Wow I am shocked with all this Mercedes talk. It just never happens at all especially from Derek ! Very cool guest. You should bring him back for some more cool stories.
Also the soviet steel wasn’t so much the thing, if I’m remembering this correctly, for instance Alfasud shells were left in primer in an entirely different place exposed to the elements before the time came to paint them and then a strike happened… even when the steel was as thin as it was, it got no chance for survival. I think up to a point the state of the Italian auto industry could’ve ended in as much tears as BL did
There was a story of the Soviets bartering for resources, so everyone has stories of companies using Soviet mystery steel way in excess to anything anyone can be bothered to check.
Great episode, guys! I laughed. A lot. I love it when you have additional encyclopedic guests. Hope you can brand Gynah soon, Jason. Come back, Matt. Enjoy the swap, DTS!
I've got DSLGATE on my Sportwagen TDI manual and N0D00RS on my custom e30 that doesn't have doors or a top. I was surprised a Jeep guy hadn't taken the N0D00RS ONE.
Hello! I'm the guy with the smoke silver 124 wagon from radwood, the lowered one. When I finished my engine swap, one of the first "pressure tests" for the car was a hard pull up Mt Tam! Would love to see a video of Dereks wagon going up that hill. I ended up adding an auxiliary radiator that lives in the wheel well from a Mk4 R32 so I could have the AC on and climb mountains at high RPM.
I hold you 2 responsible for the recent purchase of my R129. Also no thanks to you talking about Mercedes engine swaps. Now you have me looking for a KE Jetronic M119 for my C126 560! You are Killing me here!
Speaking of the 4 speed automatic in the first gen c-class... I had one of those with the 2L gasoline engine and 136 PS. No traction control, no stability control, and no light for ASD, only ABS but thanks to some budget tires on a wet road and the 4 speed auto, it really really scared me on one occasion. I was used to a W123 300D wagon even on snow before i got the 202, but on that particular occasion the 202 let the rear go like you mentioned the 201 with the ASD. On our traffic lights the green light blinks 4 times before it switches to orange and then red. This way you can estimate better if you are going to make it across or not. (yellow here already means yo only are allowed to cross if you can't safely stop) That time i mentioned, i wanted to turn left and it started to blink, so i put my foot on the throttle a bit to make the turn quickly, and mid turn the gearbox shifted down, the engine suddenly was above 4000 rpm and the rear wheels just left the chat. The back of the car was going towards what you call sidewalk in the US, and there were people standing, waiting for their lights to go green to cross the road. I was countersteering by reflex (thankfully fast enough), but then the counterswing happened and i saw a cyclist mid road with huge eyes looking at me, while i countersteered again, made it with room to spare. But the rest of the way i was going slow like a pensioner with glaucoma. It was so scary that i changed to propper premium tires again. And it was this day i noticed that "just press the clutch" like it worked in the manual W123 was not an option to stop a drift in an automatic car...
This is the most nerd you guys have been in years... Its all 2.46 this and 320 that 700cc blaaa. I still sat till the end lol Thanks for the content guys
Had a W114 280C and always dreamed of finding an old AMG M110 kit....talk about unobtanium. Ended up with a euro M110 CIS that I sold off with the car to fund another project :( Still miss that car and that I passed it on w/o finishing and didn't keep it.
I think an M104 (plus a manual transmission) would have transformed my '83 W123 300D from a car I liked to a car I loved. I just never felt any genuine affection for that 5-cylinder turbo-diesel. The rest of the car was pretty great, though. Ordinarily, I'm not much of an engine swap person. There is one potential swap, however, that has been haunting my daydreams for a few years now: I want to drop a souped-up Busso six in an FD RX-7. I'll explain. Like so many car nuts of a certain age, I still find the lines of the FD captivating. I think it's the prettiest car since the E-Type. I also like the philosophy behind it, the whole lightweight, well-balanced GT with double wishbone suspension thing. But I do not possess the requisite patience to live with a rotary engine. Interesting as they are, an engine that offers a combination of weedwhacker torque, big-block fuel consumption, and maintenance requirements that make old Ferraris start to look reasonable is a no from me. And while I like an LS just fine, it's not the engine I'd want to put in an FD. I mean, used C5s aren't that expensive, and that sounds like a much simpler route if you want something like that. I want something rev-happy in my bastardized FD anyway. Now, if I were to take the E-Type as inspiration, then an inline six would be an obvious choice. But the top two contenders from Japan, the Toyota JZ series and the Nissan RB series, are relatively heavy iron-block things. Besides, I don't want a turbo. What about an S54? Uh, I want something more reliable than a rotary, thank you. Anyway, the length of an inline six probably wouldn't play well with the FD's balance, as the chassis was designed around a short engine. So that means some kind of V6 (I know, I know). And the obvious choice would be a Toyota 2GR-FSE. And a great choice it would be. But ... But a car as beautiful as the FD deserves an engine that is beautiful as well, and the 2GR is an ugly, modern thing. But a 4-cam Busso? Gorgeous. It also makes the kind of noise that raises the hair on the back of one's neck. And properly sorted, they can make enough power to be fun. So, yeah, an FD RX-7 with a modified Busso. I think it'd be pretty sweet.
