I too am a veteran, 76, and left with some mobility issues after a concussion a few years back. Spend a lot of time in bed looking for such interesting stories, when I can shuffle out to the bathroom, kitchen & back deck where I can still do some container gardening, celebrating tomatoes, cukes & green beans. It ain't much after an active life but it's what I got, so try to enjoy it, though chronic pain further impairs movement & a lot of discomfort. Always hoping for any level of improvement no matter how small or infrequent.
: )
Hey, if you can celebrate vegetables, that's not nothing.
I can't even imagine what that means.
Same deal. Flat on back and bored stiff 😂 Eyes get too tired from watching videos and reading books. I’d be super happy to shuffle anywhere but I have high hopes this won’t be my life too long!
@@johnnottahcal5725I wish you well and a fast and complete recovery❤
I pray you begin to see a continual improvement, until then may you just know peace ❤
Thank you for serving 🌹 I hop you find comfort and relief from pain. 🙏
Joseph Merrick’s tragic tale never fails to make me feel such sorrow and empathy for the poor man. The way he was subjected to disgust and judgement is despicable. The person who stole his life savings and left him stranded, homeless and penniless in the lowlands of Europe was a heartless and cruel person.
I can’t believe his bones still haven’t been laid to rest. Hearing that his skeleton is still on display at the Royal London Hospital makes me so angry. Can they not just make a mould of his bones and give him a respectful burial?
Reminds me of the part in the Lynch film when the nurse, Mothershead, yells at Treves that he’s just making a spectacle of him again, no different to how he was treated as a sideshow performer. She was right. Part of me is grateful that he was able to spend his last days with some small ounce of dignity and comfort in the hospital, but Treves’ motivations were purely out of personal benefit, not out of true concern for Joseph or his safety. He wanted to be remembered as the doctor that found the elephant man, he knew he was incurable and that he would be treated as a specimen, not a man.
So true....
It's not like he knows
Was his name John not Joseph?? I'm unsure so would be happy if you can verify it for me. Thanks
@@davidwalker8319 That’s a name that is often wrongly attributed to him. It’s a pretty common misconception. His actual name was Joseph.
I can remember a line from a television drama, where a member of the peerage recollects, "I remember having a picnic on the grounds with nanny and a well dressed handsome couple on horseback stopped and inquired about how I was. I replied politely and afterwards learned they were my parents."
Nice they popped by during their morning ride.
Wasn't Jacob Rees-Mogg was it??! 🤣
What a astounding man Joseph merrick was I live 10 minutes away from where his mother is buried I often go to lay flowers on her grave not just from me but from her lovely son Joseph I wish the hospital would let him come home to Leicester and have a proper burial possible with his mum
❤❤❤
😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

Mr. Merricks life story breaks my heart. Why are some people seemingly born to suffer like this? To think of him trying to earn a wage, to think of him never being held or caressed after he lost his mom, and later thinking of him just trying to figure out a way to sleep and breathe at the same time. I wish I could go back in time and have him as a friend, and to offer support as well.
I'm having a sandwich 🥪
Joe just needed a hug, friends and 💕 love!!!
Not burying him and keeping both his skeleton and a replica feels......... egregious? nauseating? dreadful? Words fail to express.
As cruel as the cruelty he suffered in life.
Joseph Merrick... what a beautiful soul he has. my heart felt like it broke into a million oieces when i heard his story. all his views were so ahead of his time. what a remarkable man. i think the world would be much better if we all had just a smidgen of his character and personality.
Merrick possessed innate intelligence. Just imagine if he had been afforded the gift of education!
😢😢😢😢😢😢
❤❤❤
paused the video and immediately looked up his poetry after his part of the video ended and wow, he has some really pretty lines
Grateful comment
Amy Johnson's life and achievements are amazing, especially in that day and age. I think its awesome her story is still such an inspiration.
I agree. This video was the first I learned of her. Incredible!
I’ve loved the elephant man’s story since I was little. I did a report on him for my history class in middle school and my history teacher loved it, everyone else thought I was bizarre lol. I still can’t watch the David Lynch film about him without bawling at certain parts. He was such a pure soul.
When researching for your report, did you run across the description of the "bed" that was made for Mr. Merrick at the London? It was described as being a sofa-type article, contoured to fit his body, to better accommodate his need to sleep sitting up. It's a missing part of the story that would seem to disprove absolutely the "he tried to lie down to sleep like a normal person" theory about his final moments -- and lead more to the conclusion that his heavy head, the lumpy and painful soles of his feet, and the general and severe weakening of his body just culminated one day in an attempt to get out of "bed" where he lost his balance and toppled backwards.
I think a lot of people can relate (on a much smaller scale) to the feeling of being ostracized because of how we are perceived by those who don't have a clue who or what we are.
Love of history
The man has style
The cadence refined
The presentation done well

