had a lot of rattles and leaks in my February 2020 build 110, the 90 has only been to the dealers to collect a set of roof cross bars and will be going in next week for a recall on the battery system. It’s used no oil and like you I;very been concerned how little Adblu it’s consumed compared to the amount the 4 cylinder engine drank! It really sips on the Adblu. I ran a TDi 300 90 for 21 years, I much prefer my new 90 - who wouldn’t want heated and cooled seats and a heated steering wheel, front and rear windscreens and aircon that is very effective year round. Dare I mention 35mpg average since March and that includes many many off-road days in low box on Scottish hillsides. My longest trip so far was to Harrogate in May 2023 to the Everything Electric show - on the motorway without the Adventure pack there is a slight wind rustle around the huge wing mirrors but otherwise it’s very quiet and refined. The boot is fine for me as a single person but……….. in my 110 I could stow all my recovery gear under the boot floor permanently, in the 90 that gear has to live in my garage until needed- even finding storage boxes to put kit in was difficult to find and with that in I cannot also have the folding picnic table on the tailgate like I had in my 110, there just isn’t room with the gear boxes in the boot. I do love it though, just hope it lasts as long as my 1996 TDi 300 90 ……………. Oh and my Mini Cooper S E has a bigger boot, seats up, than the 90! Mini 5 supermarket bags for life fit with room to spare - Defender 90 I can get 2 in and they are squeezed at that!
😊"You can get into one of these now for less than £70,000" "They are starting to become a more affordable option".... Crikey, who for? The thought of spending anything like that for a car absolutely shocks me. My 2020 Cooper S (that I have since foolishly sold) was as much as I'd ever pay for a car and I didn't add the Nav pack, comfort pack or any other pack. Now I have the 2023 Cooper SE but it's on lease from Motability. I'd never buy an electric car with my own money. I do love the new Landies but not the 75th anniversary model. I don't mind the green but it's overkill having the wheels in the same colour.
Pre-lockdown, you could get the entry level 90 for £42k - like all manufacturers, Land Rover have essentially used the pandemic as a great price reset and seem to be getting away with it because people just aren’t bothered getting into unaffordable debt
Seriously, its a crying shame that JLR keeps coming bottom or near bottom in reliability polls. What is going on? These cars cost a fortune, way above what a working man can afford and yet they cannot get the quality up there with VW and Honda. Unacceptable.
I have a 90 Hse and love it ! back seats are pain for passengers getting access but overall it feels safe, handles all weather and is so nice to drive, I get 30mpg and a 550 mid range. heated seats and steering wheel isa boom. manoverability in tight spaces with the cameras no problem, comfortable with meridian sound system and no mechanical issues. My ideal vehicle!
I bought the same 75th anniversary , but I have the 110. I don’t have any of the roof rack or side accessories and I love it. The colour gets loads of attention and most people love it. I did however get the dealer to powder coat the wheels black before I picked it up. The car is outstanding and I love driving it. The comment you made about you’re glad when Tracey is driving it, as you feel the car is looking after her and keeping her safe. I have exactly the same feeling when my wife is driving it. In fact I always ensure she’s driving it when she’s on a longer journey. Keep up the content, I love it.
Hi Pete - the MY2024 90 has a new manual system on the front passenger seat that makes using the rear seats much more practical - making good use of it on ours. Decided against the adventure pack as we like the clean looks and quieter drive.
Definitely those silver pads in the car need to be replaced with black colour. The Defender letters up front es well changed to black with back will cover and lunch box.
I have a D300 110 SE on order due to arrive in Brisbane in April 2024. Great balanced review. It's fair to say the drivetrain in the D300 with the straight 6 diesel engine matched to ZF gearbox has been bulletproof. The question will be electronics over time. In Australia, Land rovers come with a 5-year unlimited bumper to bumper warranty, enough to convince me to sell the 300 Series Landcruiser after 12 months of ownership.
good luck! I have a XFS 2010 with the old 3.0 TDV6 which has excellent economy but I hear so many stories about the Ingenium so curious how you go long term.
Final thoughts🤔 Have you missed your Specsavers appointment? The appendages on the side look a mess and most people who see them are probably P1 ssing themselves with laughter that some fool drives around with that. Extremely over priced Sardine can, rear access is a joke, boot space ridiculous. You must use micro flight cases not suit cases. Poor little dogs being shut in there😢 Any car should be reliable for 6 months to a year! But you can probably expect a load of expense and problems if you plan for a long term of ownership.
I think the problem we have with Landrover in Oz is our dealer network. They do not support the owner. They fight every claim. I am a bit concerned about your comments of driving through flooded roads though. OK here in Oz we do get some very fast rising and flowing streams as we can end up with 50 - 100mm of rain in an hour. That is a lot of water that has to move quickly. Almost every storm we see a drowning as drivers attempt to cross flooded roads. Great video Peter, full of information.
Great review. I’ve always thought the 90 is the prettier car, but I bought the 110 as the 90 wasn’t out at that time and for me I would still opt for the 110 as I need the space so often. When I got my 110 the new defender was fresh on the market and I fell in love with mine as soon as I saw it in the showroom (blue with black alloys etc..). They were in demand so had to make a quick decision and traded in my D5. The only downside was it has the D200 engine which I had some initial reservations about, but after 3 years it’s been brilliant, including when towing. In recent years I’ve owned the Freelander 2, D3, D4, D5 and Evoque (all reliable btw) and this Defender is far and away my favourite Land Rover I’ve ever owned. The only issue was the noise from the A-pillar covers (I think that was a design flaw on earlier models) but once fixed it never reoccurred. I put off road tyres onto mine and personally I feel it makes the car look ‘complete’.
