I too am a veteran, 76, and left with some mobility issues after a concussion a few years back. Spend a lot of time in bed looking for such interesting stories, when I can shuffle out to the bathroom, kitchen & back deck where I can still do some container gardening, celebrating tomatoes, cukes & green beans. It ain't much after an active life but it's what I got, so try to enjoy it, though chronic pain further impairs movement & a lot of discomfort. Always hoping for any level of improvement no matter how small or infrequent.

Joseph Merrick’s tragic tale never fails to make me feel such sorrow and empathy for the poor man. The way he was subjected to disgust and judgement is despicable. The person who stole his life savings and left him stranded, homeless and penniless in the lowlands of Europe was a heartless and cruel person.
I can’t believe his bones still haven’t been laid to rest. Hearing that his skeleton is still on display at the Royal London Hospital makes me so angry. Can they not just make a mould of his bones and give him a respectful burial?

Reminds me of the part in the Lynch film when the nurse, Mothershead, yells at Treves that he’s just making a spectacle of him again, no different to how he was treated as a sideshow performer. She was right. Part of me is grateful that he was able to spend his last days with some small ounce of dignity and comfort in the hospital, but Treves’ motivations were purely out of personal benefit, not out of true concern for Joseph or his safety. He wanted to be remembered as the doctor that found the elephant man, he knew he was incurable and that he would be treated as a specimen, not a man.

Mr. Merricks life story breaks my heart. Why are some people seemingly born to suffer like this? To think of him trying to earn a wage, to think of him never being held or caressed after he lost his mom, and later thinking of him just trying to figure out a way to sleep and breathe at the same time. I wish I could go back in time and have him as a friend, and to offer support as well.

When researching for your report, did you run across the description of the "bed" that was made for Mr. Merrick at the London? It was described as being a sofa-type article, contoured to fit his body, to better accommodate his need to sleep sitting up. It's a missing part of the story that would seem to disprove absolutely the "he tried to lie down to sleep like a normal person" theory about his final moments -- and lead more to the conclusion that his heavy head, the lumpy and painful soles of his feet, and the general and severe weakening of his body just culminated one day in an attempt to get out of "bed" where he lost his balance and toppled backwards.

Can't remember to put a load of wash in the dryer but ask me about cow hooves. Knock-down drag-out fight when I said dentists haven't used novocaine for decades. All this stupid trivia in my brain gets me yelled at. Then I google the proof. My body may be a crippled wreck but my brain is usually functioning. All I do is pay attention. Thank you for relating a rarely related feature of the workhouse system. It was overwhelmingly a cruel institution, but there was the occurance of doctors donating time and services to inmates such as Merrick for interventions such as the operation on his mouth. Because those who were were so destitute were forced into these institutions, they were then brought to the attention of such medical people, who could then treat them. where they otherwise might never have received care. A tiny good salvaged from a great evil.

Despite his beliefs, I’d like to think that today, Mr Merrick would agree that because of scientific development and his cultural infamy, being buried would be somewhat ironic and almost against the image of the role model he has become. How about burying a “big bag of books” to represent his unique head and the wealth of information and experience it once held? Just a thought. Great stuff Paul!

Joseph Merrick’s tragic life and terrible treatment in life and death, has never ceased to fill me with such sorrow. He was an intelligent man, a gentle man and I can’t help but wonder if he would have fared better were he alive today? Alas humans propensity for unimaginable cruelty is something we have never evolved to move past. I do love to see the letters he wrote, his elegant and refined penmanship with delicate flourishes shows a man of culture, whose words were as delicate and fragile as him. The unbearable cruelty inflicted upon him by his harpy step mother, and the inhumane treatment of those who sought only to profit off him only compounds my sadness for him. He did not fly into a violent rage, he did not return his treatment in kind; in the midst of such egregious treatment, he did not become the monster, that unmarked men so readily devolved into.
I’ve long been fascinated by Sideshows, not so much for their spectacle, but for the reactions of others to them. I cannot imagine how those of "cultured" backgrounds flocked to view this anomaly made man and the dregs of society cobbling together a few pence to see a man laid more low than they. Did it make them feel better? Did they understand that he was as human as any of them, with the same wants, needs and desires we all have? The least of which being the need for love and human connection
In life he was a spectacle to profit off of, and in even in death, he still served to line the pockets of unscrupulous men. I don’t know that the Doctors who cared for him remembered that he was a vibrant spirit residing in a misshapen form, or a misshapen form that happened to house a human spirit? I never agreed with his continued mistreatment after death. After all, he died just for want to sleep like a "normal" man. I’m not even sure continuing to parade him and display him ever served to really educate anyone. He only served to be a further spectacle. Joseph’s tired bones should have been afforded the dignity of a Christian burial. Rest and respite beneath the earth, where no one else could benefit from him further; but I know the reality is that he would have been defiled and sold off piecemeal for further benefit. So I am conflicted. Better his vessel be kept safe from greedy hands, even if it was at the cost of his dignity in death? I think I only agree with the decision due to the fact, he would never have had any semblance of peace were he left to the undertakers and a public burial.
He made many people a lot of money, but he himself was a pauper. He deserved so much more in life and he deserved the same dignity you’d wish for yourself or loved ones in death. When people ask who I would meet from any time period, alive or dead, I always say Joseph. I’d quite like to have been his friend, I wish I could have hugged him and told him that life wouldn’t always be this hard; even though it was not true. I’d have liked to write him a happy ending, with love and family and dignity.
They say there is always someone who has it worse than you, but that’s a lie. I don’t know that there is a modern day Joseph Merrick, and I believe he is the only one that had reason to complain, but he never really did. Any documentary I see never fails to leave me in bits over how devastatingly cruel life and people can be, and how cruelty actively seeks out those most undeserving of it.
Most of all though is my fervent prayers that if there is a good place waiting for us when our days come to an end, that he is there. Whole, happy and free of pain. Content in the knowledge that the world has not forgotten the man they once new only as 'The Elephant Man'; but he is instead remembered as Joseph Merrick, the man.
Now I have to track down a box of tissues as, I am once again reduced to bits by a man I never met, but will never forget. May you have eternal rest, Joseph, you more than earned it.