Whomever is editing and producing this behind the scenes, Fabulous production quality.
The host ... I could not imagine another person delivering the way you do .
A+ all around
Thank you
A big thank you from myself and editor Kev 😁😊🙏
Ditto
Listen you are like literary Cocaine, highly addictive and time consuming.
Cannot express how good your delivery is,not to mention the topics which are usually obscure and always profound.
The Oxford riots eye opening, Spencer Percival the same, the boxer and women boxers I'm doing further research as it was mind-blowing!
Your one of the best thank you all!
Why not “whoever”?
I love the presentation of the videos. This has to be one of the best on RUclips.
The story of the elephant man is both sad and happy. It points out the dark side of man but also shows how good always prevails over evil as it must. God bless those doctors, nurses ,hospital staff, actors ,royalty and everyone that came together to treat that man as the human being he was.
Good always prevailed over evil? U must be mad and have fail history 1a
@@richardsanjose3692 you would have to elaborate because I don't understand why I would have FAILED history saying what I said. I never said evil things haven't happened.
Never you mind that naysayer. Your original comment was just fine.

Joseph Merrick not only had to endure horrible lifelong cruelty, loneliness & estrangement from most society, it must have been so physically painful just to sleep sitting up, moving or simply getting a good breath.
a true hero who deserves to rest in peace.
I absolutely LOVE this show. I majored in Humanities and Art History in college. A lot of these stories are new to me. The details, the visual and especially the delivery are all awesome.
Poor, poor man. Kindness shouldn’t depend on perfection of body, visage or speech. We’re all human beings. Kindness is everything.
It shouldn’t, it sometimes does
I always enjoy the storyline. Well written with a dash of humor. But the delivery is THE BEST. The demeanor, well-timed pauses and elocution is indeed Top Shelf. Adding the bloopers pushed it over the top. I anticipate this channel will soon hit amazing #s.
If you like the blooper here then you need to watch the one on Dr Crippen - no spoilers.
What humor?
I literally just found this channel 15 mins ago and the first story was enough to makw me subscribe immediately after the first flying lesson Ms Johnson took.
I have to say, I enjoy the format and am looking forward to watching and listening to much more.
My favourite part right now is the slight Scottish lilt and gentle roll of the 'R' that comes through to brighten my Celtic (Irish) heart.
I am always pleased when I find channels like this from our neck of the woods (Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England) with high production value and story telling that is done right ✅️
😮OMG!!!! I just found this and before I got too much into the first story I subscribed!!!! 😍 So amazing. I so look forward to many more episodes, as well as going backwards to"Binge Watch" any I have missed.😊 🙋🤗🙏😇
I'm glad to hear that Joseph Merrick was able to have something of a happy ending. Listening to how much he enjoyed his trip to the theater made me tear up a little. I wish he could have been born in a different time where he would have recieved better treatment, both medically and socially
Top notch narration and video to support the story. My TBI (veteran) means I slow the Video down to .75 in the youtube player. Helps me fully appreciate the stories and the video lasts longer. Your story telling skills are up there with Orson Welles. Looking forward to each presentation.
TBI here as well. My best to you.

These kind of stories are so good for my brain. They are calm enough that I don't get stressed, I learn something and the soothing voice calms me.

I love 'Well I Never', wonderfully entertaining stories delivered in a an educational, informative and precise manner, although the occasional corpsing is priceless.
As much as I enjoy the polished presentation of the wide variety of subjects, and stories told so very well, I extra enjoy it when you can't contain yourself. Watching you choking over the 'muscular Christianity' movement I guffawed so loudly I woke up my mostly deaf dog. Particularly interested in the women's boxing stories. I must share this episode with a young friend who is just getting into boxing herself. Maybe her Mum will calm down if she knows her girl is following a long tradition? No, maybe not.
Thank you for a cracking compilation.
Luck and cheers to your young friend!
@@NinjaGrrrl7734 Thank you! Good weather and favourable winds to you too!