8:28 - I timed it and you're correct. I takes exactly quite a long time. One of my pet peeves on most things with two doors and electric seats. It seems like having a simple release would be fairly easy to implement but almost none have it.
Great review Ped; bought a D300 X-Dyamic 110 HSE largely influenced by your 110 review a year ago; had come out of a Range Rover HSE ( bought from new, 66k miles, 67 plate) which I'd replaced with a Audi Q7 Vorsprug and after 1 month and a trip to the French Alps realised I'd made a huge mistake. I've been in Range Rovers/Sports for 25 years and didn't realise that for me nothing else comes close. Amazing how familiarity becomes so important. Wasn't sure about the Defender initially and LR dealers are a nightmare to deal with (one that will remain nameless were spectacularly unhelpful - they really couldn't care less about selling me a car) but anything else from LR was literally impossible for me to insure in London so after your review ordered the Defender literally the next day. Took delivery in June and - wow - I absolutely love it. What a fantastic car. It has exceeded every expectation. 7 months and 10k miles in, with everything European weather can throw at it - from 40 degree heat In France in the summer, Yorkshire floods last month and snow and ice in the Alps last week - to say nothing of the potholes in Surrey! It eats motorways as effortlessly as the Range Rover - we did an 11 hour drive back at the weekend in great comfort! Only issues I've had are a cracked windscreen (from motorway gravel..) and someone trying (and failing) to steal it by taking an angle grinder to a rear door - added bonus, LR finally seem to have done something about their security, well overdue. Mine's the diesel mild hybrid and I'm delighted with the consumption - will get almost 600 miles on a run out of it which is better than my previous RR and far better than the Petrol Q7 which was frankly quite a shock when I saw how thirsty it was. Truly brilliant car - puts a smile on my face everytime I get in it and surprisingly easy to manoeuvre in and around town (just keep an eye on the width restrictions on the traffic calming measures and ignore Waze's directions!!!). Love your reviews Ped, keep them coming!
The Adblue comment was so interesting! We bought an E pace 240D and we're so surprised how little Adblue it demands! I bought 20 litres, thinking that it would gulp it down but no! 4000 Kms later, I've only managed to get 4.5 litres into the tank! And.... On a run... 5.4 liters per 100 kms snd around the city 7.3, despite subzero temperatures all day! My experience over yhe last 30 years of JLR products is that if you look after them, they'll look after uou! Noore costly or unreliable than any other marques but with distinct advantages. So many Land Rovers here in Belarus! You'd be surprised! Nearly as many as in Shropshire, my home, previously for 26 years. 😊
I have driven three different 110's as we nearly bought one on two separate occasions but didn't for a number of reasons, like you I am a fan of the shape of the 90 but I too would probably have bought the 110 for practicality and certainly wanted the adventure pack and snorkel. I passed again through the Balmoral Estate the other day and that spec and colour sits proudly outside one of the keepers houses and certainly looks the part even if it is not quite to my taste. It would still be one of my first purchases on a large lottery win car shopping list if not the first.
This depends in which country you live in . In Oz the depreciation on LR products is more than Jap and Kraut . RRS were selling well 10-15 years back , but it's GLE and X5 nowadays here .
Still think it’s a great looking car but I would do without that side box and just have a ladder on both sides if I was to have the roof rack. Glad to hear you had no issues with the car, personally I think that’s another advantage of that straight six engine, it’s a good well sorted engine which is perfect for this type of car.
Pete, we have had our 22MY 110 D250 X-Dynamic HSE from new for 2½ years now, it’s done 32,000 miles and it has been the best car we have ever owned! What I struggle to comprehend is how such a capable off road vehicle can drive so well on road, I have owned 5 Range Rovers and have no desire to have another as the Defender does everything so well and looks so much cooler. I completely understand your POV regarding Tracey driving on her own and eventually I am sure you will have one as your family daily driver. Your update was spot on but I knew that before watching😂
I am in love with this car - but i have a wolfhound (she uses a ramp to get into my SUV atm). Do you think i can make that work? and have you tried it with a bicycle rack?
Just to let you know, the new 90 defenders all come with a manual ‘parachute’ mechanism passenger seat that is a much faster mechanism with a quick tug and they have added storage in boot to bring boot’s floor level up to meet rear seats when seats are down. We have one coming soon! So very excited!🎉
Bought a 23 110 HSE D300 x-dynamic based on your first review. Have the same kit and agree with most of your comments. It’s a fantastic car. One negative I would add is dashboard reflection in drivers mirror at night is annoying. We did not buy the 75th edition as dealer was struggling selling them and offering mega deals and even with the price crash, we have not lost much as all on our grey car. Not had a single problem but JLR cut back on sound proofing in 23 model year plus a few other bits that we have retro fitted. Down to your review we bought it and sold our 22 Macan GTS and would not sell it so thankyou.
@@billybob1511 During production. They cut many standard features on 23MY such as soft close rear door, locking petrol flap, rear fuse box lid, sunglasses holder, many of the USB sockets and as we retrofitted the missing items, sound deadening was missing from door and some rear panels. Just ordered some on eBay at fitted myself. Even some of the wiring loom wrapping has reverted to black tape from Tessa tape.
Shame Land Rover haven’t got a handle on how easy they get stolen. Now they have a reputation. Love the chunky looks of these. I imagine the depreciation is heavy on it.
