For me, nothing beats British cases, especially old ones. Thanks for doing this again, UK cases are so underrated & there are still so many unsolved. I remember watching the show crimewatch (UK) from the 80s to 00's episodes. The cases & reconstructions were so eerie, like literally addictive af to watch, but sinister of course

I do love your stories, and eagerly wait for your postings, but what I am increasingly aware of is the absolutely OUTSTANDING production values of your episodes!! They roll forward, the information within the story is presented in a straightforward manner,, yet at the same time, written to be engaging.
The cutaways and transitions are seamless, and the dialog and delivery are, of course, flawless. And a doff of the skimmer to yourself, Paul! I can easily see you as the Retired Detective Inspector, and lifelong Law Enforcement, and can see a younger you in the uniform and helmet of the "Beat Cop", having worked up the ranks, then transitioning to Investigations. (all professional police role and titles are meant by me to be generic in nature, as I am sure the proper titles are quite different in Britain)
This is to say that your role as presenter is engaging, entertaining, and makes one confident that the story is coming from a man who knows what he is talking about. So BRAVO!
    Cheers!

Usually Mr. Brodie uses great graphics and photos, but the slo-mo shot of feet starting to scuffle at the approved school was kind of funny, since those types of shoes were yet to be invented; if he was born in 1948; the school years would have been completed by the mid-sixties, when running-style shoes with thick rubber soles were invented in around 1980. That must have been an unfortunate turning point, since it was a boarding school, when he had lived near St. John's, where he could be near his little sisters.

I've used the Old Bailey website during family tree research and often those on trial here weren't recorded as speaking in their defense ; If so, it was but a few words. Opening statements were reduced to facts of Law. Closing statements by attorney & elaborations on verdicts by judge were not recorded.
A more detailed / complete transcription was likely reported in newspapers? Paul got it right saying the Manning trial was longer than usual, it's the longest trial transcript I've seen throughout my research (however, my family & in-laws only got done for simple larceny, or pick-pocketing!!😅)

17:03 I’m having trouble making sense of the Constance Kent story. The investigation seemed to have turned into a cold case. If that was so and none of family members were in immediate threat of being arrested then why would she sacrifice herself? I could understand her confessing if her father or brother was about to be arrested or if they were falsely convicted and imprisoned and she wanted to save them at her own expense but that wasn’t the case. So there was no reason to confess. The only thing that makes sense is that she was guilty. It also explains the bloody nightgown, which at least suggests a female murderer. Why confess to a murder she didn’t commit?

Decades have passed, yet it still soothes my soul hearing that unique voice.
btw. Pa told me a tongue twister on how to get to Forfar from Fife, over the Firth of Forth. He only told it once, and unsure to this day if he made it up? Or it's something he was told? I've not been able to find it? (or remember that wonderful tongue twisting tale told!!)

In the first episode I find it very hard to believe the mother, Mary Ann, wasn’t a suspect. The father, Samuel Kent was a known adulterer, and the mother of Francis was apparently Mary Drewe Pratt, the nanny. If Mary Ann was mentally unstable she had both motive and opportunity to commit the murder.
It was in her habit to go and fetch Francis, which means Samuel probably didn’t even notice if Mary Ann had left the master bedroom.

It is possible that the nanny was with the old man in another part of the house 👀 , leaving ‘their’ baby unattended, thus giving the wife opportunity to get to the child 😢 she could have picked up the nightie on her way through the house to dispose of him 🤔

So why did Constance confess to the murder years later when she had no need to? The mother of the youngest child was not the nanny. And where is the evidence that the mother was mentally unstable?

    • @Legionmint7091
      @Legionmint7091 7 месяцев назад

@@janetpendlebury6808 I don’t know. I just find it very strange that the mother wasn’t a suspect. It’s odd that Constance confessed at all after so many years.

A real pleasure to listen to you paul. I nearly wept with joy and relief when you actually said 'brought' ... so many use the other, to such an extent i fear the dictionary may change with usage. Thanks for being such a pleasure, visually and orally.

Question! That gorgeous shot of those chalk cliffs. The Seven Sisters? Anyway I noticed there is beach down there when the tide is out. So there is a danger of getting stuck down there in water when the tide comes in?

The smaller children were NOTthe STEPchildren of the older children. They were HALF siblings of the older ones. Step means that two people are part of the same family but are NOT RELATED.

The way you told the story of Marie Manning and her husband and lover was delightful, as was the telling of the Brighton Trunk murders and "Pretty Feet". How unusual for murders to be re-visited years after investigations and the death of the accused parties.