I would have wanted to meet Amy Johnson. Who was an extremely talented woman.
I would love to see you do a Calhoun County Alabama trio...Viola Hyatt, Audrey Marie Hilley and Nanny Doss. Three violent, murderous women, all from the same very small country town!
I had only discovered the Viola Hyatt case yesterday. Spooky! I think we can certainly put an episode together about this terrible trio!
@@WellINever I can get you a pic of where they found Hilley dead..it's just down the road!
Please do. I know the county. Good hunting there
Didn't realize there were women as beautiful as you out here in Alabama
I just love the one about Henry Paget, what a story. Thank you and have a great day!
They were quite the character!

Amy J, trailblazer extraordinaire and an undeniable National Hero. 💖
So nice to hear about Amy another Aviatrix living dangerously. No pun intended but the fame of Amelia Airhart (sp?) has been done to death. Thank you for your very precise history lessons with your excellent voice. I look forward to each new one.😊
I'd never heard of Amy. Glad to know her accomplishments.
Look up Bessie Coleman, the first American woman of color to earn a pilot's license.
Earhart wasn’t actually that skilled of a pilot. She was just famous. She wasn’t even familiar with the correct use of the radio and chose a radio operator who wasn’t great either. It’s what got her killed
Yes indeed! I wear a shirt with her image on it, flight hat on head and looking dignified and determined.
Just doing what she wanted to do; not asking for permission to set her own wings!!
Bessie Coleman!!
I love this channel! You have a rare talent for storytelling (& are hilarious, I love the snarky/fun intonations & expressions, & don't get me started on the bloopers xD). Usually compilation videos would start to drag around the mid-point, & I'd get distracted... but that never happened with yours. I was actually shocked it had been as long as it had, the mark of getting & easily keeping my full attention. I know this channel will keep growing.
I knew of some of the story of Joseph Merrick, but nothing like you shared with us! Thank you for such a respectful, kind and honest telling of this man's life ❤️.
Amazing work credited to you and your folks behind the scenes. I'm somewhat new to the party and have enjoyed your videos and look forward to seeing more A sincere thanks!💖👏
Welcome aboard! 😀🙏
The story of John Merrick never fails to bring a tear to my eyes 😢
I love the story of the women boxers. I practice karate and recently got into MMA. It's wonderful to hear stories of badass women blazing the trail for modern women like myself 🤘🏻
Sweet Joseph Merrick, He is in the presence of the Lord now, happy beyond all that happened to him when alive. Bless his wonderful soul.
Yes, he is resting in peace. I think it's extremely unlikely that God exists but with all the violence, pain and suffering that religion causes, it's nice to see that sometimes it does make peoples life's more bearable.
Peace.
while we remember the trials and tribulations of john merrick with empathy and sympathy, which he rightly deserves, let us not forget the wonderful dr. treves who made the last years of his life worth living.
Dr Reeves will have jewels in his crown for his kindness to Merrick
Joseph is his Christian name, it’s John in the film.
Harry Haft was also interviewed as a survivor by the USC shoah foundation, founded by Stephen Spielberg in 1994 and totaling 55.000 interviews with WW2 survivors, etc.
I feel so terrible that I'm insecure about a little bit of acne on my face, when Joseph suffered so much, yet was so brave, living in a such a cruel society. He puts me to shame.
I have always felt so sorry for Joseph he must have been so scared. Then with everybody looking at him. I hope he found some happiness and peace in his life.
Amy Johnson gained a degree in economics, and then worked as a secretary to a solicitor. Says it all, really, doesn't it!
It's maddening to think how many women could have changed the world if only they hadn't been sidelined throughout history by men with fragile egos
@@ababble1245I strongly agree!
@@ababble1245she literally lost to her ego. Women's egos make us focus how to finesse... and instead become hypocrites or forever victims. A certain group of women are known to cry woe women the most but crap on other women when they get just a chance to play with the big boys or even when favored... *mhmm* But thats most humans tbh. Their egos making them ultimate pick me's of the world but by default admittedly. Soon as a people(or person) gets ahead they become or show they are like their oppressor or bully or whatever. Not coming at you personally Ijs its hard to care until most women genuinely and not just conveniently care about and stop being hypocrites towards one another and even the men we condemn yet mimic. Now would be a great time but we're still failing because of our egos.
That thought struck me too when I heard that 🙄
And 100 years before that she would have had little education and if she were lucky found a position as a maid.
Well I never had 2 hours go by so quickly!!! Thanks for the great videos that are always interesting and entertaining.
In the 1950s l lived in Detroit, Michigan. There was an Italian family in the neighborhood with 3 sons who all suffered from neurofibromatosis aka Elephant Man Disease. So sad.😔
What neighborhood? My family also lived in Detroit at that time, and I'm curious if my dad would have known them.
It’s bizarre it’s called that since the elephant man didn’t have that. He had two forms of Proteus syndrome. NF1 is actually pretty common, but proteus is extremely rare.
I am from Detroit as well, hello.
@@fudge1770able: My Dad’s family was Rosedale Park, my Mom’s was Rouge Park.
I just moved from Reford, MI back to Shelby Twp. I used to go to Rosedale Park to visit a friend all the time. Had to drive thru Brightmore by way of Fenkel thru the Red light district to get to him. Brightmore used to be a warzone.
I truly enjoy your stories! I loved that you did not edit out that you got tickled and laughed. Americans love bloopers! Thanks bunches!
A historical “Well I Never” compilation, proving that dreams DO come true.
Amy Johnson truly was a daring Woman. I like the Statues.
I enjoy these a lot while I knit. The added bloopers were so fun and unexpected ❤ thank you very much
Thank you for putting together these interesting stories. Its a refreshing break from true crime stories,as much as we all enjoy them.