There’s no issue with the new Defender (or any model after 2018). As for depreciation. Independent dealers are still offering to buy them off owners, so depreciation is no issue
Great review, had my 2022 Defender D250 90 HSE X-Dynamic for 3 months and absolutely love it. All terrain and I think quieter than the D4 I replaced it with. No issues, love the engine and power and like you said, the confidence And security it gives you. Drove the 130 for a weekend. Chalk and cheese with the 90. 130 was Slow and lumbering but not too bad for such a large car.
I have the same model and love it, great engine. Also disliked the stop start at first until I reallised you could turn off "Auto Hold" which means it now works flawlessly,
I have a 110 X300 Dynamic commercial and absolutely love it. I feel its more planted and nicer to drive than the vogue which is all wallowing. No matter the weather or road conditions, its fantastic. Sorry to mention this, but not really bothered about driving the Ferrari when I have the defender
I have the 24MY 90 and all the problems you share have been fixed. Rear access is now manual on the driver’s side. Rear fold seats are now completely fold flat.
Very balanced review. I’d argue the average Defender buyer isn’t going to be washing it themselves. I’d also suggest the average buyer has access to other ‘more practical’ vehicles when needed. Ridiculous really that such a large vehicle can be so impractical, but it’s a fashion accessory for the most part.
I’ve got a VW T6 204 DSG 4 Motion ( bought as a window van/kombi). It’s got way more space, is quick, comfortable and also gives us a great feeling of robustness and safety. It also returns 35 mpg in general driving and up to 40mpg on a tour. Honestly, it’s the best vehicle we’ve had. Unless you do a lot of off road stuff I just can’t see the point in the Defender and its ilk. The 90 is nearly twice the price of the T6 we have.
Agree with you totally and we love our D250 XS as well. It handles everything effortlessly from short trips into the local villages to trips down to the south of France. We’ve not got the ladder and roof box and run on the continental road tires and have found it extremely quiet at motorway speeds but as you say road noise is something that you expect with any roof rack. Likewise we’ve now driven just under 20k and have had no issues whatsoever mechanically and have never needed to top up the adblue. Terrific cars 😀
Hi Pete, I have a X Dynamic HSE 90 D250 which we absolutely love. I have had it 6 weeks and done 1000 miles and it is averaging 33mpg with mainly short journeys. The MY24 has a manual front passenger seat which makes access to the rear much quicker. Also the stop start has a "Auto Hold" function which if you switch off makes the Auto stop start work a lot smoother. The engine is superb!
I actually own a 75th I’ve actually had one problem with mine which was a coolant leak which has been rectified by Land Rover under warranty which I’ve owned from new a 23 plate it needed a new coolant tank and thermostat housing only problem it took 7 weeks to get back because of parts issues basically trying to get them but was fine as I had a courtesy car the whole time But I have to say it is the best car I’ve ever owned it’s so comfortable and long distance it’s a pleasure to drive
I've never seen the point of motorised seats. An old fashioned tilt & slide seat mechanism from the 70s would solve the back seat waiting time (but not the awkwardness of getting in and out)
Until there’s another driver involved. My wife rarely drives my vehicle, but when she does it’s really handy to push a button & the seat & mirrors are back where I want them before I’ve even got my seat belt on.
I've had my 110 D240 First Edition just over 3 years and it's the best car I've ever owned. I also own a green Defender 90 TD5 and regardless of what a lot of people say it is the natural successor. You can feel the Defender DNA in the car. My big question is what make are your trainers ? I really like those !😀
Been thinking about this recently, because the roads around here are pretty crap too. Something which can plough through whatever floods or awful pot holes appear is starting to appeal. The idea of the wife and daughter being able to get home no matter what is crucial.
Have a 110 D300 XD HSE, which is my good lady's car. Living out in the sticks, with filthy farm roads, collapsed verges, potholes and frequent flooding, I completely agree that her having the Defender, as her daily commute, is extremely reassuring, although you still need to drive to the conditions and be wary of others of course and, just because it feels like a tank, which could deal with an apocolyspse, doesn't mean it is one. Before purchasing, we had a demo with the Adventure Pack but didn't like the compromised rear visibility, when using the side mirrors. Side steps are a must though IMHO. Internally, it's a really comfortable place to be, without being OTT and the high up driving position is epic. With regards the size of the thing, she's got used to it very quickly and, for such a big car, it's surprisingly manoeuvrable, with impressively sharp steering. She has no problem parking up and it quickly became second nature, especially with the various, onboard 3D cameras providing excellent assistance. The ability to lower the suspension and lock it, when entering a tight multi-story has meant nothing has beaten us yet but, with that roof rack, I'd say there's next to no chance. The D300 engine is 'a peach' and eats up the miles when the journey requires it, although we tried the D250 and there's an awful lot to like about that as well, even if it is down on power by a few horses. Plus you can save a good few quid by choosing it. Almost a year in and we've had zero issues apart from a couple of manufacturer recalls and whilst there are a few design choice and functionality annoyances, we're really happy and can see us keeping the car for many, many years, because it ticks every one of our boxes. I've been looking at a 90 in a similar spec to replace my X5 but the lack of boot space for the dog, (medium size), plus the finicky rear seat access, has put me off, especially, as I'm often chucking stuff across the back seats. (Not kids or passengers!) So another 110 might be on the cards although I'm tempted to 'hold fire' for a bit to see what the new Land Cruiser has to offer, when it finally arrives in the UK later this year.
Spot on about the pot holes, I've been considering switching to a high end Discovery Sport (can't afford a Defender) then trade the wheels down a size with someone. One London pothole cost me 2k in tyres and alloys on my XJR from a particularly ugly one. Limped home 70 miles on a space saver and a buckled rear.
