I've watched this maybe 100 times. .. It is offensive how great Vai is. People - we have a literal Mozart/Beetoven among us. Whenever I visit other channels and hear from the best youtube has to offer, I always come back to Vai and it is STUNNING how far advanced Steve is compared to anyone who thinks they will have a legacy in 40 years. How lucky are we? Jack Butler 'dun loves us.
People hear the word 'virtuoso' and get scared. I've seen countless comments out Vai saying how he plays without feeling at a million miles a hour when modest and amazing songs like this are thoughout his catalogue.
I listen to this song and others from him and to me he takes guitar playing to levels of almost spiritual interaction. Music that I've heard him play for decades still gives me shivers and raises the hair on my arms. No other single guitar player does that for me. Every song he does is a story but it's also like a 5 minute dream.
I've just read your comments about the great Mr vai..I total agree with you.. I know he's playing notes like other guitarist.but his notes just really do something for me. I can't explain. I JUST FEEL IT...
+geoffrey welsby well I can explain it to you,...he takes his time with every note and really adds a lot of love to his playing,....he doesn't just breeze through the notes he treats every one as if it's important,..even the fast stuff .....
Oh yeah Sam, i feel u. But i found 2 other gods who can give you the dream sound that your ears are craving. Mattrach is a pure genius and he always find the good notes. Even his composition he did when he was 17 and was playing all the instruments are fucking masterpieces, you really need to check him out. And of course, some of Satriani’s slow songs i listen every week, especially Love Thing. I don’t know why but that song drives me nuts
My dad said something to me which makes sense now, "A true musician will make the instrument talk" And it is from listening to guys like Steve Vai that make this ring true xD A true artist in every sense of the word, and its also why he is such an awesome dude.
For me this is peak Vai. A lot of his work gets just plain too weird for my tastes, but the whole Alien Love Secrets album is the pinnacle of accessible song structures, memorable riffs, and sophisticated melodies.
Are you two commenters musicically educated? Not a bash...no better than thou stuff.. but just saying, yes, he gets "weirder" but western music is used to 4/4 and major or minor key. He loves..Lydian. and on his albums after this, he experiments with all the modes, time signatures, etc..which sounds weird to people who just listen to western music. But...if you play it, learn it or teach it, you understand he's just showcasing that he's knowledgeable in all modes and time signatures. Again..this wasn't a bash response, just my observation as a huge Vai fan, and, as a music teacher! Be blessed, and much love! 🙏🏻
@@pdp7653 that's a great question, my friend! You're right that often the reason people don't like "weird" music - whether that's jazz or prog rock or Nine Inch Nails - is because they haven't been exposed to that level of vocabulary. But for me, it's just a matter of taste. Doesn't bother me if a song wants to change keys or modes or time signatures or even genres. Can you think of any songs that you dislike not because they're too sophisticated but because they just strike you as too "weird" (whatever that word would signify to you)?
Rather ironic everyone here saying this is one of vais more simple songs. however he mentiond during the string theories tour back in 07 this was one of the harder songs for him to nail everytime and dig deep to get his desired effect across. Not trying to get anyone worked up just quoting what he had said specifically about this song.
@@robbyb6380 just speaking as a musician and a composer myself - perhaps you're one too - oftentimes the simplest pieces are the most elegant, and in the most elegant pieces the challenge is not the technical complexity, but rather the EMOTIONAL complexity, and the mountain the performer has to climb is just what you're describing Steve Vai as saying. He doesn't have a problem playing all the notes. The challenge is playing them in a way that communicates all the feelings he wants the listener to experience. That was true for another Vai song called "Hand on Heart" from the album Firegarden. His goal was to play the song with a level of tenderness as if his fingertips were bleeding, and that meant playing at a level that transcended merely playing the song correctly.
The guitar is a natural extension of Vai's body and spirit. It brings me joy to see a person not only find his true purpose, but to lean into it so such a degree that he becomes legend.
I think that all the guitarists love their guitars as intimately part of them because their guitars are the secrets of their souls playing, especially in the play of Steve Vai who expresses so much with the sounds of his guitars. I think that all musicians have a very intimate link with his instrument(s).

Love it! Also adore Steve's "touching tongues". This guy has so much passion it's infectious. How he's able to transfer those emotions to the guitar? Extraordinary!!!
That could maybe express the "death", (in a second degree) this moment when there's nothing more, before refinding the life much more worthful and the intensity of the melody which goes again.