Thank you, Magpie! More brand new episodes coming next week 😁
It's a wonderful thing when you learn something new. Thank you Paul
My sisters get mad because I can answer all the kid's questions with real info. I'm a curious person and tend to remember useless trivia like a computer. Can't remember to put a load of wash in the dryer but ask me about cow hooves. Knock-down drag-out fight when I said dentists haven't used novocaine for decades. All this stupid trivia in my brain gets me yelled at. Then I google the proof. My body may be a crippled wreck but my brain is usually functioning. All I do is pay attention. The learning just happens. Quality of the lesson does matter. Some channels I ignore. Some are always worthy of my attention. This is one of the latter. Thank you!
I’m like this ,so is my mum ❤ but this wins many a quiz night ❤
Praise be to God for giving Joseph Merrick some peace, happiness, friends, and respect in his final years. That poem really tears at the heart eh?
Such an intriguing video, thank you for covering these stories - always appreciate the effort put into your videos!
That wasn't you hugging Amy? 😂😂😂
Sure it wasn't your grandfather or an uncle? 😉
I LOVE THE BLOOPERS! When something is so damn silly Paul just has to laugh!
😂😂luv it
Thank you for relating a rarely related feature of the workhouse system. It was overwhelmingly a cruel institution, but there was the occurance of doctors donating time and services to inmates such as Merrick for interventions such as the operation on his mouth. Because those who were were so destitute were forced into these institutions, they were then brought to the attention of such medical people, who could then treat them. where they otherwise might never have received care. A tiny good salvaged from a great evil.
I love the women's boxing portion. Shows how important it is to preserve these spaces and sports for women.
what are we preserving them from, in your opinion? i always wanna know how can i do better to support women’s spaces is one reason why i ask.
Hahaha you can support them by letting mediocre dudes claim to be women and then smash the competition funny how men don't need protection but women are equal 😂
The power you put into these stories is a true gift.
Im so happy i have found this channel 😊 Great story telling & photos etc. Very random and cool stories, i love it! 😎 My fave from this was learning about Joseph Merrick. Thank you, Nga mihi, from Aotearoa NZ ❤😁

Hello there and a good morning friend. Another great video of the past ! Just love all your videos, very interesting and beautifully done. Thank you 🙏
What an emotional rollercoaster!! I am so glad that you had a laugh when explaining ‘manly exercises’ as I was feeling quite traumatised by the Harry Haft story. The research and detail you share with us is amazing. Thank you. 😊
Despite his beliefs, I’d like to think that today, Mr Merrick would agree that because of scientific development and his cultural infamy, being buried would be somewhat ironic and almost against the image of the role model he has become. How about burying a “big bag of books” to represent his unique head and the wealth of information and experience it once held? Just a thought. Great stuff Paul!
I think he would have wanted some fucking peace. He never got that for a single moment in life, nor in death.
@@Tsumami__ “some peace” would have sufficed, this is a family friendly, educational channel after all.
Paul Brodie often keeps me company late at night or very early in the morning… on RUclips of course. Cheers, From Buffalo NY 🦬
Of course… @1:39:11 there’s mention of my hometown, Buffalo NY what a nice surprise! Thank you for the honorable mention 😂
I learned of Amy Johnson long ago via the song Flying Sorcery off of Al Stewart's Year of the Cat album. Glad to learn more about her.
Enjoy everyone of your presentations. You are one of the best narrators, if not the best, on RUclips.. thank you so much and wish there was more from you.
Poor Amy….crappy way to die. She deserved better. (The bronze statue of her was just fantastic)!
I absolutely love listening to you talk, you’re very engaging. Brilliant, simply brilliant.❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for telling us about Amy Johnson! I had no idea about her and I love hearing about women that did such things back then. Makes me so mad to hear she was told she could never be an aviator. Why? Why would people think women can't do certain things? So frustrating. I'm glad she didn't listen but why do we always have to prove ourselves. Good for her! Thanks for her story!
Just found this channel and so glad I did as I didn’t know how much I was missing. Great writing and presentation!