Disco Sport on 19 inch wheels rides really well. Avoid PHEV as it’s not quite ready and 1.5 litre engine is too small. D180/200 are best option if you can find one. They haven’t built many of them on facelifted models.
@@Discovery_Dad I was looking at a P250 as the DPF will be an issue for me. Agree on PHEV I went to a forum and .... those have a lot of problems. Affecting anything using the new PHEV tech, one guy had the same part replaced 4 times so far.
We've have a Defender 90 X for about 2.5 years now, been a great car so far. My biggest issue is the amount of wind noise from the roof rack. At highway speeds with the canvas roof it's kinda unbearable… so we've removed the rack until we need it. Otherwise, love our 90!
I bought a new 2022 110 5.0 v8 it's been perfect,I've also just orded a 2024 Defender 130 5.0 v8 which I'm taking the back seats out and having it made in to a long range off road camper
I saw a 110 Defender parked at the side of the road ,the family were admiring the country side , they were still there two hours later -On the Hard Shoulder of the M3 waiting for a recovery truck .BUT , Seen less of knackered Defenders this last year ,so the Company in Slovakia must be getting better at building them - Juries still out
If anyone fills the AdBlue, be very careful not to overfill it, there’s been loads of issues with it effecting the cars DPF sensor/electronics. Not all Land Rovers have this issue, but a fair few do! Love my Velar D300.
Great content and delivery. Best version in my book is 110 X Dynamic HSE P400E, but I am biased as had that for 6 months with no issues - so far so good 😉
Hi.......I am now on my second LR 90, but both have/is the Hardtop 250 (van) version. I absolutely love them...brilliant around the farm and ok at towing heavy loads. Engine is sweet as a nut and quick. Aroud town 29mpg but out on a run 33mpg. Hates....woeful headlights now vastly improved by Lazer 750r spotlights which come specifically for a Defender. Seats comfy but lack of support under thigh! Stereo sound ok but gettng it upgraded next (sound proofing doors) and finally last, but the worse....pathetic reversing lights! With the price of new pick ups £45k plus, I think this is a great car (van)
I only looked at it in th showroom but I agree with your point on accessing the seats in the back. Just throwing sth. on the back seats with these electric motors is just crazy. If there would be a manual option to move to seat forward and backward to access the back seats would be a major improvement.
Its a good point. Our drivers seat is electric but the passenger seat is manual. You lift the catch and simply push forward. Lot quicker than the drivers side
Hello again Pete, would have bet quids that you would miss the two extra doors. I had an early model Toyota Forerunner (from new), which also had two doors. With a child and car seats etc access was challenging but, I think , better than the Defender 90. A very basic vehicle super reliable over the 10 years and about 400,000 km of use. Your long "termer" time isn't long enough to prove costs of the experience in my books. The noise factor of the external accessories would be a factor for our choice as high speed travelling to any where from the location with the Forerunner, about 300 miles from the nearest capital city (Adelaide, South Australia) and the local interesting places were on dirt roads/tracks. Cheers and thanks again for the review, all good.
Great and honest review. Thank you. Also tested the 90 300 petrol version and had the same issues with rear seat access. Front seats moving forward at glacial pace and tiny gap to hoist yourself into the rear seats. That gets old very quickly when you’re occasionally traveling with smaller passengers. Also, boot space very compromised by the alloy rail that sits behind the rear seats and cannot be moved. Completely impractical and with seats folded forward it does not provide an even surface that’s good for loading anything, bike etc. And good luck putting the rear seat belts back in place when you want to put the rear backrest back up. Someone was not thinking when this was engineered… Also felt the wind noises at motorway speeds were a little too pronounced, even with no exterior trim. If you have a non air suspension version the car sits slightly higher than the air sprung one. Ride quality aside, that makes getting in and out even at 6’4 quite the challenge without the side sills. Great looking car but as a daily driver oddly impractical. The large exterior does not translate into a versatile interior for the short wheelbase, even for someone without kids or pets.
I looked at the new Defender as a family car just under two years ago (I'm one of the few original Defender owners that doesn't hate the new version I think), but I wanted a hybrid and the price was too high, plus they wouldn't even give me a delivery date... Got a Suzuki Across plug-in instead which a fantastic car, but when I change it I may take another look at the Defender range.
It’s a cracking looking car but I would go 110. For a car that size I’d want the space and practicality. They had a grey 110 at goodwill on display that was fantastic.
Really interesting video. I can't help but feel the 90 only works as a commercial truck, with no back seats. PS it is my understanding that dogs in cars either need to be strapped in or enclosed so they can't, in the event of an accident, become loose objects. A dog cage would hardly fit in the 90 boot. My father had an early commercial Freelander and 3 labs. It worked very well for what it was bought for. I feel this would do the same role, only in more comfort. I am also a biased defender 130 owner, albeit a 2008.
Great review - I’ve got Schnausers too. Ive also had the First Edition 90 also good spec but like you, long term, not having two extra doors became a pain along with the smaller boot. So now have a 110 HSE (cancelled order so got it within a week) and absolutely love it for all the reasons you’ve flagged. Actually before buying the Defenders I had a V8 Range Rover Autobiography on a 69 plate but I prefer the 110 over that - the D300 engine is amazing and sounds really good. Makes me smile every time I get behind the wheel. In a similar but more expensive way my only breakdown was a badly punctured tyre on a fast dual carriageway but quickly changed by the Land Rover Emergency Assistance service. A big fan of the ‘over the air’ software updates too and a recent home visit by LR Assistance to add other software to add another level of theft security as a recall. Keep the videos coming, great job, Thanks
As things are at the moment, I'd have a 110 over the 90, need the 5 doors That seat takes AGES to move forward! Glad its been reliable, takes decades to shake off that reputation! Overall, for me, its too big, but if I was going for a Land Rover, I'd have a Defender (Need to win the lottery first!) Looking forward to the next long termer!