This is a fantastic idea, and fantastic you wrote out your entire reasoning behind such. An engine that actually seems to suit the car wrapped around it.
Engine swapping a classic Mercedes will always be a crime to me, but enjoyable podcast as always. Derek's gets a pass for how tasteful it is and being a direct drop in.
Why a crime? I worked at Mercedes in Knightsbridge/Chelsea in London. We did this in the late 90's, noughties for customers via the factory. Sending back older cars and the newer engine and gearbox. We did a W111 280 3.5 coupe with the newer V8 and 5 speed gearbox and it was painted the same as his wife's new CL500. It cost £368,000 in 2002. We did many refreshed w124s too and it all used factory parts.
Pffff. As if Fiat only sells cars domestically. Only because you Americans don't get them anymore doesn't mean they don't sell in all of Europe. I think there is a common misconception about Fiats being unreliable which killed their sales numbers overseas.
As always, Jason's attempt at a Michigan accent is amusing. At times Matt sounds more like he's from Ontario than Michigan. Eh. 😉 If I had to hazard a guess, I think he's from the Holland/Grand Haven region. The Dutch influence.
You guys (proper midwestern way to address a group) gotta drive through the Boston Edison neighborhood while in Detroit to see a smattering of Detroit’s glory days. Pop in the Guardian Building and the Fisher Building if you want to see what Detroit was up to at it’s absolute peak, back when it was known as Paris of the West.
Ahhh, Cammisa, ever clueless. Derek is always so patient as he pontificates his usual litany of errors and clangers! As was Matt Kwiek in this ep. Still the best podcast in the automotive world, but it's hard to grasp how Jason can get so much stuff so wrong!
This Mercedes Benz episode matches the number of the most amazing Mercedes concept ever, the C111. On the topic of Mercedes engine swaps, my 190E died on me a couple of days ago. After suddenly stopping it cranked, but refuesed to start. Turns out it was just a vaccum hose that popped out and it was a very quick fix, but before diagnosing it I was up all night thinking it was a CIS issue. That got me thinking about putting a new motor in instead of taking a bachelor’s degree in engineering in order to understand and repair the CIS. Where I live, it is legal to swap an engine with 40% more power than the original one as long as it retains the mounting points. Would an M111 or engine swap be feasable ? I agree with Jason, i prefer the M102 to the newer 4cyl Merc engines, but having EFI and an OBD2 port would also be nice.
Plus, there are other places in the Detroit metro area that aren't pronounced the way most would expect them to be. Lake Orion and Armada are examples of this. Then again there are many places in other states that also suffer from this phenomenon. Just ask Ohioans about Lima. Or Pennsylvanians about Lancaster. Nevadans about Genoa. Missourians about Nevada!!! 😂
After hearing how Jason apparently quietly goes off on dipshit drivers, doesn't anyone else think this would make for a great webseries? Just put a gopro in his car and a camera showing the drivers doing stupid shit. 2. Profit
Finally, some Mudgeoning
Every time you guys say "Hello and welcome" I think you really ought to see if John Davis would come on the podcast. I bet he would.
Wow I am shocked with all this Mercedes talk. It just never happens at all especially from Derek !
Very cool guest. You should bring him back for some more cool stories.
What's next? Derek talking about Porsche?
@@rsr789That, or maybe he'll finally start talking about old citroens 😂
yeah, that fuse idea of not running super grippy tires makes a lot of sense as I blow axle shafts out regularly.
Yesterday, downhill, rain, curve, approching a red light, at speed, stopped with room to spare. Thank you Michelin PS A/S 4. Thank you Cammisa.
Yea! We need Derek Clapton and Zack Clapman in the same podcast! Please 🙏 ❤
I gotta be that guy and mention how Jason’s Vangina is always carrying a bunch of guys around
I'm just happy for some after-work Carmudgeoning, have a comment to feed the algorithm. :D
A good summary of why I love this podcast: "Welcome...This is a friendly place. You're safe...It's not...and you're not".
Derek associating labor struggles with reduced quality instead of the conditions that led to the struggles lmao.

Jason, your van plates, "Are stuck here in Folsom Prison," were they are made.
The redemption of M112/113 is something I knew 7 years ago buying a 255.000 km unit😂
What a great show

My mind is melting.
2:27 "No I don't want to" spoken by Derek there with the same tone as a kid who's tired but don't want to be told to go to bed
Lost it so hard when Jason went into the Vangina monologues.
Great to see Matt again! And he’s all cleaned up too.
When did you see me not cleaned up?
At Jason’s shop the evening you fired up the new engine. I visited with my husband!

I really love this podcast/RUclips, but guys please Mercs again.