Two hours of top-notch stories! I fully enjoy every second of it! Thanks for such a great content!
Joesph had two different types of Proteus syndrome, which is far more rare than neurofibromatosis. That’s why his physical deformities were so severe and it will be a long time before there’s another case similar to his.
Absolutely love your content, I could listen to you for days. BTW loved the bloopers. ✌️
These compilations are so informative to watch as well as listen to how you describe them. I did find it a little amusing when you had difficulty with "Women's Boxing" though it was refreshing to hear your laughter. Thank you so much for continuing the content presented thus far 🙂

Joseph Merrick’s tragic life and terrible treatment in life and death, has never ceased to fill me with such sorrow. He was an intelligent man, a gentle man and I can’t help but wonder if he would have fared better were he alive today? Alas humans propensity for unimaginable cruelty is something we have never evolved to move past. I do love to see the letters he wrote, his elegant and refined penmanship with delicate flourishes shows a man of culture, whose words were as delicate and fragile as him. The unbearable cruelty inflicted upon him by his harpy step mother, and the inhumane treatment of those who sought only to profit off him only compounds my sadness for him. He did not fly into a violent rage, he did not return his treatment in kind; in the midst of such egregious treatment, he did not become the monster, that unmarked men so readily devolved into.
I’ve long been fascinated by Sideshows, not so much for their spectacle, but for the reactions of others to them. I cannot imagine how those of "cultured" backgrounds flocked to view this anomaly made man and the dregs of society cobbling together a few pence to see a man laid more low than they. Did it make them feel better? Did they understand that he was as human as any of them, with the same wants, needs and desires we all have? The least of which being the need for love and human connection
In life he was a spectacle to profit off of, and in even in death, he still served to line the pockets of unscrupulous men. I don’t know that the Doctors who cared for him remembered that he was a vibrant spirit residing in a misshapen form, or a misshapen form that happened to house a human spirit? I never agreed with his continued mistreatment after death. After all, he died just for want to sleep like a "normal" man. I’m not even sure continuing to parade him and display him ever served to really educate anyone. He only served to be a further spectacle. Joseph’s tired bones should have been afforded the dignity of a Christian burial. Rest and respite beneath the earth, where no one else could benefit from him further; but I know the reality is that he would have been defiled and sold off piecemeal for further benefit. So I am conflicted. Better his vessel be kept safe from greedy hands, even if it was at the cost of his dignity in death? I think I only agree with the decision due to the fact, he would never have had any semblance of peace were he left to the undertakers and a public burial.
He made many people a lot of money, but he himself was a pauper. He deserved so much more in life and he deserved the same dignity you’d wish for yourself or loved ones in death. When people ask who I would meet from any time period, alive or dead, I always say Joseph. I’d quite like to have been his friend, I wish I could have hugged him and told him that life wouldn’t always be this hard; even though it was not true. I’d have liked to write him a happy ending, with love and family and dignity.
They say there is always someone who has it worse than you, but that’s a lie. I don’t know that there is a modern day Joseph Merrick, and I believe he is the only one that had reason to complain, but he never really did. Any documentary I see never fails to leave me in bits over how devastatingly cruel life and people can be, and how cruelty actively seeks out those most undeserving of it.
Most of all though is my fervent prayers that if there is a good place waiting for us when our days come to an end, that he is there. Whole, happy and free of pain. Content in the knowledge that the world has not forgotten the man they once new only as 'The Elephant Man'; but he is instead remembered as Joseph Merrick, the man.
Now I have to track down a box of tissues as, I am once again reduced to bits by a man I never met, but will never forget. May you have eternal rest, Joseph, you more than earned it.
You are such a dapper dresser,I enjoy listening to you so much thank you for your time ❤