Hi PP, I’m due to order my 90 HSE later this year for a December delivery. It’s great you have you tubed your 6 months experience. Nothing puts me off & I certainly accept the 3 Door inconvenience however, one thing you’ve never mentioned I believe, is the seats! They look so basic & bench like, are they comfortable & supportive? I know not in the way of Sports SUVs I’ve always had. Love your comments on the seats please.
It’s me again. I order a hard tip which is like a van. Our family is my wife and me plus the dog. So the dog sits in the jump seat. The cargo is much easier to loan plus vat benefits.
I'd keep it just for that colour! If it were an EV, then I'd keep it forever. Petrol Pups seem to like riding in it, so please ENJOY it for as long as all of you can!👍
@@patterdale4332 You're right. I'd be better off with a classic Land Rover (in this colour, though🤣🤣) done up by Petrol Ped's mate, Richard Morgan, at his Electric Classic Cars shop in Wales. He uses Tesla Motors and batteries which last into the hundreds of thousands of miles. A classic L-R EV would feel more endearing to me than these modern vehicles with their loony screens, daft control interfaces, and infotainment out the wazoo...
Yep I’ve ordered one and it’s the diesel version should get it in the summer unlike the Porsche targa which I have been waiting two years for which is ridiculous so I have cancelled the order and buy a second hand nearly new one
I agree about your comment that it’s the perfect car for the UK’s crumbling roads. However, your London car park issue just highlights it’s not really suitable as an everyday car unless you have another (smaller) car for driving into the city. It’s also too compromised for the price (a faff to get in the back, tiny boot, wind noise, 26 mpg) and as others have pointed out, JLR have a terrible reliability reputation and poor dealer service (I know from experience). I can only justify owning one car so I’ll stick with my BMW 5 Series Touring.
@ Thanks for the reply I wasn’t sure you would have seen it on an older video. Love your stuff keep up the good work! I love it although the wife wasn’t keen on the green. So they wrapped it in an amazing grey.
Only 70,000 used? Lovely car but it's only for a few at those prices and more new, all I'm saying is spare a thought for the majority of us when you talk of vehicles at that price. I'm privileged to drive a skoda scala sel 110 dsg, cost 19000 a 9 months old and averages over 50mpg, but I'm a dreamer.
For me, I would desaturate the colour a bit and have it fitted with cream coloured steelies, roof bars for my ladders but no accessories. But is not a big deal, as shown would be close enough to perfect for me car
Sidesteps a must ? For road use nice. When offroading, and you're stuck in mud or sand, you can't reach with your shovel under the car. Also it is difficult to get a jack under the car. I would skip them. 😉
The only gripe i have with this vehicle, is that it's a 3-door...I still can't get how much of an "inconvenience" 5-door variants are for people to chose 3-door versions. The only 3-door application I'd consider are sports/super cars...anything else, it's only a matter of time & circumstance, that you will wish you should have gone for the 5-door.
Answer: not a 90, but rather a 130 D300...we drove the D300 for 1 months, with much anticipation......we had no problems...we have also a Discovery 5 SD, still (V6),not yet Ingenium, quite satisfied....had in the last 4 years some electronics problems, and others, but, the D5 is driven by half a dozen people, everything, mountain, German highways, overland in CH and I, annual drive: ca 50 Tkm, oil changes every 12 Tkm ! Transmission flushes all 100 Tkm. Currently, however , is our Toyota LC 200 TD 4.5 V , 2015, with LED....this is our true love, and for really long distances, e. g. from North Germany to Greece, we take always the Toyota, or both cars together. If we can ger the Toyota LC 300 3.3 D, which we drove in AUS, this is the car, no quesdtions. But Toyota does not want to import it to Europe, so we would have to do that ourselves, at costs ca 25,000 CHF.........madness, but is could be worth it.
I love the idea of Def90, but it would be my second or even third car. And for sure if I would EVER consider the use of rear seats I would stay with a manual set and release. But at the same time if I need a two-seater for my office trip I would select any roadster instead. unless ofc I live in a flood area, or I need any offroad capabilities - then it's 90. Till then 130 is my favourite version to complete the small city EV setup.
Enjoyed the review. On the stop start, when in traffic you can disable the hold function, it's this that requires the harder press of the pedal to get going which is a bit annoying when manoeuvring. However in general on the D5, same engine, I find engine restart quite quick. I do think you should try a D5 while the 90 is fresh in your mind, as it addresses most of your shortcomings. It's also more practical with bike rack or other tow bar mounted accessories, and dogs in the boot. You can have both dogs and luggage in there easily. Offer of a drive still there... 👍
I really enjoyed my Defender P300 although that vehicle needs the diesel torque. As PP implies, it felt safe and unstoppable. Nothing failed in 18 months. Air suspension excellent. I knew it was a Big Boy and no racing car. My only moans were a) headlights which were just adequate but not a patch on my RangeRover and b) poor reversing lights, too small and not bright enough to get a camera image in the pitch-black. Maybe this has been upgraded. Greatest enjoyment was being accosted by old Defender owners (usually portly with grey goatees) moaning that the rear lights would fill with mud and not fit for purpose. Wonderful.
So happy to see this video Sir Pete! My wife and I are looking at replacing are Ford Explorer with either a high trim Ford Expedition or waiting a couple years and buy a used long wheel base one of them defenders as the family transport and adventure rig. Aka my wife would drive it most lol. So hopefully prices here in the USA 🇺🇸 follow suit to the uk 🇬🇧 and drop a bit into a more affordable range for one! Great review and a awesome looking suv. My wife says if we get a defender 110 that your review will have a huge part in that decision
Great review; I think the Grenadier looks better, though. However, not sure why the stop-start needs a prod on the accelerator to restart? My MB S212 restarts as soon as I release the brake pedal.
You’ll have no bother buying a Grenadier. The dealers can’t shift the demonstrators. Last time I looked there were about 70 on Auto Trader. Not a good sign. 😬
@@hughmarcus1 There were 98 the last time I looked, mid December. Almost all with between delivery mileage and 3000 miles. This being not much more than six months after customer deliveries started in earnest.
Pete. I hear what you say about the roof rack, ladder , somewhere to store your satchel and the side steps but hell no. Obviously keeping the side steps clean is easy as with any other SUV that thinks it's in the good old USA, your snazzy slacks will rub any dirt off when you get out. Of course only in the spot where the aforementioned snazzy slacks rub but you know. LOL.
I have had one 1200 Meters up a Scottish hillside in the snow and it didn't slip a wheel once. No issues at all, it is more capable than most people will ever need.
I was considering a 90 but now looking only for a 110. In the US you can get a fully or should I say nicely equipped 110 S 4cyl. for $63-65,000. The reason I decided against a 90 are 2 very irritating design flaws that shouldn't exist, that aren't an issue with a Jeep Wrangler. One is that PRIOR to 2024, 2023 and earlier the back seat won't fold flat like it does in every single vehicle on the market from the cheapest Toyota's to even a basic Kia. For 24 the seat does flip and fold now like it should. In addition, unlike my Jeep Wrangler, the Defender with its one big back door doesn't have a window that goes down or lifts up. So if you need to put something such as a long piece of lumber like a 2/4/10 in the vehicle, and have it hang out the back, that isn't possible with a 90. You'd end up with all your lumbar on the road. 2 stupid design flaws that make a short wheelbase model even less useable for no reason. Additionally my 3 previous LR's each broke down numerous times and were maddeningly unreliable. From what people have told me who own Defenders, they say they are very reliable and love them. I also must add I LOVE the green with green wheels. I also like the roof rack and ladder, just not the box on the side. Seems like an odd add on. Thumbs up and subscribed thanks. PS. I love your Schnauzer's. I had one as a kid and always think about him.
Pedro, I am on my second Discovery Sport, absolutely love them (the first one was an SE Tech, the second one is an HSE), never had any issues with either car and both are 2-litre diesel manuals. Been is some dodgy places in the southwest and an still here. Why are there so many vids about how unreliable they are?
I own a LR DIscovery 5 which has the same engine (3.0D straight six). Each time I get in the car I'm just astonished at how beautiful the engine is. Utterly smooth, very economical and, for the 2.2ton burden that it lugs about, quite fast. A delight to drive.
Yep 👍
While it works lol

Today’s diesel is clean, I tow a two tonne caravan and it still spins the wheels up with the POWER!!
LOVE IT
Great to hear 👍
Great Honest review. I took delivery of one of the first 110 P400 X's in Australia as a replacement for my 5.0 Disco 4. 60,000km later I still love the car. No issues at all and it perfectly suits my lifestyle living in rural Australia 👍🏻
Nice 👍
I'd have the 110 D300 without any exterior accessory packs. It covers more bases than most cars.
I have a 2023 P400 90 x-dynamic. After 11000 miles it’s been tremendous. No issues.
Thanks for this 👍
😊"You can get into one of these now for less than £70,000"
"They are starting to become a more affordable option"....
+1.. That's a Ditto on the "same coloured wheels".. Straight up silver alloys is my taste..
70,000 - I remember looking to buy a 110 for 20k new 😮
Try speccing up a Grenadier & you’ll end up at £70k quite quickly. I know which one I’d buy.
The wheels are a defining characteristic. They look odd but they are unique to the model hence why it is special.
VW has a myth of reliability
@@martintaylor8034may well be the case but what about JLR
Not sure about that. I've got a Range Rover, no more problems than Audi's or VWs I've had.
I’ve certainly had no problems with my 90 and I love it
@@onechopbuddy3849 same here
I have a 90 Hse and love it ! back seats are pain for passengers getting access but overall it feels safe, handles all weather and is so nice to drive, I get 30mpg and a 550 mid range. heated seats and steering wheel isa boom. manoverability in tight spaces with the cameras no problem, comfortable with meridian sound system and no mechanical issues. My ideal vehicle!
Thanks for sharing!
👍
Nice on the wheels!! I cannot look at the white ones.
In Australia, Land rovers come with a 5-year unlimited bumper to bumper warranty, enough to convince me to sell the 300 Series Landcruiser after 12 months of ownership.
.....lets revisit this in a decade.
Poor little dogs being shut in there😢
Any car should be reliable for 6 months to a year! But you can probably expect a load of expense and problems if you plan for a long term of ownership.
You’re not a fan then 😂
Couldn't agree more!
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Great review.
Wow this is great to hear and I’m so glad you love it 👍
The Adblue comment was so interesting!
Cool 😎
Once you consider the residuals and the relatively low depreciation, then the costs make a lot of sense.
This depends in which country you live in . In Oz the depreciation on LR products is more than Jap and Kraut . RRS were selling well 10-15 years back , but it's GLE and X5 nowadays here .
You're obviously not tracking Land Rover residuals recently then.
Low depreciation? Uh, no.
Land Rover residuals and low depreciation? Which planet are you on, mate?
The residuals are only good when you buy something 3 yrs old to begin with.
Still think it’s a great looking car but I would do without that side box and just have a ladder on both sides if I was to have the roof rack. Glad to hear you had no issues with the car, personally I think that’s another advantage of that straight six engine, it’s a good well sorted engine which is perfect for this type of car.
The side box will get broken into regular
Pete, we have had our 22MY 110 D250 X-Dynamic HSE from new for 2½ years now, it’s done 32,000 miles and it has been the best car we have ever owned! What I struggle to comprehend is how such a capable off road vehicle can drive so well on road, I have owned 5 Range Rovers and have no desire to have another as the Defender does everything so well and looks so much cooler. I completely understand your POV regarding Tracey driving on her own and eventually I am sure you will have one as your family daily driver. Your update was spot on but I knew that before watching😂
Ah thanks Andy 👍
I am in love with this car - but i have a wolfhound (she uses a ramp to get into my SUV atm). Do you think i can make that work?
and have you tried it with a bicycle rack?
Not sure the 90 boot would be big enough. I think you’d need a 110 with a dog that big 😬
Good to know 👍
Me too!
Had a used D200 90 for 6 months, loved it so much so i got myself a brand new Tasman blue D300 90 that i plan to keep forever.
I think that car would look much better with the steel wheels - either white or colour-coded.
They’re a gorgeous looking machine!
Great to hear 👍
23 MY they cut the sound proofing? Is that from the dealer/Land Rover or based on your experience?
Thanks for sharing
I have the same model and love it, great engine. Also disliked the stop start at first until I reallised you could turn off "Auto Hold" which means it now works flawlessly,
I've just orded the 130 5.0 v8 they are quick not drive the others
Just ordered the same as yours. How’s the fuel consumption on the 250?
34mpg on average
I have a 110 X300 Dynamic commercial and absolutely love it. I feel its more planted and nicer to drive than the vogue which is all wallowing. No matter the weather or road conditions, its fantastic. Sorry to mention this, but not really bothered about driving the Ferrari when I have the defender
Thanks 👍Great review update. My D300 90 arrived at the dealer today and I pick it up on Wednesday. Can’t wait. Cheers
Hope you enjoy it!
Enjoy, we have ours about 5 weeks now (D250). Loving the 90 !
I have the 24MY 90 and all the problems you share have been fixed. Rear access is now manual on the driver’s side. Rear fold seats are now completely fold flat.
Nice to know 👍
Very balanced review.
What’s the point of the external rear box, other than to create a lot of wind noise and negative fuel consumption 🤔
If you have the PHEV it’s great for charge cables. If you off-road you would keep strops in there. More useful than you think 👍
Great to hear 👍
Great to hear 👍
My wife loves them and i feel the same about her being safe when she is out in her volvo
I actually own a 75th I’ve actually had one problem with mine which was a coolant leak which has been rectified by Land Rover under warranty which I’ve owned from new a 23 plate it needed a new coolant tank and thermostat housing only problem it took 7 weeks to get back because of parts issues basically trying to get them but was fine as I had a courtesy car the whole time
But I have to say it is the best car I’ve ever owned it’s so comfortable and long distance it’s a pleasure to drive
The 24my has memory driver seat, but with non memory passenger seat with manual slide. Also introduced folding row 2 cushion for flat floor.
Definitely wish they has four doors on the 90. The anniversary edition colour look amazing on this gorgeous car. The pups are so cute.
Thanks 🙏🏻
I've had my 110 D240 First Edition just over 3 years and it's the best car I've ever owned. I also own a green Defender 90 TD5 and regardless of what a lot of people say it is the natural successor. You can feel the Defender DNA in the car. My big question is what make are your trainers ? I really like those !😀
Ah well spotted. They are from Salomon 👍 Gortex trail shoes 👍
Been thinking about this recently, because the roads around here are pretty crap too. Something which can plough through whatever floods or awful pot holes appear is starting to appeal. The idea of the wife and daughter being able to get home no matter what is crucial.
Yep 👍
Thanks for this 👍
Really don't see the point of the box on the side. Can you get 2 ladders? Still like the 90 over the 110, just wish the rears folded flat.
I have seen one good use for the box - a defibrillator! It was being driven through Cirencester.
Ouch 😣
@@Discovery_Dad I was looking at a P250 as the DPF will be an issue for me. Agree on PHEV I went to a forum and .... those have a lot of problems. Affecting anything using the new PHEV tech, one guy had the same part replaced 4 times so far.
We've have a Defender 90 X for about 2.5 years now, been a great car so far. My biggest issue is the amount of wind noise from the roof rack. At highway speeds with the canvas roof it's kinda unbearable… so we've removed the rack until we need it. Otherwise, love our 90!
I can imagine 👍
I bought a new 2022 110 5.0 v8 it's been perfect,I've also just orded a 2024 Defender 130 5.0 v8 which I'm taking the back seats out and having it made in to a long range off road camper
Cool 😎
I saw a 110 Defender parked at the side of the road ,the family were admiring the country side , they were still there two hours later -On the Hard Shoulder of the M3 waiting for a recovery truck .BUT , Seen less of knackered Defenders this last year ,so the Company in Slovakia must be getting better at building them - Juries still out
I think Pete 'absolutely adores' it
Yep 👍
If anyone fills the AdBlue, be very careful not to overfill it, there’s been loads of issues with it effecting the cars DPF sensor/electronics.
Not all Land Rovers have this issue, but a fair few do!
Love my Velar D300.
Great content and delivery. Best version in my book is 110 X Dynamic HSE P400E, but I am biased as had that for 6 months with no issues - so far so good 😉
Nice 👌
I have the 110 i love it
👍
Thanks, good job as always and you touched on all my concerns including @14:00.
Glad to help!
I hear the wading depth is not as good as the current full size Discovery though?
Same - 90cm.
Such a good review! Good luck!!!
Thank you! You too!
Thanks for this 👍
My dream spec. Our local dealer still has one and I really want it.
Nice summary Pete, I personally love this colour and the matching alloys…..cheers fella!
👍
When they are on the rear seats they are strapped in 👍
Great review - I’ve got Schnausers too.
Great to hear 👍
As things are at the moment, I'd have a 110 over the 90, need the 5 doors
That seat takes AGES to move forward!
Glad its been reliable, takes decades to shake off that reputation!
Overall, for me, its too big, but if I was going for a Land Rover, I'd have a Defender
(Need to win the lottery first!)
Looking forward to the next long termer!
Seats are super comfortable. Front and rear 👍
Great work. I am listening to it in my brand new 2024 defender 110X and I absolutely love it.
It’s me again. I order a hard tip which is like a van. Our family is my wife and me plus the dog. So the dog sits in the jump seat. The cargo is much easier to loan plus vat benefits.
I'd keep it just for that colour! If it were an EV, then I'd keep it forever. Petrol Pups seem to like riding in it, so please ENJOY it for as long as all of you can!👍
👍
When the power starts going in the batteries I'm sure you would get rid off it,replacement batteries are ridiculously priced
Good plan 👍
I agree about your comment that it’s the perfect car for the UK’s crumbling roads. However, your London car park issue just highlights it’s not really suitable as an everyday car unless you have another (smaller) car for driving into the city. It’s also too compromised for the price (a faff to get in the back, tiny boot, wind noise, 26 mpg) and as others have pointed out, JLR have a terrible reliability reputation and poor dealer service (I know from experience). I can only justify owning one car so I’ll stick with my BMW 5 Series Touring.
Nice to see you driving between Goodwood and Kingsley Vale
Well spotted 👍
Hi, I just bought this car from Hendy Landrover 🎉
Ah no way. Loved that car. Enjoy 👌
@ Thanks for the reply I wasn’t sure you would have seen it on an older video. Love your stuff keep up the good work! I love it although the wife wasn’t keen on the green. So they wrapped it in an amazing grey.
😮
Only 70,000 used? Lovely car but it's only for a few at those prices and more new, all I'm saying is spare a thought for the majority of us when you talk of vehicles at that price. I'm privileged to drive a skoda scala sel 110 dsg, cost 19000 a 9 months old and averages over 50mpg, but I'm a dreamer.
I actually like the colour but the price totally killed it for me.
For me, I would desaturate the colour a bit and have it fitted with cream coloured steelies, roof bars for my ladders but no accessories. But is not a big deal, as shown would be close enough to perfect for me car
Can you get out of the back after a crash if the electric cutoff has activated, so you can’t move the seat with the motor 🤔
Sidesteps a must ?
For road use nice.
When offroading, and you're stuck in mud or sand, you can't reach with your shovel under the car.
Also it is difficult to get a jack under the car.
I would skip them. 😉
Good point!
Great review Pete. 110 all day long for our rural lifestyle.
👍
That colour is so good! Of course it's too tiny and expensive!
Fair enough!
Morning buddy. Will miss seeing this around. I think the Colour was top class. 👍🇬🇧
I have driven a D5 👍
Wonderful.
😂😂😂
So happy to see this video Sir Pete! My wife and I are looking at replacing are Ford Explorer with either a high trim Ford Expedition or waiting a couple years and buy a used long wheel base one of them defenders as the family transport and adventure rig. Aka my wife would drive it most lol. So hopefully prices here in the USA 🇺🇸 follow suit to the uk 🇬🇧 and drop a bit into a more affordable range for one! Great review and a awesome looking suv. My wife says if we get a defender 110 that your review will have a huge part in that decision
The perfect yuppie poser latte cruiser.
The market LR seek.
I love your work and thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Great review; I think the Grenadier looks better, though. However, not sure why the stop-start needs a prod on the accelerator to restart? My MB S212 restarts as soon as I release the brake pedal.
This one doesn’t 👎
You’ll have no bother buying a Grenadier. The dealers can’t shift the demonstrators. Last time I looked there were about 70 on Auto Trader. Not a good sign. 😬
@@hughmarcus1 There were 98 the last time I looked, mid December. Almost all with between delivery mileage and 3000 miles. This being not much more than six months after customer deliveries started in earnest.
@@hedydd2If I was them I’d be worried. At this early stage in their production, they need a waiting list, not a stack of unsold vehicles 😬
LOL.
What do we expect to see happening in the 10 to 15k segment? Good rime to buy or hang on??
Really nice motor Pete…
I would love to have seen it off road and seeing how it copes!
I have had one 1200 Meters up a Scottish hillside in the snow and it didn't slip a wheel once. No issues at all, it is more capable than most people will ever need.
Diesel IS cool, unlike EVs!
Thanks for sharing!
